Digestive Make-over By Shona Wilkinson

Love your

E

veryone has digestive problems from time to time. Many digestive problems may be uncomfortable or embarrassing, but not necessarily serious or long-lasting. Others can be controlled with simple changes in your diet. But sometimes symptoms can be a sign of a more serious digestive problem. If you are in any doubt, check with your GP.

Common signs of a digestive complaint may be – Nausea and Vomiting Heartburn Constipation Bloating Belching

digestive system There are steps you can take to help your digestion.

1

Feed it properly – Your digestive system is like a piece of fine machinery. Many different parts work together to process food. In order to get the maximum benefit from your food, make sure the type of food you put into it is of the highest quality. We want the best digestive system so use the best fuel! To improve and maintain a healthy digestive system, it is important to eat a balanced and varied diet. Think vegetables – packed full of nutrients that will help your digestive system function properly. Eat plenty of dark-green leafy vegetables such as broccoli, spinach and cabbage.

Flatulence Acid Reflux Diarrhea Cramping

Dried fruit, such as dates, figs, and prunes are good sources of dietary fibre. Beans and legumes – if you don’t have time to cook dried beans, buy canned but make sure you rinse them thoroughly before cooking. Lentils and split peas are less gas-forming than other legumes. Ground flaxseeds are a gentle laxative. They can be useful for constipation, damage to the intestine wall from laxative use, irritable bowel, and to soothe inflammation. Sprinkle ground flaxseeds on rice, grains, salads or any other meal of your choice.

2 3 4

Address any food allergies/sensitivities. Some people have an adverse reaction to certain foods which can place a stress on the digestive system. A food allergy test is available.

Get enough water – Carry a large bottle of water around with you and sip throughout the day.

Increase good gut bacteria - Not all bacteria is bad. Of these, the bacteria Lactobacillus acidophillus and Bifidobacterium bifidum are considered good “probiotic” bacteria because they can help to maintain intestinal health. Consider a good quality probiotic supplement.

5

Chew ! – Digestion begins in the mouth so thoroughly chew each and every bite of food.

Top medicinal chef

Dale Pinnock Offers a couple of delicious summer recipes to help you top up on the key nutrients and make the healthy boost of summer last a little bit longer‌

Raw stuffed peppers with olive and artichoke pate

Spicy king prawns with ginger and spring onions

This is a fabulous vegetarian summer dish. It is light, crunchy, refreshing, and is wonderful for your skin too.

This is a fabulous vegetarian summer dish. It is light, crunchy, refreshing, and is wonderful for your skin too.

Ingredients:

Ingredients:

1 large red pepper 1 small jar of artichoke hearts 2 handfuls of green olives 1 large clove of garlic - finely chopped 2 tablespoons of Viridian Nutrition 100% organic Ultimate Beauty Oil

2 handfuls of uncooked king prawns - shelled and deveined 2 cloves of garlic - finely chopped 1 large spring onion - coarsely chopped 1 inch piece of fresh ginger - finely chopped 1 red chilli finely chopped 2 teaspoons of honey 1 tablespoon of coconut oil Sesame oil and soy sauce to taste

Method: Place the olives, artichokes, garlic, and oil into a food processor, along with a generous pinch of salt. Blend to make a smooth sumptuous pate. Cut the pepper in half, and fill with the pate. Serve on a light spinach salad. Benefits: Artichokes are a rich source of caffeoylquinic acid, which is known to increase both the production of bile, and also the rate at which it is released from the gall bladder. Bile is one of the major transport mechanisms for fat soluble toxins. Increasing their rate of removal can help to keep the skin clear. Bile is also vitally important in the correct digestion and utilisation of dietary fats. Increasing the absorption of good fats can give the skin a plump dewy texture and increase its ability to hold on to moisture. Good all round. Olives have long been associated with beauty and skin health. They are a very rich source of the antioxidant nutrient vitamin E. Vitamin E helps to reduce free radical damage within fatty tissues and cell membranes, so may be a vital nutrient for reducing skin aging and improving overall skin appearance. Red Peppers are bursting with a whole range of powerful compounds. firstly, the chemicals responsible for the deep vivid red colour, are compounds called flavonoids, which have a very powerful antioxidant property. All varieties of peppers contain a large amount of a compound called beta carotene, which is also a colour pigment, ranging from yellow to deep orange. Beta carotene is the plant source of vitamin A. Beta carotene is also a fat soluble antioxidant. This means that it will be most active within fatty tissues, especially the fatty areas of subcutaneous tissue of the skin. This will help to protect the skin from free radical damage, and can help to maintain elasticity and plumpness.

Healthy Living 7

Method: Melt the coconut oil in a large pan. Add the garlic, ginger, and chilli. saute until the garlic becomes fragrant. Throw in the prawns, honey, and a few dashes of soy sauce, and saute until the prawns become pink and firm. The honey will also start to caramelise and make the sauce a little sticky. At this point, add about 1 tsp of sesame oil and add the chopped spring onions, and it is ready to serve. Serve with quinoa and salad. Benefits: Prawns are a fabulous skin food. Firstly they are a rich source of selenium, which is used by the body to make a substance called Super Oxide Dismutase - one of the body’s most powerful intrinsic antioxidants, which helps to protect the skin from free radical damage. This is particularly beneficial in the summer, as super oxide dismutase is believed to be very effective against sun damage. The second beneficial compound in prawns, is a carotenoid called astaxanthin. This is the chemical compound that gives prawns their vivid pink colour when cooked, and also the compound that gives flamingoes their pink plumage (which arises from their high consumption of shrimps). Like all carotenoids, astaxanthin is fat soluble, and as such can naturally accumulate in the fatty subcutaneous layer of the skin. As carotenoids accumulate here, they can protect the root of the collagen matrix that maintains skins structure, from free radical damage, maintaining elasticity and smoothness of skin.

How to B O O S T ENERGY

NAT URALLY

M

ost people would love to leap out of bed each morning, full of vitality, but around 10% suffer from persistent tiredness; however, what we eat can play a large part in our natural energy levels. For many people, life is not conducive to high energy levels; poor sleep, hormonal disturbances, ‘stress of life’, lack of exercise, but most of all poor diet takes its toll on our energy levels. Keeping energy levels balanced relies on a number of factors including good sleep, adequate exercise and a good, balanced and wholesome diet with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables.

Eating your way to better energy Food can be a double-edged sword; the foods we eat and enjoy can give us energy but certain foods, especially eaten late at night, can make us sluggish and tired. Sugar and EnergyToo much sugar will have a negative effect on vitality. Sugar is linked with the hormone serotonin. When serotonin levels are balanced we should feel mellow, relaxed, optimistic and focused. However, serotonin is also linked to the addictive side of behaviour and can cause us to crave alcohol, sugar and cigarettes. Sugar sensitive people tend to have low serotonin levels leading to a lack of control over impulsive behaviours, often causing poor food choices. The bulk of our diet relies on carbohydrates which are anything from simple white sugar through to slow release cereals so it is important how and when we eat this food group. In general, carbohydrates can be grouped into five major classes: alcohols, sugars, refined food (‘white’ food), wholefood (‘brown’ food) and alive food (fresh ‘green’ food). The wholefood and alive foods release their energy slower and are the ones to choose to help vitality. Increase the following foods in the diet: brown rice, beans, oatmeal, oatcakes, green peas, broccoli and cooked spinach. To help balance the carbohydrates, eating adequate protein is vital. Good protein sources are white meats, eggs, nuts and beans. Healthy Living 8

By Maria Webb

Alcohol and Caffeine Alcohol is a depressant drug that slows the nervous system and disturbs normal sleep patterns. Caffeine stimulates the nervous system making insomnia more likely. Alcohol and caffeine are both addictive, and the danger is that to gain the same effect, over time as you become tolerant you will need to increase consumption. To balance your energy levels it is wise to reduce them to a minimum.

Exercise, Relaxation and Sleep Adults, in general, require around eight hours, undisturbed sleep. Too much, however, can be equally bad for fatigue levels, and more than eleven hours of sleep has been linked to excessive daytime sleepiness. When it comes to exercise, it can become a vicious cycle. When we feel too tired to exercise, we put it off for another day. This means that when we come to do things, we become tired more easily. Researcher Tim Puetz, at the University of Georgia revealed that inactive people who regularly feel the symptoms of fatigue can increase their energy by up to 20% and decrease their fatigue by 65% with regular exercise.

Supplementary Help When the body is feeling fatigued it requires a good supply of vitamins and minerals such as Iron, the B group of vitamins, Vitamin D, Folic acid and biotin. These can be supplied by eating dark green leafy vegetables, poultry, eggs, nuts, seeds and wholegrains. However, when we try to cram as much as we can into our days, eating healthily often takes a back seat and it really is worth considering taking a good multi vitamin and mineral complex. There are some great products available now, such as the one-a-day ‘Alive’ supplement which contain all the key nutrients found in vegetables, fruits combined with omega oils, enzymes, vitamins and minerals. Omega oils have become the hot products for health over the past few years but their place in boosting emotional health and easing fatigue are now well established. High quality marine lipids help to mend damaged brain cells and over time even reverse the changes caused by poor diet which in turn will improve mood, ease fatigue and boost energy.

Puzzled about Probiotics? By Yannick Boribon ND

They’re in your yoghurts, your drinks, your chocolates… Probiotics seem to be everywhere these days. But what exactly are they, and what can they do for you? What are probiotics? Probiotics such as L. acidophilus are microorganisms which are beneficial for the body. Benefits include supporting digestion, aiding the breakdown of foods & absorption of nutrients, as well as boosting immunity. Prebiotics are the food source for probiotics; they selectively stimulate the growth of probiotics in the body. So in a nutshell, probiotics & prebiotics are little helpers for your gut.

The gut – why so important? More than 70% of your body’s immunity is determined in your gut. The gut is where food enters the body, where nutrients are sorted from waste, and where essential vitamins and minerals are absorbed into the bloodstream. A large variety of health problems are increasingly linked back to the gut – including poor immunity, low energy levels, skin irritations such as eczema or acne, and even obesity. One key way to support a healthy gut is to ensure you have a good balance of probiotics over pathogens; your body is naturally host to both types of bacteria, but the trick is in keeping a higher amount of good over bad. This is why there is so much hype over probiotics at the moment; people are beginning to understand that when you look after your gut, you look after your whole body. Of course, as always, it is necessary to take a holistic approach to your health, but the gut is a great place to start! Healthy Living 10

What should you look for in a probiotic?

1

Probiotic yoghurt drinks can have high levels of sugar, if not artificial sweeteners. What’s more the probiotic content can be negligible, so best to go for a supplement.

2

To refrigerate or not to refrigerate? New technology now allows manufacturers to make shelf-stable formulas. You may hence want to choose a probiotic that you can keep in your handbag, on your desk, or your bedside table – wherever means you wont forget it!

OptiBac Probiotics EXTRA Strength DTEC12 | Price: £22.49 | Size: 30 Caps For daily wellbeing EXTRA Strength guarantees 20 billion microorganisms per capsule. It is multi-strain, with 5 different probiotics to target different areas of the gut, including L. acidophilus NCFM® - probably the most researched strain of acidophilus in the world! This new formula is ideal for those of you seeking a premium probiotic.

3

Multi strain probiotics are generally a good idea. As different strains naturally reside in different areas of the gut, taking more than one will support a larger area of your gut.

4

Do your research and make sure they have done theirs – when choosing a probiotic, go for a company with an expertise in digestive health. Reliable probiotics should be backed up with clinical trials.

5

Get the correct strains for your needs. Time and time again, research shows that different probiotic strains will have different effects on the body. Try to find a probiotic supplement that is tailored for your health condition rather than a generic L. acidophilus for all.

Acidophilus Pearls | ENZ04306 Price: £14.95 | Size: 30 Caps Acidophilus Pearls take probiotic products to the next level. Our kids deserve the BEST! By Cassandra Barns More and more people are becoming aware of the importance of what we feed our children. Giving our kids a balanced, nutrient-rich diet can have benefits for not only their growth and physical health, but also their intellect, behaviour and mental health.

The following are some basic guidelines for a good, healthy diet for your child: Include plenty of fresh vegetables and fruit every day, in any way you can – think of a ‘rainbow’ of colours and try to include some of every colour for a broad range of nutrients.

Plenty of omega 3 fats in the form of fresh oily fish such as mackerel, sardines or salmon – or any fresh fish if your child really won’t eat these – any is better than none!

Include complex carbohydrates in the form of wholegrain pastas, rice and breads; try introducing other grains such as oats, barley and quinoa. Unsweetened mueslis or other unsweetened wholegrain breakfast cereals can be a good start to the day for most children – try to add some fresh fruit to them and maybe a sprinkle of pumpkin or sunflower seeds, to give a slower release of energy throughout the day. Avoid sugary breakfast cereals, white bread and other ‘white’ grains.

Eggs are a great source of nutrients for a growing child. Choose organic or Columbus eggs which are likely to have better nutrient levels and more omega 3 fats. They are a great source of protein, B vitamins and iron.

Do our kids need supplements? Supplements are never a replacement for a healthy diet. But as hard as we may try, getting ideal levels of nutrients into our children may not always be easy, partly due to declining vitamin and mineral levels in our fresh foods. For this reason, a good children’s multivitamin and mineral can be helpful to fill in the gaps, particularly if your child seems run down or appears to be ‘catching everything going’. Research shows that making sure children get the right balance of ‘good fats’ in their diet can be helpful for their concentration, learning and behaviour. Unless your child eats a lot of fish, a supplement containing fish oil (providing omega 3 fatty acids EPA and DHA) and omega 6 fats can be helpful. A great addition to these can be a children’s probiotic (‘good bacteria’). The friendly flora in our gut are thought to have many roles – including seeing off the ‘bad’ bacteria and other bugs, synthesizing vitamins, helping with digestion and supporting our immune system, general health and wellbeing. The numbers and activity of the good bacteria can be reduced for many reasons, including antibiotic use and poor diet (especially lack of fibre or excess sugary foods). A daily probiotic can help to put back these good bacteria.

Avoid other sugary foods, sweets and other ‘junk’ foods. This includes soft drinks. Even fruit juice is not great, due to the sugar content (even if it has no added sugar) – stick to no more than 1-2 glasses of fruit juice a day, diluted half and half with water. Freshly squeezed is always better than shop-bought! Don’t deprive your child of the occasional treat however. Following these suggestions can however be difficult if your child does not want to eat the healthy food that you put in front of him or her. A few tips can really encourage their enjoyment and willingness to try new or healthy foods. These can include:

Allowing your child to participate – in preparing meals, and in choosing foods when out shopping.

For young children, making mealtimes fun by being creative – for example, making a face or the shape of a house with vegetables on the plate.

Don’t force a child to eat all the food on their plate, and avoid ‘rewarding’ him or her with sugary or unhealthy desserts if they eat their vegetables... this can make the healthy food become a chore instead of enjoyable in itself.

Try raw vegetables as ‘finger food’, with salsa or hummous dips – most kids love to eat with their hands. Healthy Living 16

Coconut water By Lorna Driver-Davies, Nutritionist

Coconut water has become very popular, especially with exercise enthusiasts, professional athletes and celebrities such as Madonna, Demi Moore and supermodel Heidi Klum

S

o why all the interest? Coconut water has been drunk in tropical countries for hundreds of years but in Europe and the USA we are becoming fans due to the positive nutritional benefits of drinking the natural water extracted out of coconuts. Historically, wounded soldiers in wars drank coconut water to improve blood plasma levels (when no blood donations were available).

natural and absorbable electrolyte source possible.

open up cell receptors and this can have a positive effect on metabolism.

Coconut water also makes an excellent recovery drink after a hangover and may help to cleanse and alkalize the body as it is a great food source of magnesium and potassium.

Coconut water contains high levels of lauric acid, which the body uses to make monolaurin, a disease-fighting fatty acid derivative. The lauric acid found in coconut water is the same as that found in human breast milk (which is why breast milk is so supportive to baby’s immume system). Lauric acid has anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties that may protect the body against various infections and support the immune system.

Coconut water is probably best known as a natural source of electrolytes, to help rehydrate the body after exercise. Electrolytes help the brain and nervous system transmit and receive vital signals and allow the muscles to contract and relax (allowing the muscles to recover).

Women may find drinking coconut water beneficial as it magnesium content may assist with balancing the menstrual cycle, supporting the body during times of stress and for energy in general. It is also low in fat and calories. For men, magnesium and potassium are crucial to support the heart and blood pressure – in fact, coconut water contains more potassium than a banana!

Sports and exercise fans drink it after a workout because it’s important to replace electrolytes after exercise to avoid dehydration, exhaustion and muscle cramps. Some athletes also find drinking it before intensive exercise sessions helps them to compete better, faster and for longer. Manufactured sports drinks have to add electrolytes but coconut water already contains them – giving your body the most

If you suffer from the common office ‘afternoon slump’, then coconut water can be a refreshing and reviving drink which has none of the negative effects that tea and coffee do. Some may also find due that coconut water may be helpful to drink alongside a weight loss program (combined with portion control and healthy eating). One reason for this may be the potassium and magnesium help to

In summary, coconut water can be beneficial for the following reasons. 1. Alkalising / PH balancing 2. Anti fungal 3. Replaces electrolytes after exercise 4. Hydrating and refreshing 5. Provides minerals in an absorbable food form 6. Supports the immune system 7. May support the heart and blood pressure 8. Low in calories and fat 9. Ideal as a ‘pick me up’ drink Healthy Living 18
