Summer is in full swing! There are many ways for you to enjoy the longer days at Munson. While our version of the “Big Dig” is underway across the front lawn, don’t be fooled; there is plenty going on inside the Museum and around campus all summer long.

COVER
If you haven’t already signed up for a Community Arts class, check out the diverse offerings. My daughter and I are taking a class this summer as a way to spend some time together trying something new and escaping into a creative setting away from the day-to-day.
The annual Arts Festival is fast approaching–July 13 through 21–with the Munson Classic Car Show kicking it off on Saturday, July 13. The Sidewalk Art Show will be located in the Museum’s Root Court this year. If you’ve never attended the Big Ol’ Steamrollin’ event, I highly encourage you to join the fun. Artists from across our community carve large-format wood blocks that are inked, then the images are printed on cloth via an actual steamroller. It’s a terrific community event with children’s activities, a DJ, and lots of creative fun.
If you missed the festive opening reception for American Landscapes, don’t wait to visit the exhibition. It is truly stunning, and you will want to visit more than once. To help you take advantage of this opportunity, we have added evening hours on Wednesdays, keeping the Museum open until 7:30.
While enjoying the beautiful weather, attending special events, and fitting in time in my garden, my favorite part of summer is family time, no matter what we are doing. At Munson, employees are able to start the weekends a bit early with summer Friday hours from June 14 to Aug. 16 when we close offices at 3 p.m. (the Museum remains open until 5).
Whether it’s a ceramics class, a kids program or concert during the Arts Festival, a Wednesday evening at the Museum, or a trip to Munson with out-of-town family and friends anytime, I hope you will enjoy all of the diverse activities taking place this summer.
All best wishes to you for a relaxing, enjoyable summer filled with the arts. I look forward to seeing you in the studios or in the galleries.

CURATOR'S CORNER
MUNSON ON THE ROAD
Recently, Munson’s two extraordinary masterworks by 20th-century artist Mark Rothko returned to Munson after an acclaimed showing in the artist’s retrospective held at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris. Deemed a “revelatory,” “once-in-a-lifetime” event, the exhibition of over 100 pivotal paintings in Rothko’s career broke all attendance records, allowing these works from the Munson collection to be seen by over 1.5 million visitors!
Now, our Rothkos are back in the second floor Modern and Contemporary Gallery displayed in conversation with Philip Guston’s The Porch II (1947), which has also returned from a triumphal exhibition tour, and Jackson Pollock’s Number 2, 1949, which has been moved upstairs in a new installation.
Meanwhile, Munson’s beautiful Georgia O’Keeffe, Pelvis with Pedernal (1943), will be shown at the MFA, Boston, in October after stops in San Diego, Albuquerque, and Montreal, and the Giorgio De Chirico, Le Regret (1916), will be on view in Glens Falls, N.Y., at the Hyde Collection throughout this summer, extending Munson’s outreach across North America.
– Stephen Harrison, Director and Chief Curator
NEW ACQUISITION
The Museum of Art recently acquired a painting titled Ant on His Patio, 2024, by artist Gerald Lovell (American, born 1992). The portrait is a life-sized image of Lovell’s friend, Anthony, tending to a grill on a deck in a leafy backyard setting. Lovell has created a series of similar paintings that depict other acquaintances during fleeting moments of everyday life–playing basketball, hanging out at home, or traveling abroad. Lovell recently moved to Brooklyn from Atlanta, where he grew up bouncing between there and Chicago. At times, his childhood was unstable, and this aspect of his youth influenced the series’ subject matter.
Lovell’s large portraits are imbued with warmth and affection for the people who have become a family of his choosing. By elevating the everyday, Lovell captures his experience as an adult who is creating home with like-minded people. His portrait of Anthony is both a genre scene celebrating camaraderie as well as a monumental portrait of a person Lovell admires.

IN MEMORIAM
RICHARD R. GRIFFITH
We honor and remember long-time Munson trustee, Trustee Emeritus, and dear friend Richard Griffith, who passed away May 6, 2024. Rick’s trusteeship spanned 14 years between May 1997 and June 2018. He served as Chair of the Board from December 2003 through 2006 and as Vice Chairman for two terms. As a Trustee, Rick worked with the Executive, Governance, Nominating, and Finance committees, and he set an example by chairing the Pratt Task Force Committee and the Inspire! campaign.
Born in Utica, Rick spent the majority of his career at Sturges Manufacturing Co., Inc., retiring as President and CEO in 2017. In addition to his successful career, Rick was a dedicated steward to organizations across the Mohawk Valley, serving on numerous community boards. At Munson, he provided outstanding leadership and commitment and touched many lives.
During his time on the Board, Munson celebrated some tremendous achievements, including the establishment of the Pratt Munson College of Art and Design, completion of major construction projects, dynamic exhibitions with record-breaking attendance, the expansion of the Community Arts Program, and renowned additions to the permanent collection. He also helped shepherd us through some challenging times with an even hand and thoughtful insights.
Most importantly, family was at the center of Rick’s life. We extend our deepest condolences to his wife of 52 years, Connie, and to his son and daughter-in-law, Tyler and Katie Griffith, and their children Carter and Anna.
Rick was warm, engaging, kind, and full of wit—the type of person you were always happy to see and visit. I will miss him and am indebted to his leadership and counsel in my early days as President. He set an example with his genuine personality and devotion to family and community.
