Early Years Development with Tidy Tot

The first 5 years of your baby’s life are the building blocks for their lifelong development. The foundations of your baby’s physical, emotional, social, cognitive and language development skills for life are laid down in these first 5 years.

Here we introduce five key child stages of development, along with some practical toys and equipment suitable for each stage, that can help you to support your child ‘s development in a fun and healthy way! Whilst every child develops at their own pace, this guide will give you an idea of what to look out for.

5 Key Early Years Development Stages and equipment you’ll find helpful

0-6 months

So much growing! Your baby starts to smile, recognise your voice and begins to sit unaided. Innate ‘survival’ behaviours, such as the Rooting Reflex (where baby seeks out the breast to start to feed) start to disappear, but some remain – such as a dislike of having mouths and noses covered. Wash Mitts –our mitt shaped design allows for more controlled wiping than a cloth of flannel, helping to reduce tears at wash-time as mouths and noses are not covered simultaneously.

 6-12

months

You’re ready to start weaning! Your baby’s pincer grip develops and he will indicate wants through gestures and pointing. He will reach for things with a sweeping motion (cue food being swiped to the floor!) and grasping at spoons whilst being fed.

Bib & Tray Kit –The large sensory tray stops food being deliberately swept or dropped off the highchair to the floor

Cover & Catch Bib – A compact coverall for mealtimes out and about

 12 – 18 months

Imitation and imagination are at the heart of this kick in! Fussiness around food is normal at this

stage, so using all your baby’s senses to explore new foods and textures becomes really important.

Bib & Tray Kit – Use for sensory play, arts and crafts and sensory food exploration

Wash Mitts – Let baby clean up with you, and try wiping their own faces, with our cute baby sized mitts!

 18-24 months

Walking, running and playing has taken on a new energy! Make believe and pretend play are central themes.

Long Length Coverall – use as a painting apron or feeding coverall for toddlers that just can’t keep still!

 Visit www.tidytot.co.uk and get an exclusive 15% discount on all these Tidy Tot products using code TUMBLE15 

 24-36 months and beyond

Really growing up! Your toddler is learning all the time from what’s going on around them. Eating together and making healthy choices yourself will really support their development.

Snack & Doodle – for creative snack times on the go and prefect for busy days out

Our Programme

Our programme aims to develop children's 'Skills for Life'. It helps them grow into confident adults, that understand and enjoy the importance of leading healthy active lifestyles.

At your first class, you will have experienced a fraction of the potential that Tumble Tots has to offer your child in the future.

Today’s equipment is only a small part of the apparatus and the layout is changed every two weeks (six weeks for 6 MonthsWalking).

This gives us the opportunity to concentrate on different skills and to intensify the challenges as the children develop within the programme.

Age Groups:

 6 Months - Walking

 Walking - 2 Years

 2 - 3 Years

 3 Years - School Age

 Gymbobs (School Age - 7 Years)

The basic philosophy is to ‘build selfconfidence’ through the development of the child’s physical learning. This is achieved by focusing on four important areas:

 General motor skills

 Social awareness

 Self assurance

 Self discipline

They gain this through:

 A structured development programme

 Ongoing challenges

 A fun and happy atmosphere

 Well trained and enthusiastic staff

 A safe environment

Top Tips in the Classes

 When your child receives their membership pack, encourage them to wear their t-shirt in classes to feel part of the club!

 Before you leave and in the case of severe weather conditions, please check your text messages, emails, our website or Facebook page for closures.

 Please dress children in suitable clothing to allow for better movement and avoid jewellery, dummies or any clothing that can catch on the equipment or cause injury.

 Barefoot is best (and safest) for children as this helps with their development. Grownups can wear shoes if they aren’t high heels or heavy boots as these can hurt small fingers or toes.

 Please take your child to the toilet before classes begin to save interruption (this is especially important for the over 3’s classes).

 If you need to bring a sibling along to class, please be aware that they are unable to participate or play on the equipment as they will not be covered by insurance. We recommend bringing something to occupy them such as a book or colouring.

 Make sure you arrive in plenty of time and register your child at the desk.

 Parents are fully responsible for their children in the under 3’s classes. We ask that you work directly with your child, encouraging and assisting where necessary. Support your child by holding the back of their T-Shirt so their hands are free for climbing and to aid balance.

 In the over 3’s classes, grown-ups are not actively involved but must always remain on the premises.

 Children are asked not to eat or drink on the equipment but if they need refreshments, you are welcome to take them to the waiting area.

 Please do not take any photographs or videos during the classes and refrain from using mobile phones so your child has your full attention.

 Do not let children onto the equipment before or after classes. Please move to the waiting area so we can set-up safely for the next class.

Objectives & Benefits

Our progressive play programme is designed to develop your child’s physical skills. Using bespoke colourful equipment, we focus on agility, balance, climbing and co-ordination, which enhances brain development and builds confidence.

Every session is supervised by our amazing specially trained staff, getting the best out of each child. Up until 3 years, grown-ups participate as well so that parents, carers and even grandparents can spend time with little ones as they develop.

The journey begins for babies from 6 months old who can sit up unaided. Here’s how our classes break down:

6 Months – Walking

Babies explore the equipment in a happy and relaxed environment. This enhances their brain development and helps them to reach key milestones such as crawling, cruising and walking, taking them onto the next class.

Walking – 2 Years

Confidently walking toddlers are now introduced to an exciting circuit of equipment as well as hand held co-ordination activities, developing their fine motor skills. ‘Circle Time’ helps language development through rhymes and action songs.

2 – 3 Years

Working together in small groups, little ones are introduced to stations with more challenging equipment to refine their agility, balance and climbing skills. Following instructions and learning to take turns develops their listening and social skills, as well as confidence.

3 Years – School Age*

Children now take part independently without their grownup, putting into practice their skills for life. Our staff challenge each child individually to their full potential, preparing them for school, physically, socially and mentally.

Gymbobs (School Age – 7 Years)*

Gymbobs is the pinnacle class of Tumble Tots, bringing together everything children have learnt so far! Using challenging equipment setups, relay races, team games and warm-up exercises, Gymbobs is a perfect addition to a child’s school P.E. provision.

*For the 3 Years – School Age and Gymbobs (School Age – 7 Years) classes, parents must remain on site.

Cycling with your Children

Dawn Rahman, a PhD student at the University of Westminster, has been researching mothers who cycle with their young children in the UK. Whilst levels of cycling are still considered low compared with some of our European neighbours such as The Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden, the number of mothers using cargo cycles, tagalongs and trailers, as well as children riding their own bicycles appear to be growing in the UK. Here Dawn shares some of her findings.

As part of my research, I have carried out several focus groups with women who work in cycling, surveyed approximately 1,300 mothers and undertaken 30 in-depth interviews with mothers who firmly believe bike is best.

Barriers to cycling with kids

The most popular journeys undertaken by bicycle were to educations sites such as schools and nurseries, followed by using their bikes for shopping and errands as well as visiting friends and families. Unfortunately, many of the mothers noted certain barriers when cycling, such as bad driving and aggression from other road users. Just under a quarter of mothers surveyed had experienced close passes from drivers and more than a third had suffered from verbal abuse when cycling with their children. Similarly, other barriers such as guard rails, A-frames and steps on traffic free paths also often made simple journeys more complicated, particularly for those using nonstandard cycles which struggle to fit through such barriers.

Huge benefits

However, despite some of these issues, there was an overwhelming sense that cycling with children was deemed a positive and worthwhile activity to undertake. Many of the mothers taking part in the research listed the countless benefits they had found from riding with their children. These included improved health, both mental and physical. The confidence their children gained from learning the skills to ride a bicycle, plus the sheer joy and fun that they had whilst cycling together. Moreover, many of the mothers cycling with their children, firmly believed cycling allowed them to form emotional bonds with their children and hopefully build lifetime memories.

Interestingly, even ‘bad’ weather conditions didn’t prevent the majority of mothers from cycling, with the exception of icy conditions. As long as children were wrapped up for cold temperatures, or suitably dressed for rain they were okay to cycle. Indeed, cycling throughout the year, was also highlighted as a beneficial way to teach young children about the seasons. For instance, looking out for the first snowdrops and daffodils to pop up in spring and stopping to pick up conkers in autumn.

How to get started

For many families wanting to start cycling with their children, it can often be confusing where to look for information. A quick search on the internet and it is apparent that there is an overwhelming number of different types of cycling equipment to be used for cycling with children. Trying to decide what will best suit a family’s needs is tricky, particularly if you are choosing a cycle which will carry your children as passengers, as the weigh distribution and handling of child carrying cycles can take a little while to get used to. Similarly, the prices for some cycle configurations such as cargo cycles, can be rather eye-watering for someone considering dipping their toes into cycling. With prices ranging from £1,000 -£5,000 upwards. Choosing the wrong type of equipment could

INTRODUCING THE TRIKE FAMILY HYBRID FROM

prove an expensive mistake! Luckily, due to the increasing numbers of families cycling with their children over the past few years, there is now a great second hand market available, which helps make purchasing equipment more affordable.

Helpful resources

If you are thinking of giving cycling a go with your children, two of the most useful resources available online to help you make the right decision are the Cycle Sprog website (www.cyclesprog.co.uk) and the Family Cycling UK Facebook group. Both provide useful information on the different types of equipment on offer, with reviews from other parents offering pros and cons such as costs, how much space is needed to store them at home, what age children they can be used with and lots of other useful information.

New Era of Mobility

Trike Hybrid from CUBE has been developed in collaboration with BMW. The three-wheeled Trike Hybrid is built around a front main frame that leans into corners independently of the rear section. An innovative tilting mechanism and supported with a 4th generation BOSCH Drive Unit Cargo Line Smart System and 750 WH battery will give you a new experience of mobility.

The Trike Family Hybrid, designed specifically to cater to families, offers a flexible and safe way to carry one or two children as well as shopping or other items.

This is the future of people carriers: compact, safe and emission-free. With its custom-designed seat and seatbelts, you can leave the car behind!

CUBE’S ONE SIZE concept allows a wide variety of riders from around 5ft 2in to 6ft 2in to safely use the Trike Hybrid.

Your kids will love coming along for the ride in the Trike Family Hybrid. There's room for two child seats with comfortable padding and five point seat belts. A rain canopy keeps the worst of the weather at bay, and, with Bosch power providing pedal assistance, the ride is smooth and easy.

How to Take Better Care of Yourself...

...and embrace not being perfect!

Psychotherapist, parent and best-selling author Anna Mathur’s new book, Raising a Happier Mother, sets out to explain why looking after and forgiving ourselves first and foremost enables us to be a better parent, role model and guardian. Anna explains that self-care isn’t selfish, it is vital that we thrive so we can be our best selves for those who need us most – our children.

In this extract from the book, Anna describes a scene every one of us will be all too familiar with, although her reaction and ‘light bulb’ moment may surprise many. Raising a Happier Mother by Anna Mathur is published by Penguin Life (£16.99).

“I was in town with three overtired kids. One child was devastated because he’d finished his ice cream first, and the envy of seeing the others still enjoying theirs was too much to bear. My three-year- old was face down, tantruming on the pavement, and my eldest was standing by bewildered at the scene. I couldn’t carry the shopping and my daughter, so I failed to usher them towards the car.

I had no choice but to surrender to the chaos, take a seat on the dusty pavement and wait for the storm to pass. I felt the gazes of people walking by even though I didn’t look anyone in the eye. Perhaps they were looks of empathy, perhaps judgement. Most likely there was a mixture of both.

23 Advice

The crying and the tantrums ran their course, and off we continued back to the car. As I reflected on this, I thought how much energy I’d have usually spent on trying to ‘fix’ or control the situation, when actually it resolved itself. When we try to apply our perfectionism to the inevitable moments of stormy chaos in parenting, we can completely exhaust ourselves. That’s the thing with storms – they pass without our input. We just have to wait it out. I decided I would try to trust a little more, and attempt to control the uncontrollable a little less.

The challenge is that so many things about motherhood are entirely out of our control. We cannot control what others do, or what thoughts come into our minds or theirs. We cannot control the weather, or when we or those we care for get unwell. To seek perfection is to deny humanness.

Of course, it is healthy to desire and seek control in some ways. For example, I like to control my bedtime routine to ensure I give myself the opportunity to wind down at the end of the day. However, I cannot control the moment I fall asleep. I like to implement my kids’ morning routine so that I drop them off at school and nursery in time, but I cannot control the fact that one of them might need the toilet or lose a shoe and have us running late as a result. Seeking a little control over our environment, within reason, can help us feel confident and help things move smoothly. But when we find ourselves anxious, stressed or uncomfortable if things aren’t going how we wanted them to go, or meeting the high standards we set, then this acts as a little flag to tell us we might need to find some fresh acceptance. For example, my client Fiona had a set routine for her son’s homeschooling which worked well to support them as they moved through the work she gave him. However, she found it very anxiety- provoking and stressful when something interrupted that flow, such as an illness or unscheduled visitor.

I’ve always found that a lot of my stress and anxiety is caused by the desire to control the things I cannot. Can you identify with this too? Think about how the more you try to control the moment you fall asleep, the harder sleep is to come by. And the more you try to control a routine, the more stressful it will feel when it is disrupted. It’s a hard balance to attain, but recognizing what you can control and at the same time choosing consciously to cultivate a little more acceptance in those moments you can’t control, creates more of an allowance for humanness and the unpredictability of life.

I encourage you to start to notice when your shoulders tense, when that self- critical voice gets louder or when feelings of failure or disappointment in yourself begin to rise up like a swelling tide. Are they perhaps prompted by the falling off of that tightrope of perfectionism and control?

With our thanks to Anna and Penguin Life.

We Are NOT “Soft Play” If anything, we are HARD PLAY!

There isn’t an easy way to describe exactly what Tumble Tots is or does in one word, one phrase or even one sentence, but we definitely aren’t “soft play”. There is nothing wrong with “soft play”, as any physical play is good for children’s development, but we are so much more than that...

27
Tumble Tots
Explore the full range of wipe-clean activity and interactive board books! Explore now! Resources, guidance and audio can be found at www.learnwithpeppa.com

Yes, we use some foam equipment in our classes (which might look like “soft play”), but this is more like the equipment little ones use in formal gymnastics, and our equipment doesn’t stop there! We also have wooden and handheld equipment, all of which have been specially designed, bespoke to Tumble Tots, to help pre-school children develop their fundamental movement skills of agility, balance, climbing and co-ordination (so you won’t find it at any other children’s activity!)

Classes are led by trained staff and unlike “soft play”, grown-ups are actively involved, (don’t worry, we don’t expect adults to crawl through the tunnels!) This gives parents a chance to work with, bond with, and watch their child develop each week and for little ones to begin socialising with other adults as well as children.

Each class is structured and designed to suit the age of members attending (so your little one will never be squished in the ball pit by bigger children), and as they progress in age, skills and development stages, they move up a class to take on bigger challenges.

Children are also taught to take turns (rather than pushing each other down the slide), listen and follow instructions, remember and repeat activities, develop language and communication skills through action songs and rhymes, another reason why we are not “soft play”.

If anything, we are HARD PLAY! We take play seriously, we work and play hard in our classes, staff, parents and carers included, and believe our programme is not just fun but essential for wellrounded development.

We provide the necessary skills for a child’s next steps in life, whether this is another activity or simply helping to build confidence.

Each and every child takes something different away from our classes, so to get your little one involved, please visit: www.tumbletots.com

High on a misty mountainside, red panda cubs Popo and Ketu live happily with their mama. As the sisters grow, they promise that they will ALWAYS stay close to home and look out for each other. But while Popo is content to stay in the family's cosy treetop nest, bold Ketu dreams of excitement and exploration. And so when Ketu creeps off down the mountain in search of adventure, Popo must make a choice: will she keep her promise to Mama, or go after her sister?

The Pandas Who Promised is an epic adventure with a heartwarming message about the importance of openness and honesty, especially between a parent and children. This is the latest picture book tale in the bestselling The Lion Inside series, from The World of Rachel Bright and Jim Field.

A laugh-out-loud tale about friendship and sharing. Perfect for competitive friends and sibling rivals!

This game is bound to have children laughing and enjoying times tables as they toss their pancakes high into the sky!

Alphabet Lotto

With 4 ways to play, this game can be used for a wide range of abilities and ages! Match picture to picture, picture to letter, letter to picture or letter to letter to help learn the letters of the alphabet in this fun lotto game! Children are encouraged to sound out the letters or words as they create them, developing their phonics skills.

Mucky Trucks

Created for children to develop their colour recognition and turn taking skills in this engaging vehicle themed game! Players race to be the first to get their mucky trucks clean. Roll the dice and move the elephant playing piece around the car wash playing board. Land on a colour, and make the corresponding-coloured truck sparkly clean, land on a mud splat and bad luck your truck becomes dirty again! Designed for ages 3+

Match and Spell

This fun, first reading and spelling game encourages letter recognition, teaches phonetic word building and promotes matching of pictures and words. There are two ways to play, and the game is designed for both guided and independent word building. Children will begin by matching the letter cards to the letters shown on their board in the correct order to build a word. As children become more familiar with the letter sounds, they will use the letter cards to build the word of the picture shown onto the blank side of the board.

Match and Spell Next Steps

This is an excellent follow-on from the best-selling Match and Spell game. Match and Spell Next Steps develops reading and spelling skills using sounds and blends. With double-sided boards to extend learning this game is played by building a variety of familiar and more advanced words, with the help of colourful illustrations to identify words.

Have you been introduced to R129?

What you need to know about the newest car seat safety standard

The R129 car seat safety standard is designed to simplify the selection process and further protect our children, so there’s a few key considerations with R129 car seats to be aware of.

R129 is considered the safest standard, with rigorous side impact testing for improved head and neck protection. It requires children to be reward facing for longer, until at least 15 months old. As parents and carers, the most significant change you’ll need to be aware of when it comes to selecting a car seat is that it’s based on your child’s height alone, which means it should be simpler to get the right seat to suit your child’s development stage.

How parents are feeling

To better support parents, Graco recently undertook research with Mother & Baby, First Time Mums and The Mum Club, talking to a wide range of parents about car seat safety standards and their experience of travelling by car with their children. What’s clear is that no one is in this alone.

Only a quarter of readers of Mother & Baby are confident they know what the different car seat safety standards mean, 81% of followers of First Time Mums admitted to feeling nervous taking the very first car journey with their baby, and not just that, 40% of them felt anxious.

S.A.F.E Journeys

Graco has proudly been keeping children safe in its car seats for over 60 years and now, to help parents and carers understand and easily remember the R129 standard, Graco has brought new meaning to the word safe.

S – Size of your child.

R129 car seat compatibility is measured by the length, or height of the child.

A – Advanced Side Impact Protection.

It is standard that all R129 car seats must have side impact testing. R129 car seats have improved reinforced frames to protect the child in the event of a collision.

F – Fitting formulas

Ensure the car seat fits your car.

E – Extended rearward facing

Extended rearward facing until a minimum of 15 months old. At Graco, we recommend rearward travel till 4 years of age for the best protection to the child’s neck and spine.
