2014/15. Final year students started the year creating fifty provocative projects for fifty sites distributed between Canary Wharf and The First Phase of Social Housing in the Olympic Park in STATE-LESS. We visited Home on High, by Lucy Harrison, at the Balfron Tower and pondered all things social-housingneglect related. Meanwhile Stage 2 students created 3 follies for 3 autonomous landscapes before engaging The Venice Biennale, and the sparkling lagoons of Folkestone and Dover. Stage 1 ventured into Canterburys infra-ordinary with their curious devices and experimented with collage at the Cathedral. In the Spring Stage 1 re-thought Paris and embraced Margate, whilst Stage 2 stocked Walter’s Warehouse. Final year students returned to Hamburg where a vast new flood wall has partitioned the city from the river and the population has voted to re-nationalise their power providers. Protesters severed links to a new coal fired power station. And it snowed.

The Ghost Orchid Archive Garden Structural Terrarium Orchid Analysis The Ghost Orchid

“The Ghost Orchid: Britain’s rarest plant”

Ghost Orchids are among the rarest plants in Britain. They have been found in about 11 sites in the Chilterns and West Midlands in England, but such is their rarity and the secrecy surrounding them that it is difficult to be sure exactly how many sites there are.

Regarded as extinct

Ghost Orchids were first discovered in Britain in 1854 but were only seen 11 times before the 1950s. They were seen regularly in a few Chilterns sites between 1953 and 1987 but then disappeared and were regarded as extinct until one plant was discovered in 2009. In most sites they have only been seen once, and rarely for more than ten years in any one site.

ARCHIVAL WEBS/ PERSPECTIVE// VIEWS

Ghost Orchids get their name from their creamy-white to pinkish-brown colour and their fleeting occurrences in dark, shaded woods. The colour results from the absence of chlorophyll, as they are parasites of fungi associated with tree roots, and they do not need to photosynthesise their own food. They spend most of their lives as rhizomes (underground shoots) in the soil or leaf litter of woodlands, and flowering shoots only occasionally appear above ground. Even then, their small size (usually less than 15cm, rarely up to 23cm) and unpredictable appearance between June and October means that Ghost Orchids are rarely seen.

THE JOURNEY OF A COFFEE BEAN

44

Step 1 Arrival

Step 2 Tucked Away

Step 3 The Roast

42 4

The green coffee first arrives into Hamburg at the Port of Hamburg. It then is transported by boat to the delivery dock. The green coffee is stored in burlap sacks that are stacked on top of eachother.

After temporaray time in the storage house, the green coffee is lifted by the pulley system into the “Glass box which is where the coffee roastery is located. The coffee roastery is the heart of the building and is the basis for the architecture and th processes which happen within the building.

The green coffee is lifted from the boat with a pulley system leading to the green coffee storage house. The green coffee is stacked on top of one another on pallets. The warehouse is dark with little to no liught to ensure the green coffee flavour is preserved.

After temporaray time in the storage house, the green coffee is lifted by the pulley system into the “Glass box” which is where the coffee roastery is located. The coffee roastery is the heart of the building and is the basis for the architecture and the processes which happen within the building.

Step 4 Altenative Routes

Step 5 Coffee Bar

Once the coffee has been roasted it is distributed to different parts of the building to be used for different processes. The roasted coffee bean is either taken to be grinded to be taken to the espresso bar or the various coffee pavillions or it is taken for oil to be extracted from it to create organic coffee cosmetics. The ocffee is transported throughout the building in trolleys that move along the private section of the building.

The grinded ocffee is taken to the espresso bar to be served to the people of Hamburg. The long coffee bar is intended to encourage interaction and communal gathering between the people of HafenCity and old Hamburg. The walls of the coffee bar can open up to encourage interaction with the outdoor pavillions.
