THE BOYS ARE BACK IN TOWN Also weighing in was Jim Leyland, the Tigers’ longtime manager, who called the return of Parrish to Toledo “terrific.” “I think the world of Larry Parrish,” he said. “I think he’s an outstanding baseball man. He’s a great evaluator and a great guy. I really enjoy being around him.” Parrish returns the compliment, saying, “Leyland has been in baseball a long time, and he’s a brother to me still.” When we rang Parrish up at his home in southwest Georgia a few days before the start of spring training in Lakeland, Fla., it wasn’t him who answered the phone. It was a recording of country star Alan Jackson singing one of his hit songs before Parrish, a country boy at heart, came on the line. In the course of conversation, he talked about the upcoming season, as well as one of his loves outside of baseball – hunting with his Georgia pals. And he discussed how important he finds coaching young players to become better. “The teaching part is what I enjoy most,” he said. “In all professional sports, the best way to be a good manager is to have good players. Lots of times, the average guy might not see it, but if you’re bringing in a player and he does his job, he makes you look good.”
One player on the roster this season is Mike Hessman, wellknown to Mud Hens fans as the team’s all-time home run leader – 140 over four seasons here. The 36-year-old Hessman is a favorite of Parrish, who praises him as “a baseball guy start to finish.” “He’s a good kid, and a hard-working player,” says Parrish. “At his age, he’s thinking of the second half of his career, so we’ll have talks about him coaching. Meanwhile, he’ll be a go-between with me and the clubhouse, and while he’s here he can lead by example.” Hessman says Parrish has been a huge part of his career. “There were years when I wasn’t playing very well and LP continued to have confidence in me. He really cares about his players. He’s been a real friend, and I’m lucky to be with him again.” While he wants to play as long as possible, Hessman said he realizes that coaching lies ahead. “When I was playing, I didn’t look at coaching or managing. But in the last year or so, I’ve really been studying the game, scouting players. I’m taking a different look at baseball, and it’s great to get LP’s perspective. Meanwhile, Hessman feels that as a player, he can still bring

HELPING HENS
T
he Helping Hens Fund is the official charitable fund of the Toledo Mud Hens Baseball Club and is administered through the Toledo Community Foundation. Every year the Helping Hens Fund provides game tickets and meals to underserved youth throughout the Toledo Region as well as financial support to local non-profits focusing on youth recreation and wellness. In 2013, Helping Hens awarded more the $23,000 in grants to seven deserving organizations in our community. This year, Tiger Talk kicked off the Mud Hens charitable effort for the year. The night featured Detroit Tigers new manager Brad Ausmus and right-fielder Torii Hunter and raised more than $3,000 for the Helping Hens Fund.
