Enjoying the early days Coming home with baby is an exciting time. This gorgeous, beautiful, precious bundle; whose love for you is endless and whose little fingers and toes are so small and cute is now going to be in your care; completely in your care… Now what? The nervousness, apprehension, fear, worry and uncertainty begin almost immediately when you leave the hospital. Is your baby strapped into the seat correctly, is the seat secured properly – why are these people driving so fast? The hospital offers a security blanket, the opportunity to ask “is this correct?” “Why is she still crying? I’ve tried…” and to simply be told that you are doing the right thing or to understand what the issue is and how to fix it. When you get home you no longer have that blanket and it can be easy to feel overwhelmed, to feel emotional, tired and so many other things. It can be hard to simply enjoy the time with your baby, so here are my tips on what you can do to enjoy the first few months. 1. Just enjoy and love your baby. Babies grow up so quickly and it is easy to feel overwhelmed, to be tired and to worry about the housework. These stresses only make you feel more stressed. What you need to do is to love your baby and enjoy your time with them while they are a baby. Hug them, cuddle them and just sit with them when you can. Housework will need to be done forever… your baby only needs you to be there for it 24/7 for the first few years – embrace that. 2. Accept Help. Unless you are Wonder Woman you are going to suffer from sleep deprivation and the craziness that accompanies that. Try to understand that and get any amount of sleep when you can. When baby sleeps – go to sleep. If your hubby is home or a close friend or family member comes over, ask if they can watch the baby while you go for a sleep or get you a cup of tea or lunch while you feed. 3. Get prepared. Feeding the baby is so time consuming at the beginning. Learning to understand their feeding cycles (or lack of) and get a glass of water, keep your phone or a book in your feeding spot so that you have what you want when you need it. 4. Go online. Grocery Shopping and making meals can be all too much for any mum with a newborn. Look at purchasing groceries online or at getting healthy meals delivered for the first few weeks. 5. Get out and about. It can be easy to feel overwhelmed yet nothing will make you feel more normal (or proud) then getting out of the house; even if it is only to the local shopping centre to window shop or show off your baby. Go get a coffee… walk around or meet a friend. Just getting out of the house will reduce the feeling of being trapped and increase the feeling of normality. If you are worried about how you will go, start with short outings until you feel more comfortable going for a longer period. See our Nappy bag checklist of items to keep in the bag and keep it packed so that you can go when you want to go out it takes minimal effort. 6. Call for help. Call your mum, a relative or a close friend who has children to ask for their thoughts or opinions. There are a number of phone lines that offer assistance for mums with their feeding, sleeping or illness questions. Don’t be shy – keep their numbers handy and call them when you need advice or reassurance. Remember that this is your baby and your instincts are generally right. No one is perfect and everyone needs help from time to time. Although I found it hard at the time, my fondest memory of my first born is sitting and rocking and cuddling in the chair for hours on end. I wasn’t able to do that with my other two children and I will never have the time to do that again so I cherish it now. Tell us your tips here. MumsDelivery - Solutions for Busy Mums

The Working Mum & Expressing Milk Going back to work after maternity leave can be hard, especially as it is often the first time that a mother may find herself separated from her baby for long periods of time. Continuing to breastfeed is a way of maintaining the close relationship that a mother has developed with her baby. We spoke to Jane Barry who is a Registered Nurse, Midwife and Child Health Nurse as well as Philips AVENT’s baby feeding and well being adviser and creator of mybabybaby.com.au to give you some reliable tips on exressing milk at work. Tips for Expressing The truth is that some women find expressing to be easy and others just don’t. The mechanics of expressing, being organised, managing the pump, bottles and storage of breast milk all impact on how each individual mother perceives the whole experience. The number one factor which influences the success of breast milk expression is a mother’s attitude. Feeling confident and believing that expressing her breast milk and feeding this to her baby is the best thing she can do will impact on her success. This is the case no matter what volume of milk she obtains. But I’m Not Making Enough Milk! Breast milk expression is about the process itself as much as the volume expressed. Even in cases where it is necessary to supplement the baby’s expressed breast milk (EBM) feeds with formula, the fact that their baby is getting “some” breast milk is enough for many mums to keep expressing. Returning to work and expressing can often influence milk supply, at least in the early weeks. But with regular expression and building confidence, a mother’s supply will generally increase to the level it was. This is helped by continuing to breastfeed when able and regularly expressing when either at work or home. Great Tips to Help with Expressing Success • Some women find that if they hand express first and then use the pump, their flow of milk is better. The Philips AVENT Comfort Electric Breast Pump allows you to sit more comfortably with no need to lean forward and has a soft massage cushion to express your milk gently • Consciously try to relax, using whatever method suits you. Try some deep breathing, listening to music (headphones may be useful if you are at work), having a warm drink or something to eat • Aim to express in a quiet, warm, relaxing area, away from distractions • Have an insulated bag with you when expressing so you can place the bottle of EBM in it straightaway before storing in the fridge. This means your bottles of EBM aren’t on show for all to see • Be organised. When you sit down to express have the sterilised pump all set up and ready to go. Interrupting expression sessions can impact on the “let-down” response and the flow of milk. Have a drink of cold water/tea/coffee and if you have a toddler, organise them with food, drinks and toys. Once your baby starts drinking from a cup, your mission is clear - find a cup that doesn't leak. This is trickier than it sounds, so we have been testing cups and rating them to give you our feedback on how they work. When drinking from the SMASH water bottles the water flows freely and is a great sports drink and everyday water cup for an established cup drinker. The Discovera Active Tipper uses a patented SAMTECH value to give it non spill ability while enabling easy drinking.
Tupperware Flow Control Tumbler The Tupperware Flow Control Tumber has a raised spout made of hard plastic with a one-way valve to stop accidental spills. The Flow Control Tumbler comes with handles that are removable and easy to grip. It also comes with a hygienic cover for when out and about with baby and has a 250ml capacity. Pura Kiki The Pura Kiki is a unique concept in babies drinking bottles and cups. Made from anti-bacterial, stainless steel the bottle grows and evolves with your baby. Suitable from 3 months plus the Pura Kiki bottle comes with a medium flow teat. As your baby then grows you can change the baby bottle teat to a toddler spout which doesn't leak if left on its side, or tipped upside down.

Returning to Work after Baby Practical Tips For A Smooth Transition Leaving the bubble of maternity leave to re-enter the workforce can be an exciting and overwhelming time filled with a host of mixed emotions. Gearing Up For the First Day In the weeks leading up to D-day, consider visiting work for a lunch catch up to get back into the swing of things. Start tuning back into work related news so you can commence switching your brain back into gear. Trial your childcare arrangements so bubs and you get used to the idea. This can be a biggy for many women, so do whatever you need to gain comfort with your arrangements. Be thorough – never assume your carer knows anything specific to your childs routine. Spend some time reviewing your wardrobe. Dust off the workwear and remember your body has changed (and maybe the fashion!), so hit the shops to stock up if required. Doing this on the morning of your first day back can lead to disaster. Don’t Be Afraid To Outsource There’s no doubt you could do it all, but to avoid burnout and keep a happy balance at home, don’t hesitate to outsource what you can (without guilt!). Cleaning, ironing, some cooking can all be outsourced to reduce your overall load. Online grocery shopping is a gem NOT to be overlooked! Take a look at the MumsDelivery Directory to find a range of businesses offering home delivery or in-area services. Leaving The House On Time Do all of your prep work the night before. Lay yours and bubs clothes out, pack both of your bags, and make your lunch. Sleep is precious and mornings fly, so you need to be as efficient as possible and out the door on time. Food Glorious Food Great nutrition is essential to see you surviving your new routine, so never skip brecky and have some simple lunch options available. Keep some breakfast supplies at work if appropriate, master the art of the precooked chicken salad, or find a trusty café that provides healthy fast tucker. If you’ve not been a meal planner before, consider giving it a go. Having a 5 day meal plan with groceries delivered on a Monday night is a great way to set up a healthy working week. Be Prepared For A Readjustment Period It can be normal to resent being at work initially. How can whatever you are working on be more important than your beautiful bub? Guilt can easily creep in for either leaving your child, or for (gasp) loving being back at work and in the adult world. Refocusing on work can take time. Some workplaces and industries move fast and you may feel out of touch with new strategies and techniques. Ask your manager to give you a good ‘reintroduction’ session, or handover from whoever was your replacement, so that you are brought up to MumsDelivery - Solutions for Busy Mums

speed. It’s very common for women to lose total confidence after having been away – so be patient with yourself, and gain confidence from the fact that you not only have all of your prior skills and experience, but you also now have an entirely new set of skills that can assist you with efficiency, resourcefulness and patience! Reassert Yourself People have gotten used to working without you and there may be new people at work. Don’t be offended if they are going to other people now for answers. They need to readjust to you being back. Take time to meet with everyone, or at least say a quick hello, so that people know you are back on deck and ready to work. Your career objectives may have changed. If you now want less responsibility at work, manage your workload accordingly and don’t be afraid to say no to additional requests that might impact your family life. Conversely, if you are driven to advance, make this known with appropriate words and actions. Regardless of your personal career objectives, always work hard and with integrity. Find Time To Surrender You will amaze yourself with newfound efficiency that allows you to leave work on time to return to your bub. However once home, your work day doesn’t end. You likely have another few hours on duty, then are ‘on call’ all night. ‘Downtime’ can be hard to come by. Find acts of surrender that enable you to recharge; exercise, meditation, date night, reading a book or having a long hot bath. Neglecting your personal health and wellbeing needs will catch up with you. Schedule things in and ask for support so that you can be cared for too. Article from Fiona Trewhitt. Advantages of Meat Delivery I love getting meat delivered to my door and think that utilising a meat delivery service has a number of advantages for busy families: • You get Good quality produce at a reasonable cost. Online butchers and meat delivery • services get their produce direct from the farms and then package it to send to their customers. Most meat delivery services offer good quality, hormone free meat that tastes nice and doesn’t cost a fortune. • Save Time! No more having to run back and forth to the shops and you can buy as much or as little as you like as frequently or infrequently as you need. With 3 young children I like avoiding the shops whenever possible, so I place a big order and store it all in the freezer, ready to be defrosted for meals as required. Placing a big order also means that you save on delivery fees. • Greater Variety. Often online butchers can provide a greater variety of products than your local butcher or supermarket. This is great when trying to find particular meats that are not everyday items. • Less Effort. There is no need to drive, queue or go out of your way after a long day at work. 5 -10 minutes on the computer and your order can be placed. Each order after your first is easier as you already have a profile and know what they offer and what you want. • Meal planning. For families who like to plan their meals for the week, you could order the meat to accommodate this on a weekly/fortnightly basis. Find your local meat delivery services here.
