AN EVENING OF BARTÓK
Performance by Gergely Madaras, the Hungarian National Philharmonic and the Szeged Contemporary Dance Company Bartók: Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta, Sz. 106, BB 114 • Bartók: Concerto for Orchestra, Sz. 116, BB 123 Vencel Csetényi – Béla Bartók • Petra Bocsi – Ditta Pásztory • Gergely Czár – Bluebeard • Boglárka Heim – Judit • Róbert Kiss – Mandarin • Réka Kiss – Mimi Graziano Bongiovanni – The Wooden Prince • Marie Vilette – Princess • Zsófia Liszkai – Spider • Boglárka Heim – Allegory of the Homeland • Szandra Szigyártó – Virgin Mary • Lotár Vincze – Satan • Also featuring: Janka Nier, Adrienn Nyeste, Hanna Hudacsek, Fanni Mészáros, Adam Bobák Ferenc Stadler – Lighting • Dóra Mojzes – Costumes • Gergely Czár – Assistant to the choreographer • Juronics Tamás – Concept, choreographer The content and form of Concerto, the symphonic work Béla Bartók wrote in the United States, cannot be separated from his experience, his mood, in 1943, prior to the composition: he was constantly ill, was tormented by homesickness, and was worried over the fate of his homeland and Europe. This dance production, which was inspired by the music of the Concerto, evokes the composer’s person as a character who shares the stage with such figures from Bartók’s oeuvre as Bluebeard, the Mandarin and the Wooden Prince. In the first part of the concert, Gergely Madaras will conduct the orchestra through a pivotal high point of the oeuvre, an outstanding composition of the 20th century, Bartók’s Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta. The performance is available to view on our website, as well as on the Bartók Spring website, Facebook page and YouTube channel.

JAKUB JÓZEF ORLIŃSKI AND IL POMO D’ORO Cavalli: La Calisto – Sinfonia • Cavalli: La Calisto – “Erme e solinghe cime... Lucidissima face” (Endimione’s recitative and aria, Act II) • Boretti: Eliogabalo – “Chi scherza con Amor” (Eliogabalo’s aria, Act III) • Boretti: Claudio Cesare – Sinfonia (Act II) • Boretti: Claudio Cesare – “Crudo amor, non hai pietà” (Claudio’s aria, Act II) • Bononcini: La costanza non gradita nel doppio amore d’Aminta (serenata) – “Infelice mia costanza” (Aminta’s aria) • Conti: Don Chisciotte in Sierra Morena – “Odio, vendetta, amor” (Fernando’s aria, Act IV) • Bononcini: La Nemica d’Amore fatta amante – Sinfonia • Handel: Muzio Scevola, HWV 13 – “Spera che tra le care gioie” (Muzio’s aria, Act III) • Handel: Amadigi di Gaula, HWV 11 – „Pena tiranna” (Dardano’s aria, Act II) • Matteis: Don Chisciotte in Sierra Morena – Ballo dei Bagatellieri • Predieri: Scipione il giovane – “Finche salvo è l’amor suo” (Scipione’s aria, Act I) • Orlandini–Mattheson: Nerone – “Che m’ami ti prega” (Nerone’s aria, Act I) We’ve become accustomed to the great tenors and sopranos being genuine megastars, personalities whose every move is watched by their armies of fans. A couple of decades ago, the world’s renowned countertenors closed the gap on them, their ranks now containing idols to match Caruso, Callas and their ilk. The young Polish countertenor Jakub Józef Orliński is one such star – and this is hardly surprising, given that he is not only a wonderful singer, but has the looks of an Apollo (and, let us mention incidentally, is sought after as a fashion model). What is more, besides singing he is also a breakdancing virtuoso. The recording was made in Germany at Theater Essen on 10 May 2021. The performance will be broadcasted on our website and YouTube channel.

VIENNA PHILHARMONIC Mahler: Symphony No. 10 in F-sharp major – Adagio • Symphony No. 1 in D major (“Titan”) Conductor: Daniel Harding It is an exciting thing when a single concert offers a chance to look at both the start and the end of an artist’s career. This performance does just that with the output of the greatest composer of symphonies of the 20th century, not to mention doing so by surveying his initial youthful steps from the perspective of the final ones taken at the conclusion of his life. The programme features two symphonies: the completed first one and the surviving fragment of the final one. Mahler has become a symbol of Vienna (much like his great predecessors, who also gravitated to the city from elsewhere, as he did), and playing his works on this occasion will be another one of its symbols: the celebrated and storied Vienna Philharmonic. The recording of the concert is made at Vienna Konzerthaus on 25 May 2021. The performance will be broadcasted on our website.
