The New Year holiday is a time of reflection and anticipation. In the last Bulletin, I noted all that Munson accomplished in 2024, and now I am eager to share the excitement that our 2025 programming offers and to encourage you to make a New Year’s resolution with me.

There are many potential resolutions, like getting to the gym more often. While that’s always a good start to a calendar year and one to which I’ll commit, for me it does not embrace the feeling of anticipation and fresh energy of a new year. So, together, let’s make another kind of resolution—one that’s good for the soul. Resolve that in 2025 we’ll sample a new program at Munson.

I challenge you to try something outside of your usual participation and taste, and then share your experience with me. Maybe you’ve never taken a Community Arts class, attended The Met: Live in HD, or experimented with a Concert in the Court in a music genre outside your norm. Or, perhaps you prefer modern art and never venture to programs related to 19th-century art. Have you met some of our talented Pratt Munson students? If not, how about attending a Pratt Munson exhibition opening? Whatever the case may be, Munson offers you hundreds of opportunities to broaden your encounters with the arts.

When you go outside of your comfort zone at Munson, please email me at atdambro@munson.art to share your experience. We value hearing from you, and I look forward to discovering your Munson stories in the months ahead. Sharing arts experiences and reflecting on them is good for the soul—art unites us.

With all best wishes for a healthy and joyful New Year,

T. D'Ambrosio

CURATOR'S CORNER

SEEING AND BEING SEEN

Enter the Museum of Art from the parking lot into the reception galleries, and you will find an array of paintings, sculpture, photographs, and works on paper from the Museum’s collection addressing the theme of looking—especially at other people. Included are finished paintings and quick sketches in pencil, oil, or photography by artists wandering a city with a keen eye and fascination for the human parade. Several artworks are traditional portraits with the artist capturing the likeness of a sitter. These images invite our curiosity— begging questions about personality, the subject’s willingness to reveal themselves, or the artist’s ability to uncover another person’s interior life. Raymond Han’s Portrait of a Caterer, for example, makes an interesting comparison to Walt Kuhn’s Camp Cook. Both paintings feature a seated man in an undefined space, but the caterer avoids eye contact while the cook holds us in a steady gaze. Taken as a group, all of the artwork on this floor reflects the idea that seeing and being seen creates a continual loop of assessing one’s place in society—how do we compare ourselves to others based on appearances? This installation will be on view through the spring and summer months.

MUNSON COMMUNITY ARTS

PURSUE YOUR CREATIVITY AT MUNSON

Munson is dedicated to enriching the lives of people by providing creative outlets that inspire them to experience great art and encourage them to create their own artistic visions.

Since the 1940s, Munson Community Arts has offered part-time, non-credit instruction for beginning, intermediate, and advanced students. Today, all classes are taught in the state-ofthe-art Pratt Munson College of Art and Design facilities, reinforcing our goal to provide excellent instruction and studios for the creation of art.

Core to Munson's mission is the community’s participation

in the exhilarating reward that can be had in pursuing one’s innate creativity.

Our faculty— skilled, professional artists and art educators—share their passion, experience, and knowledge with their students. Whether you are a seasoned artist looking to investigate new avenues and techniques or a beginner who wants to take that first step to discover the

possibilities of your talent, Munson has classes and programs to fit your schedule and comfort level.

Taking an art class is a great way to meet interesting people and engage in conversation around the notion of creativity. Now, more than ever, art and design are celebrated in every aspect of our daily lives: in the digital media we enjoy, the designs of our everyday

products, the publications we read, and the availability of new and exciting creative materials.

Our classes teach skills that utilize a wide variety of tools, from basic hand tools to computers to kilns and more, while emphasizing your most important tools—your hands, eyes, mind, and heart.

EVENT SPONSORS

Munson’s robust calendar includes hundreds of events every year. Some are small and others draw hundreds of people from throughout the community. Those larger events—including performances, workshops, festivals, and exhibitions—all have something in common: sponsors have made them possible. Our work is enabled, and our outcomes magnified, through the generosity of individuals, companies, and foundations who lend their support, and their names, to projects that they care about. I hope that, as you review the Bulletin for announcements highlighting special events, you take a minute to notice the people who have made those events possible. You might even consider sharing how much you enjoyed taking part!

BOARD MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

VIGE BARRIE

It was a good day for Munson when Vige Barrie moved into the area to join her new husband, Jim Frederick, an established family practice physician in the area. Jim was a vital part of the medical community in Utica until his retirement in 2021. Vige joined Hamilton College's advancement office as a media relations expert, connecting professors with local and major media outlets like The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and NPR. The couple's talents extend beyond their work lives. Jim is an avid gardener, and Vige is both a practicing artist and a tremendous supporter of the arts.

Since 2001, Vige and Jim have been members at Munson, where Vige quickly stepped up to volunteer and to take classes in the Community Arts program. She joined the Board of Trustees in 2011 and served as Board Chair from 2017 through 2019. Throughout that time, the couple made sustaining gifts to Munson’s membership program and Annual Fund, and they have led the way with support of special Board

IN MEMORIAM LINDA VINCENT

Linda Vincent, a former Munson trustee and longtime Museum of Art docent, passed away all too soon on Oct. 16. Linda was a woman of vision who dedicated her time to family, education, entrepreneurship, and community.

Museum docents spend many hours learning art history, museum interpretation, and touring techniques. Linda embraced this role with vigor, as she did all new opportunities. Over the 15 years she volunteered in our Education Department, Linda toured a myriad of groups from school children to those with special needs to general visitors. Her love of people and of sharing her enthusiasm for art and Munson came across during the hundreds of tours she presented. She inspired thousands through all of her work in our community.

initiatives, including a Diversity Scholarship for Pratt Munson. Vige continues to serve on Munson’s Board, sharing her wisdom on the School of Art and development committees. An ideal board member offers wealth, work, and wisdom for the organization. Munson is fortunate on all three fronts with Vige, who has the unique ability to lend a critical eye along with a supportive hand.

Vige’s commitment motivates our work, and support from Vige and many others sustain us. Thank you for being a vital part of our community!

“ Our community has many needs but the arts are key to its health and growth. Supporting Munson helps to ensure that health and vibrancy.”
—VIGE BARRIE, MUNSON TRUSTEE

Linda was a dedicated Munson trustee from 2010 through 2018. Bringing a diverse set of skills and experiences to the Board, Linda served on numerous committees including executive, governance, marketing, School of Art, human resources, and development. Her guidance was always thoughtful and constructive, and she connected people and businesses across the Mohawk Valley, always thinking of creative and entrepreneurial opportunities for nonprofits.

I will miss Linda’s bright smile and good sense of humor. For decades, she and Alan, her husband of 54 years, have been regular participants at Munson and have enjoyed probably every type of event or program we offer. Most recently, Linda and Alan were generous sponsors to the exhibition Modern Women l Modern Vision: Photographs from the Bank of America Collection, and, as my colleague Stephen Harrison noted at Linda’s memorial service, nothing could be more appropriate because the title of the exhibition sums up Linda so very well.

MUSEUM SHOP FEATURED ARTIST

TATIYANA BROWN

How did you get involved in the arts?

I am a fine artist and have been involved in the arts since childhood. My mother was a clothing designer, and I spent a lot of time by her side, sewing. From there, I engaged in various forms of art, including painting and sculpting. The challenges I face in life often inspire my work.

How has Munson played a role in your creative life? Munson has played a significant role in my artistic journey, motivating me to learn more about art and the artists throughout history. I first learned about Munson [while a student at] Clinton High School through my elementary art teacher, who encouraged me to attend Pratt. Unfortunately, I couldn't go, but I was fortunate to work at the Museum for over a year. My favorite part of Munson are the Pratt student art shows; it’s a fantastic experience to witness such creativity.

I’ve also had the privilege of participating in the Arts Festival, where I became the first artist to sell my piece on the first day of the show. This success inspired me to become a consignor at the Museum Shop. About three years ago, I launched my art business, Alimitlessmind, focusing on commissioned work

EASTON PRIBBLE LECTURE SERIES

to showcase my creations to the world and bring my customers' ideas to life. My services include paintings, murals, portraits, custom-designed apparel, logos, and tattoo designs.

What are your artistic goals for the future?

My goal as an artist is to change people's perspectives for the better. I aspire to have my pieces displayed in a museum and to eventually open my own art gallery with a studio. My diverse range of art is intended to evoke feelings of discomfort that lead to comfort, motivation, happiness, warmth, and nostalgia. To create discomfort, I use subjective art, which may be abstract or political. I love what I do, and I hope you enjoy it, too.
