legendary champion baloubet du rouet 1989 - 2017 The legendary Sela Francesa (Selle Français) stallion “Baloubet Du Rouet” has passed away after almost 12 years of retirement in Portugal, at the age of 28. Baloubet, the three-time World Cup Champion (1998, 1999, 2000) and two-time Olympic medalist (team bronze 2000, individual gold 2004), was one of the best stallions to ever grace equestrian sport. Retired from showjumping since 2006, Baloubet participated in 263 international competitions, retiring with an impressive 65 winning titles to his name. Baloubet, owned by D. Diogo Pereira Coutinho of Portugal, was first ridden by Brazilian Olympic Champion Nelson Pessoa. The two conquered the New Horses World Championship for 6-year-olds (finalist) and 7-year-olds (champion) at Fontainebleau in France. After the 1998 World Equestrian Games in Rome, Nelson Pessoa passed the horse along to his son Rodrigo Pessoa. In 1998, 1999, and 2000, the new team was World Cup Champion three times in a row; Baloubet is the only horse to accomplish this fete—ever. Rodrigo and Baloubet went on to become Olympic Champions at Athens in 2004. In total, the stallion participated in 263 international championships, winning 65 contests before taking a well-deserved retirement in Portugal at age 17. On his official website, his former rider paid homage: “You arrived a spoiled five-year old child, but showed a great potential in your first jump. The beginning was not easy, yet you were so smart that you understood it all quickly. You grew up to become one of the greatest horses in history. Talent, beauty, energy, strength, skill and elegance made you the best.” — Rodrigo Pessoa. As a stallion, Baloubet’s influence reaches well outside South America into Europe. He is licensed in the Selle Français, Belgian Warmblood, Holsteiner, and Hanoverian stud books. Baloubet left an important legacy in the world of equestrian sports through his descendants.
