Hello my funky fellows ! Ganz schön kalt geworden da draußen! Da macht man es sich am besten mit einer Tasse Glühwein und ein paar Plätzchen im Warmen gemütlich. So lässt sich dann auch entspannt auf das vergangene Jahr zurück blicken, es ist ja wieder ne Menge passiert... Im April ist ein wichtiger Charakter unserer Szene verstorben. Zwar hat Albert Hofmann niemals eine Platte veröffentlicht oder ein Festival veranstaltet- jedoch hat seine Entdeckung des LSD die gesamte Psychedelic Bewegung begründet. Doch auch ohne den guten Doktor war der Sommer ziemlich trippig und konnte mit durchaus amtlichem Wetter und einer Reihe hervorragender Festivals überzeugen. Was sich auf den Erwachsenenspielplätzen musikalisch und sonst so getan hat, könnt ihr in unserem großen Jahresrückblick nachlesen. Apropos Musik: Noch läuft unser Producer Contest, wir sind also weiterhin gespannt auf eure Sounds! Was ist sonst noch passiert? Ach ja, meine Wenigkeit, Roberdo, ist zur Redaktion hinzugestoßen. In April an important character of our scene passed by. Albert Hofmann never released any track neither organized a festival- but his discovery of LSD originated the whole Psychedelic movement. But also without the good doctor it became a very trippy summer with quite nice weather and some wonderful festivals. What happened on the adult playgrounds around the globe in general and in a musical point of view, you will find in our big endof-year review. Apropos music: Our Producer Contest is still running, so we are looking forward for your sounds! What else happened? Well, my humble self, Roberdo, joined the editorial team. Beside music and party its all about photography, traveling and surfing in my life. We wish you an excellent end-ofyear time, a merry X-Mas and a kicking start into the new year!

2008 the status quo of the trance community Jahresendzeit: Die Zeit der großen Dunkelheit und Kälte, die Zeit der glühweinseeligen Hektik in den Einkaufstraßen und die Zeit der Jahresrückblicke in den Medien. Also habe auch ich bei einer guten Tasse Tee das Jahr 2008 Revue passieren lassen und außerdem ein paar Musikerkollegen um ihre Statements zu diesem Thema gebeten. Was ist musikalisch so passiert, welche stilistischen Entwicklungen gab es? Welche Veröffentlichungen und Newcomer waren wirklich bemerkenswert und warum? Und wie reagierten die Labels auf den anhaltend schwierigen Musikmarkt? Ein musikalischer Trend, der sich schon im Vorjahr deutlich abzeichnete ist vollends zum Durchbruch gekommen: Techno war ein ganz großes Thema. Deutlich zu hören war dies auf den Alternative Floors von Festivals und Parties: Oft unterschieden sich die DJ Sets hier nur

Which releases and newcomers were the most promising ones and why? And how did the labels react against the ongoing difficulties on the music market?
A musical trend which already showed during the previous year has come to an entire breakthrough: Techno was a huge issue. Es sei den, sie wurden von DJs wie Gianni Vitiello oder Marcus Carp aufgelegt, die ursprünglich aus der Trance Szene kommen, dann jedoch zum Techno wechselten und nun mit dieser Musik wieder auf Trance Festivals gebucht werden. Nun gut, Progressive Trance hatte von je her eine gewisse Nähe zu Techno, da ist es irgendwo logisch, dass es früher oder später zu gewissen Überscheidungen kommt. Aber was ich interessant finde, ist die Tatsache, dass auch Musikerkollegen und Labels, die eigentlich für herzhaften, schnellen Psy Trance bekannt sind, mittlerweile eine Affinität zu Techno entwickeln. Es ist wirklich erstaunlich, wer plötzlich alles auf diesen Sound abfährt!

Well, at least Progressive Trance always had a certain connection to Techno so its kind of logical development that there are some overlaps now. But what was very interesting for me is the fact, that even many of those DJs and labels, who are well known for their rather twisted psychedelic sounds, now have an affinity for Techno. Its really astonishing how many people dig this sound now!

Was mich echt ankotzt sind die Künstler, die Geld für ihren Auftritt oder ihre Veröffentlichung sehen wollen und ihre Musik an gecrackter Software geschraubt haben, für die sie niemals bezahlt haben! Diese Leute geben der Musikindustrie nichts zurück und sollten kein Geld verdienen! 128bpm has become the new 145bpm, mainly because a lot of Psy-Trance artist has also nowadays a Techno act. What makes me sick is that a lot of the Artist are asking money to perform their live-acts or dj-set on parties with music made from »cracked programs« or illegal music downloads which they never paid for, so why should they earn money when they don‘t put any money back to the music industry.
Aber natürlich gab es auch eine ganze Menge Künstler und Releases, welche sich ziemlich eindeutig als Psy Trance etikettieren lassen. Im Bereich Progressive fiel zum Beispiel der israelische Act Quantize durch seinen druckvollen und positiven Sound auf. Dieser Act veröffentlichte übrigens vor ein paar Tagen zwei chillige Drum`N`Bass Nummern... Ebenfalls aus Israel stammen AKD, welche durch ihre sphärischen, deepen Sounds zu überzeugen wussten. Nicht wirklich ein Newcomer, aber dennoch beliebt wie nie zuvor war Neelix, der mit seinem letzten Album ebenfalls neue Wege beschritt, indem er sich vom Songwriting inspirieren ließ. Freunde der schnelleren Gangart wurden insbesondere von Krunch, Toxi-

Also the very Techno- influenced Perfect Stranger album is regarded to be one of the most outstanding releases this year. But of course there have been also quite some artists and releases which can be labeled as Psy Trance pretty distinctly. Quantize from Israel impressed the audience with their powerful and positive Progressive sounds. By the way: This act just released two chilly Drum’n’Bass tracks a few days ago… Another promising act from Israel is AKD who delivered some very deep and atmospheric Trance tracks. Not really a newcomer but nevertheless popular like never before was Neelix, who also broke new grounds with his last album by getting inspired from songwriting. Friends of faster sounds were pleased especially by Krunch, Toxical and Phobia. All together FullOn developed into the direction of Pop music, unfortunately at the expense of the psychedelic moments. Quite some people criticized the resulting superficiality and a lack of deepness. Referring to this development of the music, which aims more and more the body and not the mind any more, also the scene changed: Parties got more serious, less smiling visitors had been seen and the atmosphere turned to be more

Endes sind wir uns in einem einig: Die Leute, die auf Trance Parties kommen tun dies immer noch um Spaß und einfach eine gute Zeit zu haben. Das zeichnet unsere Szene nach wie vor aus und macht sie zu etwas besonderem! Besorgniserregend ist hingegen die Situation jener, die uns mit unserer essentiellsten Droge versorgen: Die Musiklabels sind stark vom anhaltenden Trend zum file sharing und Raubkopieren betroffen. Selbst bei großen, etablierten Labels reichen die Einnahmen aus CD Verkäufen oft gerade noch aus, um die Produktion zu finanzieren. Als Reaktion darauf wird immer mehr Material nur noch digital im Internet veröffentlicht, was einerseits die Produktionskosten minimiert, andererseits jedoch die perfekte Vorraussetzung für file sharing schafft: MP3s... Was auf CD veröffentlicht wird, muss wirklich etwas qualitativ ganz besonders hochwertiges sein. Hinter der Einführung des neuen Mediums „Compact Stick“ steht die Idee, das Release mit zusätzlichen Tracks, Bildern und Videos anzureichern und so attraktiver zu machen. Andere sehen im klassischen Musikmarkt gar keine Zukunft mehr und plädieren für eine lizenzfreie Veröffentlichung der Musik, da die Künstler ohnehin nur noch durch Auftritte Geld verdienen können. Bei all den neuen Trends und Entwicklungen im Jahre 2008 ist und bleibt eines entscheidend: Hauptsache ihr hattet eine gute Zeit!

atmos Zwar wurde Thomasz Balicki während des vergangenen Jahres auf vielen Festivalbühnen gesichtet und rockte zahllose Partys rund um den Planeten, jedoch blieb es in Punkto neuer Veröffentlichungen sehr ruhig um den schwedischen Meister des Progressive Trance. Um so erfreuter fielen die Reaktionen aus, als kürzlich verschiedene Gerüchte von einer offiziellen Ansage bestätigt wurden: Es wird noch vor Ende des Jahres ein neues Atmos Album geben! Kurz vor seinem Paragliding- Urlaub in Indien erwischte ich ihn für ein Interview... Wie schon das erste Atmos Album wird nun auch „Tour de Trance“ auf Spiral Tracks erscheinen. Aber auch sonst gibt es Parallelen zu jenem sensationellen Debüt: „Das neue Album ist im Prinzip in die gleiche Richtung produziert wie mein erstes, Headcleaner. Was diesmal jedoch grundsätzlich anders ist, ist die Tatsache, dass ich nicht die Standard- Trance Sounds verwendet habe, die man sonst von meinen Produktionen kennt. Ich habe die
gleiche Art von Songs wie auf dem Headcleaner Album produziert, jedoch mit Minimal, Electro House und Techno Elementen gearbeitet. Anstatt viele Delays und Effekte einzusetzen ist das Arrangement diesmal eher trocken.“ Für Atmos ist es als Produzent essentiell, sich stets weiter zu entwickeln: „Es mag ja sein, dass ich schon vor 8 Jahren meinen eigenen Sound gefunden habe, aber man muss im Kopf behalten, dass man sich als Musiker ständig weiter entwickelt! Wenn ich an dem Sound kleben geblieben wäre, den ich vor 8 Jahren produziert habe, dann wäre ich heute vermutlich einer dieser „Dinosaurier“... Anstatt immer wieder Old School Sachen zu machen, habe ich mich diesmal auf den aktuellen Sound bezogen“. Dabei versteht Thomasz Balicki seine Musik nach wie vor als Trance. Für das nächste Jahr plant er mit einem Nebenprojekt auch ein paar stilistische Abstecher in andere Genres, was dann jedoch zunächst inkognito geschehen soll. Doch nicht nur vom Sound her ist „Tour de Trance“ auf der Höhe der Zeit: Als eine der ersten Veröffentlichungen wird dieses Album außer auf CD auch auf dem neuen Medium „Compact Stick“ erscheinen. Diese USB Sticks bieten deutlich mehr Speicherplatz als eine CD, welcher für zahlreiche Extras genutzt wird: 5 zusätzliche Songs, 1 Remix von The Delta, Videomaterial von der Samothraki 2003 mit bisher unveröffentlichter Musik sowie Bildschirmschoner und hochauflösende Wallpapers zum ausdrucken. Atmos, der in seiner Jugend übrigens von
deutschen Heavy Metal Bands begeistert war, kommentiert dieses neue Medium so: „Ich bin ein großer Filmfreund. Aber ich habe kaum Filme gekauft, bis die DVD auf den Markt kam. Mit den vielen Extras wie Interviews, alternativem Ende usw. war es plötzlich attraktiv zu sammeln. Das gleiche könnte für Compact Sticks gelten: Ich denke, wenn man den Leuten mehr gibt als eine CD, die jeder brennen kann, werden zumindest einige wieder Interesse bekommen, das Release auch zu kaufen.“ Zum Abschied gibt uns Atmos ein Zitat der Beastie Boys mit auf den Weg: „Sei aufrichtig zu dir selbst und du wirst niemals stürzen!“ Thomasz Balicki has been seen on many festival stages and rocked countless parties around the globe in 2008 but concerning new releases it got pretty quiet around the Swedish master of Progressive Trance. The more euphoric the reactions became when lately various rumors were confirmed by an official announcement: There will be a new Atmos album before the year ends! Just before he left to India for a paragliding holiday I caught him for an interview... Just like the very first Atmos album also “Tour de Trance” will now appear on Spiral Tracks. And there are more parallels to that fantastic debut, which was ahead of its time in 2000: “The new album was basically written in the same direction

as my first album Headcleaner. The only thing that is really different is that I did not use the standard Trance soundscapes that you are used to hear in my songs. So I wrote the same kind of songs I used to do on Headcleaner except it has a Minimal / Electro House / Techno soundscape. Instead of using a lot of delay and effects I made a pretty dry arrangement.” As a producer it is essential for Atmos to develop his style: “Maybe I found my style 8 years ago. That’s one thing but you have to remember that as a musician there will be a time when your soundscape changes again, which means that if I would stick to produce my music as I did 8 years ago, I would probably be one of those “dinosaurs” right now... My approach was to write the music I like, write the music I am known for, but instead of doing it the old school way like Trance should sound, I did it and recorded it more analogue and made it sound like the popular Techno from today.” Thomasz Balicki still regards his music to be Progressive Trance. He also plans some experiments in other genres for the next year using a moniker but wants to keep incognito then. But not only from the style of sound “Tour de Trance” is up-to-date: As one of the very first releases it is published not only on CD but also on the new medium “compact stick”. This USB stick features distinctly more space then a CD does. So this version of the album will contain a
lot of extra material: 5 additional tracks, 1 remix by The Delta, a video from Samothraki festival 2003 which also includes unreleased music, screen savers and wallpapers that you can print out in poster size. Atmos, who listened to German Heavy Metal bands in his youth by the way, comments on on this new medium: “I compare it to one thing: I used to be a movie freak and I still am. But I did not buy a lot of movies until the DVD came out. As soon as the DVD came out you could buy the same movie you could buy on VHS before but you got extra material like interviews, alternative ending etc. I think if you give people a little more then the standard CD which everybody can burn at home right now, I think a couple of people more will start collecting records again.” For farewell Atmos gives us a quote by the Beatie Boys: “Be true to yourself and you will never fail!”

Jocid Der Umzug von Amsterdam nach Rotterdam im vergangenen Jahr bedeutete eine große Inspiration für Joshua Gablan: Sein neues Album “The Machine” reflektiert den Vibe dieser Stadt, die nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg komplett neu aufgebaut werden musste und sich zu einer sehr außergewöhnlichen Metropole entwickelte. Und so ist auch der Sound auf dem Album eine neue Mischung aus Full On und Dark. Einige interessante Tracks sind in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Berliner Act Ectogasmics und der befreundeten Gothic Band Sophya entstanden. Joshua liebt es, in der Nacht zu spielen und tags zu tanzen, daher sind die Produktionen, die er bereits auf zahlreichen Dancefloors des Planeten präsentierte, stets hart und treibend. Inspiriert wird er von Künstlern wie Absolom, Penta, Human Blue oder Digital Talk aber auch durch Filme oder Jam Sessions. Wenn Joshua neben dem Musikproduzieren, einem Teilzeitjob und dem Herumtouren noch Zeit findet, steht er auf Snowboarden oder es sich einfach mit seinen Lieben gemütlich zu machen.

Ancient Beach Als Nozomi Nakamura vor einem Jahr sein Debütalbum “Another Heaven” veröffentlichte, stieß er damit auf sehr positives Feedback in der Szene in und um Tokio und wurde mit seiner Musik zu dem größten Festival Japans eingeladen. Auf „Cloned Heaven“ ist er nun zurück mit einigen Remixes und einem komplett neuen Song. Nozomi bemerkte, dass sich seine Fähigkeiten als Produzent seit dem letzten Album deutlich verbessert haben, so dass er heute seinen Gefühle viel präziser in Musik umsetzen kann. Vor diesem Hintergrund nahm er nochmals die Stimmung des letzten Albums auf und überarbeitete die Tracks komplett. Das Resultat ist sehr kräftiger und treibender Full On, welcher jedoch stets harmonisch bleibt und einen gewissen Humor behält. Dieser Stil reflektiert die Mentalität der meisten Japaner, die freundlich und respektvoll gegenüber Fremden sind, es lieben zu feiern jedoch Aggressionen und Kämpfe vermeiden. Und so ist es für Ancient Beach auch das größte Kompliment, wenn die Leute lächeln und zu seiner Musik tanzen.

Exotisch, mit Meer, Palmen und Strand, an einer malerischen Bucht, wird der Jahreswechsel zu etwas ganz Besonderem werden. Das diesjährige PsyRock Festival ist genau das Richtige, um diesen Traum wahr werden zu lassen! Auf der kanarischen Insel „La Gomera“, die für ihren HippieCharme bekannt ist, stehen 6 Tage Progressive Trance auf dem Programm. Vom Campingplatz kommt man durch die lang gezogene Bananenplantage direkt zum Trancefloor. Diese liegt auf einer gewaltigen Terrasse direkt am Strand. Nach der Illegalisierung von Ephedra Produkten (oft in Herbal Ecstasy enthalten) bedeutet das Verbot von Pilzen nun einen weitere Einschränkung des Rechts auf Rausch.
