Our Programme

Our programme aims to develop children's 'Skills for Life'. It helps them grow into confident adults, that understand and enjoy the importance of leading healthy active lifestyles.

At your first class, you will have experienced a fraction of the potential that Tumble Tots has to offer your child in the future.

Today’s equipment is only a small part of the apparatus and the layout is changed every two weeks (six weeks for 6 MonthsWalking).

This gives us the opportunity to concentrate on different skills and to intensify the challenges as the children develop within the programme.

Age Groups:

 6 Months - Walking

 Walking - 2 Years

 2 - 3 Years

 3 Years - School Age

 Gymbobs (School Age - 7 Years)

The basic philosophy is to ‘build selfconfidence’ through the development of the child’s physical learning. This is achieved by focusing on four important areas:

 General motor skills

 Social awareness

 Self assurance

 Self discipline

They gain this through:

 A structured development programme

 Ongoing challenges

 A fun and happy atmosphere

 Well trained and enthusiastic staff

 A safe environment

Top Tips in the Classes

 When your child receives their membership pack, encourage them to wear their t-shirt in classes to feel part of the club!

 Before you leave and in the case of severe weather conditions, please check your text messages, emails, our website or Facebook page for closures.

 Please dress children in suitable clothing to allow for better movement and avoid jewellery, dummies or any clothing that can catch on the equipment or cause injury.

 Barefoot is best (and safest) for children as this helps with their development. Grownups can wear shoes if they aren’t high heels or heavy boots as these can hurt small fingers or toes.

 Please take your child to the toilet before classes begin to save interruption (this is especially important for the over 3’s classes).

 If you need to bring a sibling along to class, please be aware that they are unable to participate or play on the equipment as they will not be covered by insurance. We recommend bringing something to occupy them such as a book or colouring.

 Make sure you arrive in plenty of time and register your child at the desk.

 Parents are fully responsible for their children in the under 3’s classes. We ask that you work directly with your child, encouraging and assisting where necessary. Support your child by holding the back of their T-Shirt so their hands are free for climbing and to aid balance.

 In the over 3’s classes, grown-ups are not actively involved but must always remain on the premises.

 Children are asked not to eat or drink on the equipment but if they need refreshments, you are welcome to take them to the waiting area.

 Please do not take any photographs or videos during the classes and refrain from using mobile phones so your child has your full attention.

 Do not let children onto the equipment before or after classes. Please move to the waiting area so we can set-up safely for the next class.

Objectives & Benefits

Our progressive play programme is designed to develop your child’s physical skills. Using bespoke colourful equipment, we focus on agility, balance, climbing and co-ordination, which enhances brain development and builds confidence.

Every session is supervised by our amazing specially trained staff, getting the best out of each child. Up until 3 years, grown-ups participate as well so that parents, carers and even grandparents can spend time with little ones as they develop.

The journey begins for babies from 6 months old who can sit up unaided. Here’s how our classes break down:

6 Months – Walking

Babies explore the equipment in a happy and relaxed environment. This enhances their brain development and helps them to reach key milestones such as crawling, cruising and walking, taking them onto the next class.

Walking – 2 Years

Confidently walking toddlers are now introduced to an exciting circuit of equipment as well as hand held co-ordination activities, developing their fine motor skills. ‘Circle Time’ helps language development through rhymes and action songs.

2 – 3 Years

Working together in small groups, little ones are introduced to stations with more challenging equipment to refine their agility, balance and climbing skills. Following instructions and learning to take turns develops their listening and social skills, as well as confidence.

3 Years – School Age*

Children now take part independently without their grownup, putting into practice their skills for life. Our staff challenge each child individually to their full potential, preparing them for school, physically, socially and mentally.

Gymbobs (School Age – 7 Years)*

Gymbobs is the pinnacle class of Tumble Tots, bringing together everything children have learnt so far! Using challenging equipment setups, relay races, team games and warm-up exercises, Gymbobs is a perfect addition to a child’s school P.E. provision.

*For the 3 Years – School Age and Gymbobs (School Age – 7 Years) classes, parents must remain on site.

Why We Love Tumble Tots!

With the summer break coming up in July, here are 10 reasons why we hope to see you all again after the holidays.

1 It’s Fun for Everyone!

Tumble Tots is not only fun for babies, toddlers, and pre-schoolers, but for grownups too!

Grownups actively take part in sessions, until little ones reach the 3 Years – School Age class, to help with their child’s development alongside staff.

Attending classes together each week gives parents the opportunity to spend precious quality time with their little one strengthening their bond and making life-long memories.

2 Fully Trained Friendly Staff

Children learn best when they feel safe and secure which is why all our staff are fully trained!

We always have one member of staff to every six children so they can work closely with each child to build relationships and bring out the best in them.

Building relationships over time is important for children’s learning, personal, social, and emotional development as well as overall wellbeing, and therefore future success.

3 Unique & Bespoke Equipment

Our equipment was specially designed for pre-school children by the original founder and still represents his objectives!

Each individual piece aids a different aspect of children’s physical development in agility, balance, climbing and co-ordination. We use bright colours to help make classes fun and promote early identification of colours which is an important part of a child’s development.

All the wooden and foam apparatus is handmade in the UK to a high standard and unique to Tumble Tots, so can’t be found in other activity classes and helps support British businesses.

4 Benefits Body & Brain Development

The physical activities in our programme support early years body and brain development!

Thirty minutes of “Tummy time” each day is essential for infants as lifting their heads helps to strengthen the neck and upper back muscles which prepares them for developmental milestones such as crawling, rolling over, and sitting up independently ready to start Tumble Tots.

Practising agility, balance and climbing in our classes improves children’s core strength which is the foundation of

a healthy body and gives them a better posture, improved concentration and more energy and builds the gross motor skills needed to take part in activities.

Core strength combined with co-ordination activities improves fine motor skills, supporting children’s ability to manipulate objects (such as pens for writing) which is later linked to early literacy, according to the EYFS.

5 Over Forty Years’ Experience

Time flies when you’re having fun, but the past 40 years has given us a wealth of knowledge and experience in child development!

Physical activity has always been and will always be an important part of every stage of life, no matter if you’re 4 months, 4 years, or 4 decades, but seeing a second generation of Tumble Tots whose parents attended when they were younger shows how well we have stood the test of time and how well thought of our classes are.

We work closely with early years experts in line with new and relevant research to maintain our reputation as the best physical play activity and ensure that our programme continues to provide children with the best start in life.

6 Supports Local Communities

By attending classes, you are not only supporting our franchisees, but also their teams and the venues they operate in!

All our franchisees are self-employed and create new jobs in the community by hiring staff, most of which are parents who need flexible roles to work around their families.

Many of the venues that franchisees hire for classes are charities and the money they raise through hiring is used to maintain and improve the buildings which host local events, youth clubs, entertainment, and many other activities which the whole community benefits from.

7 Age Specific Classes

Each class is tailored to suit the age and specific stage of a child’s development meaning that your little one will attend sessions with children of the same age and with similar capabilities:

 6 Months – Walking

 Walking – 2 Years

 2 – 3 Years

 3 Years – School Age

 Gymbobs (School Age – 7 Years)

17

Our delicious range of meals, finger foods and snacks offer a wide variety of natural tastes and textures for babies, toddlers and bigger kids too.

As children move up through the programme, they will develop and refine their skills further, learn new proficiencies and gain more confidence in their abilities.

Interacting with other children also helps develop their social skills and creates friendships, which leads to improved mental capacity and cognitive abilities, as well as good overall mental health.

8

Designed with the EYFS in Mind

Our classes are designed with the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) standards in mind!

Our activities incorporate elements from the seven key areas that the EYFS has outlined as important to ensure that children learn and develop to their full potential:

 Communication and language

 Physical development

 Personal, social, and emotional development

 Literacy

 Mathematics

 Understanding the world

 Expressive arts and design

These give children the broad range of knowledge and skills needed to prepare them for education and future progress through life.

9 Start Active, Stay Active

By taking part in fun classes like Tumble Tots, children develop a positive association with exercise at an early age!

This will encourage them to take part in other activities, sports, and exercise as they grow up, not only keeping them physically healthy but also supporting their emotional health.

Regular exercise helps to lower the risk of developing many long-term conditions and can boost self-esteem, mood, sleep quality, and energy levels, increasing mental health.

10

Essential Skills for Life

The biggest benefit of coming to Tumble Tots is the individual impact on children!

Each child will learn and take away something different that is unique to their personal development needs whether it be physical proficiencies, social skills, cognitive capacities or simply confidence.

These ‘Skills for Life’ will benefit them in other aspects outside the class, at home, when they go to school and in the future, giving them the best start in life.

How to Avoid Parenting Guilt Trips

Some parents feel that whatever they do it’s not quite good enough! They feel guilty for working and missing out on time with the kids. They feel bad about relaxing and doing their own thing. It’s like there’s always something they could be doing to be a better parent, but they never quite achieve it. If this sounds like you, read on.

Guilt is what psychologists call a secondary or self-conscious emotion. We are born experiencing primary emotions such as fear, anger and happiness, but secondary emotions like pride, shame and guilt develop later. To experience them you need to be aware of what other people think of you, which is why they are called self-conscious emotions.

How strong these emotions are for you, and what prompts them, will depend on your upbringing and the attitudes of the social groups to which you belong. The biggest influence is your own family, but larger society also has a bearing.

As a parent you are also guided by an internal ‘schema’, a set of beliefs about what good parenting is. If you don’t conform to this ideal, you may feel bad. One of the issues today’s parents face is that the current ideal of parenting is pretty impossible to attain.

So guilty feelings are normal, and if you never felt guilt at all, you would probably be a bit of a sociopath! You can never be free from it, but you shouldn’t be debilitated by it either. Problems arise when guilt paralyses you, or when you let it influence you without being aware of it. If you are aware of your feelings and understand what triggers them, you can decide what, if anything, you would like to change.

Working through the bad feelings

Emma feels bad about her children sitting in front of the TV for over an hour while she reads the paper. She reacts hurling the paper away, shouting at the kids to stop watching and then switching off the TV. The result? Tantrums or sulking because she switched it off right at the crucial moment.

If Emma had been aware of that nasty little feeling that she wasn’t being a great parent, she might have asked herself: ‘But why do you feel guilty?’ And the answer would probably be that her feelings were compounded of several attitudes all rolled into one:

 TV is a bad thing for children.

 Taking time out to read the paper is selfish.

 Good parents stimulate their children with educationally improving games.

Once aware of the attitudes that triggered her, Emma would be more able to examine them rationally. She might discover that, yes, she does think too much TV is a bad thing. But on the other hand, time out for her is important. And that while stimulating children is good, they also need to be able to entertain themselves.

Armed with this self-knowledge, she might feel more able to sit back, wait for the programme to end and then suggest another activity for the children to do, with or without her. She is no longer being driven by guilt. She regrets that they have watched TV for an hour, but this has prompted her into positive action.

Feeling guilty is a habit that may take time to break. Whatever you do, don't feel guilty about feeling guilty! Instead focus on being a good example to your children, someone who makes positive choices and who takes responsibility for their actions.

Be realistic, and only agree to half of what you could do, that way you will be successful and happy rather than pushing yourself too hard.

Rock-a-bye Baby

5 steps to help your children sleep through the night by Certified Sleep Consultant, Gemma Reynolds

If your baby or toddler is having trouble sleeping through the night, the first thing you should know is... you're not alone!

Studies show that up to 30% of babies have sleep problems, and that 75% of parents would like to change their babies' sleep habits.

The good news is that there are some quick and easy things you can do – starting tonight – to help your little one start sleeping all through the night... and taking long, restful naps during the day!

So, as promised, here they are: The Five Steps to Getting Your Baby to Sleep Through the Night!

Step 1: Choose an early bedtime

The best time to put your baby or toddler to bed is sometime between 6 and 8 o'clock in the evening. This ensures that your child will be able to get a solid 11-13 hours of sleep during the night. (And yes... that is how much sleep children should be getting every night up until the age of about 10.)

Step 2: Put your child to sleep in the same place every night

Whether your child has a room of their own or shares a room with parents or siblings, it's important that you put your son or daughter to sleep in the same place every night (and for naps during the day as much as possible.) Putting your child to bed in a familiar place lets them know they are safe and that they are in a place where sleep is expected of them.

Step 3: Create a predictable bedtime routine Consistency and predictability are really important

24
Health

to babies and toddlers. When they know what to expect at bedtime, it makes it *much* easier for them to make the transition from waking to sleeping – and that's why creating a bedtime routine is so important!

A good example of a bedtime routine might be something like this:

 6:20 p.m. Bath time

 6:35 p.m. Put on pyjamas

 6:40 p.m. Nursing or bottle (NOTE: Do NOT let your child fall asleep while feeding!)

 6:55 p.m. Story or songs

 7:00 p.m. Into cot or bed

Your bedtime routine shouldn't take more than about 45 minutes, and it's VERY important that the routine is the same every single night. The repetition and predictability are what let your child know that he or she will soon be expected to fall asleep.

Step 4: Put your baby to bed AWAKE!

If you've been rocking, nursing, or otherwise soothing your baby to sleep, this is going to seem like a tough one... but it's actually the most important step! It's only by letting your baby fall asleep WITHOUT your help at bedtime that he or she can learn the skills necessary to stay asleep through the night.

Step 5: If your baby wakes up during the night, wait a few minutes before intervening

Everyone – babies and adults alike – will actually wake up several times every night. For most adults, these wakings are so brief that we don't even remember them the next morning. However, many babies will immediately start to fuss or cry when they wake up.

This is simply because they haven't learned how to fall asleep on their own. If a baby has been nursed or rocked to sleep at bedtime since birth,

About the author

it's not surprising that they wouldn't know how to fall asleep independently. The good news is that many babies can figure out how to get back to sleep within just a few minutes of waking up in the night!

If your child continues to fuss or cry for more than a few minutes, you'll want to go in and offer some comfort, but it's important to let your child do the work of falling back to sleep. You can speak softly to your child and do some gentle rubbing or patting, but you should avoid picking your child up and rocking or nursing back to sleep.

So, there you have it... the 5 most important things you need to know about getting your child to sleep through the night. Of course, it's important to keep in mind that every child is a little different –there's no "magic formula" that will work 100% of the time for every baby!

Fuss-Free Cooking for the Whole Family

For many parents, feeding the family healthy, creative, home-cooked meals can be a struggle, particularly with busy schedules and different tastes to navigate.

Double Sunday Times bestselling author, Charlotte Stirling-Reed’s new book How to Feed Your Family tackles this daily challenge of modern life - how to feed the whole family healthy but fuss-free meals. Along with 70 child-friendly recipes, How to Feed Your Family, provides practical support and

Cover all Curry

Curries are a go-to for many families, but it can be tricky when your kids aren’t familiar with hotter, or spicier flavours. This curry is a perfect ease-in – it’s easy to adapt the heat (if you want more spice, add more), but it’s also simple, has a lovely flavour and contains veggies that children usually love! You can easily vary the veggies, of course. This one was a winner with Raffy and has become a firm favourite.

Serves 4

Hands-on time: 10 minutes

Cook time: 22-30 minutes

Ingredients

 1 tbsp vegetable oil

 200ml hot water

 1 white onion, peeled and thinly sliced

 2 garlic cloves, peeled and finely chopped or crushed

 Handful of coriander, stalks finely chopped and leaves reserved for the top, or ½ tbsp dried coriander

 1 carrot, peeled and cut into thin rounds

 300g butternut squash, peeled, deseeded and cut into 2cm chunks

 ½–1 tbsp mild curry powder

 400ml tin coconut milk

 400g tin chickpeas, drained

 100g mangetout, roughly chopped into thirds

To serve

 cooked basmati rice

 natural yoghurt or dairy-free alternative

 lime wedges

nurturing step-by-step guidance to help busy parents manage the juggle of family life, whilst laying down nutritional foundations to support growing children and ourselves.

With our thanks to Charlotte, she has shared three of her favourite recipes with you here to get you started!

Method

➊ Heat the oil in a large frying pan (or wok) over a medium heat, add the onion, garlic, coriander stalks (no tops) and carrot. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

➋ Add the butternut squash and mild curry powder and cook, stirring, for another 5 minutes.

➌ Add the coconut milk, 200ml of hot water and the chickpeas and cook for 15–20 minutes (until the squash is soft and the sauce reduces a little).

➍ Add the mangetout for the final 5 minutes.

➎ Serve with rice, yoghurt dolloped on top and the picked coriander leaves (if you fancy) and a squeeze of lime.

For babies and young children: Blend the sauce with the veggies in a separate bowl, or just make sure you chop those veggies really well for toddlers. You also might want to go a bit easier with the curry powder.

Cheat’s Veggie Lasagne

I love a lasagne, but also find myself not cooking them often because they can take quite a long time. So, I wanted to create a lasagne recipe that was super easy. There is no pre-cooking of individual elements first, and no béchamel, which saves lots of time. If you can grate the vegetables in a food processor it’s even quicker, as this is the only thing that takes a while. It’s also really tasty and has been such a hit with my whole family. You can swap the lasagne sheets for layers of pasta, and I’ve tried it with both fresh and dried lasagne and it works well. This recipe makes loads so you’re bound to have leftovers!

Serves 4 with plenty of leftovers

Hands-on time: 20 minutes

Cook time: 30-40 minutes

Ingredients

 1 garlic clove, crushed or finely grated

 2 carrots, peeled and coarsely grated

 1 or 2 sweet potatoes (about 300g), coarsely grated

 2 x 400g tins chopped tomatoes

 1 tbsp dried oregano

 250g pre-cooked lentils e.g., puy or green lentils

 600g cottage cheese or dairy-free alternative

 150g grated mozzarella, plus 40g for sprinkling on top (or dairy-free alt)

 200g packet of fresh lasagne sheets (dried work too, but might take a little longer to cook)

 steamed greens or a simple salad, to serve

Method

➊ Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan.

➋ Get a large bowl and add the grated veg (garlic, carrots, sweet potato) then tip in the tinned tomatoes, dried oregano and lentils. Give it a good mix and pop to one side.

➌ In another bowl mix the cottage cheese and 150g of the grated mozzarella.

➍ Spoon a third of the tomato and lentil mix into an ovenproof dish or tin (about 20 x 30cm), then lay down the lasagne sheets. Top with 4 heaped tablespoons (about a third) of the cottage cheese mix, spreading it right to the sides, then add another third of the tomato and lentil mix, then

more lasagne sheets and another third of the creamy mix. Finish with a third layer of lasagne sheets and the remaining creamy mix and a little extra cheese for the top.

➎ Bake in the oven for 30–40 minutes or until golden and bubbling. Serve with steamed greens or a simple salad

For babies and young children: babies who are still experimenting with solid foods may need this to be lightly blended. Or you could roll up the lasagne sheets and give the sauce a little blend. But older babies will probably be happy to play with and dissect this a little and eat some with their hands and some off a spoon. Let them explore.

Baked Banana Bars

I LOVE an on-the-go brekkie idea and these porridge bars have been SUCH a hit with my kids. They work great as a snack as well, and are very easy to put together. They take a little time on the cooking front, but next to no time to prep, and are well worth it. They freeze well so are perfect for batch-cooking, and you can vary what you make them with according to what you have in your fridge.

Makes 24 small squares or 12 bars

Hands-on time: 5 minutes

Cook time: 45-55 minutes

Ingredients

 100g porridge oats

 180ml milk of choice

 2 large, very ripe bananas (around 200g in total)

 85g sultanas (or raisins, chopped dates, chopped dried apricots)

 1/2 tsp mixed spice (or ground cinnamon or nutmeg)

 3 tbsp mixed seeds (ground for babies/toddlers

Method

➊ Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°C fan and line a 20cm square shallow baking tin with non-stick baking paper. Mix all the ingredients together (except the seeds), then mash it well with a fork to completely break up the bananas. Once everything is well mixed, scoop it into the baking tin and level the top. Sprinkle the mixed seeds on top (leave off or grind if serving to babies and young children).

➋ Bake for 50–55 minutes, until the top is golden and crisp. Once cooked, remove from the tin using the baking paper and leave to cool on a rack until either warm or cooled to room temperature.

➌ Slice into 24 small squares, or 12 larger bars to serve. The bars will keep in an airtight container for up to 3 days, or can be wrapped in cling film/ beeswax and frozen individually, then defrosted on the counter overnight ready for the morning. You can also reheat them uncovered in a microwave for 30 seconds if you’d like them warm.

For babies and young children: They should be okay with the texture of these as soon as they have moved on to slightly more complex finger foods. Avoid whole seeds, offer them ground instead, or simply leave them off any of the bars/ squares that are for your baby/toddler.

How to wean your baby without the waste

Jennifer Unsworth, founder of Tidy Tot, explains how we can cut out the food waste created by Baby Led Weaning and offers members an exclusive 15% discount!

With food prices at record highs, and every one of us feeling the pinch of rising bills, reducing the amount of food we waste at mealtimes has never been more important. Despite our best efforts, the equivalent of 8 meals per week are thrown away by UK households as wasted food – a huge proportion of which is simply down to cooking, preparing or serving too much. Food Surplus and Waste in the UK Key Facts, WRAP 2021.

It’s no comfort to parents then that higher levels of food waste are associated with having young children in the home, and if you factor in the food that’s lost to the floor – which can be as high as 80% of meal for a weaning baby– the amount of wasted food, and money, is eye watering.

Baby weaning brand Tidy Tot is passionate about finding ways to help, and in March this year launched their Wean Without Waste Campaign, aimed at helping parents to reduce food waste and save money.

Jennifer Unsworth, company founder and inventor told us “ Baby Led Weaning in particular can create huge amounts of food waste, and yet the developmental and emotional benefits of weaning this way mean that it’s the method of choice for a lot of parents. We want to support parents to enjoy the journey of weaning with their little ones without the worry of food waste and all the mess it creates”

Baby Led Weaning

Baby Led Weaning, or ‘BLW’ as it is commonly referred to, is an approach to introducing solid food where babies feed themselves rather than being spoon-fed as with traditional weaning. Baby Led Weaning gives babies control over what they eat and how much.

Jennifer goes on to explain “I invented the Bib & Tray Kit when weaning my daughter as I just couldn’t bear all the mess that weaning entailed! I wanted all

36
Advertorial

the benefits of Baby-Led Weaning – letting her explore and discover foods and learn all the crucial skills to self-feed – but the thought of cleaning up all the mess after each meal, the stained clothes and the wasted food, just filled me with dread”.

The Tidy Tot Bib & Tray Kit

Comprising a large sensory food tray that effectively stops food falling to floor and a detachable long sleeve coverall bib to ‘catch’ food and fully protect clothes, the Tidy Tot Bib & Tray Kit is heralded globally for its unrivalled ability to make weaning mess free, easy and enjoyable.

Market tested over a period of 1,386 mealtimes in February this year, 100% of parents agreed the Bib & Tray Kit prevented food waste, with 79% saying it allowed them to reduce the amount of money they spent on food by at least 50p a day. In fact, over half said it and allowed them to serve less food on baby’s plate as they were no longer compensating for food lost to the floor, and the amount of money they saved was at least £1 day. At just £32 a set, the Bib & Tray Kit would pay for itself in wasted food in just over 4 weeks!

Tidy Tot’s Bib & Tray Kit has long been recognised by Baby Led Weaning experts internationally as being a great tool for making the practice more accessible, including by BLW pioneers Gill Rapley and Tracy Murkett. But what is it about Baby Led Weaning that makes it such a desirable choice?

“The amount of research into Baby Led Weaning is certainly growing, but we already understand that it supports fine motor skill development and encourages positive relationships with food right from the off”. Tidy Tot designed the Bib & Tray Kit with this in mind – keeping the sensory tray light in colour and free from patterns to support early hand-eye co-ordination, and large enough to keep food within babies grasp and off the floor, with a raised, lipped edge. Not 0nly does the lipped tray ease frustration as food is kept within bay’s grasp, but it keeps food off the floor and makes the mealtime clean-up much easier – saving over 10 minutes per meal in clean-up time.

Less Stress, Less Mess!

As well as making mealtimes more enjoyable, easier and less stressful, almost all parents who used the Bib & Tray Kit (94%) said they felt happier offering messier, more sensory rich meals when using it than without. “Being able to support parents in making positive food choices for their babies whilst helping to make cleaning up after mealtimes that little bit easier is everything I wanted to achieve when I first came up with the concept of the Bib & Tray Kit” says Jennifer.

Exclusive 15% discount for Tumble Tots members!

The Tidy Tot Bib & Tray Kit is sold worldwide and is available at www.tidytot.com. Bibs are machine washable and available to buy separately.

Tidy Tot is offering Tumble Tot members an exclusive 15% discount site wide with code TT15. You can Mix & Match any 3 products for the price of 2 and receive a free silicone suction plate or bowl when you spend over £45.

FROM SMALL STEPS

Your child is amazing, on an incredible journey of growth. Between the ages of one to seven their physical experiences will become their bedrock for a lifetime relationship with movement.

To get the best start, young children must be able to move freely, explore movement and build confidence in their body’s natural ability. Their shoes are fundamental to this process.

Ill-fitting shoes can manipulate the soft cartilage in a child’s foot and if a child’s shoes cause them to walk unnaturally, their brain can make adjustments for what it perceives the child’s body cannot do. This can affect their walking style and potentially lead to a lifetime of physical problems.

Barefoot is best before a child starts walking, but once they find their feet, they need the correct level of comfort and support from their shoes to build their confidence and find their freedom.

Top tips for shopping for children’s shoes

1. Little feet taking their first steps will grow every 6-8 weeks.

2. No one size fits all. To be confident you are buying the right size shoes for your child, you can either measure their feet at home with the brand’s foot gauge or visit a local Start-Rite stockist.

3. Get to know the shape of your child’s foot. Their personal shape will suit some styles but not others. Knowing which styles to select from will save you hours in the long run.

4. Getting your child’s shoes fitted will save you money. Ill-fitting shoes will rub and wear out much sooner.

Start-Rite - 230 years leading the shoe industry

In the early 1900’s Start-Rite discovered that children need different shaped shoes to adults. They pioneered child shaped Lasts, multi-width fittings, half sizes and shoes with growing room, symbolised by a ‘stiffer’ heel that holds the foot in place to help with balance and growth.

These early innovations are still present in Start-Rite’s shoes alongside new cutting-edge designs to make the most supportive and durable children’s footwear available in the UK today.

Biomechanical soles and shapes, flexibility and fastenings are designed for the stage of the child’s development. Breathable linings, technology that improves airflow, moulded toe and heel bumpers and dyed through leather all contribute to keeping the shoes in tip top condition. Start-Rite makes intelligent shoes designed for the demands of children today.
