Spring… and the angels sing! Endlich ist es soweit: Die bessere Hälfte des Jahres ist zurück und mit ihr jener exzellente Hormoncocktail in unseren Venen und das große Sprießen und Blühen vor unseren Augen. Aber sprießen ist eigentlich nicht das richtige Wort, nein- Es wuchert geradezu da draußen! Einen buchstäblich pfundigen Beweis hierfür hältst du in deinen Händen… Der seit langem seitenstärkste mushroom schreit es uns geradezu entgegen: Die Trance Szene lebt wieder! Das haben wir spätestens gemerkt, als unsere Summer Festival Map in den ersten Stunden beeindruckende 4590-mal aufgerufen wurde! Und in Punkto Internet hat uns noch etwas anderes schwer beeindruckt: Die sozialen Medien. Es ist eine lange Geschichte, aber die User unserer mushroom Facebook Seite haben uns diesmal sogar in letzter Minute ein schickes Titelbild beschert. Schwerpunktmäßig geht es in dieser Ausgabe -war ja klar- um unsere sommerlichen Lieblingsbeschäftigungen, die wir aus ganz verschiedenen Perspektiven beleuchten. Und last but not least treibt auch unser Abo Service neue Blüten, und zwar sehr musikalische: Bis zu 10 CDs sind im Welcome Pack enthalten, zur Auswahl stehen ab sofort unter anderem ganz neue Compilations aus dem Hause YSE. Soweit für heute, zum Weiterlesen gibt es diesmal wirklich mehr als genug – See ya in sunshine! Finally she is back, at least on the Northern hemisphere: The better half of the year and with her that excellent hormone cocktail in our veins and the big sprouting and blooming in front of our eyes. But sprout is actually not the appropriate word, no- it is really grow-

ing rampant outside! A great prove for that is staring right in your face: The most extensive mushroom since quite some time shouts out loud: The Trance scene is alive! We realized that at the latest when our Summer Festival Map was retrieved impressing 4590 times already within the very first hours! And there is also another aspect of the Internet that really impressed us: Social media. It is a long story but in the end the users of our mushroom Facebook page even provided us with a stylish cover picture this time at the very last minute. The main emphasis of the available issue is put on our favourite summer weekend activities, of course. We throw light on them from many different angles. And last but not least also our subscription service is in new blossom, in a very musical blossom: You can chose up to 10 CDs when deciding for our Welcome Package, including really fresh compilations from YSE. Herzlichen Dank zunächst an alle, die unserem Aufruf zur Sommerumfrage gefolgt sind und uns ihre Vorlieben und Erwartungen bezüglich der diesjährigen Freiluftsaison verraten haben! Ansichten und Meinungen gibt es sicher so viele wie Psy Trance Liebhaber. Leider können wir dieses ausgesprochen vielfarbige Meinungsspektrum hier nur vereinfacht nachzeichnen; schließlich würde es nicht nur den Rahmen sprengen, sondern wäre auch schlichtweg unübersichtlich, die vielen hundert Meinungen nebeneinander zu stellen. Aber gerade hierin besteht ja auch der Sinn einer Umfrage oder Statistik: Trends aufzuzeigen, indem Einzelmeinungen zu Tendenzen zusammengefasst werden. Und Dank sozialer Medien wie Facebook können wir die Stimmen der Einzelnen dann ja doch noch hören! In diesem Sinne: Los geht es mit den Ergebnissen unserer Sommerumfrage! Wenn es um die Sommervorsorge geht, plant die Szene langfristig: Mehr als die Hälfte gaben an, einen Festivalbesuch lange im Voraus anzuvisie-

ren, der Rest setzt sich zu etwa gleichen Teilen aus Spontanen und Teilzeitspontanen zusammen. Die Verfügbarkeit von Urlaub scheint dabei eine eher untergeordnete Rolle zu spielen, denn nur etwa 6% benannten diesen Faktor als wichtigsten Grund, warum sie sich für ein Festival entscheiden. Wesentlich bedeutender ist das Lineup: Jeder Dritte macht seine Entscheidung für oder gegen einen Open Air Besuch von einem vielversprechenden Musikprogramm abhängig. Durchaus nachvollziehbar, denn im Endeffekt geht es bei diesen Manövern ja auch ums Tanzen. Ein spektakulärer Austragungsort ist ebenfalls attraktiv, 18% gaben dies als wichtigsten Grund für den Festivalbesuch an. Und für ebenso viele sind es möglichst viele Freunde, die zu treffen einen Open Air Besuch besonders interessant macht. Kerstin schrieb uns über Facebook: “Es geht nicht nur um Geld oder die Größe eines Festivals es geht um den Vibe und die Energie!” Damit spricht sie gewiss vielen aus der Seele. Und doch ist dies nur die eine Seite der Medaille; denn hinter diesem gefühlten Vibe und jener Energie steckt eben doch eine ganze Menge Kalkül und auch Geld - ich empfehle an dieser Hinsicht den Festival Inside Report in der vorliegenden Ausgabe.

Kein großes Thema mehr ist dagegen der ursprünglich vegetarische Geist von Trance Festivals: Nur 23% lehnen den Verkauf von Fleisch auf Open Airs ab, 37% ist dieses Thema gleichgültig und die Mehrheit von 40% bejaht ausdrücklich das Vorhandensein fleischlicher Gaumenfreuden. Ähnlich wie

bezüglich der Hygieneerwartungen zeigt sich hier ein Paradigmenwechsel, zumindest für jene, die schon etwas länger auf Psy Trance feiern. Was dagegen eher gleich geblieben ist, sind die musikalischen Vorlieben. Hier zeichnen die Umfrageergebnisse ein recht konservatives Bild: Guter, alter Psy Trance wird von 23% der Festivalbesucher erwartet, ebenso viele bevorzugen Progressive Trance und mit 19% bzw. 16% steht ebenfalls ein guter Teil der Szene vor allem auf Full On und Ambient. Die gegensätzlichen, relativ neuen Szeneauswüchse Dark Psy und Nu School Progressive / Techno werden nur von Minderheiten gerne gehört. Zahlreiche Kommentare wie „Besinnt Euch auf den Stil der Partys zum Ende der 90er Jahre!“ - „Zurück zu den Wurzeln, Spirit und Gefühl statt technischer Überdosis!“ - „Wo ist der Psy Trance geblieben?“ oder auch „Konzentriert Euch auf den Kern der Psy Trance Fans; macht es nicht so attraktiv für Außenseiter - sie verstehen unseren Spirit und unsere Art zu feiern nicht!“ lassen die Sehn

Was die Anreise angeht, so ist nur die Hälfte bereit, hierfür auf die eigentlich umweltfreundlicheren, wenn auch etwas unkomfortablen öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln zu setzen. Vermutlich sind diese Personen deckungsgleich mit jenen 50%, die angaben, für ein paar Tage auf gewisse Annehmlichkeiten des Alltags wie viele Kleider zum Wechseln, tägliches Duschen etc. verzichten zu können. Dennoch haben auffällig viele Umfrageteilnehmer in ihren Kommentaren an die Veranstalter die Wichtigkeit von ausreichend sauberen sanitären Anlagen betont, insgesamt 52% sehen hier den größten Nachbesserungsbedarf auf Festivals. Unsere Interviews mit verschiedenen Veranstaltern belegen übrigens, dass auch auf deren Seite Wasser von oben und menschliche Exkremente ein großes Thema sind…

sucht nach einer geschlossenen Trance Gemeinschaft erkennen, wie sie in vergangenen Epochen anzutreffen war. Sehnsüchte nach bestimmten Festivals gibt es natürlich sehr viele verschiedene. Interessant ist jedoch, dass sich die große Beliebtheit der Ozora aus dem letzten Jahr fortsetzt: Sie wird von den meisten Umfrageteilnehmern mit besonders freudiger Erwartung herbeigewünscht und hängt somit sogar die Boom in Portugal ab! Heiß herbei gesehnt werden außerdem die Antaris und das Fusion Festival. Zu guter letzt wäre deine Goa Bravo natürlich nicht komplett ohne die Top 3 der angesagten Accessoires für die kommende Freiluftsaison, die wir in mühevollster Recherche ermitteln konnten. Platz 3 belegt ein unspektakulärer Dauerbrenner, nämlich die Sonnenbrille. Viel trendiger ist da schon Platz 2: Das Gehirn zum Wechseln! Aber am angesagtesten auf den Floors dieser Welt ist im kommenden Sommer… Der seifenblasenspuckende Rasenmäher!

Thanks a lot to all those who followed our call and took part in our summer survey to tell us their preferences and expectations for this year’s open air season! For sure there are as many views and opinions as there are Trance lovers in this world. Unfortunately, we can draw this really multicoloured spectrum of opinions only in a simplified way; for it would not only blast the length of this article but also become confusing to put all the hundreds of different opinions just side by side. But exactly this is the quality of a survey or a statistic: To show trends by subsuming single opinions into tendencies. And thanks to social media like Facebook, we are still able to hear individual voices in the end! With this in mind: Here we go with the results of our summer survey! When it comes to summer provisions, the scene plans carefully: Half of the participants answered to plan way ahead before going to a specific festival. The rest consists in equal parts of spontaneous and part-time spontaneous ones. The availability of holidays is a secondary player in this respect, because only 6% named this reason as the most important one when deciding for a festival. The lineup is much more interesting: Every third person decides for or against an open air depending on the musical program. Quite comprehensible, because it is dancing what these manoeuvres are about in the end. A spectacular venue is also attractive, 18% named this as the most important reason why they decide in favor of a festival. And the same number is interested in meeting friends above all and looks especially for festivals where many of them is going to. Kerstin wrote us via Face-

Are you influenced by the police control when deciding to drive to a festival ? Yes 42,5% No 57,5%

book: “It’s not all about money and size of a festival… it’s about vibe and energy!” For sure she says exactly what many Trancers are thinking. But still it is just one side of the medal; because this vibe and that particular energy include quite a lot of consideration and also money in the end. I advise you to take a look at the Festival Inside Report in the available issue. Concerning the journey to a festival, only half of the participants are willing to use actually more ecologic though a little less comfortable public transport. These ones might be congruent with those 50% who said that they are willing to go without certain everyday comforts like lots of clothes to change or daily showers for a few days. Nevertheless, a conspicuous number of people emphasized the importance of sufficient, clean sanitary facilities in their comments for the festival promoters, 52% see an urgent need for improvement at events in this respect. By the way: Our interviews with several promoters confirm that water from above and human excrements are really serious issues for them, too… No serious issue any more is the originally vegetarian spirit of Trance festivals: Only 23% object to meat being sold at open airs, 37% don’t care about this issue and the majority of 40% explicitly approves the availability of meat delicacies. Similarly to the expectations concerning hygiene, this reveals kind of a paradigm shift within the scene, at least for those who have been celebrating Psy Trance for a while now.

What remained pretty much the same in comparison are the musical preferences. The results of the survey draw a pretty conserva-

tive picture in this respect: Good, old Psy Trance is expected by 23% of the festival visitors, the same number prefers Progressive Trance and also Full On and Ambient is appreciated by quite a part of the scene with 19% resp. 16% naming these styles to be their most wanted ones. Other, rather new styles as Dark Psy and Nu School / Techno are appreciated only by a minority. Numerous comments like “Take a look at the style of the parties of the late 90s!” – “Back to the roots, spirit and feeling instead of technical overdose!” – “Where has the Psy Trance gone?” or »Focus on the core group of Psy Trance fans; don‘t make it too attractive for outsidersThey simply don‘t catch our spirit and way of celebrating!” reveal a desire for a closed Trance community like it used to be in past eras. Concerning desires for special festivals, again there are very much different ones. But it is interesting to see that the popularity of Ozora that could be witnessed already last year, obviously continues: This festival is most longed for in eager anticipation, even more than Boom in Portugal! But also Antaris and Fusion are highly anticipated. Last but not least, your Goa Popstar magazine would not be complete without a Top 3 of the hottest accessories for the coming open air season, which we have been investigating very carefully. Coming in third, is quite a boring long runner, the sunglasses. Much trendier is place number 2: A change of brain! But the fanciest accessory for world wide dance floors during the upcoming summer is… The soap-bubbles-blowing-lawnmower! Roberdo

Dieser muss jedoch in Einklang mit den Anforderungen der Behörden stehen; den wenigsten ist bewusst, wie viele Auflagen es gibt, z.B. hinsichtlich bestimmter Gesundheits- und Sicherheitsstandards, und wie peinlich genau solche Auflagen definiert sind und kontrolliert werden. Aber auch Du hattest sicher schon Deine Erfahrungen mit Ämtern und kannst so vielleicht erahnen, wie viel Arbeit hier lauert.

„Festivals zu veranstalten ist knallharte Arbeit, braucht jahrelange Erfahrung und Routine und viele Kontakte, sonst wird alles sehr, sehr teuer. Ein Fest, das einen sechsstelligen Betrag kostet, ist ein Mega-Risiko: Stürme, Regen oder unvorhergesehene Ereignisse, z.B. plötzliche Änderungen von Gesetzen oder ihre Handhabung, können das Festival vereiteln.“ (Tomrom, Spirit Base) „Promoting festivals is rock-hard work, it takes long-year experience and routine as well as many contacts- otherwise it will become a very, very expensive issue. A party that costs a sixfigure amount of money is mega risky: Storms, rain or other unpredictable events like sudden amendments to a law or its application can thwart the entire festival.” (Tomrom, Spirit Base)

Der druckvolle Sound massiert wohlig die Bauchdecke, auf den gewaltigen Schwarzlichtmalereien am Rande der Tanzflächen öffnen sich die Portale zu fremden Welten und über dem Kopf wogt die Lasershow in einem Meer aus Licht und Farben… So soll es sein, wenn eines unserer geliebten Festivals in vollem Gang ist! Was man in einem solchen Moment jedoch nicht bemerkt, ist der gewaltige Berg Arbeit und Geld, der in diesem Spektakel steckt. Daher möchten wir Euch in dieser Ausgabe nicht nur die vielen verschiedenen Freiluftvergnügungen der Sommersaison vorstellen, sondern auch einen Einblick hinter ihre Kulissen und somit in die Welt der Festivalorganisation geben. Nach dem Festival ist vor dem Festival! Und so gehen die Vorbereitungen meist schon los, kaum dass der letzte Beat verklungen ist: Was

Wenigstens kann man diese Aufgaben vom geheizten Büro aus erledigen, denn draußen ist es mittlerweile Winter geworden. Und spätestens nun gilt es noch etwas anderes anzugehen, was ebenfalls ziemlich arbeitsaufwändig ist: Die Planung des Lineups. Sie zieht sich oft über viele Monate, denn für ein mehrtägiges Festival werden natürlich eine ganze Reihe Künstler gebucht. In diesem Zusammenhang gibt es etliche Absprachen zu treffen, Verträge zu schließen und Flüge zu buchen. Auch Hotelzimmer wollen bestellt und der Shuttle-Service koordiniert sein. Das Booking ist aber nicht nur ausgesprochen zeitaufwändig, es hat auch einen entscheidenden Vorteil für den Veranstalter, wenn es erst einmal erledigt ist: Wie ihr unserer Sommerumfrage entnehmen könnt, ist das Lineup nämlich ein sehr wichtiger Faktor, der das Festival für die Besucher interessant macht. Damit wären wir beim näch-

sten Schritt: Der Werbung. In Zeiten des Web 2.0 läuft diese meist ohnehin kontinuierlich, aber spätestens wenn sich der Frühling bemerkbar macht, sollte es richtig losgehen: Die Flyer kommen aus der Druckerei und müssen unter‘s Volk gebracht und gleichzeitig unzählige Posts im Internet verbreitet werden, auch steht nun umfangreiche Pressearbeit an. Voraussetzung ist natürlich, dass die Festivalseite bereits online ist und alle Fotos, Logos etc. stehen. Von jetzt ab geht es Schlag auf Schlag. Bei vielen Veranstaltern werden die Teams umso größer, je länger die Tage werden. Das Dekound Lichtkonzept muss aufgestellt und die damit beauftragten Künstler koordiniert werden. Die Aufbauarbeiten auf dem Gelände starten auf der Boom einige Monate, auf der Antaris etwa 10 Tage vor dem Festivalstart. Unabhängig davon wird es aber wirklich überall in den letzten Tagen so richtig schön hektisch und stressig… Was dann kommt, kennt ihr ja alle - siehe Einleitung. Aber ganz vorbei ist es auch dann noch nicht, wenn Du bereits wieder in Deinem heimischen Bettchen schlummerst. Irgendjemand muss ja auch noch aufräumen… Und für diese unliebsame Aufgabe ist leider oftmals plötzlich keiner mehr da. Daher ist es schlau, sich Helfer zu suchen, die gar nicht mitfeiern, sondern nur zum Saubermachen anrücken. Ähnlich kompliziert wie die Organisation eines Festivals war es für mich, die vielen Informationen in diese wenigen Zeilen zu quetschen. Daher veröffentlichen wir auf mushroom-online.com die ausführlichen, spannenden Einzelinterviews mit den Veranstaltern, denen wir an dieser Stelle herzlich danken!

Your abdominal wall is given a delightful massage by the powerful sound system, portals to alien worlds open on the huge backdrops around the dance floor and above your head, the laser show waves within a sea of lights and colours… That’s just the way it should be when one of our beloved festivals is in full swing. But what you won’t realize in such a moment is all the loads of work and money that have been invested to make this dream come true. For this reason, we not only want to present you all the various outdoor pleasures in this issue, but also to provide you with some insights behind the scenes of our favourite summer activity: Welcome to the world of festival organization! After the festival is before the festival! And that is why the preparations start just when the last beats have faded away: What worked out well? What should be improved? On this basis, the plans for the next year are evolved. But they have to be in keeping with the laws; only few festival visitors are aware of all the existing requirements, for example concerning security and health standards, and how rigorously they are formulated and controlled. But for sure you got your experience with authorities, too so perhaps you also have an idea how much work lies in wait here.

Schlimm auch die vielen achtlos weggeworfenen Zigarettenkippen und Kronkorken, abertausende! Das kostet viel Zeit. Zudem müssen alle Löcher sorgfältig wieder zugebuddelt werden, das sind oft hunderte, die die Gäste als Privattoilette oder Mülleimer verwenden. Leider wirkt sich das dann auch auf die Eintrittspreise aus.“ “Unfortunately some guests mistake the festival venue for a dump and we have to dispose fridges and sofas for instance. Also all those cigarette butts and bottle caps being thrown away carelessly are really horrible, and there are thousands of them. All of this takes a lot of time. Additionally, we have to close all the holes, often hundreds of them, which were used as rubbish bins or private toilets by visitors. „Ich würde sagen, am arbeitsintensivsten ist die Werbung für das Festival, denn es handelt sich um einen fortlaufenden Prozess, der das ganze Jahr über anhält. Wir schließen ständig neue Verbindungen, rekrutieren neue Leute für die Promotion und lernen neue Freunde kennen, die für das nächste Life Festival mit uns zusammen arbeiten. Eine Menge Arbeit macht es auch, jenen gewissen Vibe aufrecht zu erhalten.“ “I would say that most of the work is in the promotion of the festival as this is an ongoing promotion through the year that never stops. Aber diese Leute machen es sich zu einfach: Sie rechnen die Anzahl der Besucher mal den Eintrittspreis und denken dann, die Veranstalter würden Millionen machen. So erreicht unser Festival seinen Break-Even niemals nur durch die Eintrittsgelder. “ „Some people claim that festival promoters earn loads of money; but only because they don‘t know how much we spend and how much is required. They just do it the easiest way: They multiply the number of people with the prices of tickets. And they think promoters get millions. Fact is, we spend millions and we never get thousands: To produce Boom we need a minimum of 3.5 - 4 million Euros! At least all this tasks can be dealt with in the heated office because outside it has become winter in the meantime. At the latest now, there also is another issue to start with: The planning of the lineup. This often takes several months because many artists are invited for a festival that runs several days. And so many agreements have to be made, contracts have to be worked out and flights as well as hotel rooms have to be booked. Also, the shuttle service has to be coordinated. But the booking process is not only very time-consuming but it also represents a decisive advantage for the promoter: For, as you can also read in the results of our summer survey, the lineup is an important factor when it comes to the decision whether to go to a festival or not. And this takes us right to the next step: The promotion. Though in times of Web 2.0 it is kind of a continuous process, serious promotion should start at the latest when spring is approaching: Now the flyers are delivered from the printers and have to be widely distributed. Also count-

less internet posts have to be placed and extensive media communication begins. Of course, this requires that the website of the festival is already online and all the photos, logos etc. are set up. Things come thick and fast now. With the days getting longer and longer, also the teams around the promoters grow bigger and bigger from day to day. The decoration and light concept has to become definite and the artists charged with this issue have to be coordinated. For example, the construction works at the site of the Boom start a few months before the festival actually begins and about 10 days before Antaris takes off. Independently of that concern, it gets really, really hectic and stressful at every open air during the last days before the event. You all know, what’s next: See introduction. But actually it still ain’t over when you are already having a nap in your cosy bed at home again. Because still somebody has to do the cleanup works… Unfortunately, often there is suddenly nobody left for this rather unpleasant job so it is quite a smart idea to get some helpers who don’t attend the actual party but only show up for the cleaning. It was as complicated as organizing a festival for me to put all the information into these few lines. Mit dem DJM-2000 zettelt Pioneer eine kreative Revolution im DJ Sektor an: Das Teil vereint klassisches Mischpult, Effektgerät, MIDI Controller und Soundkarte. Seitdem vor gerade mal drei, vier Jahren vereinzelte Beiträge auf Compilations erste Aufmerksamkeit für Avalon weckten, hat das Projekt einen geradezu kometenhaften Aufstieg durchlaufen. Heute zählt das kreative Werk des aus Großbritannien stammenden Leon Kane bereits zu den verlässlichen Anhaltspunkten für hochgradig energetischen, ausgelassenen und vor allem intelligent gemachten Full On, wie sich am durchweg guten Feedback aus allen Ecken der Welt zeigt. Ein genauerer Blick auf Leons musikalische Karriere offenbart, dass Avalon nicht für seine ersten Versuche als elektronischer Produzent steht: Bevor er das Soloprojekt gründete, war er bereits zusammen mit Alex EVP von Wildthings Records unter dem Pseudonym Reality Grid aktiv. Sein hieraus resultierendes musikalisches Weltenbummlertum hat also durchaus schon längere Tradition und führte ihn an so manch exotischen Ort. Today the creative product of UK hailing Leon Kane appears to be a reliable clue for highly energetic, highly frisky and -above all- highly intelligent Full On music, as the thoroughly great feedback from all around the world is proving. A closer look at Leon’s musical career reveals Avalon not to be his first attempt as a producer. He was already very involved with the act Reality Grid together with Alex EVP from Wildthings Records before he started the solo project. So his ongoing musical globetrotting has become kind of a long-year habit and took him to both exo-

tic and adventurous sites. In this respect, his invitations to the spectacular festivals Honu Eclipse on the Easter Islands and Mafia Island at the coast of East Africa will surely be highlights of the current year. Luminokaya

Psychedelic Art from Russia Eigentlich stammt der auch als Luminokaya bekannte Keerych aus dem russischen St. Petersburg. Aber seine eigentliche Heimat ist der Himalaja, den er am liebsten mit dem Motorrad erkundet. Hier bekam er auch sein bisher größtes Kompliment: Sein buddhistischer Guru führte den Laptop, auf dem er ihm ein Foto seines Fluoro- Airbrushs vom Buddha Vadjrasattva zeigte, an die Stirn- woraufhin das Gerät mehrere Jahre ohne Probleme lief! Aber die Inspiration für das Titelbild bekam er noch wo anders, nämlich in der verlassenen Felsenstadt Petra in Jordanien. Der Hintergrund erinnert an die Höhlen und Klippen dieses Ortes. „Es ist ein unglaublich magischer Platz. Nach 3 Tagen bekam ich Visionen, die ich teilweise in dieser Arbeit reflektierte. Nach ein paar Jahren, während des Tibetanischen Neujahrsfestes in Katmandu, hatte ich gewaltige Flashbacks von Petra. Das ganze ist schwer zu beschreiben, aber dieses Werk ist eine Mischung verschiedener Einflüsse von verschiedenen Orten, Kulturen und Religionen...“ berichtet der Künstler. Dabei blickt er bereits auf ziemlich umfangreiche Erfahrung zurück: Vor 18 Jahren fing alles mit Laser- Installationen an, vor 13 entdeckte er dann die faszinierenden Möglichkeiten von Fluorofarben für sich und seit 9 Jahren ist er zudem der computergestützten Arbeit verfallen. Zuletzt noch ein Hinweis zur Artist- Sticker Card, sie verfügt nämlich über einen ganz speziellen optischen Trick: 1) Schielen, bis vier Gesichter erscheinen 2) Behutsam den Fokus verändern, bis der Stereo Effekt eintritt… und 3) Viel Spaß!

Actually Keerych aka Luminokaya comes from Russian St. Petersburg. But his real home is the Himalaya which he loves to explore by motorbike. It was also here were he was given his biggest compliment: His Buddhist Guru put his laptop to his forehead when he showed him a photo of his flouro airbrush painting of Buddha Vadjrasattva on it- after that, the computer worked without any problems for some years! But the cover picture was inspired by even another place, namely the abandoned city of Petra in Jordan, famous for its rock-cut architecture. The background gives an idea of the cliffs and caves at this place. “This is an incredibly magic place. After 3 days I got visions, which are partly reflected in this work. After a few years, I had powerful flashbacks from Petra on Tibetans New Year in Kathmandu. Difficult to explain that, but this artwork is a mix of different impressions from different places, cultures and religions...”

Auf dieser wohl größten Versammlung von Psy Trance Liebhabern treffen Stämme aus allen Teilen der Welt aufeinander. Pünktlich zum Augustvollmond öffnet sich seit 1997 im Zweijahrestakt ein Portal zu einer anderen Welt. Alle zwei Jahre treffen sich auf der Boom die Stämme, um gemeinsam das Leben, die Kunst und die Natur zu feiern. ‚We Are One‘ und ‚We Are All‘ lauteten die Mottos, welche die Psy Trancer an die wahre Bedeutung von kollektiver Trance und psychedelischer Achtsamkeit heranführten: Der Kontakt mit etwas Magischem, etwas Universellem, das die Einheit zwischen den Menschen und dem Kosmos repräsentiert. Aus einem Treffen von 3500 Leuten aus ein paar Ländern im Jahre 1997 ist die Boom auf 25.000 Besucher aus 85 Ländern im Jahre 2008 gewachsen. Das Festival ist größer geworden und hat neue Dimensionen erreicht, jedoch herrscht allgemeines Einverständnis darüber, dass es nach seinen eigenen Werten gewachsen ist. Es berührte nie kommerzielle Gefilde: Die Boom war immer viel, viel mehr als ein Dancefloor mit möglichst großen Namen auf dem Lineup. Einer ganz eigenen Vision von zeitgenössischer psychedelischer Kultur folgend, verbindet sie Musik, Malerei, Illustration, Theater, Kino, Vorträge und Workshops. Auch war sie stets wegweisend in Punkto nachhaltigem, umweltorientiertem Festival. Und schließlich ist die Boom unabhängig, sie ist eine No-Logo Zone ohne Werbung und Marken. Sie hat die Regungen des Zeitgeistes aufgegriffen, ohne ihre psychedelischen Wurzeln zu vergessen. So war auf Chaishop.com oder im mexikanischen Trance-It Magazin in einem Artikel von Sam Jankowski zu lesen: „Die Boom ist psychedelischer als die moderne Psy Trance Szene“. Was die Boom neben dem visionären Aspekt ihres Programms zu etwas Besonderem macht, ist ihre menschliche Seite: Sie ist das größte Stammestreffen in Form eines psychedelischen Happenings.

Menschen verschiedener Herkunft tauschen sich auf der Boom aus, und das wesentlich intensiver als auf irgendeinem anderen Festival. Während der Boom wird ein enger Kontakt zwischen Menschen verschiedener Nationalitäten hergestellt und so ein sehr persönliches und tiefgründiges Kennenlernen „des Anderen“ ermöglicht. Nur mit Hilfe dieser Begegnungen ist es den Menschen möglich, über ihre Klischees hinweg zu kommen. Erst dann können sich ihre typisch menschlichen Verhaltensweisen voll entfalten: Kooperieren, Teilen, emotionale Beziehungen aufbauen, Lernen vom „Anderen“ und auf dieser Grundlage schließlich eine Veränderung des eigenen Verhaltens, der eigenen Einstellung erfahren und eine neue Definition von „Ich“ und „die anderen“ erlangen. So entsteht eine neue Form der Achtsamkeit, die wahre Bedeutung von psychedelisch. Wir können ein Festival auf mannigfache Weise definieren und unserer Fantasie freien Lauf lassen, um das zu benennen, was wir da erleben. Aber wenn wir uns einfach auf „das andere“ einlassen, verstehen wir, dass ein Festival wie die Boom weit über das reine Vergnügen hinausgeht. Sie vermag die Neuerfindung zwischenmenschlicher Beziehungen, und wenn dem wirklich so ist, tun wir etwas sehr Edles: Wir gestalten eine neue Zivilisation.

From 1997 to 2010 Boom keeps tracking the uncharted territories of psychedelia and collective shamanism. Tribes from the entire world meet and celebrate the biggest union of psy-trance lovers. Every two years, since 1997, the August Full Moon witnesses an activation of a portal. Every two years, Boom Festival gathers the tribes to celebrate life, art and nature. ‚We Are One‘ and ‚We Are All‘ were mottos that connected psy-trancers with the true meaning of collective trance and psychedelic awareness: the contact with something magic, universal and representative of the union between mankind and the cosmos. As could be read in chaishop.com or in the magazine Trance-It, from Mexico, back in 2008 “Boom is more psychedelic than the modern psytrance scene”, in an article written by Sam Jankowski. What makes Boom special, besides all the visionary aspects of its program, is the human side: Boom is the biggest gathering of tribes in a psychedelic event. People from different cultures interconnect at Boom, much more than in any other festival. During Boom close contact is made between different people of various nationalities allowing for a more profound and personal knowledge of the “other”. It is through these interpersonal relationships that individuals can begin to rid themselves of stereotypes. And then the most genuine of human behaviours begin to appear naturally: cooperation, sharing, crea-

ting affective bonds, learning from the “other” and, lastly, change, change of behaviour, change of attitude, a new notion of “I” and “other”. This forms a base for a new kind of awareness. The true meaning of psychedelia. We can define a festival in a number of ways and use our imagination to name what we experience. Multasm Multicoloured Carnival of Cultures Su 23.05 • Berlin / Germany Dass es der deutschen Hauptstadt nicht gerade an kulturellem Potential mangelt, ist kein Geheimnis. Den vielleicht farbenprächtigsten Ausdruck findet diese Tatsache alljährlich im Karneval der Kulturen. Und natürlich darf bei diesem kunterbunten Treiben auch die Trance Szene nicht fehlen!

Rund 100 aufwändig dekorierte Wagen aus unterschiedlichsten Kulturen ziehen bereits am Nachmittag durch die Straßen Kreuzbergs - begleitet von einer Menge tobender Freaks. Diese ausgelassene Stimmung wird dann Abends auf der Multasm aufgegriffen: Ganz entspannt geht es von vielen verschiedenen Stationen mit dem Shuttlebus zu einer weitläufigen Location im Süden der Stadt, wo auf gleich vier verschiedenen Floors auf drei Ebenen ein vielfarbiges Musikprogramm zwischen Psychedelic, Dark, Full On, Progressive, Ambient und Downbeat entrollt wird. Der spektakuläre, nächtliche Höhepunkt des Karnevals der Kulturen ist übrigens ökologisch korrekt: Der Veranstalter EssentiaXperience ist in einem Projekt aktiv, dass um die Kompensierung des CO2 Ausstoßes durch Aufforstung bemüht ist. expression is represented by the Carnival of Cultures year by year. And of course the Trance scene should not be missing during this cheerful hustle and bustle! Already during the afternoon around 100 lavishly decorated trucks cruise the streets of the popular district Kreuzberg, accompanied by a romping crowd of freaks. This frisky atmosphere is taken up at the Multasm party in the evening: A shuttle bus connects the vast venue in the South of the city with numerous stops. Arriving here, the guests are welcomed by four different dance floors at three different levels. The musical program enrolled here consists of an entertaining mixture of Psychedelic, Dark, Full On, Progressive, Ambient and Downbeat. Einerseits bietet die Psychedelic Experience mit ihrer aufwendigen Gestaltung und einem spektakulären Musikprogramm ein buchstäblich großes Erlebnis für ein internationales Publikum. Anderseits bewahrt sie jedoch auch den freakig-familiären Flair, der auf vielen Großveranstaltungen leider mehr und mehr verloren geht.

Spannende Neuigkeiten gibt es rund um jene magische Pyramide, welche diesem Festival seinen Namen verleiht: So wird sie in dieser Saison nicht in Ungarn, sondern in direkter Nähe des GoaHighway 24 zu sichten sein. Fortan ist nämlich ein jährlicher Wechsel zwischen Ungarn und Deutschland geplant, damit es auch ja nicht langweilig wird. Wobei dafür eigentlich ohnehin keine Gefahr besteht: Das Musikprogramm auf zwei Dancefloors und im liebevoll gestalteten Chill Out verspricht ursprünglich-psychedelisches Vergnügen vom Feinsten, selbiges gilt auch für die angeheuerten vier Dekoteams. Eine weitere Neuigkeit wird die Stimmung wohl noch zusätzlich ankurbeln: Zum „Herrentag“ am 13.05. werden nämlich um Punkt 12 Uhr Mittags für alle Festivalgäste 20 Fässer Freibier angestochen; natürlich auch für die Damen! Ein gestaffelter Eintrittspreis, der sich Samstagabend ab 18 Uhr auf 35 und Sonntag ab 10 Uhr auf 12 Euro reduziert, zeigt, dass man den Besuchern der Pyramiduna ein ungetrübtes Vergnügen bieten möchte und macht das Open Air auch für Tagesgäste und Kurzentschlossene interessant. Exciting news about that magical pyramid, which names this festival: For instance, it won’t be held in Hungary this year but very close to the well known, North-East German Goa-Highway A24. From now on, an annual rotation between the venue in Hungary and the new one in Germany is planned, to keep things fresh and entertaining. But actually Pyramiduna is quite an entertaining issue anyway: The musical program on two dancefloors and in the lovingly arranged Chill Out promises quite some original psychedelic delights. And so do the four contracted decoration teams. Another innovation will stimulate the atmosphere even more: 13th May is Father’s Day in Germany namely, also known as “Gent’s day”. Matching this occasion, 20 barrels of free beer will be taped at the stroke of 12 o’clock in the midday, of course also for all female visitors! Dass dieses Konzept ganz wunderbar aufgegangen ist, zeigte sich im letzten Jahr nicht nur in Form des allgegenwärtigen breiten Grinsens auf den Gesichtern der Besucher. Neben der angenehm untergründigen Atmosphäre zielt auch die musikalische Idee der Psychedelic Experience darauf ab, dem Namen der Veranstaltung gerecht zu werden: Der Schwerpunkt liegt eindeutig auf kraftvollem, treibenden Psychedelic Sound, jedoch werden im Laufe des Wochenendes all die verschiedenen Stilrichtungen der heutigen Szene zu hören sein. Dafür wurde ein bunt gemischtes Line Up aus Deutschland, Italien und der Schweiz zusammengestellt, das während der Veranstaltung einen trancigen Spannungsbogen entfalten wird. Für eine sommerliche Erfrischung eignet sich dann

Juni wird sich die Sandgrube von Rauchenwarth bei Wien wieder in ein Sternen-Kaleidoskop verwandeln. Der Dancefloor wird heuer von Calaquendi zu einem Alien-Tempel mit 12 Säulen ausgebaut und die Backdrops stehen ganz im Zeichen von Avatar. Und so ist auch das Open Air, welches genau so heißt: Das Life Festival ist bunt, abenteuerlich und voller neuer Erfahrungen und Eindrücke. Neben einem sehr speziellen Trance Bereich, der schon für sich all diese Attribute verdient, gibt es auch noch jede Menge andere Musik und Unterhaltung zu erkunden. Fangen wir mit der räumlichen Grundlage für dieses Freiluftvergnügen an, der Location. Das Life findet im Herzen Irlands, auf einem malerischen, 160 Morgen großen Anwesen direkt an den Ufern des Lough Ennell, statt. Die sanften Hügel und einige hübsche gregorianische Bauten liefern die perfekt Kulisse für entspanntes, ruhiges Camping und überhaupt nicht ruhiges Feiern. Das Motto des Trance Floors könnte „Zurück zu den Wurzeln“ lauten: Infected Mushroom wurde um ein spezielles Oldschool Set gebeten und auch Astral Projection, Eat Static, Space Tribe oder der Highlight Tribe stehen für ursprüngliches, psychedelisches Vergnügen. Daneben gibt es noch haufenweise andere Musik zu entdecken: Von akustischen Konzerten bis hin zu Elektro ist das Soundspektrum dieser Veranstaltung so breit, wie es nur selten auf einem Festival zu finden ist. Trotz dieser kulturellen Spannweite hat das Life Festival einen erfrischend unkommerziellen Charakter behalten; es werden also kei-

Searching for something, exploring an exciting environment to finally discover exactly what you have been looking for; and then again looking for something special but finding something unexpected, even more fascinating… Well, that’s life! And so is the festival bearing this very name: Multicoloured, adventurous and full of new experiences. Beside a pretty special Trance area that truly deserves all these attributes in itself, there still is much more music and entertainment to go for. Let’s start with the spatial basis for this open air pleasure, the venue. Life takes place in Belvedere, a magnificent 160 acre lakeside estate on the shores of Lough Ennell in the heart of beautiful Ireland. hardly calm partying. Eristoff Tracks Urban Art Forms Th, 03.06. - Su, 06.06 • Wiesen / Austria Als „Aushängeschild elektronischer Kunst im Festivalbereich“ versteht sich dieses Festival und offenbar nimmt man diesen Anspruch ausgesprochen ernst: Inmitten der idyllischen Natur Österreichs setzt das Urban Art Forms Festival im bereits sechsten Jahr auf wahre Superlative aus den Bereichen Musik, Dekoration und Visuals. Das deliziöse Line Up des Psy Trance Bereichs wird angeführt von zwei musikalischen Urgesteinen der Szene, Hallucinogen und Shpongle. Auch nach über 15 Jahren intensiver Bühnenerfahrung haben diese beiden Herrschaften nichts von ihrem psychedelischen Glanz verloren. Daneben findet sich eine lange Reihe kaum weniger namenhafter Acts aus den Bereichen Full On und Progressive auf dem Lineup; es sollte also für jeden Geschmack ein echtes Highlight dabei sein! In optischer Hinsicht kommt das „Dreamteam“ zum Einsatz, ein Zusammenschluss von Gansedoline, NOS,

Mae & Moa und Maxi, die mit einem Gesamtkonzept aus Stretch Designs, Objekten und großformatigen Backdrops den Trance Bereich des Festivals mehr als stilecht dekorieren werden. Da die Visual-Kultur einen Schwerpunkt des Festivals darstellt, verwundert es nicht, dass sie ebenfalls sorgfältig ins Gesamtbild integriert wird: Der Sound jedes einzelnen Acts wird von einem eigenen Visual Künstler optisch umgesetzt, so zum Beispiel von Großmeister El Geko oder VJ Benski aus Neuseeland. Festival offers true superlatives concerning music, decoration and visuals already in the sixth year. The delicious line up of the Psy Trance area is led by two musical veterans of the scene, Hallucinogen and Shpongle. Even after 15 years of intense stage experience, these two gents did not lose any of their unique, psychedelic elegance. The musical program continues with a considerable number of none less famous acts from the areas of Full On and Progressive. So there should be a definite highlight for every taste! In an optical respect, the “Dreamteam” will be employed, a conglomeration of the artists Gansedoline, NOS, Mae & Moa and Maxi that will construct a stunning overall decoration concept from stretch designs, objects and large backdrops for the Trance area. And because the visual culture is another main emphasis beside music at the festival, it comes as no surprise that this aspect of urban arts is integrated carefully too: The sound of every single act will be optically processed by an own visual artist, for example by grandmaster El Geko or VJ Benski from New Zealand. Th, 01.07. - Su 04.07. • Lower Austria near Vienna Seinen Namen zum Programm macht dieses familiäre Open Air unweit von Wien. Nach dem großen Erfolg und durchweg guten Feedback im letzten Jahr werden die paradiesischen Zustände im Steinbruch von Falkenstein dieses Mal auf ganze vier Tage ausgeweitet. Neben einer idyllischen Naturkulisse mit spektakulären Aussichtspunkten um den eigentlichen Partybereich steht zum Camping das sehr spezielle Ambiente einer Burgruine zur Verfügung. Wo wir gerade beim Ambiente sind: Auf der Homepage des Festivals hat man einen sehr gut gemachten virtuellen Rundgang eingerichtet, der die Stimmung super rüber bringt und wirklich richtig Laune auf das Paradies macht. Dazu ein paar akustische Assoziationen gefällig? Nun, mit Juno Reactor, Cosmosis und dem Alien Project sind drei wahre Altmeister des Psychelic Trance vertreten und der sonnige, progressive Schub von Vibrasphere dürfte wohl auch den meisten ein Begriff sein. Mit einer Kuppelprojektion, die u.a. von den VJs Benski und El Geko beschickt wird und vielen optischen Spielereien wird das diesjährige Dekothema „Dreamland“ sehr gewissenhaft umgesetzt.

After the big success of last year’s edition and without exception good feedback, the paradise like conditions will be extended to full four days this year. Beside the picturesque scenery with some spectacular viewpoints around the actual party area, camping will be situated in the ambience of a castle ruin. Nicht nur der Name dieses eigentlich ausgesprochen friedlichen kleinen Festivals verdient das Prädikat „außergewöhnlich“: Mit seinem erfrischend untergründigen Ansatz, vielen mystisch-rituellen Einflüssen, einem wirklich breiten Musikprogramm und vielen sehr speziellen Details fällt dieses Freiluftspektakel definitiv aus der Reihe! Bereits zum fünften Mal organisiert der Bajuwarische Barbaren e.V. sein Treffen für Freaks und Individualisten aller Art. Th 29.07 - Su 01.08 • Mulegns / Rona / Swiss Unter dem Motto „Dance is the hidden language of the soul” lädt die Crew des Summer Never Ends Festivals vom 29. Juli bis 01. August 2010 bereits zum fünften Mal in die Schweizer Alpen. Um dem diesjährigen Motto gerecht zu werden, hat man erneut eine beachtliche Anzahl internationaler Spitzenkünstler verpflichtet, die zweifelsohne das Potential besitzen, die wunderschöne, auf einer Hochebene inmitten der majestätischen Kulisse der Berge gelegene Location so richtig zum Beben zu bringen. Auf drei Floors wird es Psy Trance, Progressive, Chill Out, Techno und Minimal zu hören geben. Der große Freiluftbereich wird wieder mit demselben, hochpotenten Line Array Soundsystem bespielt wie bereits im letzten Jahr. Eine erstklassige Anlage wird auch im Tent Floor (diesmal im größeren Zelt) garantiert. Zusätzlich zu diesen Bereichen wird es einen neuen Chill Out Bereich geben. Vier verschiedene Dekoteams zeichnen für die Konstruktion einer kunterbunten Parallelwelt verantwortlich. Und natürlich darf auch eine atemberaubende Lasershow nicht fehlen! Die Crew ist bemüht, den Besucherinnen und Besuchern ein Maximum an Genuss zu bieten. Dabei wird Wert auf die Zusammenarbeit mit Leuten gelegt, die auf dem Boden geblieben sind, das Festival leidenschaftlich unterstützen und dabei den nötigen Respekt vor der Natur behalten. Sahaura Ajna

Als Austragungsort hat sich Veranstalter Michi das polnische Wolin direkt hinter der deutschen Grenze ausgesucht. Dafür gab es eine Reihe guter Gründe: Es handelt sich nämlich um einen Themenpark, der neben seinem eigenen Ostseestrand auch eine Westernstadt und eine kleine Ritterburg aufzuweisen hat. Diese Orte werden in das Festival integriert, so dass das Ganze sich in eine Art „Erlebnispark für Trance Freaks“ verwandeln wird… Nebenbei

Es war zu Beginn der Neunziger, als im westindischen Bundesstaat Goa plötzlich eine neue Form von Party entstand. Die dort traditionell ansässigen Aussteiger griffen nämlich das hypnotische Potential der neuartigen elektronischen Tanzmusik auf und verliehen ihr eine hippiesk-psychedelische Note. Doch nicht nur der Sound dieser Tanzvergnügungen war speziell: Goa Partys wurden klassischerweise direkt am sonnigen Strand veranstaltet. Und so trägt die Sahaura Ajna nicht nur einen sehr indischen Namen, sondern findet auch genau dort statt, wo eine Trance Party steigen sollte: Direkt am Meer.

sind die Behörden in Polen viel unkomplizierter, daher haben sowohl der Veranstalter als auch die Besucher viel weniger Stress mit diesen. Ach ja, wichtiger Punkt: Die Musik. Auf dem Lineup finden sich zahlreiche Protagonisten der norddeutschen Szene, deren Sound von rapide-rockig bis fluffig-federnd reicht. Die Anreise ist entweder im Auto oder auch bequem mit dem Zug möglich, daneben wird es wohl auch einen Shuttlebus von Berlin und Hamburg geben. It was the beginning of the nineties when a new form of party evolved in the West Indian state of Goa. The dropouts traditionally settling at this delightful place took up the hypnotic potential of the new electronic dance music and lend their characteristic hippiesque-psychedelic touch to it. But not only the music at these events was special, also their venues were: Goa parties classically took place right at the sunny beach. And that is why Sahaura Ajna not only bears an Indian name but also takes place right were a Trance party should be: At the sea.

Promoter Michi chose the Polish Wolin right behind the German border as the venue for this festival for quite some good reasons: It is actually a theme park that includes a Western city and a knight’s castle beside its own beach at the Baltic Sea. These locations will be integrated in the festival concept so that the whole thing will turn into some kind of “amusement park for Trance freaks” during the event… Beside that, the authorities are really relaxed and easy in Poland so that the promoter as well as the visitors have much less stress than in Germany for instance. Another important point: The music. There are quite some protagonists from the fruitful North German Trance scene on the lineup whose sound reaches from rapidly-rocking to fluffy-floating.
