Leader / Boss The boss drives his men; the leader coaches them. The boss depends on good will; the leader depends on good will. The boss inspires fear; the leader inspires enthusiasm. The boss says "I"; the leader says "We." The boss assigns tasks; the leader sets the pace. The boss says "Get here on time!"; the leader gets there ahead of time. The boss fixes blame for the breakdown; the leader fixes the breakdown. The boss knows how it's done; the leader shows how. The boss makes work a drudgery; the leader makes it a game. The boss says "Go!"; the leader says "Let's go!" The world needs leaders, but nobody wants a boss. (inputs from Ms. Sheela Mistry-Insight Associates)

Nurture Great Ideas

Gretchen and I were discussing the agenda for the strategic planning session later that day. “Well, you won’t hear me saying anything,” she said. Several years before Gretchen, had tried to share an idea at such a meeting of the same group only to have her idea ridiculed by a senior executive in front of everyone. She was so humiliated by the experience that she vowed to never share another idea with that group again. At some point in your life, you have probably had an experience like Gretchen’s where you shared an idea with a group of people and received a response that was embarrassing or discouraging. That experience may have been so bad that it made you doubt your ability to think of great ideas altogether. No matter how many bad experiences you’ve had in sharing your ideas with others, you should never forget that many people who have made a big impact in the world only did so after having their ideas frequently rejected. Years ago, I heard a successful entrepreneur say that his business idea was rejected 35 different times by banks and venture capitalists before he finally received financing support. The business eventually became such a success that it was later purchased by a large international corporation for millions of dollars. It is often the most powerful ideas that attract the most resistance and the greatest skepticism. Although you might not see yourself as a creative person, everyone has great ideas. But very few people have the discipline to share and act on their great ideas and then have the courage to defend and protect them until they become implemented. Outstanding leaders listen and read carefully for thoughts that might inspire ideas. Once they have a great idea they value and nurture it. They have the courage to freely and fully share their ideas. They bravely take criticism, rejection and ridicule when they express their ideas because they know the greatest ideas often seem strange and horrible to others at first. What are you doing with your great ideas? Are many of your ideas quickly lost because you don’t write them down? Do you have the discipline to share and act on your ideas and then the courage to defend and protect them when they meet resistance? Are you willing to endure resistance and criticism long enough to see your most powerful ideas implemented? This week, begin nurturing great ideas. Realize that you can be just as creative as any other person if you will only listen and read carefully and regularly write down your thoughts. Have the courage to share your ideas with others even if they might seem crazy at first. You never know which strange idea might revolutionize your life if you will only be persistent in sharing, defending and protecting it. Just one great idea can completely revolutionize your life. -- Earl Nightingale (inputs from Mr. Mukesh Mehta, Heubach Colour)

☺ 10 commandments for 'working hard'

Never walk without a document in your hands. People with documents in their hands look like hardworking employees heading for important meetings. People with nothing in their hands look like they're heading for the cafeteria. People with a newspaper in their hand look like they're heading for the toilet. Above all, make sure you carry loads of stuff home with you at night, thus generating the false impression that you work longer hours than you do. Use computers to look busy. Any time you use a computer, it looks like "work" to the casual observer. You can send and receive personal e-mail, chat and generally have a blast without doing anything remotely related to work. These aren't exactly the societal benefits that the proponents of the computer revolution would like to talk about but they're not bad either. When you get caught by your boss -- and you will get caught -- your best defence is to claim you're teaching yourself to use new software, thus saving valuable training dollars. Have a messy desk. Top management can get away with a clean desk. For the rest of us, it looks like we're not working hard enough. Build huge piles of documents around your workspace. To the observer, last year's work looks the same as today's work; it's volume that counts. Pile them high and wide. If you know somebody is coming to your cubicle, bury the document you'll need halfway down in an existing stack and rummage for it when he/she arrives. Never answer your phone if you have voice mail. People don't call you just because they want to give you something for nothing -- they call because they want YOU to do work for THEM. That's no way to live. Screen all your calls through voice mail. If somebody leaves a voice mail message for you and it sounds like impending work, respond during lunch hour when you know they're not there -- it looks like you're hardworking and conscientious even though you're being a devious weasel. Looking impatient and annoyed. One should also always try to look impatient and annoyed to give your bosses the impression that you are always busy. Leave the office late. Always leave the office late, especially when the boss is still around. You could read magazines and storybooks that you always wanted to read but have no time for until late before leaving. Make sure you walk past the boss' room on your way out. Be sure to send important e-mail at unearthly hours (e.g. 9:35pm, 7:05am, etc.) and during public holidays. Sigh loudly for effect. Do this when there are many people around, giving the impression that you are under extreme pressure. Develop a stacking strategy. It is not enough to pile lots of documents on the table. Put lots of books on the floor etc. (thick computer manuals are the best). Build your vocabulary. Read up on some computer magazines and pick out all the jargon and new products. Use the phrases freely when in conversation with bosses. Remember: They don't have to understand what you say, but you sure sound impressive. MOST IMPORTANT: DON'T let this READ to your boss by mistake! Page 4 of 5
