Welcome Welcome to the latest guide to What’s On at the Museum of Oxford, Gallery and Old Museum. Thanks to support from Arts Council England, the Museum is looking forward to celebrating its 40th Anniversary with a season of arts events starting this November with digital installations, live music and readings and workshops with our writer in residence. Explore Oxford continues to play host to brilliant family events, from ‘Living in First World War Oxford Family Day’ to ‘Lantern Making Workshops’ Meanwhile, The Gallery will be exhibiting work from some of Oxford’s top artists and community groups and our popular Heritage Tours will explore the Town Hall’s hidden corners and stories. We’re delighted to be taking part in the Christmas Light Festival with VIP shopping events, a boardgame remix party, film screenings, lantern exhibition and free family activities. We look forward to seeing you this winter in our three venues in Oxford’s historic Town Hall.

Regular Events Explore Oxford Visit the Museum of Oxford’s interactive galleries located in the Town Hall opposite reception. This permanent exhibition tells visitors the fascinating story of Oxford and its people in two very different spaces. Download our new app now available on Apple iOS and Android, search ‘Museum Trails Oxfordshire’.

Oxford Uncovered Family Trail Take a different look at the Explore Oxford galleries, discover some amazing artefacts and write a letter to the past. Suitable for all the family to do together. 50p from the Museum Gift Shop. Available 10am to 4.30pm Monday to Saturday.

Community Workshops Beginners Workshops for adults in the Heritage Learning including Searchers, Creative Writing, Art For All and Changing Directions. See monthly listings for further details. Heritage Tours: Town Hall Join the Museum of Oxford as we take you on a tour around Oxford’s magnificent Town Hall. New for autumn 2014: WW1 Heritage Tours. See monthly listings for further details. October 6 September – 5 December Under Siege family trail Discover more about people in the past who have been under siege or affected by war with this family trail around the Explore Oxford galleries. This trail is in conjunction with St Mary’s University church and will feature across both sites. Suitable for all the family. Available 10am to 4.30pm Monday to Saturday for £1 from the Museum’s Gift Shop.

20 September – 8 November Shuffrey in Pictures, FREE, Gallery An exhibition celebrating the work of renowned local artist James Allen Shuffrey to celebrate 155 years since his birth. Featuring original paintings of local Oxford scenes painted by Shuffrey in the early 20th century, side by side with contemporary photographic and painted responses by Oxfordshire MIND and the Museum of Oxford Art Group.


1–30 October Kabul: Portraits from a Troubled City (Roger Gilboy), FREE, Gallery Corridor An exhibition of black and white portraits of local residents of Kabul by Oxford photographer Roger Gilboy. Accompanied by a series of colour photographs showing them in context with their surroundings.

2 October Old is the New Young Festival, 10am – 4pm, FREE, Main Hall Join us in celebrating National Older People’s Day in the Town Hall which will include information stalls, Internet Café, portrait painting, dance and music performances, exercise demonstrations and take part in the #Oldisthenewyoungselfie fun on Twitter.

25 October WW1 medals exhibition and family history open day with the Orders and Medals Research Society, 10am – 4pm Find out about local people in WW1, see real First World War medals and even make your own version! The Thames Valley branch of the Orders and Medals Research Society will be displaying WW1 medals from the members’ own collections, including local men and regiments. They will also be on hand to provide advice about researching your own WW1 family history and will be happy to look at medals brought in by members of the public. There will be a drop-in family stall where families will be able to make their own medals and take part in our Oxford Under Siege gallery trail.

30 October Living in First World War Oxford Family day, 10.30am – 3.30pm, FREE, Heritage Learning Centre Discover more about Oxford in the First World War and handle real wartime objects. Families can make their own medals and learn more about the people of WW1 and their stories. You might even meet a visiting wartime character!

3–29 November Tutti Frutti (Elena Henshaw), FREE, Gallery Corridor Elena Henshaw is an Oxford-based figurative artist with interest in various subjects from portraiture to still-life and landscape. This exhibition features a series of colourful small works in a traditional, multi-layered technique in oil paints, unusually decorated with chunky, oak frames. Tutti Frutti explores the variety of colourful imagery that is presented to us through seemingly mundane objects such as fruit and vegetables.

Also new for this autumn is the Christmas Light Festival (21–23 November), offering a weekend of cultural family fun at venues across the city, including here at the Museum. The theme for this year’s festival is “See Your City in a Different Light” and will see collaboration between more than 20 venues in Oxford, offering live music and dance performances, arts installations and free cultural activities for the communities of the city. “See   your city in a different light at Oxford’s Christmas Light Festival. 22–23 November On Saturday and Sunday we will be unlocking the doors of our beautiful Old Museum and hosting a selection of special interactive installations including an exciting musical Lego installation by contemporary artist Alex Allmont. There will be a chance to make your own mini lantern to take home with you. This event is for all age groups and abilities so do drop in at any time during the day and join in the fun. The large lantern will be hung in our gallery alongside another lantern created by a local Primary school. 20 January Creative Writing, 1.30–3.30pm, FREE, Heritage Learning Centre A creative writing class for anyone who wants to try their hand at writing prose, poetry and plays in a supportive group environment.

22 January – 7 February AIMS EXPO 2015, FREE, Gallery AIMS is a group of artists who are sufferers or survivors of mental health conditions. The group was formed a decade ago and has exhibited together annually since. The group exhibit paintings, drawings, photography, sculptures and poetry. Their work is very varied but always colourful, interesting and imaginative. They also have various degrees of training from outsider artists to formally trained ones but they are all united in their desire to create and to use this creativity to benefit their lives.
