When MumsDelivery started back in 2009 I never thought it would grow to become such a comprehensive website and that I in turn would become an editor of a Magazine. While the journey of being a working mum and running my own business has not been easy I love what I do. I love what I have created and most of all I love the bonds and connections this website and magazine gives me to other mums in their journey through Motherhood. Returning to the workforce after a “family break” can be extremely exciting. But it can also be fraught with fear, anticipation and particularly guilt. Nowadays it is quite rare that a woman will be a full-time stay-at-home mum. Although this may be the ideal scenario for many, particularly first-time mothers, other factors may come into play. Finances are certainly a big one. But also, many women may have a flourishing career or business pre-children, and this forms a big part of their lives and their own identity and they are sometimes reluctant to completely give this up. But re-entering the workforce or reigniting a dormant business is a big step when there is the added factor of children to consider. So how can women make this work without the guilt and enable a smooth transition from full-time mum into working mum or even mumpreneur? Some of the problems and fears mums have when planning the return to the workforce include: 1. Not spending enough time with the kids. To go from spending virtually every waking moment with your child to then leaving them for hours at time in the care of someone else who is not you, can make you feel quite guilty. You are no longer the primary carer for certain times of the day. But if you can turn your thinking around, this can really be quite a positive time. Crèche or day care can be a source of great fun and stimulation to an active child. They will often enjoy the interaction with other children, the new activities and toys they have to play with, and it enables them to become quite socially adept. And the stringent rules and regulations within the child-care industry that must be adhered to should be very reassuring for a firsttime user. Grandparents are also a great source of child-care if the situation suits. And many grandparents will relish the opportunity to spend quality time with their grandchildren and are able to build a very special bond with them.

2. Overwhelm Many mums feel that they already have too much to do, simply running their household and day-today life, and can’t fathom how they could possibly add a formal “job” into the mix. This is where organisation, preparation, schedules and systems really come into play. Implementing things like menu-planning, scheduling blocks of time to do tasks like admin and cleaning, rather than trying to slot it in at random times will make your life much more efficient and reduce that feeling of being out of control. 3. Losing touch with the kids Spending hours away from them may make you feel disconnected with your family. To combat this you can set aside time after work or on weekends or non-working days where you have “special” things you do together. Like going out to the park or for ice-cream. Also, the evenings with the bath time routine, and bedtime stories are a great time to re-connect with your kids after a busy day at work. They don’t need to spend every waking moment with you. Believe me, both of you will benefit from a break from each other! And you will appreciate them so much more, when you spend quality time together rather than large chunks of unfocused time.

the Mummy Guilt 4. You won’t be able to cope. This is where you need to get your family on board. Sit down your partner and children, depending on their age. Tell them about what you are planning and the reasons behind your re-entry to the workforce. Explain how it will benefit you all, and tell them what you need help with. Washing, tidying up toys, cooking, and importantly cooperation and helping out. 5. Ask for and accept all offers of help Don’t try and be a superwoman. There are no awards for that, only stress and friction. Instead, ask for help with picking up kids from after-school activities. Pal up with some of the other mums and car-pool. Take turns. Swap baby-sitting. If necessary hire a cleaner if it is all getting too much. And lower your standards if this is not yet a viable option. Do you really need to clean the oven or shower every week? Who will really notice? So, by just tweaking things a bit, asking for help, being productive in bursts, and being truly present when you are with your family, you can feel confident about re-entering the workforce as a mum, and can treat it as a new adventure that will help to expand your horizons without totally overwhelming you. Feeding Baby after Work
When it comes time to weaning your baby the whole process can be quite daunting. Throw in the fact of having to go back to work at the same time and it suddenly feels like someone has asked you to compete in a 20km uphill endurance run. Not very appealing. A few tricks to help keep you on top of the weaning process can be all it takes to help maintain the stress levels. 1. There is nothing worse then walking in the door with a screaming baby on your hip and you still have no idea what you’re planning to cook for your hungry baby. Save yourself the stress and set 30 minutes aside each week to write a menu for your baby. Planning your babies’ meals allows you to put thought into the food you are feeding your baby. Your baby needs variety and nutrition and sitting down to map out their meals is a good way to ensure they get both. 2. Have a few cookbooks on hand. Going back to work means our brains are now juggling work related matters with baby related matters and often when it comes to mealtime we can get stuck for ideas. The Baby Led Weaning Cookbook provides a great range of meals for baby and toddler that the whole family can enjoy. If you don’t want to spend any money on cookbooks take a trip to your local library and see what they have available. That way you can write down the ones that work for you and start your own little collection of recipes. 3. Have back ups! Put aside a few hours on the weekend to cook a few meals for your baby and double the quantity. Freeze small portions that are ready to go for those days where you are caught of guard, which, lets face it, is bound to happen. 4. Fritters and savoury muffins are great

on the go meals for your baby. Again, you can make these on the weekend and keep a stock in the freezer ready to go. 5. From the moment my daughters started on solids I have involved them in the cooking process. I talk to them about the ingredients we are cooking with and they love it. It may seem unrealistic to involve a 6 month old in cooking, but children who are involved in the cooking process are generally more likely to eat the foods. My eldest daughter is 3 ½ and she can name most of the ingredients in our kitchen, and crack an egg all on her own. Remember the early days of weaning are laying the foundations for what type of eater your want your child to be. 6. Write your baby’s schedule down and have a few copies available. That way if you ever have to step out in a rush you know that it’s all there ready for someone else to follow. 7. Just because your child doesn’t eat a food the first time doesn’t mean they don’t like it. Just like us, their tastes can change and something they don’t feel like one day they can devour the next day. Research has shown that it can take a child up to 10 times of trying a new food before they actually like it. So be persistent. 8. We all know breakfast is the most

Baby important meal of the day and if you know that is the only meal that you are going to have with your baby then try waking up 10 minutes earlier to enjoy the time with them before you go to work. It is a good way to start the day for you and your baby. 9. Equipment is important but there is no need to get carried away. If you are doing purees all you really need is a bib, spoon and a bowl. Baby led weaning is famously messy, but if you are happy to clean up the mess than I wouldn’t even recommend a mess mat. Buy a bulk pack of cheap washers or old-school cloth nappies and put them aside to clean the table and floor after your baby has finished eating. Soak, wash, reuse. I find cleaning the floor is much quicker and easier than washing off a mess mat. 10. As hectic as it can be juggling parenting life and work life, ensure meals are not rushed. It can be easy to view mealtime as another chore to tick off for the day, but try not to get caught in that trap. Sit with your baby, talk to them, tell them what foods they are eating. Mealtime with your baby can become one of the best quality moments of your day. 11. Don’t stress. There will be days where cooking just seems so unappealing. I have been there. Scrambled eggs with baked beans for dinner is OK sometimes, and is much better for your baby than any fast food options. Home Organisation: Wardrobe Organising your wardrobe can be hard to do when life is busy and as we are limited for time throughout the day, and to actually have the time of going through and sorting through your bedroom wardrobes that has clothing or shoes can be daunting but it is imperative to get structure in the bedroom closets. Here are some basic tips to keep on track of organising your wardrobe. 1. Sorting through your clothes. First you must decide what clothes are going to be relevant to you and ones that you wear on a regular basis. We all buy new clothes and push the old clothes to the back which creates limited space. Therefore by organising and sorting through your wardrobes and cupboards on a regular basis this allows for organisation in the wardrobe and decluttering. You will need to sort through your wardrobe on a regular basis as trends change and your shape can change. So if you are going through your wardrobe and come across outfits that you haven’t worn for a long time - its time to donate or throw these items out.

One Busy Entrepreneur’s Organisation and Storage Tips For Busy Mums.. When it comes to organisation, business entrepreneur and mum-of-two Jordana Thirlwall is an expert. Not only because she manages an international storage company Supercheap Storage (hand when it comes to organization!) with her husband Edward while raising their two small children. She runs her own other “side business” and the family is also undergoing an extensive house renovation meaning Jordana’s daily schedule can be somewhat chaotic. To help other Aussie mums tackle their daily priorities with organised ease and help keep their sanity in check, Jordana has unveiled her top expert organisation tips that she uses in both her professional and personal routines. 1. Don’t just use one calendar, use three! It may seem obvious, but a well-planned calendar can help save time, stress, anxiety and confusion. Jordana has three separate calendars, one for her family, one for her businesses and one that combines both schedules. This helps Jordana track and manage her priorities, whilst ensuring no tasks conflict with each other. 2. Keep sheet sets together using pillow cases Need a set of fresh sheets? 4. Spread out cleaning supplies Due to her schedule, it’s often challenging for Jordana to spend 3 + hours cleaning every week. Instead, she spreads out her cleaning supplies (and often busy double) around the house, of course making sure little fingers can’t reach them. That way, she can clean as she goes and when mess occurs, rather than waiting for one chance to do it on the weekend. 5. Re-think the way you view storage Jordana is a firm believer that storage doesn’t have to be expensive. In fact, many of her storage techniques are extremely cost effective. For example, she separates cords using empty toilet papers rolls, zip lock bags for hair ties, bobby pins, etc. and shoe racks for cleaning and bathroom products. These simple and effective storage ideas means she’s keeping everything she needs in the one place, without breaking the bank. Above all, Jordana says her biggest organisation tip is to take time out. It may sound crazy, but by taking time out to herself every once in a while, when it comes to managing hectic schedules, she can tackle them with ease and a clear head. Pantry Storage Tips Not enough space? Sick and tired of having to reorganise the pantry time and time again to find a specific ingredient. With a few pantry organisation tips you can make the most of your pantry storage. The tips will help you make the most of your pantry space. Read our organising your Pantry article to efficiently organise your pantry. 1. Use Containers. Boxes and packaging can be bulky and take up unnecessary space. Containers are generally easy to stack and you can get different sizes to suit your requirements. Containers offer the additional benefit of helping to preserve the quality of the food keeping it fresher and making it last longer. Not only is this good for the quality of the food that you eat but also for your budget as you are getting the most out of your ingredients. For items like cereal, containers also make it easier to access and pour.
2. Label it. When organising your pantry it is ideal to label what is in the individual containers so you can quickly identify the ingredients you are after. I used a labelling machine and placed the label on more than one side as I knew hubby wouldn’t check whether the label was visible when putting the items back. You can also cut out the original packaging label and put it within the container.
3. Clean empty 2L Ice cream containers are ideal to put all the spice mix packets, containers lids or other smaller thin items into. For packet mixes or spices you could also use a labelled concertina file.
4. Raised Storage. For cans and jars, using an expandable flat shelf you can double your space by having cans below and then on the shelf.
5. Wall mounted racks. Make use of all your space by drilling these into the pantry doors to hold your spices or little bits and pieces. You can also add another one near your oven for your herbs and spices. 6. Stack it. Stack all unused pots, pans or containers into each other to save on the space required. 7. Heavy appliances. These can often present an issue as they are used irregularly yet are hard and heavy to manoeuvre. Place these items on the lower stronger shelves so you are less likely to break the shelf and put the appliance

on a tray which can then be used to slide the item closer to you making it easier for you to grab and lift. 8. For all appliances. Where possible store the appliance parts (plug, spoons, cutting settings etc) together; inside the appliance is ideal if possible. This will reduce the time it takes you to find the pieces and also stop items from getting lost. 9. Keeping it clean. when you can. Set up systems that help you become more organised and enlist the help of your children – allow them to be accountable for things. Create things to do lists where you can tick items off each day, with a sense of achievement.
In our busy lives as mothers we often get caught up in our ‘never-ending’ to do list rather than enjoying life with our children. This is something I have struggled with to maintain that balance of getting everything done and yet still being present with my children! I would often push myself to the limits to be that ‘perfect’ mother and as a result I would become a ‘screaming stressed out mess’ mother, with my children and husband bearing the brunt of my frustrations. I was unhappy and constantly felt on edge as I rushed between everything that I needed to do. Yet what was I achieving? Clean floors or ironed clothes and becoming a mother who was overwhelmed with life and cranky all the time? “I could not live this way anymore, and you do not need to either!” I have now chosen to move away from this mayhem life and into a more peaceful and calmer life. Yet it is not as simple as that, let me tell you as life still does continue to get in the way (which is okay as ultimately life is full of ebbs and flows).
2. Quality time with your children – create ‘magic’ moments with your children. It does not need to be long periods of time, yet small snippets of fun times with your children. You can do this in the car as we taxi our children around, at the dinner table, helping with the cooking etc. Undivided attention is all it takes, as it is in these moments that memories are created for you and your children. 3. Effective communication – talk to your children about what you expect from them and how you require it done. Role model to them the behaviour you want to see in them – don’t scream back in a fight as this is only teaching them how to scream more. Lower your voice and wait until the anger subsides before you bring in your teaching / consequence. 4. Start to look at the underlying causes of why you feel out of control / stressed – often what we are stressing about has nothing to do with what is going on around us at that moment. It could be an underlying issue like for me it was feeling like ‘I was not a good enough mother’. Once you can see what the root cause of the problem is, you can then take the steps to rectify this problem from the inside out!
5. Taking time out to appreciate all Here are my 6 crucial steps to getting in control of that you do – we do so much as mothers your life which I live my life by and also teach in for everyone around us, yet we forget to my workshops and webinars: acknowledge this as we quickly move onto the next job to be done. recognising our achievements (big or small) and also being compassionate to ourselves when life does not go exactly as we had imagined. 6. Learn to say NO! – We are not an endless pit of energy, we need to have balance in our lives – including downtime. Saying NO is a big thing as we don’t want to inconvenience or not help others around us. Yet in the process of taking on too much we let ourselves down. Learn to say NO to things that you can and focus on what is important your family.

The easiest way to remain healthy amidst a busy lifestyle is to ensure you always have a healthy choice available, whether it be at home or on the go! Effective weekly meal planning can help to make the week easier and healthier for both mums and their little ones. Here are 5 essential steps to take when beginning meal planning for the week.
1.) Get Out Your Pen and Paper Meal planning will not be effective without a concrete plan. Get out a calendar and decide what meals will be eaten on which day, every day of the week, for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Sweet Chilli Noodle Salad (GF) Ingredients Chang’s Sesame Oil ½ packet Bean sprouts 200g snow peas, trimmed, halved Red Capsicum, sliced finely 1 packet Chang’s Gluten Free Wok-Ready Noodles Dressing 1/2 cup sweet chilli sauce 2 limes, juiced 2 tablespoons Chang’s Sesame oil (works well with Chang’s Peanut Oil as well) Method: Warm variety: Add 1 tbls Chang’s Sesame Oil, bean sprouts, snow peas, capsicum and Chang’s Gluten Free Wok-Ready Noodles to wok. Stir fry for 2-3 minutes or until tender. Add dressing and serve. Cold Variety: Add all ingredients to your salad bowl. Prepare CChang’s Gluten Free Wok-Ready Noodles in the Microwave and then add to salad. Dress and enjoy.

Hoisin Pork with Noodles (GF) Serves 6 Prep Time: 20 minutes. Cooking time 25 minutes Ingredients 1 x Pork Backstrap Chang’s Hoisin Sauce 2 packets Chang’s Gluten Free Wok-Ready Noodles 2 tbls Chang’s Sesame Oil 1 Onion sliced 2 Zucchinis sliced 2 carrots thinly sliced 200g Snow Peas, trimmed, halved 4 tsp crushed peanuts (optional) Directions 1. Lightly cover Pork Back strap in Chang’s Hoisin Sauce and leave to marinade for 20 minutes or longer if possible. 2. Pre-heat oven to 180 degrees. 3. Place pork in oven for 20 minutes to cook. Then remove and let rest for a further 5 minutes. 4. While pork is cooking, add 1 tbls Chang’s Sesame Oil, onion, zucchini and carrot to wok. Stir fry for 4-5 minutes or until tender 5. Pull apart Chang’s Gluten Free Wok-Ready Noodles adding them, the snow peas and peanuts. Add 1-2tbsp Chang’s Hoisin Sauce and stir fry for a further 2-3 minutes. 6. Serve on platter with sliced pork.
Salt & Pepper Calamari 700g Calamari Rings ½ cup plain flour 2 tsp Salt 2 tsp Pepper Oil to Fry the Calamari Method 1. Put a double layer of paper towel onto a plate and spread calamari on top of this to allow them to dry. 2. Heat oil in large wok or deep pan 3. Add flour, salt and pepper to a large bowl and mix together. 4. Add calamari to the flour mixture and mix around to ensure that all calamari rings are coated well. To make it a fun activity for the kids, place the flour mixture into a strong bag with the calamari and close securely. Let the kids shake the bag about until the calamari is well coated. 5. When the oil is hot, carefully add the calamari rings (in batches) to the oil to cook for 2-3 minutes until golden brown. 6. Remove the calamari from the oil and place on top of a new plate with paper towel to drain oil.
Veggies in Oyster Sauce Ingredients 1 tbls Chang’s Sesame Oil 4 carrots chopped into slices 2 zucchinis chopped into slices 2-3 tbls Chang’s Oyster Sauce Method Heat oil in wok. Add carrots and zucchinis and

cook for 5 minutes. While cooking add a dash of boiling water (2tbs) to the wok just to cover the bottom. This helps stop the veggies burning and also offers a steaming effect. For 5 minutes until soft and tender 2 minutes prior to serving Add 2-3 tablespoons (or to your liking) of Chang’s Oyster Sauce.

Serves: 4 Prep Time: 10 minutes Cooking Time: 15 minutes Ingredients 1 pack McKenzie’s Quick Cook Minestrone Soup (Incl stock sachet) 2 carrots, finely sliced 2 celery sticks, finely sliced 2 potatoes, diced into small pieces 2 small zucchinis, quartered and sliced 1 tbs tomato paste 1 tbs fresh basil, finely chopped 4 rashers bacon (or 6 slices of pancetta), lightly panfried & diced to serve shaved parmesan cheese to taste McKenzie’s Himalayan Pink Salt & Whole Black Pepper Grinder Directions Step 1 Prepare McKenzie’s Quick Cook Country Hearty Minestrone Soup as per pack directions. Add vegetables and tomato paste. Cook covered for 15 minutes. Step 2 Top with bacon or pancetta and shaved parmesan cheese. Garnish with parsley. Season to taste.
Ingredients • 1 tbsp olive oil • 1 onion, chopped • 2 cloves garlic • 6 potatoes, peeled, chopped • 2 bunches broccoli, trimmed into florets • 1 1/2 cups(375ml) salt-reduced chicken stock • 1 cup(120g) frozen peas • 1/2 cup(125ml) milk • ½ cup Parmesan cheese (optional) • 1/3 cup(80g) light sour cream Method 1. Heat oil in a large saucepan on medium. Cook onion and garlic for 3 minutes, until soft. Add potato, stock and 1 cup water. Bring to a simmer and cook for 8 minutes or until potato is soft. 2. Add broccoli and peas and cook for 5 minutes, until broccoli is tender. Using a stick blender blend soup until smooth. 3. Stir in milk and Parmesan and season to taste. 4. When ready to serve add the sour cream.

Apple & Coconut Crumbles What a great lunchbox snack idea these mini Apple and Coconut Crumbles are. (Serves 10) Ingredients • 5 apples, cored and cut in half • 1-2tbsp butter or coconut oil, melted • 2tsp cinnamon, ground • 1 cup of oats • 1/4 cup shredded coconut • 1tsp vanilla extract • 1/4 cup sultanas • Optional: yoghurt and honey topping Method 1. Preheat oven to 180-200 degrees 2. Mix oats, coconut, cinnamon, sultanas, vanilla extract, butter/coconut oil in a bowl 3. Rub each apple half with 1tsp butter and top with 1-2tbsp topping, press down to secure the topping 4. Place apple halves in a baking dish filled with enough water to touch the sides of each apple half. 5. Bake for 30-40mins until the top is golden 6. Serve with an optional dollop of yoghurt and drizzle of honey
Chicken and Vegetable Risotto (Serves 10) Ingredients 4. • 300-500g chicken breast • Vegetarian: 1-2 cups feta cheese, crumbled 5. • 2 cups of Arborio rice • 1 cups of mushrooms, flat, button and/or brown 6. • 1 carrots, peeled and chopped 7. • 1 zucchinis, chopped • 1 celery sticks, chopped • 1 garlic cloves • 1 onion, skin removed • 2 cups of chicken or vegetable stock salt reduced • 1 bunch parsley, finely chopped • 4tbsp. extra virgin olive oil Method 1. Pre-heat oven to 180 degrees, toss chicken breast with olive oil and bake on a lined baking tray for 15-20minutes until cooked, shred with a fork 2. Rice: in a food processor add the mushrooms, carrot, zucchini, celery, garlic, onion and olive oil and blend until coarsely chopped 3. In a saucepan, sauté the mixture until soft

If you are looking to upgrade your family car, here is the Family Car Buying Checklist you need where we have listed the points to consider when upgrading your family car. Volvo XC60 Review Volvo’s slogan “Parenting made Easy” is a big call. So naturally I was intrigued at how the XC60 would make parenting easier and if it could. The XC60 is a 5 door, 5 seater SUV ideal for families. It is intuitive and has a number of inbuilt technological improvements that are both user friendly and helpful in everyday living. The inbuilt booster seats, reverse camera and keyless entry are standout features I have appreciated throughout the review. Keep reading to see this mum’s review of the Volvo XC60 and what features make it a suitable Family Car. Driving The Volvo is very smooth and responsive to drive. The car has a powerful engine that easily responds to acceleration requests and it has a fantastically tight turning circle. There is so much technology behind and within the car, yet Volvo has been able to keep the user interface simple and uncomplicated. The car and all of its features are very user friendly either through their ergonomic design, simplicity in activating (e.g. cruise control) or the ability to easily change user preferences through the settings on the LCD display.
Inside the car, there is a medium sized LCD display and the dashboard and speedometer are simple and easy to read and can be customised to suit your visual preference. The car follows the European layout design which I find appealing. The Volvo XC60 offers ‘city stop’ the ability of the car to sense cyclists and pedestrians around and prepares your breaks for a sudden stop. While you never wish to use this feature, as a parent it is a handy safety feature that is ideal with children around especially if you are often going to childcare centres or schools where the roads can be crazy.

Parent Friendly Features The inbuilt booster seats have to be the biggest winner for me. Legally complying with Australian standards these booster seats mean that I do not have to have 3 car seats within my car. I only need the one for my toddler and my other children (as they are older than 4 years) can use the inbuilt boosters. The level of the booster seat can be adjusted to over 2 levels to best suit the height of your child. They are quick and easy to adjust making is simple to change the layout of the car should you have more adults or other children joining you on your journey. The inbuilt boosters offer your child the protection they need while your children love the freedom of the raised seat and the sense that they no longer need a ‘baby seat’. The inbuilt booster seats are fantastic for parents as they are a lot easier to clean than booster seats. Keyless entry Another ideal feature for mums is the keyless entry. As long as the car keys are within a close distance to the car (e.g. on you/in your bag) there is a button on each door that can be pressed to unlock the car. I have found this immensely helpful as I carry my sleeping child or when laden with groceries in each hand and a toddler on my hip. Not needing to put your child down to search for keys is very helpful. The car offers Keyless driving as well which is protected from children as you have to place your foot on the brake when pushing the ignition button to start the car.

Boot The Volvo XC60 offers a mum friendly boot. With the push of a button on the remote, the boot will open ready to accept my bags. With another push of a button on the tailgate it will close. The Tailgate can also be adjusted to open to a specific height which is great for families that park on hills or for the vertically challenged. Whether you’re starting a family or it’s getting bigger buying a new car is a major decision for any mum and dad. The number one question for any parent is safety closely followed by family friendliness. Whether you’re buying new or used we’ve got the advice to help you choose the right car for your family.
We asked Stephen Moir, CEO of the Motor Trade Association of WA, what parents should look for when purchasing a family car. “There are a few questions you need to ask yourself to determine what type of car you need” said Mr Moir. “First of, how many kids and pets do you intend to have? Your family car is a big investment and most people hang on to them for many years. Your car needs to comfortably fit all of the family so it’s worthwhile to think about your future plans when considering upgrading for the family.” “While your days of driving a coupe have gone, if you’re planning for two kids, there’s still plenty of options including sedans, hatches, SUV’s, or 4WD’s. If you’re really ambitious and choose to have more than two kids you’re really entering into people mover territory.” “It’s also important to consider how close together you’re intending to have your children, it affects the size, number and type of child seats you’ll need to fit; Children up to the age of 7 or until they’re taller than 145 cm must use an approved child safety seat. Plus don’t forget, once you’ve got the pram and baby stuff in the boot you also need to be able to fit the grocery shopping” “The next important question is where do you live and where do you go? If you live inner city and have limited parking space, manoeuvrability is a must; plus you’ll want to make sure the car isn’t too wide. You’ll need to be able to open the back doors completely to be able to get your child out of their seat without doing your back in.”

“Once you’ve answered these questions you’ll have narrowed down the type of car that you’re looking for; then it’s time to seriously start looking at vehicle safety” said Mr Moir. “The best way of judging safety is to look at the ANCAP safety ratings. Put simply the higher the ANCAP star rating the higher the likelihood that you and your family will survive an accident. “The other aspect of safety is the vehicle capacity to accommodate child seats” said Mr Moir, “think about ease of fitting a seat, space between each seat, anchor point locations, anchor point compatibility with your child seat and leg room restrictions when a child seat is installed.” “You should always get your child seats fitted by a approved fitter” said Mr Moir, “it will give you peace of mind that the seat is fitted correctly and it will be most effective in protecting your child should you be unfortunate enough to have an accident.” “Once you’ve decided on the type of car that you’re looking for, book a test drive with a reputable, licensed dealer. I’d recommend that you even take your pram and child seats with you so that you can see how well they fit the car. You’ll be taking the pram in and out of the boot hundreds of times over the next few years so a test run can be well worth your while” Mr Moir said. “Also check visibility in your test drive, you want to be sure that you can see toddlers when you’re reversing out of the driveway. How to read a book to your child
It’s a good idea to read the book yourself before reading to your child so that you are familiar with the story and can guide discussion.
1. Look at the front and back covers of the book with your child. Use all the information on the covers to guess what the book will be about. Ask your child questions about what they see. Read them the blurb on the back cover and ask them what they think the story will be about. 2. Look at the pictures inside the book. Ask your child questions about what they see in the pictures, what’s happening, how they think the character is feeling and so on. 3. Read the book to your child. Read with expression. Always read all the words and read them in the same order so that the child knows the story will always be the same. 4. Read the book to your child as many times and as often as your child likes. Children’s books are not meant to be read once only. Reading is a learning process and requires a lot of repetition. 5. You can run your finger under the words as you read them so that the child begins to understand that the writing on the page is what you are reading and that it always stays the same and does not change. 6. You might draw your child’s attention to a particular word and discuss it. 7. Look through the book again together without reading it and talk about what is happening. Ask your child questions about each page. Reading involves memory so encourage your child to retell the story in his/her own words as you go through the book and he/she looks at the pictures to remind him/her of the story sequence. 8. Reading should always be fun – never a chore. So make sure you make the reading experience with your child fun. Be guided by your child. 9. If possible, do some activities related to the book. 10.
