Editors Note
Welcome to the first edition of The Busy Mums Magazine for 2016! This year we have decided to change the direction of the magazine slightly to bring better solutions to busy mums. Our focus will still cover fun and informative parenting issues while putting a much greater focus on our mum’s lifestyle needs. As always we will still have a dedicated section for great food recipes and we will place stronger emphasis on Family travel & activities with a dedicated travel section. Much of this edition was inspired by our trip to Tasmania and the desire to ‘slow down’ and appreciate what we have; including the ability to grow more of our own produce. In addition to this we are incresing on focus on health and beauty as we need to look and feel good to be our best. Above is a recent picture of hubby and I - one of the rare occassions we went out solo and to a special event. It was so much fun having time to dress up and feel great. It is something us mums can too easily put aside, yet some of the little things; like doing our nails, getting a new outfit or taking 5 minutes for us, can rejuvenate our outlook and brighten our mood. So we are finding and celebrating the simple ways mums can have fun, make fun and enjoy themselves. We are always looking for mums to contribute to our magazine or suggest topics they would like to see covered. Please get in touch via the information below and make our day :) Wishing you a happy balanced life! Lorraine

Fun Ideas It is great to get your children outdoors and enjoying their garden or creating a love of growing plants, herbs, veggies or fruit. Make the process fun and get your children more exciting about gardening by creating handmade decorations or tools with your children, made from recyclable materials. Some great ideas include: • Create plant and herb markers from old paddle pop sticks. • Get the kids painting old pot plants with bright and bold colours. • Make fun dangling garden decorations from beads, shells and pebbles, hang these with thread, or fishing line. • Turn coconut shell halves into seedling pots-clean the inside, paint the outside like a face and anything that sprouts will seem like hair. Recycled egg cartons are also great for making seedling pots. • Make plants out of vegetable scraps- while they don’t grow edible produce; they make a fun activity for kids, who can watch them sprout week by week. Gardening Benefits for Kids Anyone who grew up in Australia in the 70s and 80s typically has fond memories of long, hot summers and hours of fun in the backyard running through a sprinkler, under a hose or sliding down a Slip ‘N Slide. A survey we conducted recently discovered that less than 10 per cent of Australian households are engaging in this form of summer fun to cool off. It’s no secret that many families are opting to stay indoors due to the rise of entertainment technology and other factors such as home-comforting air conditioners. Spending time outdoors in the garden has a number of benefits for children and their parents alike. Gardening can help children to learn more about the environment around them and encourages exploration, while their self-esteem and confidence can build when they are trusted to look after a living thing. Plus all that digging, lifting, stretching to reach branches to prune or cut equates to low-impact exercise! Here are my top suggestions for gardening and backyard activities for the kids.
1. Start a family vegetable garden
Each child can select their favourite vegetable, plant it and watch it grow. They can tend to it every day and ensure their vegetable has enough water. Not only will this teach them valuable lessons about how and where food comes from, they’ll also have the opportunity to eat the fruits of their labour!
4. Plant a tree
Planting a tree and nurturing it can instil a sense of purpose and ownership. They’ll grow along with the tree and see how it can change the environment in their backyard by attracting birds and other living creatures.
2. Make your very own snail farm 5. Just be… Cut an opening in the side of an empty, sealed water bottle and lay it down with the opening facing the sky. Place soil, leaves, cucumbers and lettuce inside the bottle and then go on a snail hunt. Collect snails to put inside your bottle and then tape over the opening. Don’t forget to punch small holes in the bottle lid so your snails can breathe.
3. Create a fairy garden
Let their imaginations go wild in creating a magical fairy garden. All sorts of treasures can be used from shells and rocks, to flowers and leaves. Bury a cup to make a pool or use paddle pop sticks to create benches or houses.
5
Encourage children to just be and interact with their outdoor environment. Lying on the fresh grass and watching the clouds float by, making watering the lawn fun by playing with the sprinkler or climbing a tree, will help to create lasting and fond childhood memories and a love of our great outdoors. 10 Tips to get Kids Gardening We are frequently asked “How can I get my kids interested in gardening? And these days with easy access to a range of electronic entertainment devices, it is more important than ever to encourage children to create their own gardens and grow their own food. Here are our top ten tips to encourage kids gardening. 1 Have Fun Without doubt the most important tip of all! As a child when I visited my grandparents, I always received the fun tasks in their extensive vegie patch. I was never asked to weed, but always ready to help out with harvesting, planting or watering on a hot day! Let the kids do the fun activities and do the more mundane tasks yourself.
2 Give Children Their Own Space To Garden. Let your kids have ownership of their own garden bed, to grow their own plants and to decorate it how they want to. Start with easy to grow vegies, flowers or herbs. All of the plants in our Vegie, Flower and Herb Patch Kits have been specially chosen to be easy and quick to grow. 3 Have Tools That Are Made For Children Having size appropriate tools can make all the difference. Gloves that fit snugly are a must, as are hand tools specifically designed for children. A large watering can is going to be too heavy for a child to lift, but a smaller one or a Bottle Top Waterer will be just perfect. 4 Start Small Whilst we would all love to have magnificent blooming gardens that flow on for acres, we need to be realistic when gardening with kids. Start with a small garden bed, or plant some strawberries or tomatoes in a pot or two. Probably, one of the easiest ways to start growing is to grow vegetable tops on a saucer of water; carrots, leeks, turnips, celery and bok choy will all grow leaves from the stem that is usually thrown away or composted.

5 Plant The Right Plants For The Season And Climate Zone Kids will quickly loose interest if seeds don’t germinate or plants die, so make sure that the plants you grow are appropriate. Growing pineapples or bananas in Victoria or Tasmania will probably never work, likewise, growing broccoli or cauliflower during the wet season in Northern Australia will be a disaster! Research online or use our Grow Guide to ensure your kids have every chance of gardening success. 6 Aim For Some Quick Results Kids will respond better to plants that grow and/or germinate quickly. Try planting some cress or radish seeds, both these seeds with germinate within a day or two. And just like my kids, I always get excited to see my new “babies”! Making a Cress Egg Head can be a fun and nutritious activity for children. 7 Get Arty Gardening isn’t always about growing plants. Children will love to make a scarecrow, a bird feeder or even paint their own rocks to use as plant labels garden art. Older children can write the names of plants on the rocks, whilst younger kids can plant the colour of the flower, or simply do their own thing!
Parenting
10 Be Prepared For Some Loses When planting seeds, seedlings or plants with children, I usually use at least twice as many as are required. As all gardeners know, sometimes things don’t go to plan and plants die or seeds don’t germinate. By doubling the required number you will reduce the chance of a complete flop, so the children won’t lose interest. And if garden plan A doesn’t work, remember there are 25 other letters in the alphabet. I hope these ideas will give you some inspiration to help your kids love gardening and growing their own food. Happy Gardening! Erica Lovel is the owner of Gardening 4 Kids, an online store stocking Australia’s largest range of high quality children’s gardening tools and equipment. She is the mother of four kids and grandmother of two. Erica grew up surrounded by the wonderful gardens and vegie patches of her family and friends. Erica is passionate about gardening, the environment and sustainability. She shares her passions with her children and hopes to inspire many young people to value the wonder of the natural world. www.gardening4kids.com.au
8 Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle! “Junk Gardening” can look absolutely fantastic and this a bit of creativity, lots of items that we throw away can be used in the garden, and it teaches are children an important lesson about sustainably. We recently made a herb garden from an old kettle BBQ. Another great idea for children is to make mini gardens from used tin cans. My children have painted old surfboards and a worn out rotary clothes line, all used to brighten up the garden. Almost another can be used, one of my daughters came home from school recently with sweet peas planted in an old pencil case! Be creative, the kids will love it! 9 Create Some Wild Areas Children love seeing wildlife in their garden. Try creating a birdfeeder, a bird bath or even a lizard lounge. Grow some plants that attract butterflies and birds.

How to grow herbs in Autumn & Winter Did you know that indoor gardening can be just as fun as it is in the great outdoors? There are many varieties of herbs, veggies and flowers that thrive during the cooler months. Herbs are often a great starting point as they will grow happily on a window sill that gets a little sun, and if you choose the right ones, they will grow all year round!
Our top picks for Autumn and Winter are: Basil, Parsley, Coriander, Mint and Chives. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to grow tasty herbs such as these from seed indoors: 1. Fill your chosen container 3/4 full with a good quality potting mix (for a list of creative container ideas, read on) 2. Sprinkle your seeds on top of the potting mix then cover with a little more of the potting mix. The rule of thumb is that the top layer of potting mix should be no deeper that the size of the seed. 3. Place your container in a sunny spot (like a window sill) and check every day to make sure the potting mix isn’t drying out – you want it to be moist but not too wet. Using a spray bottle rather than a watering can will help to ensure you don’t drown your seeds. 4. Your seeds should sprout 1-2 weeks after planting. Once they grow to a few centimetres tall you may want to move them
8
to a bigger pot to encourage more growth. Some of our favourite recycled container ideas to plant your seeds in include: 1. Soup cans 2. Egg cartons 3. Yoghurt containers 4. Tea cups 5. Old shoes or gumboots All of these things are cheap (if not free!) and can be painted or decorated in material, ribbon and embellishments of your choice. Rediscovering Time Under The Open Sky
5 Outdoor Sensory Play Ideas for Slowing Down with Children If there were a theory of the fantastic as there is for logic, then we would be able to discover the art of invention. (Novalis) In 1973, the Italian writer and children’s book author Gianni Rodari set this quotation in the introduction to his magnum opus, The Grammar of Fantasy. However, imagination requires no theory, merely time. Time is the main element children need to discover their personal art of invention. They are driven by their innate intuition, imagination and creativity as they handle, explore and experiment with objects and materials. The joy of learning is also stimulated by imagination and not only through logic. With a young child’s physical health and well being in mind, I tried to imagine outdoor spaces where children can slow down, enjoy time, develop their soft skills, and experience psychomotor learning. These prepared environments nurture the child’s self-guided exploration of sensory perception, motion, creativity and imagination, in nature & daylight. Each prepared environment can be set up and equipped by the parents or teachers themselves, or together with the children. Any outdoor space can be used: gardens, backyards, terraces or the areas surrounding day care facilities. I have designed 5 play ideas children can engage with just by following their intuition. Here they are free to experiment, understand and apply anything their innate creativity suggests. Take time to observe the children, slow your pace along with them. Do not set any rules or explain how a play idea might be improved, simply listen to their stories and enjoy the quality of your time together. 1. “The Fairy Tale Forest” A fairy tale forest exists somewhere in the outdoor space around every house, school or day care facility. It is a space children seek out to play by themselves with no, or very few toys, and where they use nature as the stage for their games, adventures and stories. This can be a shady place under a tree where light and shadow form particular patterns, or one near large stones where moss
10
grows to form a green carpet for their stories and games. If your children won’t have discovered this place in the outdoor space yet, you can prepare the environment: lay out Willow branches, some rocks and half cut smaller tree trunks to create an inviting retreat to serve as stage and scenery for the great stories and fairy tales children will invent. 2. “The Outline” Children love rocks! They love throwing them, rolling them and using them to build things. «While the child builds up the tower, she is actually building herself too,» wrote German pedagogue, Hugo Kükelhaus (1900–1984) in his reflections on the ways that bodies are able to learn. How about giving children an opportunity to compare natural shapes with their own shape? Feeling comfortable in space is something children need to experience starting with their own proprioception. Learning in outdoor spaces allows them to explore how their body feels comfortable in relation to the earth and gravity. 3. “The Cretan Labyrinth” This is a place/space that kids can explore in all sorts of ways: barefoot for experimenting with their tactile sense, balancing on the edges, moving backwards, forwards and sideways, going inside and coming back outside, discovering shortcuts and playing with their sense of direction. The most fantastic thing for children, though, is actually building the labyrinth. They can use sticks, stones and ropes to do so, or dig it in sand, mud or grass. Designing labyrinths challenges children and helps them discover the complexity within simplicity. Read the full article here

Easter
Chocolate-Free Easter Gift Ideas Whether it be because of allergies or simply by parent's choice, the fact is that there is a growing demand for chocolate-free Easter gifts for children. We're two of the parents who have made the choice to minimise chocolate for our two very young children. Some people wonder what on Earth we actually give our kids for Easter, but it's surprising how many alternatives there actually is to chocolate! Most dollar shops (pictured is my local dollar shop's Easter display) coming up to Easter will have hollow plastic eggs (usually about the size of real eggs) that pull apart to put things inside, so an Easter Egg hunt is still possible and fun! Here is a list of items that can be placed inside the Easter Eggs, and also some small gift ideas from the big bunny himself. There are probably plenty of other items that would be fantastic that haven't occurred to me also! Just remember to keep it age appropriate if you're hosting an egg hunt or similar :) -Bubble Blowers -Stickers -Stamps -Mini pencils/ crayons -Little soft chicks -Activity/ Colouring Books -Little bath ducks -Matchbox cars -Kid-Friendly costume jewellery -Egg cups -An item of (melamine) crockery: plate/ cup/ bowl -Grapes & Strawberries -Sultanas I hope this provides some good chocolate-free alternatives! Easter Chocolate Overload – using up excess chocolate For us Easter can end up with the Children’s supply of chocolate looking bigger than the iceberg that hit the Titanic. Much like the Titanic, the sheer volume of chocolate is enough to sink this family. While we try not to spoil the children, extended family enjoy buying them chocolate eggs and they love receiving them! While I am pretty lax on Easter day, I am generally quite strict on the amount of chocolate eaten so often we still have a supply of Easter Chocolates 6 months down the track. As one simply cannot keep pigging out on Chocolate Easter Eggs, here are some of my favourite ways to use up any excess Easter Chocolate. • As is – Eating the Easter Eggs. Yes this is the first option and the most simple. • Chocolate Sauce for Ice-cream. Simply warm up some cream in the Microwave for 1-2 minutes and then break your chocolate into the hot cream using this heat to melt the chocolate. You may need to heat the bowl again slightly depending on the amount of chocolate sauce you are making. • Chocolate Chip Cookies. Break the chocolate up into little bits and use it to create chocolate chip cookies. • Chocolate Chip Ice-Cream. Break the chocolate up into little bits and put these in a vanilla base ice-cream recipe to create chocolate chip ice-cream. • Chocolate BBQ Bananas. Cut a line down the middle of the banana and squeeze some chocolate into this, then wrap the banana in foil. Place on a warm BBQ until the banana is soft and the chocolate melted. • Chocolate Sauce for Waffles. Using the same technique as the chocolate sauce for icecream, drizzle your homemade chocolate sauce over waffles or pancakes. What else could you suggest?

Snack Swap for Busy Mums Often our snacking habits are what can bring a good diet down. There are so many factors that lead to making a bad snack choice. Mums are busy! Once you have sorted everyone else’s snack there isn’t much time left for you to eat. That’s when our energy and blood sugar levels can drop leaving us feeling tired and flat, irritable with a headache and HUNGRY! That’s when we grab whatever we can, normally something quick and easy that is going to give us an instant energy boost like chocolate, cake, muffins, lollies, chips….you get the drift! When we eat this way, we miss out on essential nutrition for energy and it makes it really hard to know how much food you have eaten which can lead to weight gain.
3. Chocolate – Perfect for when you need to pick your energy off the floor at around 3.30pm but as quick as your energy comes up, it’s not long before it drops again. With such a big sugar hit….what goes up, must come down. This snack swap is a favourite – it swaps chocolate for chocolate, great! We include some nuts for healthy fats and protein and some dates to sweeten it up. These can be made in advance and frozen and then grab one as needed. SWAP – Chocolate for Nutty Chocolate Balls
A very easy and simple way to avoid this happening is to look at some snack swaps. Here are a few ideas to help you get started: 1. Rice crackers – always in the cupboard and loved by the whole family. It’s very easy to eat a whole packet without realising. On their own they are only going to fill the gap in your stomach briefly before you get hungry again. It’s best to combine these with some protein to keep you fuller for long and hummus dip is a great example. You only need a few crackers with dip to make up the snack. SWAP – Rice Crackers with Rice Crackers with Hummus Dip. See our recipe for Pumpkin Hummus Dip for a little variety. 2. Flavoured yoghurt – We always are told that yoghurt is a great snack and it is but the majority of the yoghurt for sale isn’t yoghurt at all. Many ingredients are added (flavours, sweeteners, thickeners) to get it to a yoghurt like product with some yoghurts having up to 4 teaspoons of sugar per tub and this includes ones marketed to kids! SWAP – Flavoured Yoghurt to Natural Yoghurt with some fresh fruit
15
Before you do grab a snack though there are a few things you should consider: • Do I really need a snack or am I just bored? Am I actually hungry? • How long until my next meal? Is dinner or lunch only an hour away? • Are you stressed or comfort eating? • How much water have I had today? Dehydration can make you feel hungry! • It’s just a snack….don’t fill up on it! ground spices with the remaining ingredients for the spice marinade, and place in a large bowl with the chicken drumsticks. Massage the spice mix into the drumsticks, ensuring that the chicken is evenly coated. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight. For best results, marinate for 24 hours so the flavours develop even further. Preheat the oven to 180°C. Brush the marinated drumsticks with oil and arrange on a roasting tray in a single layer and add 80 ml of water. Cook for 30 – 35 minutes or until cooked through and golden, turning the chicken at halfway so the chicken browns evenly when cooking. Taste and season with sea salt and freshly cracked pepper if needed. Place the chicken drumsticks onto a large platter, then pour the remaining juices from the pan over the drumsticks. Sprinkle with coriander leaves and squeeze over the juice from the lemons. Serve with fermented veg, a huge salad or green veggies. Oh and we make this at home sometimes with whole chooks, or chicken thighs (skin on of course) or marylands, you can use the spice mix on livers and hearts for a quick sear up in the pan and if you want to try something that will blow you mind, a free range duck with this spice or even a piece of snapper or sardines on the grill, hit the spot!

Cakes & Bakes Peanut Butter Raspberry & pear Banana Bread cake
INGREDIENTS: 3 large ripe bananas — mashed 3 cups of almond Meal 2 Heaped Tablespoons of Whole Peanut Butter— Crunchy one! 1 Heaped Tablespoon of P82 Powder (Ifyou can't source this, use another spoon of Peanut Butter) 2 teaspoons ofVanilla Extract 2 teaspoons of baking powder 3 Whole Eggs — Beaten 1 Tablespoon of Agave or Honey METHOD: 1. Pre -heat the oven to 200 degrees and have a non stick baking dish ready 2. Beat the eggs in a large bowl and then add the mashed banana vanilla extract, the agave honey, the peanut butter and P82 and mix it together as well as you can with a fork or spatula. Then sieve in the almond meal, the baking powder and really get stuck into the mixing. You will find it mixes pretty well, but at this point, whip out 3. your hand blender and blend it up so it's pretty well blended and runny, but still allow for a few chunks of banana and the peanut butter to remain crunchy. 4. Pour into your baking dish and bake for approx 30 minutes until it has raised and baked through. 5. You should really remove from the oven and stand for a bit, but oh boy oh boy... let's see ifyou can manage it. Makes 8 serves, perfect for a cup of tea, or cut it into 6 for a nice breakfast slice! Meanwhile, melt a little butter (say 50g) and brush the warm cake to cover in butter. Immediately sprinkle cinnamon sugar over the butter so it sticks, and serve warm and slightly sticky. 8 Foods to Boost your Focus
Ever find yourself struggling to focus on the task at hand? Being a mother is a busy and demanding job, both physically and mentally. Which is why the ability to focus on what really matters, and to do it quickly and confidently at all times, is key to success and your sanity. The good news is you can boost your focus by paying attention to which foods you choose to eat. It really is as simple as focusing on eating more ‘real food’ and less processed foods. Refuelling smart results in a multitude of benefits including better stamina, focus, mood and cognition. The following foods in particular, have been shown in nutritional studies to assist in boosting focus and are easy to add to any eating plan.
1. Caffeine
Caffeine is the world’s most widely consumed psychostimulant found in coffee, tea and chocolate. We love it because it gives us that extra boost and buzz. Not only do we enjoy the taste but also we depend on it to keep us alert. The recommend dose per day is 400mg, which is around three cups of coffee. There is a tipping point where we can become over stimulated and less focused.
2.Deeply Pigmented Fruits
Fruits with a deep coloured skin such as blueberries, goji berries, cherries, plums, strawberries and raspberries contain a phytochemical called anthocyanin. This is what gives the skin its colour and also indicates a high level of antioxidants present. Antioxidants are well known for supporting healthy ageing. Opt for fruits and vegetables with a deeper colour as they are likely to contain more nutrients.
3. Healthy Fats
Fat is not our enemy. There is however a great distinction between good and bad fats. Good fats such as found in avocado, oily fish such as wild salmon, herring, mackerel, sardines and anchovies and good quality oil such as extra virgin olive oil should be celebrated for their role in improving our mental health and maintaining better brain health, memory and cognition.
20
4. Leafy Greens
When it comes to fresh food, anything green is good. Leafy greens including salad leaves, kale, spinach, Chinese broccoli, chard and many more are now recognised as being the most important foods to eat for better brain health and function. Six serves a week are recommended.
5. Nuts and Seeds
Mother nature is very clever and created foods that resembled the area in the body they best support. For example, walnuts look like a brain and have been shown to support cognitive health. Walnuts contain a large dose of DHA, which is a type of Omega- 3 fatty acid. Consuming a handful of walnuts a day will help reach the recommended dose of DHA. Almonds, flaxseeds and sunflower seeds are also beneficial for brain health. Five small serves a week is ideal.
6. Eggs
Eggs make for the perfect snack and additional boost of protein in meals. Eggs are a complete protein containing all the essential amino acids as well as choline which is a vital nutrient for stimulating mental clarity and is often lacking in western diets. Get cracking with some eggs and give your brain a boost.

Food
7. Whole Grains
Grains often get a bad rep because some contain gluten, but they are actually great for good brain health. Whole grains are considered complex carbohydrates, which means they have not been stripped of their nutrients like refined grains such as white bread or white rice. Oats, couscous, brown rice, rye, barley, quinoa and wheat are the better known varieties.
8. Dark Chocolate
Before you get overly excited about the inclusion of chocolate, make sure you are eating the right kind of chocolate. Opt for high quality dark chocolate with at least 70 per cent cocoa solids. Remember, in this instance, it’s definitely quality over quantity. It’s the cacao which provides the benefit, not the added sugar or fat. Article by Dr Jenny Brockis. Author of Future Brain. Amanda’s Amazing Story: Of loss and awakening
My journey to wellness started in 2004 I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). This led to a paralysis in 2009, when I lost the ability to walk, wash and feed myself.
My world completely stopped and it was turned upside down. It was a time of true loss that led to a miraculous awakening. After treatment in hospital I was transferred into rehabilitation at Epworth Richmond in Melbourne - and the work began. I stayed for 2 months. I hit rock bottom; I had to ask myself “Am I ever going to walk again”?
I was stretched to my limits emotionally and I adopted this way of living, and what would be physically, beyond normal comprehension and around the corner would change my world. everything stopped. Prior to this I had to lay down half of the day, every I was faced with the idea that I may never be able to pick a glass up again, dress, wash or feed myself. I was lucky to receive Kinesiology every few days, while the fantastic physio’s and a NeuroPhysiotherapist worked hard teaching my body how to walk again. With a 50/50 chance of walking again, I ran in 6 weeks. I returned home, and as I began to research why I got so sick. I came across the Paleo diet and learned about the benefits of eliminating inflammation from my body, in an attempt to unravel the complexities of Autoimmune Disease. I learned all about the mitochondria, and their deficiency in autoimmune disease. I now knew that I needed to nourish my body on a cellular level to achieve better results. This inspired me to fine tune my nutrition requirements even further. Inspired by Dr Terry Wahls’ research, I started to increase green leafy vegetables, colourful fruits and vegetables, ethically sourced protein and good fats.
22
day, recovering from the paralysis and experiencing MS symptoms of fatigue, brain fog, balance issues, pins and needles and intermittent weakness in my limbs. The brain fog started to subside, which in turn made me happier and more motivated to keep exercising and eating well. I went back to school to study for a Diploma in Sports Kinesiology (Sports Science / Kinesiology). I studied anatomy, physiology, motor learning, exercise, nutrition and Tradition Chinese Medicine techniques of Kinesiology. Today, I take a balanced approach, utilising all that western Medicine has to offer whilst combining this with Complimentary Medicine. Once I addressed my nutrition, my results became most profound.I have since made a full recovery and have managed to reverse many of my symptoms too. This is my sixth year of no new lesions, no disease activity or progression. In fact I feel more fit and healthier now, than before I was diagnosed at 24 years old. Treating the ‘cause’ has been the big key and understanding that I need to look at my body as a whole, not just in isolation. I now know that I need
www.mumsdelivery.com.au
Food to provide my body with the right environment for it to repair and thrive again. Kinesiology helped wake my muscles back up to my brain (as they are connected via the nervous system). It also assisted with helping me to find happiness in my life again, after having to deal with so much change after my big MS attack in 2009. Kinesiology can help you to access blocked emotions, blocked Qi and fear-based beliefs. These can limit you, and may ultimately cause physical symptoms and illness. As a last resort these blocks appear physically in the body if they are not addressed, dealt with and resolved. How you think and feel is a mirror image of what you see in your reality, and also what occurs biochemically in your body. I now understand that the body is truly connected, structurally, biochemically, emotionally and electromagnetically. I have now dedicated my life helping others rebuild their lives, at my Sports Kinesiology Private Practice in Prahran, Melbourne called ‘Bend Like Bamboo’. In clinic I help my clients address pieces of the pie that bring the body back into balance. We look at movement, nutrition, gut health, detox pathways, organ health, mediation, mastering the mind and addressing limiting beliefs using Kinesiology.
I still have MS, but you wouldn’t think so now. My journey to wellness has inspired me to help others understand, that they can also make a transformation in their life, illness, career, love.
Working with many clients now, I have been helping others improve the way that they eat. It became clear that we needed a simpler way. With busy schedules, stress and even disability, it is often difficult to ensure you are eating the right food. That is how my food range and new business Nourissh was born. At Nourissh we make fresh, organic and locally sourced lunches and dinners. We are on a mission to make eating better delicious and convenient. Because we know that when you eat better, you feel better. Our beautifully cooked restaurant quality meals are designed to maximise your nutrition, brain and gut health. Our goal is to nourish your body on a cellular level so your body can repair and thrive. By Amanda Campbell. Here’s how to find my team and me if you’d like to know more… www.nourissh.com www.bendlikebamboo.com
I am a speaker now and enjoy speaking at events in my volunteer role as a MS Ambassador for MS Australia. This year I was invited to be on the board for Australian Women’s Network as their Young Ambassador for Nutrition and Health.

5 Energy Boosting Tips for Busy Mums Being a Mum is undoubtedly the most rewarding job. It challenges you to be the best version of yourself you can be. However, to look after others, you must first look after yourself. Maintaining your wellness is important to allow you to achieve more in your day, spend more time with your family and set a great example for your children. Your wellbeing is critical to that of your family’s. So how can you improve your vitality to give you that boost of energy you need? • Look at your goals for inspiration and focus As an entrepreneur, Registered nurse and busy • Listen to something motivational - invest in Mum, I constantly balance wellness and ‘getting yourself and learn something new everything done’, so here are some tips I find useful in helping to boost my energy.
3. Nutrition
1. Set Goals
Set goals for yourself/your family. It is harder to stay motivated and energised in life without goals. You get ‘stuck’ in your day to day. Goal setting helps takes away that feeling of overwhelm we can experience as busy mums. Keep your goals visible. Look at them regularly to maintain focus on what you want to achieve and use bright pictures for inspiration. Review your goals regularly and consistently and remember to keep setting new ones.
2. Have a Dedicated Morning Routine
Allow yourself to spend time doing activities that energise you in the morning, to set the tone for the day. Create a morning routine for yourself to complete every day. It doesn’t have to take long, 30 mins is ideal but even 15 minutes is ok. Here are some energy boosting activities to get you started: • Get into nature/sunlight to send a wake-up signal to your brain’s internal clock • Drink water to rehydrate and make you feel more alert • Meditate to reduce stress levels and get a surge in feel-good hormones • Move your body - stretch/exercise to get your blood pumping and raise energy levels • Resist technology

Food is medicine! If you change one thing, give yourself the best nutrition possible. This is the fastest way to boost energy. Eat organic and avoid foods with gluten, dairy and refined sugar. To combat the tired feeling, choose foods with a lot of nutrition, including vegetables, beans, nuts, seeds, fruits, whole grains, and lean animal proteins. Avoid all refined breads, fried and fatty foods, sweets and desserts and any processed foods as they give little nutrition but contain high calories. You will feel so much better if you base your diet on minimally processed, whole foods. Smoothies are my breakfast of choice. There are many superfood smoothies around so choose one that you like and make it a regular part of your day. Here’s mine below for inspiration. Berry Smoothie: ~Frozen Mixed Berries ~Goji Berries ~Acai Berries ~Hemp Protein ~Maca ~Cacao ~Cinnamon ~Activated Raw Walnuts ~Greens ~Coconut Oil ~Hemp Oil ~Medicinal Mushrooms ~Soaked Chia ~Dates (if you like things a bit sweeter)

I add specific organic foods/drinks to my diet too. Look for foods to help enhance gut health and boost your immune system. ~Activated Raw Almonds ~Avocado ~Kale and spinach ~Quinoa ~Beans and lentils ~Berries ~Kombucha ~Kefir ~Fermented Foods
4. Sleep
8 Hours would be great, but reality is probably different. Let’s make the sleep we do get, the best quality we can. We need restful, restorative sleep so our bodies can repair and re-energise. When you do get to bed, don’t think about what you should be ‘doing right now’ or what you have to do tomorrow. Get organised before you go to bed. Write a list of what you need to do and plan it out before you sleep. Clear your mind with meditation, avoid technology and television. Also avoid stimulants such as caffeine and alcohol and avoid large meals at night.
5. Laugh
‘Laughter is the best medicine’. It is a stress-buster and energy booster. It helps you relax, recharge and increases energy. You have permission to engage in that activity that makes you laugh. Watch a funny movie or muck around with your kids. They will love it and it allows them permission to have fun. Shared laughter is one of the most effective tools for keeping relationships fresh and exciting and unites people. It will make you closer as a family. I hope these tips are useful to boost your energy and for you to be more of the SuperMum that you already are. Kylie Whyte is a coach, speaker and the founder of Teeny Travellers. Energy Tips for Tired & Busy Mums 1. Don’t Skip Breakfast Between packing lunchboxes, ensuring the kids actually eat their breakfast and fishing out school shirts from the ironing basket at the last minute, we can often feel rushed in the mornings and end up missing breakfast. Breakfast is essential in the maintenance of stable blood sugar levels, so you should try to avoid missing out. A drop in your blood sugar from skipping breakfast can cause you to feel tired. Make the time for a quick breakfast or grab a banana as you are running out of the door to boost your energy levels.
4. Adjust your sleep routine To state the obvious, if you are tired you need sleep, but it isn’t always about the quantity of sleep you get but the quality. If your mind is cluttered and thinking about tasks for the next day, your sleep can be disrupted. Write down a list of your priorities for the next day before you go to bed. This will remove them from your brain so you can have a great night’s sleep.
2. Eat protein and fibre over carbohydrates When you are feeling tired and hungry it might seem tempting to eat carbs, as our body is looking for that quick fix to boost our blood sugar. Resist this urge and reach for some protein and fibre instead for a more stable release of energy. This will give you enough energy to keep you going until your next meal, as opposed to seeing you experiencing another slump an hour later.
5. Take time for yourself It is important to have “me” time as a mum because it recharges your mental energy. When your kids are napping during the day, take some time to pick up a book or to exercise. This will give you a boost in mood along with increased patience and energy for your kids. Taking time for yourself isn’t selfish, it’s a necessary way to ‘replenish your cup’, so to speak. Even a simple ten minutes of deep breathing daily on your own can do wonders for reinvigorating you.
3. Consider what could be making you tired If you are over-tired and lacking energy it might not only be caused by the demands of motherhood. Ubiquinol is a powerful antioxidant our body produces to power our cells, and as we age our natural levels drop. Ubiquinol assists in extracting energy from food, so low levels may explain why you are lacking energy. Speak with your healthcare practitioner if you think this might apply to you and they may recommend supplementation.

DIY Manicure and Pedicure
Having time to do your nails with young children can be hard, but does not have to be impossible. So here are our tips on achieving a great DIY manicure and pedicure at home. Knowing how time limited mums can be, the best time to do you manicure and pedicure is at night when the children are asleep. If that is not possible try to do it when they are happily occupied, playing a game or watching TV. Dependant on when you do your manicure or pedicure you may wish to skip certain steps or only do the manicure today and the pedicure another day.
1. Start Anew
Using acetone and a soft cottonwool segment or pad remove all the old nail polish from your finger and toe nails. Then using a good quality nail clipper, trim your nails and file them to the shape desired. At this point you can use a buffing block/tool to smooth out any bumps and to take away yellow stains from previous polish. Tip: Cut a small V into ingrown toe nails and file the middle of the nail firmly to reduce the pain and fix the nail.
2. Soft, smooth skin
For quick manicures and pedicures you can skip this step, however to get the most out of your feet and hands, take a few minutes to revitalise your skin. If possible, perform your manicure straight after a bath/shower as your skin is soft and pliable. If this is not possible, soak your feet/hands in water for 5 or so minutes. Remove, pat dry and then exfoliate to remove dead skin. Place back in the water to remove exfoliating scrub and then dry your feet. Repeat with your hands. Once dry use a foot scrubbing/filing tool to remove any hard/ callous skin.
3. Cuticles and Care
While you skin is still soft, it is the ideal time to focus on your cuticles. You can further soften them with cuticle cream around your nails. Then using an orange stick, push back your cuticles and shape them as desired. Now is also the time to clean under your nails and to moisturise your hands and feet all over. Body Butter or specialised Heel Balm cream is ideal to help remove heel cracks. Tip: Dip a paper towel into a little white vinegar and rub over nails to remove any oily residue from the creams.
28
www.mumsdelivery.com.au
Beauty Tip: Use quality products to give you better results. They go on easier and generally will last longer.
4. Back to Base
Now it’s time to apply your base coat. Applying a base coast is important for a number of reasons. Firstly it will smooth out further bumps/ridges on your nails. Secondly is reduces the chance of staining occurring on your nails and thirdly for your finger nails the base coats help strengthen the nails.
5. Polish Time
For Pedicures, place separators between your toes to stop the polish from bumping and ruining. I find it easier to do your toe nails first and then your finger nails, however this is subjective to personal preference. Do an initial coat on all your nails and then let it dry. The best way to put polish on your nails is with an initial stroke of polish down the middle of the nail with another stroke either side of this line. Place the polish brush back into the polish bottle as often as needed so that you get an even coat with each swipe. Try not to have too much polish on the brush and ensure that each coat has dried thoroughly before adding another.
5. Topping it off
Finally after two coats of your desired colour, a top coat of polish is recommended to provide a high gloss look and to help prevent the polish from chipping.
6. Almost done‌.now just relax and let it dry
It can be hard to sit still and wait, however the last thing you want to do is ruin your Manicure or Pedicure by moving and touching things. Allow your nails to completely dry all over to give you the best results.

Flying with Children Flying with children can be daunting. There are so many questions and information that needs to be considered before taking off on your family holiday. How will you children handle the flight? What will you do to keep them occupied? When should you fly and more. Based on our experience, here are our tips when flying with children.
Booking the Flights
Flight Planning: No matter where you are going, flying with children requires more preparation and patience than before. If you are planning an overseas flight, try booking a night flight (departing around 5,6,7,8pm) so you child is awake at the beginning and easier to manage at the airport, yet likely to feel tired and sleepy soon after take-off resulting in a greater chance of them sleeping on the aeroplane; making the travel time seem shorter. Arrive early. The last thing you want to do is rush around the airport trying to check in and get to your plane in a hurry with children. Patience will be pushed, tempers will flare and it creates an unhappy start to the holiday. Try to arrive early so your children can enjoy the experience of being at the airport; getting to watch the planes take-off and land. For early morning flights, consider booking airport accommodation to ensure a stress-free start to the holiday.
Packing
Get them involved. Depending on their age, you can ask them to get their clothing ready and/or keep them involved in the packing process. When packing, think about the weather you are heading too, along with the activities you will be undertaking and what is required for these. It is important to remember your baggage weight limits and that you will most likely be returning with souvenirs and thus heavier bags. On-board Entertainment. Provide each child with their own bag/backpack which they can pack with items for their on-board entertainment. Key items to pack include: Colouring-in pencils and book, reading book or two and small items they children can easily play with like cars or dolls. Unless the plane offers on-board entertainment (movies, video games etc) I would pack a tech toy (LeapPad, Tablet, Nintendo DS etc) to keep them occupied for longer periods. Tip: Check the toys they pack and the weight of the backpack so it isn’t too heavy for them to carry. Tip: A new toy that is hidden and only brought out for good behaviour or when needed is a great distraction.
During the Flight
Ears and flying. Many passengers will experience a level of discomfort during take-off and landing, as your ears try to equalise the change in air pressure. You can help your child equalise their ear pressure by getting them to yawn repetitively, by swallowing through chewing a soft chewy lolly or chewing gum or by pinching their nostrils shut, breathing in a large mouthful of air and while keeping the mouth and nose shut trying to gently blow the air out. Hobart with Kids Hobart is Tasmania's capital city. It sits on the River Derwent in Tasmania's south and offers a great base for a fantastic, beautiful and enjoyable family holiday. Hobart is a popular holiday area and offers a lot of interesting family activities. To enjoy all the diverse activities available in Hobart we rented a car, so that we were able to enjoy everything. Here are some of our favourite activities:
Hastings Caves & Thermal Springs Located in Hasting, a 90-minute scenic drive south of Hobart through the Huon Valley. Formed millions of years ago, the Hastings Cave was discovered in 1917 by timber workers. To visit the cave, you will need to purchase a ticket which includes a 45-minute tour and entry to the Thermal Springs. It is advised that you arrive 30 minutes before your ideal tour time, in order to book your tour, drive to the caves and then complete the 5-minute walk to the cave. The cave is spacious and well lit. There are a number of stairs within the cave, so consider your child’s age/ability. We took our 3year old who loved the experience, however we did have to carry him around half way. Our 8yr old daughter loved the experience as well. Opening hours and cave tour times vary throughout the year, so check their website for more details.
In addition to the caves, there are some nature walks through the forest. There are a number of March Flies and Mosquito’s around the Forrest so I recommend spraying insect repellent prior to your walk to Hastings cave.
After seeing the spectacular caves, we went and enjoyed the Thermal Spring pool. Within this area there are amenities, picnic spots and BBQs, so you can enjoy a nice family lunch and swim. There are also another couple of bushwalks where you may be lucky enough to see the local platypus.
Note: It is important to know that the temperature of the cave is 9 degrees all year round so pack some warmer clothing. The Temperature of the Thermal Springs is a lovely 28 degrees, so don’t forget your swimmers for the Thermal Springs. 36

Coal River Valley & Richmond Day Trip
Travel
Enjoy a pleasant day of driving through beautiful countryside. The Coal River Valley is located only 5 minutes from Hobart CBD and has a range of activities available to suit all family members. Here is a day trip we enjoyed which can easily be replicated or adjusted to suit your preference.
ZooDoo Zoo
Located in Richmond (5 minutes further than Coal River Valley), the ZooDoo Zoo is a great family fun activity. While in Tasmania you’ve got to see a real life Tassie Devil, so head to ZooDoo Zoo for a zoo with a great a hands on approach to animals. There are daily animal presentations where visitors get to feed a lion (yes really), pat a reptile and see Tassie Devils being fed! ZooDoo Zoo also offers a unique Safari tour bus where you can ride around the zoo and have the opportunity to feed larger animals. We loved seeing the animals especially the Tassie Devil as my son has a toy Tassie Devil but has never seen one in real life. I was super impressed that the children and I were able to (safely) feed a lioness with tongs – that is a once in a lifetime experience. Following this we then went through the farmyard area and feed goats, chickens, kangaroo’s and more. The ZooDoo Zoo also boasts an indoor play-area, however I am not sure what days it runs on, or if it only runs in peak periods or on the weekends, as the rides were not working whilst we were there.
Richmond
Following the Zoo, head to the Historic town of Richmond to see the heritage buildings dating back to the 1820’s. There are some great craft boutiques and you can stop for lunch at the pub before driving across the oldest bridge in Australia.
Coal River Farm
After lunch we visited the Coal River Farm where you can pick fruit that is in season. Our children enjoyed filling a punnet of delicious strawberries and I think going fruit picking was a great experience. It offers a good way to show the children the other fruit varieties growing and both how and where much of the food that they eat comes from. The Coal River Farm offers a number of experiences; they create boutique chocolates and cheese onsite, both of which you can have a little tasting of at the counter. There is also a restaurant onsite to enjoy some of their delicacies.
Our ‘punnet’ of strawberries
End the day with a lovely wine tasting at Frogmore Creek winery Only a few minutes down the road from Coal River Farm, Frogmore Creek Winery offers a great opportunity to taste some of the great Tasmanian Wines while in the area. Although wine tasting is hard with children, the winery will let an adult take the children out into the vineyard and have a little ‘run around’ while the other adults are wine tasting. So if you can convince the driver to do this for you, it is well worth the stop. I enjoyed the experience, learning about local wines and any wines purchased provide a great souvenir to bring home and share with friends and family.

As parents, there is always a constant fear that our children will stumble across information and images that they shouldn’t while online. With the increasing use of technology within schools and everyday life, there are more and more opportunities for inquisitive children to see information they shouldn’t. Thankfully oue parental concerns have been answered with Kiddle – the kid safe visual search engine. Kiddle offers a safer and more child friendly search engine with the search results satisfy family friendly requirements. Featuring a similar look and feel to Google, Kiddle offers a more kid friendly appearance with a robot helper and a planet background. Within Kiddle, you can search the web, images, news and videos. If you type in a search for something inappropriate the robot simply informs you: Oops, looks like your query contained some bad words. Please try again!

One of the bits I like the most about Kiddle is that it takes away the unnecessary rubbish for Kids. For example; search ‘Miley Cyrus’ and you only get biographies and news about her; no Instagram or Twitter accounts with inappropriate pictures.
