2.0 Soane’s Cabins
21/09/15 - 09/11/15 2.1 Brief
The trustees of the John Soane Museum have decided to hold a three day party to celebrate the 190th anniversary of the arrival of the sarcophagus. The party will start on 23rd March 2016. Numerous luminaries from contemporary arts, politics and media culture have been invited. You have been commissioned to design a spatial intervention that will accommodate two of these individuals at a specific location within the building.
2.2 Requirements
Your design must be carefully tuned to what is available at your location and should be tailored to your specific occupant to provide them with everything that they will require during the duration of the party. It must provide a degree of privacy and enclosure but should allow ready access or egress as well. A secondary section of the proposal must also be refined into a portable device that can be deployed to multiple locations elsewhere in the museum. Here it should be able to perform a useful function for a larger group.
2.3 Outcomes
The ability to demonstrate specific research skills and interests, to record site observations and translate these to meaningful design constraints, criteria and opportunities The ability to rapidly develop iterative proposals in response to a contextual brief and resolve them with detailed drawing and representational techniques into a complex material and spatial proposal. The development of physical collage and model making skills alongside knowledge of layout, presentation and review methods. It is highly recommended that you intensively research each of these prior to visiting site. Following our initial ideas and research review you may be permitted to swap ‘guests’, ‘sites’ or ‘material’ with one other provided both parties involved in any swap agree to exchange all research on their individuals. Permission and reasons for swapping must be agreed in writing with your studio tutor. The guest list: A. Nigella Lawson, Presenter B. Jeremy Corbyn, MP C. Hilary Mantel, Author D. 2.6 Assessment
Completion of the Soane Cabins project will contribute 30% towards the grade for the BA Interior Architecture and Design Stage 3 ‘Projects 05’ unit (CIAD 6011). Assessment will be carried out at the point of final portfolio submission on 05/04/2016. Feedback will be verbal and written at formative stages and written at the summative stage for this project.
2.7 Duration
The project will run from the 21/09/2015 until the final crit on 09/11/2015.
2.8 Key Events
Research (Wks 01-02): You will each be given one specific character, one specific location within the Soane Museum and one specific material, selected at random. It is up to you to individually research these and compile a comprehensive knowledge of them. Research deliverables must be presented at the Interim crit. Site Visit (Wk 01): Our visit to the Soane is booked for 2pm on Thursday 24 September. You will be allowed around in groups of five. You should explore the entire space and before focussing on gathering site data at your designated location. Site visit deliverables (see below) are also due for the Interim crit. Initial Designs (Wks 02-03): Alongside the research and preparatory site work you should develop initial sketch proposals and ideas for review at the Interim crit. These should investigate the needs and requirements of your subject, the design possibilities and constraints of your locations or materials and also the functions of your intervention and device. Detailed Designs (Wks 03-07): Your detailed proposals should be carefully drawn in cad plan, section & elevation. All deliverables must be complete for the Final Crit. 2.10 Staff/Guests
The project will be run by Sam McElhinney (MA Course Leader) and assisted by David Di Duca, visiting design tutor. Technical support will be provided by Chris Settle and Ben Westacott when required. During the course of the unit we will be joined by key guests for crit reviews. In order to stimulate debate and discussion reviews will be help in tandem with the BA Interior Architecture and Design Stage 3 reviews. 2.12 Lear ning Aims
The aims of this unit are: A1: To refine the research, critical thinking, and decision making skills needed in the development of design processes and coherent concepts, which can inform design proposals in response to self-initiated briefs. A2: To develop the ability to design creative, appropriate and complex interior architecture and design projects, resolving construction and detail by synthesising knowledge and understanding gained across the three years of the course. A3: To enhance employability skills by developing confidence in communicating and presenting design proposals effectively and professionally using a range of techniques targeted to particular audiences.
2.13 Lear ning Outcomes
On satisfactory completion of this unit you will be able to: LO1: Formulate clear self-initiated design agendas, briefs and propositions underpinned by systematic investigation, analysis and critical evaluation of broad and unpredictable contexts. LO2: Creatively generate and rigorously develop appropriate complex interior architecture and design proposals that respond to coherent concepts, and satisfy spatial; programmatic; aesthetic; technical; environmental; and relevant regulatory requirements as well as user/s needs. LO3: Resolve design proposals in detail in all their relevant structural; technical; material; and environmental aspects and in a range of different scales. LO4: Produce a comprehensive set of evidence that effectively communicate design processes and proposals using a range of techniques and applying conventions appropriate to the intended project aims and audience/s.
