In today’s society, the change of fashion trend is unavoidable. This is a complex progression which contains various factors to influence it, including the cultural, social change or economic influence. Sproles and Burns (1994) stated that: “fashion is considered evolutionary rather than revolutionary”. Thus, the significant trends have become a mirror of the past history and culture, as well as an extension of existing fashion. For example, the power suit appeared in the 1980s, the time when more working opportunities and rights came for women. According to the exhibition “The Power Suit”, it described the suit as the armor for women to battle in that male world and represented women’s status, strength and leadership at that time. Nowadays, there is a huge development in trend diversity and diffusion throughout the world by the growing media platforms. Global consumers tend to inspire fashion ideas and explore their own styles on internet. This essay will be divided in two part. The first part will go depth in how trends work in the fashion world and to consider the impact in fashion marketing. The second part will focus on a significant trend this year – corset, which contains a rich history and makes a comeback now. It will include the evolution of the corset, the result from both primary and secondary will illustrate the reason why this classic accessory still remains an undoubtable status today, and how it combines to vary types of clothing to meet modern needs.

What is FashionTrend Fig.12
The trend tends to be a general direction or movement. [Stone, 2008] To be more specific, the trend formed after a particular style
has been popular with runway to high-street and has a high demand through consumer group. Therefore, the trend can be seen as the weather vanes in the fashion industry. It leads to the current needs and the main direction of product development, which is the core consideration for a fashion business. 5
Trend Forecasting As Sproles and Burns sais, the trend forecasting is both an art and a science. There are various social factors need to be found out and analyzed by their potential influence. For instance, the changing in economy such as inflation could decrease consumer’s living standard and purchasing power. So the classic and preppy style clothing has become more popular, such as the ripped jean which did just a little innovation of traditional jeans still developed as a trend in last few years, because consumer would be conservative on fashion consumption and prefer the functional style products when the economy is not doing well. (Keiser and Garner,2003) Many trends would run through a lifespan process made by Everett Rogers. It has been used as a key theory to do the trend forecasting now, because the system indicates the popularity and following of a trend, highlight where trends were heading, and point out the duration of a trend which indicated by the curve.

RISING OF NEW MEDIA
Fig.23
Fig.25
9
Fig.24
The growing platform of social media speed up the rate of fashion change and raise their influence today. In contrast, the traditional media such as fashion journalism, PR and marketing activities tend to be the fundamental steps for a trend development, they are restricted by region much more and spread slowly than Internet, even though they point out the current trend directly to the public. In the recent years, new media such as Instagram, fashion blog and Pinterest have become the headstream of a trend rather than just follow it. Any little details will be magnified and spread though the new media in a short time. Meantime, the fashion is not just come from the luxury brands anymore, but also the street - from various fashion tribes with a faster demand for change and unique than before. Photographer, celebrities, film, art, any from of art will all be spread and translate to a fashion style quickly through the media. Moreover, people’s comment on recent merchandise will be a key for brand to improve the trend in the future. Overall, everyone can be a trend maker in the fashion world, but how to explore it, filter it, then improve it are the essence of trend forecasting. Fig.26

W i t h a re t u r n t o f e m i n i n i t y, t h e corset style is making a comeback f o r S / S 1 8 .
A BRIEF HISTORY OF CORSET
This fashion element owns a rich history in western culture and last for 400 years as an essential part for fashionable drees with the name of “instrument of torture”. It first appeared in the first half of the sixteenth history with
t h e c o n t ro v e r s i a l voices. During the Victoria era, corsetry seemed as a control of women’s social rights and exploited their sexuality; However, in the 1920s, the corset transformed into a positive connotation such as high social status, artistry, bea ut y a nd s el f - d i s ci pl i n e , and being “the standard of fashionable elegance” (The Corset and the Crinoline, 1868)

16
Why Corset Again The pursuit of beauty changed slowly from past to now, but the seek for individuality is everlasting. La Mode Illustree goes, fashion is inflexible on one point: ladies must be slender. Indeed, the typically praise to women says that “a slender waist” or “a beautiful curve of hip and breast”. The corset make women looks smaller than those generally worn, and build the graceful figure easily. The modern corsetry exists to against the past impression of “Cruel constriction”. Now, it is a reflection of the rising femininity in society. Women is not afraid of putting this underwear element as an outwear and show their unique feminine charm. The waist-cinching style maintains its original concept that focus of male gaze, but also breaks the purpose of constrain female at the same time.
17
What's new The corset back to public e y e i n a m o r e contemporary style revamped in various application and not just an underwear any more. It is a fashion accessory, and even simplified to a lace-up detail to combine with different clothing, from top, hoodie, dress to trousers and even bags and jewelry. In the recent time, the corset is not about 19th century femininity, it is about “the ultimate in layering”. (Hayley Spencer, 2017) It often matches to an oversized shirt or casual T-shirt, or polish to a jumper, or a twist to a simple blazer. In a word, the corset has a great wearability and more possibilities now. As an accessory - the belt was popular with its leather design such as sturdier leather mixed with boned satin styles in 2017. However, it showed a tendency to be replaced by lightweight cotton, denim and linen in the coming year. In contrast with past, the wider waist belt has become more popular with the detail design such as corset lacing and tied fastenings. Fig.33

After that, other luxury brands such as Balenciaga, Gucci, Isabel Marant caught on this trend quickly, and brings more surprising look like a thick leather style with oversized buckles. Then, this trend came done to the high street as well, such as Z a r a , To p s h o p , U r b a n Outfitter. They have done a hard work on creating various types of corset look to the mass market, including the blouse and hoodie with lace-up detailing (Topshop), and upgraded a basic shirt with embroidered corset (Zara). 20

“This trend came to our store about a couple of months ago, and they made a great sale here” - Charlotte, the Topshop Nottingham stylist B a s i c a l l y, t h e corset trend followed the trickle-down theory which came from elite class to lower class (McCracken, 1 9 8 5 ; Simmel,1904; Veblen,1899)The Victorian corset might be a symbol of confinement in the history, but it was back in a completely new way. As mentioned before, Prada brought the trend as an outwear in 2016 and layered them over suit and blazer.
easily that they put the corset products at their window display or at the eye-catching place in store. By contrast to luxury brands, the low price, obviously, is the biggest selling point for highs t re e t b r a n d s . “ T h i s t re n d attracts people who age from 17-25 years old, and most of them are students. I think the cheap price and the wearablity make it easier for these students to follow a trend” The stylist William Crachel from Urban Outfitters Nottingham says.
As expected, this trend has generated buzz and has a huge demand through the young women. Many highstreet brands response this situation quickly and began to add different product lines of corset trend. Balenciaga There are still some problems when the corset trend spread from highfashion to high-street. Firstly, the sophisticated and unique design has disappeared among the mass market due to the price and material limit. High-street brands have to simplify the corset style to make it more accessible to everyday wearers due to the public demand. As a 29

result, the black and white belt has become the most universal item of this trend. As William says, the way they match the corset in Urban Outfitters is quite similar with other shops, such as ASOS and H&M they all “groups together within a trend or styled with T-shirt and denim

ASOS Forever 21 Secondly, the atmosphere of a city will impact the trend diffusion as well. As Miranda Kerr said: “I would be very out of the place if I wear knee boots in Maibu, but in New York, I can really go for it and not have to worry.” The acceptability of this trend in city like Nottingham is not as high as the sales volume. Although “it made a great sale in store”, as Charlotte says, there is still Fig.64 not many people wear this trend on street. The corset trend looks too flashy due to the peaceful city environment, there is not many business streets and shopping malls like London. People would think the trend is more suitable for fashion shooting and special occasion, but not the daily life.

In view of the colourful ambience, it was hard to achieved a balance with the clothing and model. Hence, the black, white and grey clothing and cool face without smile had been chosen. Finally, they worked successful with the vibrantly colored graffiti background. The model Ursula Shapiro is a beautiful girl with long straight hair, she brings a sense of mystery and peaceful from her facial features and temperament. However, when she posed for photography, there were a sense of powerful and confident came from within instead. The corset trends here were not as popular as in other busy cities such as New York or Tokyo, but from the pictures, the trend were still created sparks with this city in some ways, and show its unique charm here.

Conclusion
The fashion world is full of competition and elimination, it is easy for expierening a fluctuate or even downward trend for any fashion element.(Fashion cycle, fig 70)It is hard for business but benefit the public that there are more options for consumers thanks to the constant changing fashion. They have brought many fabulous trends to consumers and showed a high possibilities of trends. Moreover, the corset trend proved that there is a perpetual cycle works in fashion world - it has experienced a revolution from Victoria, and gave a come back today in a completely new way as an outwear.

Obviously, it has attained a huge success in the media world and brought a great sale in the mass market due to the trend’s contemporary style and high occurrence rate among celebrities. However, this trend is still remained at the growth step in the trend’s life cycle. Even though the acceptance in mass market has increased, there were still not many people wear this trend in the real world, and has not make it as their daily life clothing or accessories yet.
Fig.71
Buy less Choose well Make it last. Vivienne Westwood For the future, the trends will still developed rely on the increasing social media platform. Make the corset as an example, the media such as Instagram and Pinterest will provide more real-man examples on this trend and consumers can find the people who has the familiar style with them and learn from each other, that is easy for fashion followers to research than magazine and journalism. Last but not least, the ethical consumption will take a lead in the fashion world in the future, and 40% young people have show their interested in eco-friendly fabric in the market. [Tamara Sender, 2017] Companies such as H&M began integrating the social responsibility into their mission. They gave consumer discount when they bring in old clothing in store and provide
a collection featuring 100 percent sustainable materials in 2010. The reason seems to be obvious, t h e i n c re a s i n g c o n c e r n a b o u t labour issues and environmental problem has appeared from the past decades, people has begun to expect the fashion business to focus not only on profit, but also their duty in the society. As a result, there will be more sustainable design contains green fabric and recycled materials in the fashion market, the brands will try their best to continuously minimize physical impact on the environment.

The images taken from the styling shoot are targeted to young and middle-aged female, and aimed to give them an insight about how to understand and catch up this trend, this is the reason why it is going to be featured in Glamour magazine. The Glamour is an optimistic magazine and empowering women more than others who focused on couture such as Vogue. They are good at translating the style and trend for the real live of women who desire to be the trend follower by providing useful fashion advice and stylistic photos. Due to this, as the corset trend were reappeared from the catwalk show and spread quickly by its high wearability on the street style, this could be more appealing, this will be more appealing to this types of reader.
