MODULE Light Wall
LIGHT WALL Initially, on the very first day we were asked to prepare an individual model in 1:20 scale and the wall was supposed to be made by interlocking the tiles. Following is the very initial model keeping the shapes simpler and interlocking them in a very simple way.
Then we selected a wall in common as it was a group project and decided to keep tiles of TRIANGULAR shape because looking at the technical part of structure, TRIANGLE is the most stable shape and structure in itself out of all other shapes. We experimented a lot of designs for the wall .
LIGHT WALL Inspiration: Final proposal is inspired from one of the LE COURBUSIER’s building in Ahmedabad, “MILL OWNER’S ASSOCIATION”, built in 1954. That building in the heart of city, is designed in such a way that its diagonally aligned facade barricade the views and disruption from street while allowing air and indirect sunlight to enter the expanse. It serves idea of personal space very strictly.
Le Courbusier Triangles at the base and on the layers are aligned diagonally so that there is mild wind flow. Even there is no direct sunlight because direct sunlight is sometimes strident and unbearable, whereas indirect sunlight is calm and pleasant and also soothes our body as it is not harsh. The structure is designed in such a way that people can have their personal space and their privacy is not disturbed as well. It is a stable structure where in external and internal curves are also drilled. Design also is inspired to some extent from FRANK GEHRY’s post modern architectural styles where in he mostly experimented with interlocking structures.

Then keeping TRIANGULAR shaped tiles fixed, we collectively thought of making a little complex model to serve the light and shadow requirement more efficiently. Which led us to make the following model. But then it was too complex and did not look organized and organic. It did not follow any pattern. It was a random structure but it did show the light and shadow effect very well and was a stable structure too. This design was inspired by the unpredictable human nature which is very random. So finally we came to a proposal which followed a pattern and looked very organic. It served all the requirements of module. We first made a prototype in 1:20 scale which in real life was supposed to be 2mX2m and the model for final assessment was to be 1mX1m. With proper measurements we got the tiles cut in MDF sheets in the FAB LAB. Assembled all parts and made the final proposal.
Also, design is inspired by the ZAHA HADID’s concept of Global Age Public Space. Which states that architecture should be done in such a way that people can socialize and get to gather but at the same time can maintain their privacy also. The wall is designed keeping its structural stability in mind. It also serves the light and shadow effect very well.
