Areka is the fruit of the creative collaboration of twenty young artists. The traditional Basque cultural mold (bertsolaritza) converges with audiovisual experimentation, drawing inspiration from a bertso created by Andoni Egaña expressly for this project. All the creators have worked collaboratively, exchanging both techniques and work modalities as well as experiences, and enabling mutual learning. For this reason, this film maintains a great visual coherence. The short film is a work of collective creation directed by twenty young Basque artists, under the coordination of Bego Vicario. The short film interprets a “bertso” performed by Andoni Egaña in homage to those who disappeared in the Civil War. Eighty-year-old Euxebi has never known where her father’s remains lay, but she has kept her memory alive until her remains have been found.

Areka est le fruit de la collaboration créative d’une vingtaine de jeunes artistes. Le moule culturel basque traditionnel (bertsolarisme) converge avec l’expérimentation audiovisuelle, s’inspirant d’un bertso créé par Andoni Egaña expressément pour ce projet. Tous les créateurs ont travaillé en collaboration, échangeant à la fois des techniques et des modalités de travail ainsi que des expériences, et permettant un apprentissage mutuel. Pour cette raison, ce film conserve une grande cohérence visuelle. Le court métrage est une œuvre de création collective réalisée par vingt jeunes artistes basques, sous la coordination de Bego Vicario. Le court métrage interprète un “bertso” réalisé par Andoni Egaña en hommage à ceux qui ont disparu pendant la guerre civile. Euxebi, quatre-vingts ans, n’a jamais su où reposait la dépouille mortelle de son père, mais elle a gardé sa mémoire vivante jusqu’à ce que sa dépouille soit retrouvée.

During the initial moments of the Spanish Civil War, ditches became the burial ground for many of those executed in the shadows. Mass graves containing the remains of anonymous victims of the conflict have gradually been uncovered thanks to the testimony of those who preserved the memory of what occurred through the long years of silence. As well as enabling the mortal remains of those who were summarily shot to be recovered, these discoveries have also symbolised the breaking of the silence and the beginning of the process of reclaiming our historical memory of the victims of a repression that continued for far too long. The animated video made by the Areka group focuses on this latter aspect, based on an improvised verse by the extempore poet Andoni Egaña.

Les fossés devinrent dans les premiers moments de la guerre des lieux où enterrer les fusillés clandestinement. Les fosses communes qui accueillent les morts anonymes du conflit ont été découvertes peu à peu grâce aux témoignages d’une pléthore de personnes qui se souvinrent pendant des années de ce qui s’était passé. Faire éclater la vérité au grand jour a consisté à récupérer les dépouilles des personnes fusillées, mais pas seulement. Cela a marqué le symbole de la fin du silence, du début de la récupération de la mémoire historique des victimes d’une répression qui a duré trop longtemps. La vidéo d’animation du collectif Areka met l’accent sur cet aspect en prenant comme prétexte un bertso de l’improvisateur Andoni Egaña.
