WE ARE NOTHING BUT CHEMICAL! WHY C HE M I CA L -F R EE IS A F A L L A CY , AND THE C HE M ICA L S Y OU R EALLY SH O U L D B E A V OID ING .

The word chemical has gotten a bad rep in recent times, and we’re regularly hearing how more and more of us are turning to “chemical-free” living. But the truth is, there is no such thing. Water is a chemical, we are chemical, every beauty product, whether clean, green, natural, organic or other… is formulated with chemicals. You get the message. Whilst we understand the intent of the “chemical-free” movement, the term is wholly inaccurate. Not all synthetic chemicals (which is what chemical-free supposedly infers) are bad for us, and by no means is everything natural good for us. Clean beauty is a term we are hearing used more and more every day, and this is much better terminology for the aforementioned values. Even before the days of mass production, questionable ingredients have been used in beauty products. Arabian women traditionally used lead as eyeliner, and the Victorians used a white lead-based powder to enhance their complexion, and even supplemented their diets with arsenic to give them a healthy glow. Realising their poisonous qualities, doctors soon put a stop to these deadly trends. Today, we know there are chemicals used in mainstream beauty manufacturing that are either known or suspected to cause health issues but due to limited tests and data, plus a lack of regulatory authorities in the industry, these substances continue to be used. Whilst concentrations may be low in products, who knows whether these ingredients are playing their part in health problems we are seeing more and more of, through exposure and/or bioaccumulation. Here are some potentially health hazardous ingredients that you won’t find in any of our products:

FEED YOUR SKIN WITH VITAMINS

As we age, our facial structure changes. This is down partially to internal ageing (i.e. our genes) but also environmental factors, such as UV rays and pollution. Sun exposure is one of the most avoidable causes of wrinkles, sagging and skin discolouration. A study released in 2013 found that UV exposure appears to be responsible for 80% of visible facial aging signs[1]. The study also found that a two per cent increase in skin damage ages a face by three years. But just how does ageing in the skin happen? Well, our skin is made up of a matrix of collagen and elastin which, over time, are attacked by enzymes such as matrixmetalloproteinase (MMP), collagenase, elastase and hyaluronidase. A small amount of all these enzymes are required to break down “used up” proteins to maintain healthy skin, but over-production of MMP accelerates the visible signs of ageing. One of the main causes of MMP overproduction is, you’ve guessed it, UV rays! But UV rays don’t just cause overproduction of MMP, they also increase levels of free radicals in the skin and decrease antioxidant levels in the skin. Free radicals attack our skin’s matrix further and damage the structure, whilst antioxidants help protect the skin from free radicals. 10

Skinamins Antioxidants come in many different forms, but did you know that two vitamins we hear so much about every day, vitamin C and E, are effective antioxidants and can be found in many skincare products.

VITAMIN E is the main antioxidant used by the skin to protect itself from damage and levels of this vitamin in the skin fall as a result. Your skin is exposed to damaging UV radiation and air pollutants on a daily basis, which trigger the production of damaging free radicals.

ita m

V

VITAMIN C helps to relieve the symptoms and appearance of dry skin when used topically, however it also helps the skin cells

repair damaged tissues. Vitamin C plays a major

in C

role in the production of collagen, a protein found in the body that, along with elastin, is responsible for the skin’s structure. Vitamin C can also be used directly on the skin as a protection technique against harmful rays and pollutants.

THE JĀSÖN C-EFFECTS™ RANGE is formulated with an exclusive Multi-Antioxidant Complex; a broad spectrum skin defender that combines both vitamin C (as Ester-C - vitamin C in its most stable form for skincare) and vitamin E plus two more powerful antioxidant ingredients: Green Tea Extract helps delay ageing of the skin, firms, soothes, helps both prevent and repair sun damage and evens out skin tone. Green tea has been shown to reduce oxidative stress when applied topically[2] and reduces UV-induced inflammation[3]. Thioctic Acid not only gathers up free radicals thus preventing them from attacking the skin, but also helps to recycle the Vitamin C and E present in the formula by stabilising them. Thioctic acid also has powerful anti-inflammatory properties.

Hairstyles on file A LOOK AT THE LATEST HAIR TRENDS AND HOW TO ACHIEVE THEM

Big Volume From voluminous slick-backs to 70s waves, hair needs injecting with some va-va-voo !

om

We often think of volumising products being exclusively for thin, fine flyaway hair, however thick hair can easily become weighed down by moisturising and nourishing hair care. So, when trying these styles with any kind of hair, start with a volumising shampoo and conditioner, such as Giovanni 2Chic Ultra Volume. These products offer the best of both for thick, coarse and/or dry hair as they have papaya butter to help nourish whilst also building volume.

Voluminous Slick-Back

1. After towel-drying your hair, focusing on the ends of your hair apply Giovanni 2Chic Ultra Volume Leave-In Conditioner & Styling Elixir. 2. Focusing on the roots of your hair, apply Giovanni 2Chic Ultra Volume Styling Mousse. Blow dry in sections, starting at the nape of your neck and leaving the top of your head till last. Work upwards and forwards. Back brush each section to create extra volume. 3. When you come to the top section of your head, start at the front and work backwards in extra fine sections, gently back brushing and using Giovanni 2Chic Ultra Volume Hair Spray for that little bit extra. 4. To finish, use a paddle brush to smooth the look, and to hold the sides back in place, utilise some kirby grips placed a couple of inches behind the ears.

70s Waves 1. The key for this look is volume through the length of the hair, and a smoothness from root to tip. To help achieve this, make use of Giovanni 2Chic Frizz Be Gone Hair Mask in between applications of Giovanni 2Chic Ultra Volume Shampoo and Conditioner. 2. Apply Giovanni 2Chic Frizz Be Gone Taming Cream from the roots to mid-lengths of your hair, brushing through well. For extra volume at the roots of your hair, change your parting. 3. Apply Giovanni 2Chic Ultra Volume Styling Mousse from mid-lengths to end of hair. Choose your weapon: heat wands, straighteners, rollers can all be used to create the soft, big waves we want to see. Always curl away from the face for bigger, more dramatic waves. 4. Finish with a gentle brush through, and a spritz of Giovanni 2Chic Ultra Volume Hair Spray.

Straight Up On the whole, tousled waves and soft layers have been replaced with blunt bobs and super straight hair. Update your look with relative ease by ensuring you have the right products for the style. Poker Straight 1. Wash and condition as usual with Giovanni 2Chic Ultra-Sleek Shampoo and Conditioner. 2. Blot hair dry with a towel. 3. Dispense a small pump of 2Chic Ultra-Sleek Leave-In Conditioner & Styling Elixir. 4. Spray with Flat Iron Styling Mist and blow dry with a large nylon and boar bristle brush to smooth strands. 5. Heat your straightening irons and section off hair and straighten in small sections, working from the back at the bottom of your hairline to the front to ensure you don’t miss any sections in the straightening process!

Blunt Bobs

Granted, the bluntness of a bob is largely down to the cut however there are some products that can help accentuate the style. You will need to wash and style your hair regularly if you have a bob in order to keep your haircut 100! 1. To keep your hair clean you need a clarifying product which won’t cause build-up, particularly with all that frequent washing! Try Giovanni Tea Tree Triple Treat Shampoo and Conditioner. 2. After towel-drying, applying Giovanni 2Chic UltraSleek Leave-In Conditioner & Styling Elixir. This will help with definition and give your bob a glossy and sleek finish. 3. If you have an angular bob, you might want to apply LA Natural Styling Gel prior to blow drying, as this will help create the volume needed to keep your hair looking sharp. 4. Otherwise, apply Giovanni 2Chic Frizz Be Gone Anti-Frizz Hair Balm, paying particular attention to the ends, before blow drying to desired finish. Those wanting more, run your straighteners over the mid sections of your hair so as not to lose volume at the root or choppiness at the ends.

Peaky Blinders Make like a mobster and opt for a short back and sides, whilst leaving a mop top. Inspired by real-life 1920s gangsters who used their haircut to stand out from the crowd, whilst they shaved their sides for a stark contrast to the weight of hair on top, we recommend either a skin fade or keeping a bit more length on the sides for a less severe look. 1. With such a lot of hair up top, you don’t want any buildup to be weighing in, so we recommend using Giovanni 50:50 Balanced Hydrating-Clarifying Shampoo and Conditioner to keep hair in healthy condition. 2. Apply Giovanni Natural Mousse Hair Styling Foam to wet hair and blow dry your hair forwards with a vent brush. 3. Use Giovanni Wicked Wax Styling Pomade to set as you like - slicked back or swept to the side, the choice is yours!

Textured & Tousled Having long hair as a guy requires effort, leave it too long between haircuts and your hair can look stringy. Having the right product to finish off your cut is also important. You want to have texture and body for a tousled look that is just asking for fingers to run through it. 1. You definitely don’t want any buildup on long hair, so opt for something clarifying such as Giovanni Triple Treat Tea Tree Shampoo and Conditioner. 2. Apply Giovanni 2Chic Ultra Sleek Leave-In Conditioner & Styling Elixir as a buffer for the heat, and follow up by spraying Giovanni 2Chic Ultra Sleek Blow Out Styling Mist to give body and smoothness to your hair. Work through your hair with your fingertips to ensure an even application. 3. Blow dry using diffuser attachment, holding the hair dryer still whilst working in one area. Work upwards towards the crown, and ensure you are setting the hair as you want it to fall. Make sure your hair is completely dry before moving onto the next step. 4. Finish with a spritz of Giovanni

Collagen-ius What is collagen?

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body, and it gives our bodies their structure. It is found in skin tissue, ligaments, bones and blood vessels, and is also involved in the production of hair and nails. Collagen appears as an interwoven series of fibres in our tissues. You can think of it as a three dimensional mesh criss-crossed together. There is an easy way to see what collagen looks like in the body – go to a mirror and look at your eyes, the whites of your eyes are made up of almost 100% collagen.

The different types of collagen There are 28 different known types of collagen which play different roles in joints and tissues, although up to 90% of all collagen in the body is either type I, II or III.

Types I & III collagen are found in the skin and influence hair and nail thickness. Tendons are made up of about 99% of these collagen types, and ligaments about 86%.

Type II

collagen is found in cartilage and nowhere else in the body. So whilst most people will reach for glucosamine and chondroitin supplements for joint support, it is in fact type II collagen that should be the go-to supplement.

16

Why do we need to supplement with collagen? Our bodies naturally produce collagen throughout our lifetime, however after the age of 25 our collagen production declines. Structures in the body, such as joints, and tissues in the body, such as skin, break down and weaken over time. The signs and symptoms of ageing that are thought to be associated with collagen degeneration include wrinkles and sagging of the skin, thinning of hair and nails, weakening and instability of the joints, and frailty of bones.

MAKE A CO MMITM ENT The KonMari method is a way of life and state of mind that helps you to organise your environment and by doing so simplify your life. It aims to bring about order in the possessions you have, and encourages letting go of anything that no longer serves a purpose for you - or no longer “sparks joy” to use the phrase coined by Marie Kondo, the lady behind the KonMari movement! The KonMari method takes time and effort, but many people swear by the results and have had life-changing experiences from following this process. Try to find a weekend when you have no other plans or distractions, and let rip on your possessions.

If you are struggling with this, create a mood board from magazine cuttings and place in a prominent position in your home, or put together a Pinterest board for inspiration. Whilst working on this, start to think about how you will organise your belongings in an efficient way, taking inspiration from your mood boards. You may need to invest in some boxes and/ or storage units to ensure you have the means to keep all your possessions in order.

This means that you need to around your home that fall into the same category for review. Although most of your health and beauty products may be in the bathroom, you don’t want to bring everything in there as in most instances this would be totally impractical. When sorting out this category we recommend using a room with a table so you can lay all your products out on a flat surface. Failing that, your bedroom floor will do. You need to be able to take an honest look at all items and see what you have too many of, figure out what your Achilles heel is, and face those impulse buys that you haven’t even opened.

Maca is also an adaptogen and helps to balance hormones.

How coconut became a commodity and a look at its versatility across categories Coconuts can float on water and the seeds of the fruit are able to

in the water for several months. These qualities helped coconuts to disperse throughout the world, which is why coconuts were already spread far and wide before the crop was domesticated. Today, coconuts are grown in over 90 countries across the globe, with concentrations in Indonesia, The Philippines, India and Brazil, and there are an estimated 26 million acres of coconut plantations all over the world. Although difficult to establish, once plantations are up and running, coconuts are an advantageous crop for farmers for two reasons:

ď‚Œ

They offer a year-round income as they are

harvested throughout the year.

ď‚?

They are an incredibly versatile crop, with many

possible end products from one fruit - oil, water, milk, flour, sugar, shredded and there are even fabrics made out of coconut fibre!

Dem Bones Dem Bones OUR BODIES ARE PRETTY AMAZING THINGS, AND MOST OF US PROBABLY GIVE VERY LITTLE THOUGHT TO WHAT GOES ON INSIDE IN ORDER FOR US TO EXIST. Our musculoskeletal system is made from at least 650 named muscles (though some say there are upward of 840), around 206 bones in an adult skeleton (some people have more bones in their spines than others), then to join all the bones and muscles together we have cartilage, tendons and ligaments. Structurally, joints are classified by how they are joined, and can be cartilage, fibrous tissue, synovial fluid, or a combination of these. Functionally, joints can be classified by the range of possible motion, immovable (such as those in the skull), slightly movable (such as the spine) and freely movable, also known as synovial joints (such as the knees and hips). There are around 400 joints in the body, and many of the major joints in the body are what are known as synovial joints, due to the presence of synovial fluid around them.

Egg-white-like in consistency, synovial fluid is

designed to reduce friction and acts as a lubricant to ease movement of cartilage in the joints. As we age, the amount of synovial fluid in the joints decreases and the cartilage present in the joints thins. This leads to a less fluid movement and if the degeneration becomes too much, the joint can become inflamed and painful. Ligaments also shorten as we age, which leads to a lesser range of motion and also contributes to stiffness.

30

There are several nutrients crucial to healthy bones and joints, the main ones being calcium and vitamin D. Good dietary sources of calcium include: dairy, green leafy vegetables including cabbage, okra and romaine lettuce, nuts and small fish where you eat the bones (think whitebait, sardines and pilchards). Watch out for spinach! Whilst on paper it appears to be calcium-rich, it actually contains high levels of oxalates, which inhibit the absorption of calcium. For vitamin D, try to get out in the sun without sunscreen from March/April time to September for half an hour a day. You can also get some vitamin D through your diet, in foods such as oily fish, egg yolks and beef liver. It is difficult, however, to get your daily “D” through diet alone so supplementation, particularly through the winter months, is a good option. Garden of Life Vegan Vitamin D3 Spray offers a high strength supplement - 1000iu - in a highly absorbable, biologically active form of Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). Delivered in a lipid base of organic pumpkin seed oil and organic cranberry seed oil for better absorption.

THERE ARE SOME OTHER SUPPLEMENTS YOU MAY WISH TO CONSIDER TO HELP KEEP JOINTS HEALTHY: Nature’s Answer Glucosamine + Chondroitin + MSM: Glucosamine increases the formation of lubrication materials inside the joints and slows the activity of enzymes that cause joint destruction as well as aiding joint repair. Chondroitin sulfate helps cartilage retain water. Clinical studies of glucosamine have demonstrated it is effective treatment for helping with symptoms linked to joint and muscle pain. MSM has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Nature’s Answer Ginger: Ginger’s anti-inflammatory properties help with both pain relief and function of arthritic joints. Certain compounds found in ginger work in the same way as mainstream meds work for arthritis, COX-2 inhibitors.

Nature’s Answer Turmeric: The curcumin compounds in turmeric are thought to reduce pain, inflammation and stiffness related to rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.

Sprinkle a lil’something Adding a little sprinkle of certain superfoods can add not just flavour and texture to your meals but also provide some proven health benefits that you might not even have considered. That said, sprinkling superfoods is only part of the picture, what is even more important is what you are sprinkling on! Be sure to eat a balanced diet, combining good quality protein at every meal, plenty of fresh and locally grown seasonal fruit and vegetables, and drink lots of water! Here are some of our favourite superfood sprinkles, and some of the benefits you can start reaping today!

Cinnamon helps lower blood sugar levels, can

improve sensitivity to the hormone insulin and may help negate potential weight gain caused by blood sugar imbalance. A review of published papers has even pointed to the fact that cinnamon may be beneficial for the treatment of type II diabetes[1]. Cinnamon is

frequently overlooked as a superfood, but if you look through South American and Mediterranean cultures you can see that these folk have known how to use cinnamon for years. Cinnamon sticks in coffee, cocktails sprinkled with cinnamon, lasagne and cannelloni lightly spiced with cinnamon; all foods and drinks that can disrupt our blood sugar and hormone levels. Besides from helping you with blood sugar regulation, cinnamon has a multitude of health benefits including heart protection, anti-inflammatory, rich in antioxidants, brain function, and may even possess anti-carcinogenic properties! Top tips for cinnamon: Add to your coffee or hot chocolate, puddings, pastries, cocktails and definitely those cheesy sauces! Try: Organic Traditions Dual Extract Cinnamon 38

Chia seed are also high in fibre. If you are an athlete, you may wish to consider a little sprinkle of chia. The micro but mighty seed was the original food of Aztec messengers. The gelatinous external layer slows your body’s conversion rate of carbs to sugar, which means sustained energy levels for longer. That said, a study showed no positive effect of chia seed consumption on the performance of endurance exercisers[2] although plasma ALA levels were raised. With ALA being a potent antioxidant, this backs up to some degree the findings of another study that chia seed consumption reduced oxidative stress in vivo[3]. Ancient Ayurveda Ayurveda is a system of medicine with its historical roots firmly planted on the Indian subcontinent. Practice of Ayurvedic medicine dates back to at least 1500BC (this is the earliest documentation of the practice), and combines physical health, mental balance, spiritual well-being, relationships and environment. There are many plant-based treatments in Ayurveda and the ingredients may be derived from the roots, leaves, fruits, bark, or seeds of botanicals and herbs. Here, we take a look at some Ayurvedic herbs that have risen in popularity in Western culture, and the reasons why people might want to incorporate these products into their diet. Triphala translates as “three fruits, and is a combination of bibhitaki, amla berries and haritaki, which are all native to India. Triphala is antioxidant-rich and best known as a gentle bowel tonic, a digestive aid, and for supporting regular bowel movements. Ayurvedic practitioners also recommend the blend for a variety of ailments and although limited, studies suggest triphala may: be effective at promoting good oral health; encourage good skin health; and help reduce blood sugar levels. Cinnamon is a warming spice that has been used for over 5000 years in food preparation. It is revered for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and

antibacterial

properties

in

Ayurveda, and is used to support sugar

metabolism,

encourage

healthy digestion, improve joint and circulatory health, heart health and help clear the respiratory passages.

Also known as the Indian gooseberry, amla is one of the three fruits in the triphala blend. The amla berry comes from a tree sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists, and interestingly features five of the six tastes recognised in Ayurvedic medicine. Amla has incredibly high vitamin C content, which accounts for its antioxidant

properties.

Amla

also has astringent properties, which

helps

promote

a

healthy immune response. In Ayurveda, amla is considered a rejuvenating tonic that can be taken daily for a gentle internal cleanse.

Turmeric is pungent, bitter and astringent in the Rasa taste energy, heating in action according to Virya and balancing for Vata, Pitta and Kapha constitutional doshas, with a tendency to increase Vata and Pitta. It is considered a wonderful daily herb to support general well-being, vitality and health, largely due to its ability to calm inflammation in the digestive tract and throughout the body. Turmeric also helps support a healthy heart and circulatory system, aids digestion, supports the brain and nervous system, supports liver function and bolsters the immune system.

Also known as winter cherry, ashwagandha has been used in Ayurveda for thousands of years, and is considered to be one of the most powerful healing herbs. It is an adaptogen, which are a group of herbs which help to bring the body back into balance and to cope with stress. Known as Indian ginseng because of its therapeutic properties, it is commonly used as a restorative tonic in Ayurvedic medicine. A scientific study of ashwagandha indicated that the herb does indeed possess properties that support antioxidant activity, inflammatory response and rejuvenating properties.

U L TIM A T E O R GANIC T R A D I T I ON S M ATCHA LATTE

Smooth, creamy and oh-so green! Matcha latte has the best of everything and will warm you from inside on even the coldest of days. When the temperature rises, use cold milk and pour over ice. INGREDIENTS 1 tsp Organic Traditions Matcha Latte with Probiotics and Vanilla 3 tbsp warm water 300 ml vanilla almond milk (or milk of your choice) optional - sweetener

METHOD 1) Place the matcha green tea powder into a cup or mug. 2) Add the warm water and mix with a spoon or whisk to get a super smooth consistency and ensure the mixture is not lumpy. 3) Warm your milk in a saucepan. We recommend vanilla almond milk for the best results, the vanilla brings the sweetness and the almond a certain depth of flavour. 4) Add the milk to the cup or mug and whisk the paste and milk together until well combined. 5) Dust with matcha green tea powder to finish.
