As the year winds down, there is so much for which to be grateful. As I look around the Munson campus, I am amazed at what we have achieved over the past 12 months, none of which could have been accomplished without your kind support. Munson presented hundreds of events and programs in 2024, such as sold-out concerts, stunning exhibitions, and dynamic new art classes. We also forged new partnerships, such as the successful Food and Art Unite presented with 92.7 The Drive, 98.3 El Zorro Latino Radio, and 15 local restaurants; Munson Night at the Comets; Art Educators Night Out with regional schools; programs with museums across the state; and a special event with the Rome NAACP and the New York State office on Human Rights. These are just a few examples of a year filled with outstanding community engagement.
Our impact throughout the Mohawk Valley includes our third year of offering free summer art classes for children, breaking down barriers to those who may not be able to participate otherwise. That effort extends during the rest of the year with scholarships for community art classes and for our Pratt Munson students, the next generation of artists and creatives.
This would not be accomplished without the generous support of our members, individual and corporate donors, and grant support. This assistance allows us to make events such as the Art Alive! Family Days free for the community and enables us to bring nationally recognized art and performers to Utica.
The success of this year’s diverse programming is matched by the transformation of our Genesee Street landscape. As I write this column, we have turned the conversation away from concrete and rebar to dirt, trees, and plants, a wonderful sign of timely progress. By the end of November, the landscape will look tidy and nearly completed. The final touches will wait until spring, and we look forward to welcoming you to a grand celebration in May.
As the days grow shorter and we gather for holiday festivities and gatherings with family and friends, I will reflect on the thoughtful words, generous support, and warm greetings you have shared with all of us at Munson this year. Thank you for being part of the Munson family. I wish you safe and joyful holidays.
With deep appreciation,
Anna T. D'Ambrosio President and CEO

CURATOR'S CORNER
VASE OF MANY COLORS
An important vase by the Cincinnati Art Pottery Company is the latest addition to the decorative arts collection at Munson, revealing a fascinating story of a young girl’s life in a midwestern American city at the turn of the 20th century. The company was only in business for about 10 years, and like many other pottery factories at the time, they employed all genders and ages in making high-quality, artistic wares. The division of labor at the factory was likely similar to other firms in Cincinnati in which women did most of the painting, glazing, and surface decoration while men mostly formed the pots. This vase is marked by Carrie Schlachter, who was a first-generation German American born in 1875 of a German father and an American mother.
The traditional Eastern European colors and floral decoration that Schlachter painted on the vase were known as “Hungarian Faience” at the company. The vase is also marked with the date of 1888, revealing that Schlachter was only 13 when she created the vase’s exuberant patterning. Child labor laws didn’t exist at the time, and after only two years of formal education, she began work at the factory. In England, this practice was common until a law was passed in 1908 making it illegal to employ children in the potteries under the age of 14. In America, that law wouldn’t be formalized until 1938 with the passage of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Not much else is known about
Schlachter (American, 1875–1957), Vase, 1888. Enameled and gilded earthenware. 13 x 6 1/4 in. Museum Purchase, Helen Munson Williams Fund.
Schlachter’s life after she left the factory in 1889 except that she later married and lived to be 91, dying in 1957. Yet, her legacy lives on in this beautiful expression of her talent and skill, soon to be installed in the decorative arts cases outside of Fountain Elms.

OF AMERICA COLLECTION
ON VIEW NOW THROUGH JAN. 12
WOMEN, PHOTOGRAPHY, AND MODERN LIFE
This autumn, the Museum of Art hosts the remarkable exhibition Modern Women / Modern Vision: Photographs from the Bank of America Collection. Featuring more than 80 images by legendary women artists, the exhibition highlights the contributions that women around the globe have made to the development of photography from 1900 to the present.
Women embraced photography when it was introduced as an art form in 1839 and have since played a vital role in framing the modern experience—the here and now—through the lens of a camera. Disrupting longstanding constraints placed on their behavior and opportunities in society, women in photography helped establish the medium as a dynamic form of artistic expression and, over time, have leveraged the camera as a means of creativity, financial independence, and personal freedom.
Modern Women / Modern Vision unfolds through an array of six themed groupings that chronicle the depth of photographic achievement in this exhibition: Modernist Innovators; Documentary Photography and the New Deal; The Photo League; Modern Masters; Exploring the Environment; and The Global Contemporary Lens. Berenice Abbott’s heroic studies of New York architectural monuments introduce an innovative spirit. From there, iconic portraits by Diane Arbus, Gertrude Käsebier, Dorothea Lange, Lisette Model, and others present humanity in a range of emotional states, from pride and pretense to joy and suffering.
This exhibition has been loaned through the Bank of America Art in our Communities® program. Additional support provided by exhibition series sponsors Christian and Cheryl Heilmann, Elizabeth R. Lemieux, Ph.D., the Family of F. X. Matt II, and Linda and Alan Vincent.
Street photographers such as Helen Levitt and Ruth Orkin capture the vitality of New York City neighborhoods with images of workers, parents, and children. Flor Garduño and Graciela Iturbide similarly celebrate the life and culture of rural Mexico. There are photographs that take a conceptual approach to representation such as Sandy Skoglund’s large-scaled, colorful Revenge of the Goldfish, a staged theatrical set that is funny and surreal at the same time.
Other artists turn the lens on themselves to question the underlying power dynamic between photographer, subject, and viewer. Carrie Mae Weems places herself and other Black women in front of the camera to tell stories that have long been unheard and unseen. Cindy Sherman creates alternative personas to demonstrate how the camera constructs expectations for gender and behavior. In addition to images of people, there is a variety of landscape images, some traditional but many more that examine the human imprint on earth. In the majestic, startling image The Blue Lagoon, Svartsengi geothermal hot water pumping Station, Porbjorn, Iceland, by Virginia Beahan and Laura McPhee, people swim in the springs bordering an extensive power plant.
Lisette Model (American, b. Austria, 1901–1983),
Diverse in style, tone, scale, and subject, the photographs in Modern Women / Modern Vision range from spontaneous to composed, detached to empathetic, and grand to intimate. In its diversity, the exhibition invites us to consider our world through the imagination of these photographers, and to examine how our worldview is shaped by the images we see.

GALLERY TALK:"WORKING WOMEN"
Nadya Bair, Assistant Professor, Department of Art History, Hamilton College
Sunday, Nov. 10, 2 p.m.
Light refreshments to follow
Before photographs entered museums, they circulated on the page via newspapers, magazines, and advertisements. In this talk, photo historian Dr. Nadya Bair will examine the professional lives of early 20th-century photographers including Margaret BourkeWhite and Dorothea Lange, considering how their pictures were shaped by the photo editors and art directors with whom they worked so closely.
Laura McPhee, photographer featured in Modern Women / Modern Vision Thursday, Dec. 5, 5 p.m.
Light refreshments to follow
Laura McPhee’s landscape photographs made over the last four decades question our attitudes and beliefs about the earth we inhabit, whether environmental, cultural, or geographical. As a meditation on our material lives and the unintended consequences of humanity's attempts to control and manage nature, the images depict our efforts as we navigate climate change and attempt to exploit, protect, alter, and restore the land.

IN MEMORIUM
REMEMBERING MUNSON TRUSTEES
JOHN STETSON FR. PAUL DROBIN
Trustee Emeritus John Stetson passed away in August at age 95. John was one of Munson’s longestserving trustees with a tenure that spanned a 41-year period beginning October 1974. John was Vice Chairman of the Board between 1991 and 1993 and Chairman from 1994 through 1998. He also chaired and served on several committees including Facilities, Finance, and School of Art.
Throughout his trusteeship, John provided outstanding leadership and valuable advice. The shape of Munson today, with our 24 buildings across several city blocks, is, in part, a credit to him. He was instrumental in the planning and oversight of major construction projects including the Museum of Art Education Wing, School of Art Studio Building, and the campus expansion.
When I came to Munson, John was on the Board, and he and his wonderful wife, Pegsy, were warm and welcoming. It was a pleasure to get to know them then and to enjoy their company for the decades that followed. John always had a sincere smile when he greeted you. He was genial, kind, and a supportive trustee who asked the right questions and offered sound guidance. John was a staunch ambassador and generous advocate of Munson, and many organizations benefited from his expertise and dedication. Our community, including Munson, is stronger thanks to John Stetson. He will be deeply missed.

FILM SERIES
Wednesdays and Fridays | 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
Join us each week for new foreign, independent, and award-winning films. Film selections are announced a week before the first series of the month.
Fr. Paul Drobin, who passed away on Sept. 27, served as a Munson Trustee from 2004 until 2012. To memorialize Fr. Drobin is nearly impossible. He had a tremendous impact across nearly every facet of our community. His was a life full of love, understanding, empathy, and compassion.
Fr. Drobin was enrolled in the very first session of children’s art classes offered at Munson. He often cited his experience from the pulpit when giving one of his thoughtful and engaging homilies that equated the impact of the arts—be it classical literature, The Little Prince, or a Jackson Pollock painting—with that of spirituality. Fr. Drobin, a long-time devoted member of Munson, understood better than most of us how art speaks to the soul, is an essential human expression, and is a language that unites all people.
All of us at Munson will dearly miss Fr. Drobin’s presence at events—from exhibitions to concerts to lectures and the Arts Festival. We will cherish more than ever the thoughtful notes Fr. Drobin sent after each event congratulating and thanking us. He may never have realized the impact of those personal, hand-written notes and how much they were cherished by the recipient.
We thank Fr. Drobin for his dedication to our community. His life-long devotion to Utica impacted thousands of lives, including that of my family. Our condolences to all who were touched by Fr. Paul Drobin.
