New Model Army to the Galaxy ... Willkommen im neuen Jahr zu unserer Februar/März-Doppelausgabe und ein ganz großes SORRY, dass wir diesen Monat erst so spät erschienen sind. Grund dafür war der Trancers Guide To The Galaxy 2008, der aufgrund einiger Verspätungen letztendlich gleichzeitig mit dem mushroom produziert werden musste. Der wird übrigens im Laufe des Monats ins Portugiesische übersetzt und im Frühjahr in einer Zusatzauflage von 20.000 Heften in Brasilien verteilt.

Welcome to the new year, and our February/March double issue. First off a big apology for the magazine appearing so late this month. The reason for this was that due to a few delays the Trancers Guide To The Galaxy 2008 had to be produced at the same time as mushroom magazine. An interesting fact: the TTG will be translated into Portuguese in the coming month, and 20.000 of it will be distributed n spring in Brazil as an extra edition.

Lately new projects have been popping out of the ground like mushrooms. Viele Labels vertreiben bereits digital. Alle anderen sollten schnell auf diesen Zug aufspringen. In diesem Special bekommst Du einen Einblick in das Labelbusiness und Informationen, wie Du als Künstler Deine Musik auch ohne Label weltweit vertreiben kannst. Many labels are already distributing their music digitally. The others should get aboard as soon as possible. In this special we will give you insight into the label business, and info on how you can get your music into all important online shops worldwide, even if you do not have a label. Schon mit Erfindung der CD und der auch für den Hausgebrauch immer erschwinglicheren verlustfreien Kopierbarkeit war bereits das Ende des althergebrachten Musikvertriebes besiegelt. Immer schnellere Datenübertragungsraten taten Ihr Übriges, um P2P Tauschbörsen immer mehr Aufwind zu geben. Dummerweise hatte die Musikindustrie diese Entwicklung verschlafen und bastelte an immer neuen Kopierschutzmechanismen herum, statt sich um globale digitale Vertriebswege zu kümmern. Die Zeit arbeitete gegen die Labels, denn die CD-Verkäufe waren mittlerweile auf einen kleinen Bruchteil der damaligen Absätze gefallen. Bei PsyTranceStandardauflagen von gerade mal 1000 CDs war und ist aber die Produktion pro CD bei gleichzeitig sinkenden Verkaufspreisen viel zu teuer. Vertriebe wie Arabesque und der Psyshop reagierten glücklicherweise darauf und bieten den Labels mit einer Vorfinanzierung der Pro-

duktionskosten eine gewisse Sicherheit. Somit konnte das Labelsterben nicht nur eingedämmt werden, sondern es erstanden auch viele neue Labels.

CD distribution by a label Bei der klassische Distribution einer CD fallen Herstellungskosten an. Außerdem muss mit eventuell unkalkulierbaren Retourenraten gerechnet werden werden. Dies ist potentieller Gewinn, welcher dem Label so entgeht. Die Einkünfte des Artists berechnen sich aus dem Artistanteil und der GEMA-Abgabe. Production costs are a part of the classical CD distribution model of a label. Additionally, labels have to account for unknown numbers of returned CDs. This is potential profit which is lost for the labels.

Mit dem 2003 gestarteten iTunes zeigte Apple indes, dass es als Vollsortimenter möglich ist Musik digital zu vertreiben, während die großen Labels immer noch dabei waren hauseigene Labelshops zu hypen. In dieser Pionierphase startete auch Beatport als Spezialist für jedwelartist che Art von elektronischer Clubmu1,40 € sik. Die digitale Distribution über ein Label bringt Künstlern sowie Labels Zusatzeinnahmen, da durch den Onlineverkauf zusätzliche Märkte erschlossen werden. Digital distribution creates extra revenue for both artists and labels, as new markets are opened up by online sales.

DIGITAL Da bekommen nun aber nicht nur die kleinen Labels Torschlusspanik, sondern auch viele Künstler, die nach dem erfolgreichen Versuch Ihre Musik in Social Music Communities zu verkaufen, jetzt ein Label oder ein Vertriebsinstrument suchen. Aber das zu finden ist gar nicht so einfach. Dabei bietet doch gerade der Onlineverkauf die Möglichkeit fernab von jeglichem Albumdenken Tracks schnell und direkt zu veröffentlichen und weltweit ständig verfügbar zu machen. Durch den trackweisen Verkauf ist jedoch auch das Füllmaterial schnell enttarnt, welches dann zum digitalen Ladenhüter verkommt. Der Musik tut‘s gut, da der Artist angespornt wird lieber weniger A-Ware als viel B-Ware zu produzieren. Durch Remixe, welche diverse Musikstyles tangieren ist es möglich den Geschmack von verschiedenen Leuten zu treffen. Ein gewisses Feld für Soundexperimente ist also auf jeden Fall gegeben. Wir vom mushroom wollen ganz besonders den kleinen Labels und den Artists helfen, die es aus eigener Kraft nicht schaffen würden Fuß in der digitalen Vertriebswelt zu fassen. Aber selbstverständlich ist unser neues Projekt auch etwas für die größeren Labels: Agent Audio heisst das neue Distributionsnetzwerk unter der Leitung von Mat Mushroom und baq. Die

Künstler die Ihre Verkäufe selber managen bekommen am meisten vom Kuchen ab, haben aber auch viele zusätzliche Arbeit, die sonst das Label übernehmen würde. Artists that distribute their tracks on their own get the highest profit but have to take over a lot of extra work that would have been taken care of by the label in the past.

Bei Beatport hat sich der Umsatz von Psytrance in den letzten zwei Jahren vervierzehnfacht! Es ist somit ein Prozess des Umdenkens im Gange. Musik kaufen im Internet gewinnt neben P2P durch artist ein gutes Angebot und innovative 3,64 € neue Shopkonzepte immer mehr an Fahrt. Gleichzeitig öffnen sich die Türen für die einzelnen Künstler, die in Eigenmanagement realeasen können. Das Licht am Ende des Tunnels wird also immer größer distributor und die Zukunft hoffentlich sehr 2,27 € grell und geil. www.agentaudio.net

Of Music Distribution

With the invention of the CD player, as well as the increasingly affordable, loss free copying methods for home use, the fate of established music distribution schemes was sealed. Rapidly increasing data transfer rates were the final development in this process, which lead to the spread, and ever growing popularity of P2P file exchange platforms. The music industry foolishly tried ignoring this process, and in the meantime kept working on ever more complex data protection mechanisms, instead of adapting, and building up digital distribution pathways. Time was working against the labels, and eventually CD sales dropped to a fraction of what the labels had been used to working with. Considering the standard pressing runs in the psy trance sector of 1000 units or less, combined with downward spiralling sales prices, this resulted in the production price per CD becoming prohibitively high. Distributors such as Arabesque and Psyshop luckily reacted to this development, and by offering to pre finance (part of) the production costs were able to support labels with at least a small amount of financial security. In this way many labels were saved from extinction,

and even new labels were able to spring up in our sector. With the Itunes music shop launched in 2003, Apple showed that it was possible to successfully distribute music digitally, provided one was able to offer a widely ranging music spectrum. Unfortunately, many labels at this time were still focussed on trying to hype their internal catalogue only web shops. It was also around this time that Beatport was launched, specializing on all kinds of electronic music. Initially, this new platform was seen sceptically by most labels, however, the large run on this new cash cow of download shops resulted in new guidelines decreed by Beatport. These entail that labels have to meet a minimum sale volume, in order to protect the platform from one hit wonders, and curb the amount of administration work connected with smaller labels. Not only small labels developed a certain amount of eleventh hour panic; many artists who had successfully started offering their music on social music communities, were now faced with the hard task of finding a label, or digital

distribution platform. The irony is, that online sales should offer the possibility to make single tracks available world wide, and artists should no longer be constrained by having to complete an entire album first. The flip side of these track by track sales, is that ‘filler tracks’ were quickly recognised for what they were, which in turn led to an increasing stock of digital shelf warmers. Overall however, this is a positive development music-wise, as artists are enticed to produce a few A grade tracks, instead of as many B grade tracks as possible. Another interesting development are remixes which move within a few different genres, and thus increase the possibility of hitting a nerve with a more varied audience. Thereby, a certain playground for sound experimentation is now available. The team at the mushroom would like to support smaller labels as well as artists, who might not be able to expand into the digital distribution market. Our new project is also surely interesting for larger labels: Agent Audio is our new digital distribution network, managed by Mat and Baq. This new agency will completely take care of a lot of time consuming work, such as META coding, conversion, and distribution of tracks to over 200 world wide online shops. However, beyond this we are also able to offer mastering, GEMA / MCPS handling, price structuring, as well as extensive promotion, in a tightly knit cooperation with mushroom magazine. Finally, the most important task of this new network, from an artist‘s point of view, will be the accounting of sold tracks, which will offer artists new income possibilities, without any form of investment, and regardless whether his or her music is already available on CD.

In the last two years, the turnover of psytrance music has increased by a factor of 14*! As such a mental readjustment process is clearly underway. Legally acquiring tracks

online is showing an increasing popularity compared to peer 2 peer networks, provided shops offer an interesting catalogue, a well as innovative shop concepts. At the same time, new avenues are opening for artists who would like to release their material worldwide under

4 years Beatport - interview with Ronny Krieger

Während man beim musikalischen Mainstream immer nur von iTunes redet, hat sich in den letzten Jahren mit Beatport ein speziell auf die Bedürfnisse der DJs entwickelter Shop an die Spitze gearbeitet und bereits eine marktführende Stellung eingenommen. Im Februar feiert man vierjähriges Jubiläum. Grund genug innerhalb unseres Digital Music Specials dem Vice President Ronny Krieger ein paar Fragen zum Thema zu stellen. Wie war die Entwicklung legaler digitaler Downloads innerhalb der letzten zwei Jahre, und wie ist Deine Einschätzung für die nächsten zwei Jahre ? Innerhalb der letzten zwei Jahre hat sich das Downloadgeschäft von einem „netten Nebenverdienst“ bei dem Großteil der Labels zur Haupt- oder neben Vinyl und CD zumindest gleichberechtigten zu einem ernstzunehmenden Revenue Stream entwickelt. Dieser Trend hält an und so wird in Kürze für den Großteil der Danceindustrie der Grossteil des Gewinnes im Downloadgeschäft erwirtschaftet werden. Was rechtfertigt einen legalen Download für die Leute die bisher in P2P Netzwerken Musik tauschen ? Das ist eine reine Wertigkeitsfrage. Mag ich Musik? Bedeutet mir Musik mehr als nur ein kurzweiliger Zeitvertrieb oder Nebenberieselung? Falls das der Fall ist, sollte sich jeder Filesharer darüber im Klaren sein, dass unsere Szene nur dann auch in Zukunft weiterbestehen kann, wenn

den Künstlern ermöglicht wird, Musik zu produzieren. Dafür brauchen sie Einkünfte. Ihr habt eine Richtlinie erlassen, die besagt, dass Ihr Labels mit weniger als 300$ Umsatz pro Quartal aus dem Shop ausschliessen wollt. Schliesst Ihr damit nicht die kleinen Labels oder Sublabels von der digitalen Musikrevolution aus, die neue Impulse geben? Es ist noch nie ein Label bei Beatport gedroppt worden, weil die Verkäufe nicht einer bestimmten Richtlinie entsprochen haben. In den letzten Jahren wurden jedoch durch allerlei Umwege über Vertriebe einige Labels ins Beatport-System gestellt, die nicht unseren Qualitätsansprüchen genügen. Desweiteren hat das Downloadbusiness in einigen Fällen recht unprofessionelle Labels hervorgebracht, die bei Gründung nicht über den ersten Release hinausgedacht haben. [...] Einige wenige Labels, die nicht unseren Qualitätsansprüchen genügen, werden deshalb aussortiert. Wir reden hier jedoch von nicht einmal 5% unserer Labels. Was für Updates stehen in nächster Zeit für Beatport an? Es gibt stetig Weiterentwicklungen. Im Moment arbeiten wir intensiv an Beatport Version 4.0. Dort wird man viele Innovationen sehen können. Außerdem starten wir ab Anfang Februar mit Beatsource. com ein Downloadportal für Hip Hop.

While in the commercial sector, most people only speak of iTunes, in recent years Beatport has risen to the top of the electronic scene, and has taken a leading position in the market with its shop specifically tailored to the needs of DJs. In February they are celebrating their four year anniversary. A perfect occasion for us to interview Ronny Krieger, Beatport’s Vice President, within our Digital Music Special. How has the digital download market developed in the last two years, and

how do you expect it to continue its development in the coming two years? Within the last two years, the download business has gone from being a “nice” secondary source of income for the majority of labels, to the main source of revenue, or at least an important revenue stream, next to vinyl and CD sales. This trend is not letting up, and so the main source of profit in the short term for the dance industry, will be made in the download business. What justifies a legal download for those who have so far been trading music in P2P platforms? That is a pure matter of inherent value. Do I like music? Does music mean more to me than a short lived way to pass the time, or a side line input? If this is the case, then every filesharer should know that our scene can only continue to exist, if artists have the possibility to produce music. In order to do this, they need an income source. You recently announced a guideline that states you plan to exclude labels from the shop that have a revenue of less than 300$ per quarter. By doing this, are you not excluding the smaller labels from the digital music revolution, which are often responsible for bringing new impulses? As a matter of fact no label has ever been dropped from Beatport because their sales did not meet a certain criterion. However, for a number of years labels were added to Beatport that do not meet our quality criteria. The download business also resulted in some quite unprofessional labels springing up, not thinking beyond their first release. [...] As a result, a few labels that do not meet our quality criteria will have to leave. However, we are speaking of less than 5% of all the labels featured at Beatport. What updates are underway for Beatport in the coming times? We are currently working very hard on Beatport’s version 4.0. Furthermore with

Gerade in Zeiten der Digitalisierung und Globalisierung der Musikmärkte wird das Musikrecht-Räderwerk noch komplizierter und Verwertungsgesellschaften wie die deutsche GEMA stehen plötzlich in einem Wettbewerb mit anderen europäischen Organisationen. Aber auch in Social Communities des Web 2.0 ist das Copyright von Musik neu zu bewerten. Deutsche Partyveranstalter haben indes durch einen speziellen Tarif für Dancemusic unter Mitarbeit der DJs die Möglichkeit die Musiker der Tranceszene zu unterstützen, um die GEMA-Pflichtzahlung nicht in den Rachen der Schlager- und PopProduzenten zu werfen. Wir befragten den Hamburger Medien-Rechtsanwalt Andres Heyn (www.andresheyn.de) zum Thema Musikrecht, da das Thema Copyright und GEMA bei vielen PsyTrance-Artists tatsächlich noch Neuland ist. Was kann eine Rechteverwertungsgesellschaft wie die GEMA heutzutage für den Künstler leisten? Ab wann lohnt sich der Eintritt in GEMA & Co ?

Die GEMA nimmt die Rechte an Kompositionen (nicht an Tonaufnahmen !) ihrer Mitglieder wahr. Durch diesen Vertrag bindet man sich also weitgehend an ein mehr oder weniger gut funktionierendes, aber recht starres System. Wenn man Mitglied wird, kümmert sich die GEMA um die Vergabe der Lizenzen und auch die Überprüfung der Nutzungen der angemeldeten Werke. Eine Mitgliedschaft lohnt sich, wenn Verwertungen zu erwarten sind (etwa Einnahmen aus Radio, TV, Tonträger, Online), die man selber nicht alle kontrollieren kann. Wie wird GEMA beim Trackkauf abgerechnet ? Wer zahlt die Gebühren, wie kommt sie dem Komponisten zugute ? Der GEMA-Tarif für Music-OnDemand Dienste ist auf der Homepage der GEMA (www.gema.de) abrufbar und sieht eine Lizenz von 15 % vor, die der Content Provider (nicht das Label !) vom NettoEndnutzerpreis zu entrichten hat. Die Mindestvergütung beträgt 0,125 Cent bei „bezahlten“ Downloads und 0,1875 Cent bei „kostenlosen“ Downloads. Dies führt bei solchen „Promotions“ immer wieder zu Schwierigkeiten. Ein weiteres, heikles Thema ist, dass die GEMA die Rechte nur für Deutschland und nicht für Europa insgesamt lizenziert. Dies führt bei den Music Content Providern zu eklatanten Rechtsproblemen. Die GEMA rechnet die vom Content Provider an sie gezahlte Lizenz dann an den Künstler ab.

Inwiefern machen sich Webmaster generell haftbar, wenn Sie Tracks oder auch DJ Mixe online veröffentlichen, und was machen zum Beispiel Communities wie MySpace, dass sie es dürfen? Zahlen die für jeden gestreamten Track in einem MySpace Profil eine Gebühr an eine Verwertungsgesellschaft ? Content Provider, die ohne eine entsprechende Lizenz Kompositionen zum Download anbieten, begehen eine Urheberrechtsverletzung, die zivilrechtliche und strafrechtliche Folgen haben kann. Durch „user generated content“ in Plattformen wie YouTube, MySpace etc. werden häufig Urheberrechte Dritter verletzt. Die GEMA geht hiergegen wie etwa im Falle Rapidshare mit einstweiligen Verfügungen vor. Wie kann ein Veranstalter dafür sorgen, dass sein GEMA-Beitrag an die nationale Rechteverwertungsgesellschaft auch den Künstlern zugute kommt, die bei ihm auf der Party spielen bzw. den Komponisten, die gespielt werden? Er sollte seine Party bei der GEMA anmelden und dort eine Titeliste mit der DJ-Setlist abgeben. Wenn DJs mit einem PC auflegen, dann sollte dies auch keinen Aufwand darstellen. Der DJ und der Club unterstützt damit auch die Komponisten/Künstler, die wirklich bei diesen Veranstaltungen gespielt werden. Das Geld landet dann nicht nach Maßgabe irgendwelcher uralten „Schlager-Evergreens“ in einer „black box“ bei der GEMA. Außerdem hat die GEMA endlich folgendes Verfahren eingeführt: Die GEMA lizenziert mechanische Musikwiedergaben in Diskotheken nach dem Tarif M-U III 1c. Zu den insgesamt in Deutschland ca. 3.500 erfassten Tanzflächen zählen überwiegend Diskotheken, aber auch andere Tanzbetriebe mit unterschiedlichen Musikangeboten.

Artists that publish their own music these days, are quickly caught up in a dense legal jungle. Especially in times of digitalisation and ever growing globalisation of music markets, the legal aspects of releasing music are quickly becoming increasingly complex. Performance rights society, such as the German GEMA (equivalent to the PRC in the UK), are now suddenly in a situation where they find themselves in direct competition with other European agencies. This development also extends to social online communities within the web 2.0, which also strongly affect the copy right situation of music. German event organisers now have the possibility to support musicians in the trance scene. Instead of shifting more funds in the direction of commercial artists, they can now increase trance artists’ income instead, by making use of a special rate within mandatory GEMA payments, provided they are supported by DJs supplying track sheets of the tracks they played. We interviewed Hamburg’s media lawyer Andres Heyn on the topic of music legislation and copyright, seeing how GEMA and its associated topics are uncharted waters for many trance producers. What can a company like GEMA do for artists today? When does joining an organisation like the GEMA make sense for an artist? The GEMA controls the rights of compositions (not recordings!) for their members. With this contract one commits to a more or less functional, but rigid system, for a long-term time period. When one becomes a member of the GEMA, from this point on they take care of providing licenses, as well as controlling the use of compositions within their data base. A membership makes sense if commercial use of the track(s) is expected, (for example income from radio, TV, record sales,

online use) that are beyond the artists own scope of control. The GEMA rate for music-on-demand services can be read in detail on the home page of the GEMA (www.gema. de), and specifies a licensing fee of 15% that the content provider (not the label!) has to pay based on the net user end price. The minimum fee is 0,125 cents for “paid” downloads, and 0,1875 cents for “free-ofcharge” downloads. This often leads to all kinds of problems with free promotions. Another complicated topic is that the GEMA licenses the rights for Germany, not the rest of Europe as a whole. This leads to profound legal issues with music content providers. The GEMA accounts the licensing fee given to them by the content provider to the artist.

In how far do web masters break the law by putting, for example, DJ mixes online, and what do communities such as MySpace do that they can do this? Do they pay a certain amount for every streamed track to a company like the GEMA? Content providers that make compositions available online, without having the appropriate license, are in breach of copyright laws, which might lead to civil and criminal prosecution. In many cases copyrights of third parties are infringed upon by so called “user generated content” on platforms such as You Tube, MySpace etc. In cases like this, the GEMA reacts with immediate short term legal actions as happened with Rapidshare, for example. If a copyright infringement exists on the side of content providers who make protected material available online it has to be evaluated case by case. Courts have not been able to reach a consensus on this matter. The crux of the problem is in how far access providers and platforms can be made liable for copyright infringing content provided by third parties. www.andresheyn.de

Raphael Huber from Switzerland is behind SubConsciousMind or short SCM. In 1997, with no musical or technical experience, he started to teach himself everything he needed to know. Since then he has released two albums and carefully developed his own edgy and characteristic style. His music confronts, touches, sometimes in unpleasant and very intensive ways. SCM does not write „tracks”, but „songs”. His songs describe something, tell a story and take the listener onto a psychedelic journey into an inner world. Assaf BBass, into trance for more than ten years, joined the project SKAZI after projects with Mental Orange from 1994 to 1997. Their first trance album, „Animal“, was released in September 2000 and was considered revolutionary in its sound and direction. The album dramatically exploded in the worldwide trance scene. Being previously in the local punk and hardcore scene, Skazi brought a new and innovative twist to trance, combining live guitar riffs and edgy, techy hardcore sounds. While the music did mesh with other Psy-Trance it also shared other elements with Hard House and Techno. Basis sind Rotary-Fader, ein Novum in diesem Sektor, auf einem nur noch halb so hohem Gehäuse.

This controller is based on rotary encoders, a new development in this sector, inside a case only half the height of the original VCI-100.

FESTIVALREVIEW: NEW YEARS EVE IN BRAZILS 2007/2008 Um die 8000 Fraggles kamen an Silvester zusammen, um das weltgrößte Psytrance-Festival Universo Paralello gemeinsam zu erleben. Fast 2000 Helfer, Musiker und Händler hatten alle Hände voll zu tun, um die tanzenden Aliens aus ganz Brasilien und der Welt ins All zu beamen. Um der unglaublichen Hitze entfliehen zu können, hatte die Crew für ausreichend Schattenplätze gesorgt, auf denen unzählige spannende Workshops angeboten wurden, z.B. Meditation, Poi-Spielen, oder schamanische Rituale. Auch diverse ganzheitliche Heilbehandlungen standen auf dem Programm. Ganz

ehrlich – im Festivalguide waren so viele Möglichkeiten genannt, dass es sicher einen Monat gedauert hätte, um alleine an den Wichtigsten teilzunehmen. Außerdem gab es da noch einen riesigen AbenteuerKid`s Space für die Zwerge, die noch viel zu jung für den Dancefloor waren.

Das UP findet an einem der schönsten brasilianischen Strände statt, in Pratigi Beach nahe des kleinen Städtchens Itubera, ca. 200 km südlich von Bahias Hauptstadt Salvador. Gefeiert wird am Rande einer riesigen Kokosnussplantage mit ca. 1000 Bäumen. In der Mitte dieses Paradieses im Nirgendwo errichteten die Veranstalter eine Trance-Stadt, der nur die Boom das Wasser reichen kann.

Probleme, keine Polizeieinsätze und keine nervenden Besucher zu Gesicht bekommen! Bemerkenswert war die Erste-HilfeStation, die mit ihren 20 separaten Räumen mehr wie ein Krankenhaus anmutete. Doktoren und Krankenschwestern des Krankenhauses bei Itupera kümmerten sich rührend um Sonnenbrände und Verletzungen.

Die Bauern der Umgebung trugen zum Gelingen enorm bei - mit Lebensmitteln, Schattenspendern, Shops und mit stets helfenden Händen. Das Festival ist ein wichtiger wirtschaftlicher Faktor für die

It was a crowd of about 8000 fraggles that got together at the world‘s biggest Psytrance Festival Universo Paralello for celebrating New Years Eve 2007. Almost 2000 working crowds, Brazilian and international artists and shop people served 6000 dancing aliens from Brazil as well as from all over the world. For the incredibly hot and sunny days lots of shade places in tents were provided _ for workshops

from all kinds of meditation, rituals to poi workshops. The psy-cinema showed interesting movies during the nights. All kinds of holistic treatments completed the festival‘s offers. The festival guide offered so many activities that a month would have been necessary to attend just the most important. Also the children area was kind of an adventurous place for the younger ones not yet ready for the dancefloors. The location of UP is set amidst a huge coconut plantation with 1000s of coconut trees directly at one of Brazils most beautiful beaches _ in Pratigi Beach near the small-town of Itubera, about 200 km south of Bahia‘s capital Salvador. In the middle of nowhere the organizers built a trance-city which can only be compared to the Boom Festival. The villagers around the festival are profiting from the festival a lot. From food supply, shadow makers, shops and helping hands _ the festival provides an important source of income for the whole region. Even the local police have the chance to work as life guards for the security of swimmers in the warm sea. The absence of any police bothering the fraggles is also a very convenient characteristic of this festival. In seven days at the festival I have seen no violence, no police, no problems and no annoying people. Also, the medical tent was more like a hospital with

almost 20 separate rooms for treating sunburns and injuries. Doctors and nurses guaranteed a medical care equal to the hospital in the near town of Itupera.One of the most amazing things at UP were the super-clean toilets and showers. I have not seen such a great service so far - not even at the biggest festivals in Europe. Hundreds of showers and toilets were cleaned permanently almost around the clock by a huge crowd of cleaning people. To wrap it up - UP 2007 is surely on a par with the best five psy-trance festivals in the world. The message of the festival - as organizer Alok (see picture bottom left side) stated - is to open up the trance scene to other scenes, to the world and spread the spirit around the globe - trance is to be found anywhere in the world and there are lots of docking opportunities to other forms of spirituality, social life forms and sustainable ways of living and experiencing the cosmic energy - and this should be realized without selling the psytrance spirit to sponsors and any form of commercialization - that is what the spirit of Universo Paralello is trying to show - with great success as anybody could see at this marvelous festival. Seit 2001 gab es bei Chrille (37) in Prenzlauer Berg immer einen Kaffee, Klatsch und Tratsch, und auf dem Sofa konnte man lauschen, wie andere an den Decks den neuesten Sound antesteten. Atisha Trancedance is back! Als das Hamburger Atisha zu Silvester 2005 schließen musste, starb für viele ein Stück Trancegeschichte, denn der Donnerstag war seit Anfang der Neunziger eine Clubinstitution. Seit April 2007 gibt es nun wieder ein Zuhause für die treuen Begleiter vom Atisha. Während das Team um Divya und Shunyam es sich in der neuen Location am Goldbekkanal so langsam gemütlich macht und weiter fleißig werkelt, haben bereits erste kleine Undercover-Trancepartys stattgefunden. Nun war es endlich an der Zeit und vom tiefsten Herzen ersehnt wieder ein regelmäßiges Event zu etablieren. Mit einem kleinen Unterschied: Der Trancedance rutscht vorläufig und regelmäßig, entgegen alter Gewohnheit, von „jeden Donnerstag“ auf „jeden ersten Samstag“ im Monat und wird zusätzlich durch Special Events in Erscheinung treten. Das Eröffnungsevent startet jedoch außerplanmäßig am 9. Februar mit Feuerhake, Dr.Berger und Drum-Begleitung von Jenssso vom Star Sounds Orchestra. Content wise this year focuses on „Roots and Future”. A highlight will surely be the podium discussions, which will host discussions on themes as diverse as the roots of the electronic music scene, as well as „Party and Politics”. We are sure interesting anecdotes will also be told in the process. All artists will waive their usual fee. Ich war auf einer langen Reise durch Europa und befand mich gerade in Spanien, als ich von ihm erfuhr und doch war ich sicher, ihn schon ewig zu kennen. Den Vater aller Gedanken und die Mutter allen Wissens. Einmal, vor langer Zeit, weit, weit weg an einem Strand in Thailand, da habe ich seine Stimme gehört. Ich war in einer schwierigen Situation, all die Entscheidungen, die man für sich treffen muss: Tütchen oder Drops, staubig oder feuchtfröhlich - oder doch vielleicht alles? Und dann war sie da, die Stimme in meinem Kopf, die da sagte „Wer das Unmögliche nicht wagt, wird das Mögliche nie erreichen!“. Wenn er über eine Wiese geht, wachsen hinter ihm Blumen. Seine Augen leuchten unter Schwarzlicht wie die Glut eines sechsblättrigen ... Na, Ihr wisst schon. Er sagt nicht: „Ihr müsst!“ Oder: „Wenn nicht, dann ...!“ Nein er befiehlt nicht, er hört zu, sagt, was er denkt, und hat immer Rat & Tat parat. Er ist mit allen Wassern gewaschen, allen erdenklichen Mittelchen ausgerüstet, erfüllt fast jeden Wunsch und in seinem Holster steckt immer dene Pepgun. eine gela-

Nun gibt es Leute, die behaupten, Featureman wäre in uns allen, also ein Teil von jedem. Dem stimme ich zu, das ist aber nur die halbe Wahrheit. Natürlich ist in jedem von uns ein bißchen Featureman, aber der Featureman schwebt nun mal über dem Featureteam und bewacht von dort oben.

Kontakt Ich sitze also so da und denke nach, meine Gedanken drehen sich im Kreis und ich komme nicht weiter. Also erstmal Einen gerollt und Fünfe gerade sein lassen. Als meine Gedanken langsam immer leichter werden, klingelt plötzlich das Telefon. Ich nehme ab und höre zuerst eine liebliche, fast engelsgleiche Stimme. Sie sagt, sie müsse mich auf ein extrem wichtiges Gespräch vorbereiten und ich solle gut zuhören (Später erfuhr ich, dass es Featurepussy war). Und dann war ER dran. Eine Stimme, geschmeidig wie Jägermeister und scharf wie eine Klinge. Er sprach ruhig und gleichmäßig, ja fast wie im Gebet. Er sagte, er habe mein Rufen erhört, er wisse, dass ich mich in Spanien befände und er werde kommen, um mich zu retten.

„Wie wunderbar . . .“ Er sagte, er werde mich an einen Ort führen wo es auf all meine Fragen Antworten geben würde. Dieser verwunschene Ort nenne sich „Carlitos Bay“ - und wenn wir von dort zurückkehrten, würden meine Gedanken so rein sein wie Havanna Club. Wir verabredeten uns also für den 14. September. Ich sollte um 08:45 Uhr an einem Treffpunkt in Alicante sein.

I was on a long journey through Europe, and happened to be in Spain when I first heard about him, but nonetheless I was sure I had known him for ages, the father of all thoughts, and the mother of all knowing.

Once, a long time ago, on a beach far away in Thailand, I heard his voice for the first time. I was in a difficult situation: all the decisions one has to make... a joint or a drop, dusty or happily wet – or perhaps everything at the same time? Then it appeared, the voice inside my head which said: “If you don’t take a chance on the impossible, you will never reach what’s possible!” When he wanders across a field, flowers grow in his footsteps. In UV light his eyes shine like the blaze of a six leafed ... Well, you know... He does not say: „You must!“ Or: If you don’t then...!“ No, he does not hand out orders. He listens, says what he thinks, and always has good advice ready, and is willing to help out. He has wandered across many paths in this world, carries all sorts of imaginable potions, makes almost every wish come true, and always holsters a loaded pepgun.

He said, he had heard me calling out to him, and that he knew I was in Spain. He would come to rescue me.

Global Psychedelic forum in Basel Im Januar 2006 fand das internationale Symposium „LSD – Sorgenkind und Wunderdroge“ aus Anlass des 100. Geburtstags des LSD-Entdeckers Dr. Albert Hofmann statt. In diesem Jahr gibt es nun die lang erwartete zweite Auflage des LSD Symposiums. Das Psychedelic Forum war die weltweit grösste Veranstaltung zum Themenkreis „Veränderung und Erweiterung des menschlichen Bewusstseins“ mit über 2000 Besuchern aus 37 Ländern. Bereits 2006 waren wir mit einer Abordnung vom mushroom magazine auf den Spuren der Psychonauten unterwegs und sind aus dem Staunen kaum heraus gekommen. Am beeindruckensten war natürlich Albert Hofmann an seinem einhundertsten Geburtstag, der uns in allen Einzelheiten erzählt hat, wie sich das mit dem LSD damals zugetragen hat. Als Schirmherr der Veranstaltung wird

er uns natürlich auch in diesem Jahr wieder beehren. Überhaupt hat sich die gesamte Psychedelische Prominenz dort eingefunden, da waren die Leute vom Ufo in New York und von der Indica Gallery in London – das sind die beiden Orte von denen sich die weltweite LSD Bewegung in den sechzigern entwickelt hat – oder der Mann mit dem John Lennon sein erstes LSD genommen hat, eine damalige Freundin von Tim Leary, aber auch hochrangige Wissenschaftler wie Anne und Alexander „Sascha“ Shulgin, die seit über 30 Jahren Naturdrogen entdecken, probieren und untersuchen. Sie sind die Autoren der Bücher Pihkal und Tihkal / A Chemical Love Story Zu den unzähligen Seminaren und Diskussionsforen gab es Musik vom Star Sound Orchester, dem Akasha Projekt und Guru Guru (die gerade zufällig in der Nähe waren) sowie Ausstellungen aus der Geschichte des LSD und verschiedene Vorführungen.

Alleine das Begleitprogramm aus Ausstellungen, Filmen und Vorträgen ist nach meiner Meinung die Reise wert und wird das Programm von 2006 auf jeden Fall noch übertreffen. Die Liste der Referenten spricht ebenfalls für sich selbst und natürlich sind auch wieder ein paar Leute aus der Tranceszene dabei, die nach meiner Einschätzung die jüngste große Bewegung der Bewusstseinsforschung ist. Nunja, eigentlich wollte ich ja mehr über das kommende Symposium schreiben, aber alle News, Infos und Fakten findet Ihr ja bereits auf www. mushroom-online.com oder auf den Seiten des Psychedelik Forums unter www.psychedelik.info. Egal, ob das kommende Symposium ähnlich beeindruckend wird wie 2006, ich bin auf jeden Fall der Meinung, dass kein Psychonaut, der etwas auf sich hält diese Veranstaltung verpassen sollte.

News Magic Mushrooms in NL Neuigkeiten für alle, die sich für das Verbot von Pilzen in den Niederlanden interessieren. Magic Mushrooms werden für die nächsten fünf Monate auf jeden Fall weiter legal bleiben und die Chancen stehen gut, dass sie auch in Zukunft nicht verboten werden. Der Niederländische Gesundheitsminister wollte die Pilze in einem Schnellschuss verbieten, allerdings hat das Parlament eine Anhörung von Wissenschaftlern verlangt. Diese Wissenschaftler haben schon einmal aufgrund ihres Gutachtens ein Verbot von Magic Mushrooms verhindert. Möglicherweise wird der Markt in den Niederlanden reguliert, und es dürfen in Zukunft nur noch autorisierte Händler Pilze verkaufen, aber das sollte ja kein wirkliches Problem darstellen.

For all of you who are wondering about the developments of the legal status of magic mushrooms in the Netherlands; here is an update. Mushrooms will stay legal for at least five more months. Chances are getting higher that mushrooms will not even become banned at all. Even though the Dutch minister of Health wants to ban mushrooms, there will now be a parliamenty hearing. Scientists and health professionals will give their opinions. Most of those people see more truth in well performed research than in some badly tripping politicians. It

may well be that the parliament will ask for regulation instead of a ban. Regulation will mean that not everyone can sell mushrooms anymore; only specialized shops that have a mushroom diploma. (Sonic)

In January of 2006 the international symposium „LSD – problem child and miracle drug” took place commemorating the 100th birthday of LSD’s discoverer Dr. Albert Hoffmann. This year, the long awaited second round of the LSD symposium will take place. The psychedelic forum of 2006 was the largest event focussing on the theme: “Changes and Expansion of Human Consciousness” with over 2000 visitors from 37 countries. Already in 2006 a delegation from mushroom magazine went on the trail of the psychonauts, and was perpetually in awe of the new developments presented at the forum. The most impressive lecture was of course by Albert Hoffmann, who on his 100th birthday described in detail how LSD came into being. As the patron of the event, he will also honour us with his presence this year. As a matter of fact, all of the psychedelic notables found their way to the symposium. The people from Ufo in New York, and of the Indica Gallery in London, were there to name a few. These are two locations from which the world wide LSD movement developed in the sixties. Another illustrious guest was the man who took LSD for the first time with John Lennon, a girlfriend of Tim Leary in the sixties. High ranking scientists were also on site, for example Anne and Alexander

some of the most renowned specialists in this field, and of course a few representatives of the trance scene, which in my estimation is the youngest sizeable movement focussing on the expansion of consciousness, will also be there. They are the authors of the books Pihkal and Tihkal / A Chemical Love Story. Internettalk about the cu Nach einem halben Jahrhundert wissenschaftlicher Forschung im Feld der Psychedelika haben wir neulich mit Omananda im Internet ein interessantes Gespräch über Drogenpolitik gehabt. Omananda haben wir im Jahr 2002 bei unseren Recherchen zur DVD „Liquid Crystal Vision“ kennen gelernt, da er der Produzent des Filmes ist, in welchem Künstler wie Alex Grey, Raja Ram, System 7, Goa Gil und viele andere die Hintergründe der Psychedelic-Trance Kultur ans Licht bringen. Luna: Wenn man sich einmal den aktuellen Umgang mit Drogen ansieht, fällt auf, dass Drogen per se immer sofort als böse und schlecht deklariert werden. Woran liegt das Deiner Meinung nach? Omananda: In der allgemeinen Diskussion um Drogen fehlt mir immer noch der entscheidende Ansatz einer Unterscheidung zwischen medizinischen Drogen und den Drogen, die gesellschaftlich enormen Schaden anrichten, Alkoholismus und andere stoffgebundene Abhängigkeiten, die Hauptgrund für Gewalt, Fehlverhalten, Unfälle und Tod sind. Im vergeblichen Ver-

such, jeglichen Drogenkonsum auszurotten, ist den verantwortlichen Regierungen das Auge für die therapeutischen Fähigkeiten der uralten Pflanzenmedizinen, völlig entfallen. Luna: Nicht nur der Regierung ist dieses Wissen verloren gegangen, auch der Allgemeinbürger ist im Generalfall nicht aufgeklärt dieser Thematik gegenüber. Omananda: Die Öffentlichkeit hat in all diese Vorgänge wenig Einsicht, aber ich würde es als einen wichtigen evolutionären Schritt betrachten diese heilenden Substanzen, die bewiesene spirituellen Effekte haben für diejenigen legal erhältlich machen, die sich dafür wirklich interessieren, denn wir sind alle mit einem natürlichen Recht in die Welt geboren, die Wahrheit vollständig zu erfassen und sie zu verinnerlichen. Manchmal bedeutet das bis an die Grenzen des Bewussten zu gehen, um sein wirkliches Selbst wieder zu entdecken. Luna: Dies birgt allerdings auch Unangenehmes wie die Auflösung des Egos in sich. Omananda: Nahtoderfahrungen oder die Auflösung des Egos zu erleben sind gebräuchliche und oft entscheidende Faktoren, um die Wahrheit wirklich zu verstehen. Mit dieser visionären Medizin zu experimentieren kann bedeuten, ins Auge der Unendlichkeit zu blicken. Ich würde das aber keinem Ungeschulten empfehlen, das einfach mal so allein auszuprobieren. Luna: Was ist dein Wusch für die Zukunft? Omananda: Eine freie, heile Welt, in welcher wir uns untereinander verstehen, vertrauen, lieben, und zusammenarbeiten als ein globales Team, dass das Paradies aufbaut. Und natürlich Aufklärung und Reform in der Drogenpolitik. Das ist einer meiner Wünsche für die Erde schon seit langem.

Omananda who produced the unique film, where artists like; Alex Grey, Raja Ram, System 7, Goa Gil and many others share insights about the aims of global psychedelic trance culture has unique views and much direct experience on this subject. Luna: If we take a look at the current dealings with drugs, you can see that drugs seem to be declared too fast as bad. What do you think is the reason for that? Omananda: The war on drugs has been unable to discriminate between medicine and drug in its efforts to address a very real problem of social deconstruction through alcoholism and drug addiction that represent the leading cause of illegal behavior, accidents, and death. The urgency to eradicate all illegal drug use has blinded government officials to the clearly beneficial and therapeutic potential of ancestral plant-medicines and more than half a century of Western psychedelic sciences. Luna: Not only the government has lost their knowledge also it seems that most of the people on our planet do not really know something about it. Omananda: The general public has little knowledge about this issue. If well informed and legally allowed to, the people themselves could choose to awaken to the healing potential and spiritually enhancing experiences that most often result from the responsible and well-educated participation with these most powerful substances. Many new discoveries of potent psychedelic drugs, such as LSD have created entire sub-cultures and great parties! Yes, we are all born with our natural birthright to fully understand `the

truth`. Sometimes this means that we have to go to the `edge` and see for ourselves. Luna: But are there not still some risks left? Egodeath or near-death experiences? Omananda: Ego-death or near-death experiences are common and often essential factors to really comprehend the mystery. Experimenting with these sacred visionary medicines can be a way to look into the eyes of the infinite. However, I would not recommend to experiment with these most powerful substances yourself, if you are already initiated into these methods of intense self-realization. Ideally, you would seek out a Shaman who can guide you to these states safely. Luna: What is your desire for the future? A free world for everyone, where we understand each other for who we really are so that we can trust, love, respect, tolerate, and work together for the same purpose with joy in our hearts and every action, to build paradise on our beautiful planet EARTH. Since many years, my prayers have been going towards international drug reforms and a change in drug policy towards intelligent education and legalization with an amnesty for the psychedelic drug prisoners. Dio - the trance scientist Der Startschuss in den ab Februar 1998 begonnenen deutschlandweiten Vertrieb des mushroom fiel mit einem amtlichen Astral Projection Interview. Wissenschaftlich war das Interview von Kernel-Goa Alan Frostik mit dem kalifornischen Tranceforscher Dennis Wier vom Schweizer Trance Institut. Einen kleinen Auszug daraus liest Du auf der rechten Seite. In der Partysektion gab es erstmals einen Vorplaner bis in den Sommer hinein, damit sich die Veranstalter Ihre Partys nicht auf die gleichen Termine legen. In Zeiten, in denen erst wenige einen Internetzugang hatten und die spontane Wochenendplanung oft telefonisch über die mushroom hotline erfolgte, war dies ein Fortschritt zur EventKoordinierung innerhalb der Community. »Trancezustände sind weit verbreitet. Es gibt den alltäglichen Trance beim Bücher lesen, tagträumen oder fernsehen und den selteneren mystischen Trance bei Yogis, Magiern, Hexen und Schamanen. Trommeln, maschieren, Liebe machen, monotone Musik – all das kann Trance erzeugen. In all diesen Dingen finden wir die Loops als tranceerzeugendes Mittel. Trance kann aber auch viel komplizierter sein, z.B. in der Meditation, Hypnose, bestimmten Formen von Abhängigkeiten und Geisteskrankheiten oder visionären, mystischen Bewusstheitszuständen. [...] Trance Partys sind eher hypnotisch und von daher weniger geeignet Erleuchtung zu erzeugen. Erleuchtung beinhaltet, dass man die eigene Trance kontrollieren kann. Bei hypnotischem Trance ist dies nicht der Fall. Es besteht also eine gewisse Gefahr an Trancemissbrauch auf den Partys, beispielsweise durch gewisse Texte in der Musik. [...] Die Möglichkeit Trance in Partys zu erzeugen und zu benutzen sind sehr vielfältig. Die gesamte Athmosphäre ist entscheidend, ob und wie hypnotisch das Set wirkt. Will man gezielt eine bestimmte Energie bewirken, ist eine entsprechende Fokussierung zum Beispiel auf bestimmte Themen bei der Dekoration oder der Location aus trancetheoretischer Sicht notwendig.” »Trance like states are widely present, for

example while day dreaming, or watching television, as well as the more seldom mystical trance states which Yogis, magicians, witches and Shamans experience. Drum playing, making love, monotonous music – all this can induce trance like states. In all these cases, we find loops as trance inducing tools. Trance can also be a lot more complex, for example, during meditation, hypnosis, certain forms of dependency, as well as mental disorders, and visionary, mystical states of consciousness [...] Trance parties tend to be oriented towards hypnosis, and are therefore intrinsically less suited to inducing enlightenment. Enlightenment means that one can control ones state of trance. This is not the case with hypnotic trance. Therefore, there is a certain danger of misusing trance at parties, for example by using certain lyrics in the music. [...] There are many possibilities for inducing, and using trance like states of consciousness at parties. The overall atmosphere is crucial in determining if, and how trance inducing a set can be. If one would like to achieve a certain energy state, certain recurring themes in the decoration, or within the location are necessary.”
