1.0 Tensile Folly

14/09/15 - 02/10/15 1.1 Brief

In collaboration with Nick Westby of Westby and Jones and Mike Hutchison of Momentum Engineering, you will be lead participants in the construction of a full scale pavilion on the lawn at the heart of UCA’s Canterbury campus. As part of an extended workshop you will competitively prepare design proposals for the assembly of a series of geometric building blocks into a novel structure. These will be reviewed and critiqued and a final proposal selected.

1.2 Requirements

We will begin to prepare primary pavilion pieces on Monday 14th September, and continue during the following two weeks. You will form six small teams and with the assistance of UCA technicians will complete a mass fabrication of 240 basic structural elements. Subsequently you will work with other members of the architecture department and the wider university to construct one selected proposal for a modular combination of the elements into an overall form by the workshop finale. Be prepared for messy intensive working practices, including extended gloss painting. Dress appropriately; no ball gowns or similar precious outfits!!

1.3 Outcomes

Preparation of the modular parts will provide you with an immediate introduction to CSA’s making culture and act as a context for your ongoing advanced inductions into the facilities available to you in the year ahead. 1.4 Assessment

Completion of the Folly project will contribute 50% of the grade for the MA Interior Design ‘Studio Practice, Theory and Analysis’ unit (CIND 7008) and the MA Architecture ‘Context and Method’ unit (CARC 7001). Both units are valued at 30 credits. Students will be continually assessed and monitored throughout with respect to: - individual attendance, - individual effort and contribution - team and group collaboration - design ambitions - presentation ability Feedback will be verbal only for this project.
