Deborah Mitchell - celebrity therapist TIP ONE

Tips Grab a handful of stinging nettles, try not to get stung!! Place them in a bowl of warm water; it will take the sting out of the nettles- if you want you can keep the liquid for later, it is a great diuretic and good for spots. Whilst the warm water removes the sting it will leave the ability to make the skin look younger and firmer, the apitoxin found in the nettles is similar to that found in my Bee Venom mask but without the moisturising properties. Mix this with liquid sugar and leave on as a face mask, the skin will look instantly smoother.

Tricks TIP TWO Eye bags need no longer be the bane of your life, banish them to the past with these little tips: sleeping on your front and using very heavy eye creams are terrible if you are trying to minimize them. They build up lymphatic fat in the eye cavities. If your eyes are a little swollen, don’t sit around worrying – perform a minute miracle massage under your eyes. Press all your fingers repeatedly under the eyes as if you are playing the piano do this throughout the day and notice your swollen bags disappear entirely.

TIP THREE Tighten the contours of your face by palming; this is a fantastic way to tone and anti-age the skin and smooth out fine lines. To do this place your elbows on a hard surface and place your head in your hands as if you are tired, start in the centre and role the palms outwards ironing the skin – do this daily and I promise you will see amazing results. 7

SEASONAL REVIVAL

MSM. Certain vitamins and minerals can be called nutritional cosmetics, such is their beneficial impact on the health and vitality of skin, hair and nails. One of the most popular, researched and effective nutritional cosmetics is pine bark extract (the patented form is called Pycnogenol). Pine bark extract is a naturally-occurring complex of several water-soluble, highly bioavailable, antioxidant nutrients including compounds known as bioflavonoids, fruit acids and proanthocyanidins (OPCs).

A quarterly cleanse around the equinox and solstice can help remove toxins and tonify the kidneys, liver, lymphatic system and bowel; in certain spiritual circles that fasting or cleansing during these times is more effective than at other times in the planetary calendar. Herbs including dandelion, nettle, cleavers, artichoke and burdock (all food-herbs) have gentle cleansing properties which encourage the removal of waste material from the body.

COLLAGEN SUPPORT

OPCs effectively protect collagen structures in several ways. They reinforce the collagen matrix of connective tissue, protect against free radical damage, and inhibit collagen damage caused by inflammation and infection. OPCs have been shown to be effective in cases of psoriasis and the hyperpigmentation disorder melasma (chloasma or age spots).

Everyone knows that it is collagen that gives skin its firmness, but it is a naturally-occurring molecule called hyaluronic acid what nourishes and hydrates the collagen. Hyaluronic Acid acts as a skin-plumper by binding to water and thus keeping the skin wrinkle-free. Together hyaluronic acid and collagen are vital to maintaining the skin’s layers and structure. Contributing to its amazing moisture ability, hyaluronic acid acts as a space-filler in dermal layers between skin cells and produces a long-lasting skin enhancement which makes skin soft, smooth and elastic, especially for the face and lips.

VEINS & CAPILLARIES Grape Seed Extract is also an excellent source of OPCs. Good clinical evidence has also shown OPCs to be effective in treating venous insufficiency, varicose veins, capillary fragility (thread veins) and disorders of the retina. OPCs protect against freeradical damage, suggested to be a major cause of the ageing process. The antioxidant effect is 50 times greater than that of vitamin C and E. A major advantage of these molecules is that they are taken up into the cell membranes and protect against both water- and fat-soluble free-radicals.

Another key factor in the production of collagen is MSM (methylsulphonylmethane) which is a naturally occurring form of organic sulphur found in all living organisms. MSM is found in many common foods, including: milk (where it is found in high concentrations), meat, fish and a variety of fruits, vegetables and grains. However, when foods are processed, heated or dried, the essential MSM is readily lost. Therefore, unless a person’s diet is composed primarily of milk and raw foods, it is unlikely that he or she is receiving enough MSM for proper health. Studies have suggested that the level of MSM in the body drops with increasing age. Supplements designed for beauty often contain significant levels of

HEALTHY HAIR AND NAILS Horsetail, thus named due to this herb’s bristly appearance, is rich in silica, an important mineral which strengthens connective tissue, skin, teeth, ligaments, bones, hair and fingernails. This traditional herb has been used since Greek and Roman times for skin inflammation, ulcers and wounds. 11

Prescription For Ultimate Beauty Start with a cleanse. Supplement daily with a good hair, skin and nail formula to include MSM, OPCs, silica and iron, add Hyaluronic Acid. Adjust your diet to include some of the ingredients in these beautyboosting recipes from nutritionist and medicinal chef, Dale Pinnock.

Tomato and Fennel Soup 2 tbs extra-virgin olive oil 1 large red onion - finely chopped 2 cloves of garlic - finely chopped 1 small fennel bulb - finely chopped 1 tsp crushed fennel seed 2 tins chopped tomatoes Vegetable stock 3 tbs orange juice 1/2 tsp apple cider vinegar Freshly ground black pepper

2 ripe avocados 1 clove of garlic - finely chopped 1 fresh red chilli - finely chopped 5 cherry tomatoes - diced Juice of half a fresh lime 3 tbs of Viridian Ultimate Beauty Oil

Method

Halve the avocados and scoop the flesh into a food processor. Add the chopped garlic, chopped chilli, lime juice, and oil. Blend all ingredients together to form a smooth puree. Season to taste with a little sea salt and transfer into a dish. At this stage, add the diced cherry tomatoes, and it is ready to serve.

Benefits

Method

Add the olive oil, chopped onion, chopped garlic, and chopped fennel, along with a generous pinch of sea salt to a saucepan, and saute until the onion and fennel have softened. Add the fennel seeds, tomatoes and orange juice. Then add enough stock to just cover. Simmer for 10 minutes. Use a hand blender to blend into a smooth vibrant soup.

Benefits

Gorgeous Guacamole

Onions and Garlic, like all members of the allium family, are very rich in sulphur, which is vital for the structure of the skin. Sulphur is a key constituent in the ‘extracellular matrix’, the net like structure that, along with collagen, gives the skin sturdiness. Fennel is well known as a digestive aid, but of interest here is its activity as a diuretic. It has the ability to increase urinary output, thus aiding the kidneys in the removal of water soluble waste products. Keeping the body clean from within is a top priority in the quest for clear, glowing skin.

Avocados are one of the greatest gifts that nature has given us. They are packed with skin-healthy fats, such as oleic acid, which is great for both the skin and the heart. They are also a very rich source of vitamin E, one of the most important antioxidants for skin health. The other great benefit here is that avocado will also increase the absorption of the carotenoids from the tomatoes, as they are fat soluble nutrients. Garlic is a wonderful source of organic sulphur. This is one of the single most important nutrients for maintaining the structure of the skin. The skins cells are held in place by a criss-cross lattice, called the extra cellular matrix. This structure is made out of a combination of collagen fibres and sulphur, and requires a consistent intake of high quality sulphur in order to maintain its structure. Garlic is also a great source of glutathione, which increases the body’s production of its own natural detoxifying enzyme, glutathione peroxidase. Limes, like all citrus, are a great natural source of vitamin C. Vitamin C, aside from being a powerful antioxidant, is a key component in the formation of collagen - the protein portion of the extra cellular matrix. Tomatoes contain a powerful carotenoid compound called lycopene. Whilst much of the information regarding lycopene focuses on the importance to men’s health, it is in fact a very powerful broad spectrum antioxidant. There is strong evidence to suggest that there is a link between high consumption of carotenoids and healthy skin ageing.

Red lips and a thin black eyeliner never seem to go out of fashion – with Mad Men and The Hour firmly bringing it back to the forefront of fashion we talk you through how best to achieve ‘the look’. Your base is the most important thing when it comes to make-up – if you get that wrong nothing will look right going forward, dust some Sappho powder foundation over the cheeks and T.Zone with their Kabuki blush brush to really lift the face and give it a matt finish.

Dip your Angle brush into water and then roll it into Sappho’s Midnight Escapade eye shadow, slick it over the eyelid along the lash line and out slightly at the end. Prep lips for bold colour application, a soft wet toothbrush run over your lips should rid you of any dry skin and unevenness. We used Bellapierre lipstick in Ruby to create this look.

BEAUTY COMES FROM WITHIN

S

ome say that ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder’, but what constitutes beauty to some may not to others. A good personality and a glossy head of hair are sometimes all it takes to be perceived as very beautiful. But in truth, attractiveness and good looks are a personal matter and as any fine-looking women will tell you, lots of thought, money, time, and of course anxiety can go into making one look beautiful for those special moments. Of late though, there is a considerable shift to a more ‘natural’ look, with greater emphasis on looking younger. That said, it was good to see just recently some distinguished women happy to be photographed with no face makeup at all and accepting the ageing process with more grace than previously seen. As it relates to skin care products, they have come a long way over the years. Research has shown that actually there is a lot of goodness and anti-aging properties in natural plant products such as Aloe Vera, Argan oil and Olive oil, and today most skin care products will be extracted from these plants and of course the sea.

But should we be so reliant on skin care products to stay beautiful and youthful and glowing? Well, there is definitely a place for an excellent moisturiser in the bathroom cabinet once we reach a certain age, but unfortunately because there is an abundance of cosmetic support within the beauty industry we tend to overlook the fact that actually, beauty comes from within and the old adage ‘we are what we eat’, says it all. Food is of course our fuel for life energy and good health, and eating a correct balance of foods will also feed our skin all the vital nutrients through internal digestion to keep it looking young, healthy and glowing. There are specific types of foods that help us achieve naturally beautiful skin and are crucial in keeping the signs of aging at bay, but in equal measure there are unhealthy behavioural habits that will be detrimental to healthy skin. Sleep for example, is vital. Seven hours of ‘beauty sleep’ is the least we need to prevent looking tired which automatically ages us. Alcohol, drugs, smoking and excessive sunbathing are all really harmful for the skin.

By Yvonne Wake

As it relates to nutritional intake, all foods that are rich in vitamin C such as blackcurrants, blueberries, kiwi, oranges, strawberries, green leafy vegetables and broccoli, all feed and nurture the skin. These foods aid in the production of collagen that strengthens the skin capillaries.

Iron we need Iron to keep skin toned up and this is found in many foods that constitute a varied balanced diet, so just add a small handful of dried apricots & sesame seeds (which contain iron) to your daily intake to improve skin tone.

Zinc which is found in foods like liver

(calves liver is best), pumpkin seeds, lentils, brown rice, oats, almonds, sardines and wheatgerm is also a remedy for skin damage.

Vitamin B2 (in fact all the B vitamins are crucial for good skin), gives your skin a healthy glow. Again liver is a good source, but cheese and eggs as well as Marmite are also excellent. Essential Fatty Acids (Omega -3 and -6) are found in oily fish such as sardines, mackerel, salmon as well as plant sources like linseed and flax oil, avocado, nuts, - all excellent for skin texture and helping to prevent dry skin.

Vitamin A which is found in liver (calves liver is best), eggs, carrots, spinach, yellow peppers, oily fish (sardines & mackerel), milk and cereals that are fortified with zinc, all contribute to helping new skin to grow.

Vitamin E, found in avocado pears, hazelnuts, pine nuts and almonds, is essential for keeping our skin healthy and young. The magic is in the antioxidant activity which is crucial for protecting skin cells from the ultra violet rays and pollutants that damage our skin every day. We cannot underestimate the amount of damage from free radicals encountered everyday. In fact most skin care products will contain vitamin E. 21

Water

It goes without saying that drinking plenty of water is absolutely fundamental to rehydrate our skin. Teas, coffee and juices do not count in the recommended eight glasses a day.

Finally, it is recommended that these essential vitamins and minerals come in their natural form, so we are talking actual food!

Active Age Defense At last, a cream (and range) that I am happy to stick to. As someone who has previously worked in beauty therapy, I am a big fan of lotions and potions which meant lots of bottles and jars in the bathroom! I am so impressed with the Active Age defence range that I have been using it consistently and I am confident that I am doing the best for my skin. I love the fact that it contains HA (Hyaluronan) as I know from my training how important it is to keep the skin supple and well moisturised, regardless of skin type. I wouldn’t be without the skin serum as I feel that it is the best way that I can treat my skin, as the HA that it contains, can hold up to 1000 times its own weight in water so I know that my skin will not become dehydrated. The day cream is so easy to use and the betaginseng complex protects my skin from premature ageing. I really wouldn’t want to be without it and would happily recommend it as my skin has never felt so soft and smooth. Yolande Rankin, Derby

They all feature uniquely New Zealand bioactive ingredients such as manuka honey and extracts from totara, mamaku and kowhai in a base of premium organic avocado oil. One product – a night cream which features powerful antioxidant Vinanza Grape from Marlborough grape seeds – has been dubbed ‘the dream cream’ by beauty media, because it has been scientifically shown to stimulate synthesis of Type 1 collagen production in human fibroblast skin cells by up to an impressive 92 percent.

The understanding of anatomy and physiology this gave her, coupled with her subsequent study of naturopathy, has been a vital element in her development of Antipodes genuinely green and anti-ageing skincare formulations. Awards for the range since its launch include the Sunday Star-Times Beauty Product of the Year Award 2007 and 2009. Green Beauty Bible Winner 2009 and Paris Beyond Beauty Finalist 2008.

Elizabeth places strong emphasis on independent verification from third parties in all aspects of the business: Antipodes has official approval for vegetarians from the Vegetarian Society of the United Kingdom; products are dermatological tested for sensitive skin; and many are certified organic by AsureQuality Ltd, which upholds the strictest worldwide organic standards as set by IFOAM. Antipodes is also certified by internationally-accredited greenhouse gas certification programme carboNZero, testifying to the company’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions as part of its sustainability ethos. The company invests heavily in R&D; Antipodes has recently been awarded a significant science and 27

THE LAST Word Commandments for the Winter Season

1

You should moisturise every single day, but even more so during the winter – being cocooned in by clothes, heating and a change in season will make your skin even more susceptible to drying & premature ageing.

If you are going to indulge in a little spirited tipple make sure you take a Milk Thistle or two before bed to allow your liver to rejuvenate itself properly.

3

A weekly or bi-weekly face mask will keep your skin looking summer fresh during even the darkest winter days.

4

Make-up is IN this A/W2011 – bold lips in any colour are sure to make an impact but if eye colour is more your thing a strong blue, purple or even pink is just as good a statement (make sure you apply it properly, eyeshadow can be tricky).

digestion. Used by celebrities and supermodels alike it is definitely a worthwhile purchase.

6

Body brushing – just because you’re covered up doesn’t mean this daily necessity should take a backseat. Your body deserves it!

7

Keep hand moisturiser with you AT ALL TIMES – your hands age so quickly, and whilst we take care of our face, our hands are often forgotten about.

Take an anti-ageing supplement like Hyaluronic Acid & thank us later.

Apply a deep conditioning treatment to your hair at least once a month, it will keep it shiny and protected.

10

Most importantly - enjoy yourself!

Coconut Oil has a wide variety of benefits – from hair & skin, to immunity &
