A new star in the Shankra Festival Shankra is a relatively new name in the Swiss festival sphere. The first edition in 2015 was a bit turbulent for the promoters, but the 2016 edition was a great success. A talk with the two brothers behind Shankra about lessons learned, visions becoming reality and affordable festivals. How did you end up as party promoters in Switzerland? We were born and raised in Ticino, in the South of Switzerland, where the main language is Italian. Psytrance came along our way in our teenage years with small parties in the woods, which eventually led us to organize a bunch of small and intimate events between 2007 and 2012. Shankra 2015 was our first big festival and it was indeed one of the biggest challenges in our lifetime: The vision to have a psychedelic gathering in the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland.

Looking back to the first edition of Shankra: What were the most important lessons you learned as festival organizers? Visions always become reality, if you are passionate and determined enough. Our first edition was without doubt a beautiful learning experience, but a financial failure which made us doubt, if we would be able to continue the event. However, a couple of weeks after the festival we decided not to give up. So we made Shankra 2016 happen, mainly thanks to the candid and loving feedback of our audience. South of Switzerland 12.-16. July 2017 – Lostallo, Switzerland Shankra ist ein relativ neuer Name in der Schweizer Festivallandschaft. Das erste Event lief 2015 etwas turbulent für die Veranstalter, aber 2016 erwies sich als voller Erfolg. Ein Gespräch mit den beiden Brüdern über gelernte Lektionen, wahr gewordene Visionen und erschwingliche Festivals. Wie seid ihr zu Partyveranstaltern in der Schweiz geworden? Wir sind in Ticino im Süden der Schweiz geboren und aufgewachsen, dort spricht man Italienisch. Psytrance haben wir als Teenager auf kleinen Partys in den Wäldern entdeckt und dann schließlich zwischen 2007 und

2012 ein paar kleine, familiäre Events selbst veranstaltet. Das Shankra 2015 war unser erstes großes Festival. Es war auch eine der größten Herausforderungen unseres Lebens: Die Vision eines Festivals im italienischen Teil der Schweiz. Wenn ihr an diese erste Shankra zurückdenkt: Was waren die wichtigsten Lektionen, die ihr als Veranstalter gelernt habt?

Visionen können wahr werden, wenn du nur fest genug daran glaubst. Unser erstes Festival hat uns viel gelehrt, aber leider war es ein Verlustgeschäft. Deshalb hatten wir auch erst mal Zweifel, ob wir weitermachen können. Aber nach ein paar Wochen haben wir uns doch dazu entschieden. Und so gab es das Shankra 2016, vor allem dank des ehrlichen und liebevollen Feedbacks unserer Besucher. Was sind die spannendsten Neuigkeiten bezüglich der Shankra 2017? Dieses Jahr gibt es drei Floors, darunter ein neuer: Horizon. Der ist den so genannten “alternativen” und experimentellen Stilrichtungen gewidmet, zusammen mit Psytrance. Wir arbeiten wieder mit Natrufied zusammen, einem Architekten-Team aus Holland und werden unsere Bühnen und Bauten aus natürlichen, umweltfreundlichen Öko-Materialien konstruieren. Wir wollen einen Space für Künstler und Publikum schaffen, eine künstlerische Nachricht, die sich ans Herz der Menschen richtet: Das war und ist unsere stärkste Motivation. EDM versus Psytrance Music between money and culture

Ten years ago, talking to friends, you could still talk about "Electronic Dance Music" quite unashamedly, and generally refer to your predilection for electronically generated dancing pleasure. Today you run the risk of being frowned at. For the letter combination EDM has become the common denomination for a musical genre, which to some contemporaries resembles a bête noire. Not infrequently, there are statements such as: "This has nothing to do with Psytrance. This EDM shit is just commercial and sucks! " From a music history’s perspective EDM could be classified in the tradition of Eurotrance - a term also provoking extreme reactions. Both genres have in common that they work with short, catchy melodies and rhythmic figures superficially arranged. In addition very typical stylistic means are many and frequent breaks, which then develop to the bassline’s drop again as well as the use of vocals. It’s here we come upon the reason EDM is viewed with suspicion by some of our contemporaries: the music is considered to be unimpressive, it is easy to predict, and is aimed at mass efficiency and easy accessibility, similar to pop or other folk music. In this context, the keyword "commercial" is often applied. Events associated with EDM focus on size and show effects, DJs like Steve Aoki, Avicii or David Guetta forming hearts with their hands get transferred to the large screens including camera arms and drones in real-time, the classic popstar person cult rendered with all possibilities of modern entertainment technology. However, in having described EDM festivals, at the latest it should be apparent, there are parallels to

the Psytrance scene. Because here, too, there is not wild dancing, into the inner realms of trance anymore, but often enough with everyone facing the DJ, whose show on stage is in no way inferior to some EDM acts. Also musically, there are now certain overlaps. Vini Vici joined the EDM icon Armin Van Buuren and produced the track "Great Spirit" based on the track "Free Tibet" by Highlight Tribe. Vini Vici have also played on Tomorrowland, the impressively set up prime example of an EDM festival with 180,000 and more visitors. Neelix has also been booked there, about whom opinions differ within the Psytrance scene. His tracks are created quite simple and he has used vocals for many years. Without a doubt he was, and still is, very successful - especially in our scene. Goa veterans Raja Ram and Chicago have also been playing remakes of great rock and pop classics for a long time, and are some of the biggest audience favourites with their fit for bawling version of Psytrance. It’s not really a marginal phenomenon. We asked the artists just mentioned to comment on the subject of EDM and the rejection attitude, which not only the

Psytrance community, but also large parts of the techno and house scene sport. The response was significant - namely very, very reserved. We interpret this as proof that we have put our fingers to something - for whoever is self-confident and sovereign behind what he does, can also defend it against the prevailing criticism.

I think it is still psychedelic enough to wear that label, but trance? No, really not. I'd call it Psychedelic Dance in the end. If you love trance, like I do, you're better off checking some contemporary Deep House / Acid Techno acts or events. My friend Mokt Blied, a young German House/Techno DJ, played some sets that were (without him knowing) surprisingly close to what we called "Morning Sound" some decades ago, and that was at Techno parties."

EDM versus Psytrance Musik zwischen Geld und Kultur

Vor 10 Jahren konnte man im Gespräch mit Freunden noch ganz ungeniert von „Electronic Dance Music“ sprechen und sich damit ganz allgemein auf seine Vorliebe für elektronisch generierte Tanzvergnügen beziehen. Heute läuft man Gefahr, schräg angeguckt zu werden. Denn die Buchstabenkombination EDM ist zur geläufigen Bezeichnung für ein Musikgenre geworden, das für manchen Zeitgenossen ein rotes Tuch ist. Nicht selten fallen Aussagen wie etwa: “Das hat doch nichts mehr mit Psytrance zu tun. Dieser EDM-Scheiß ist einfach nur Kommerz und zum Kotzen!” Musikhistorisch könnte man EDM in der Tradition von Euro Trance ansiedeln – ebenfalls ein Begriff, der extreme Reaktionen hervorruft. Beiden Genres ist gemein, dass sie mit kurzen, eingängigen und im Arrangement vordergründig platzierten Melodie- und Rhythmus-Figuren arbeiten. Außerdem sind viele und häufige Breaks, die sich dann sich dann wieder zum Drop der Bassline steigern, sowie der Einsatz von Gesang sehr typische Stilmittel. Hier kommen wir nun zum Grund, warum EDM von manch einem Zeitgenossen mit Argwohn betrachtet wird: Die Musik wir als wenig anspruchsvoll betrachtet, sie ist leicht vorhersagbar und zielt, ganz ähnlich wie Schlager oder sonstige Volksmusik, auf Massenwirksamkeit und einfache Zugänglichkeit ab. In diesem Zusammenhang fällt dann oft auch das Stichwort „Kommerz“. Die dazugehörigen EDM Events setzen auf Größe und Show-Effekte, DJs wie etwa Steve Aoki, Avicii oder David Guetta formen mit ihren Händen ein Herzchen und werden dabei mit Kamera-Armen und Drohnen in Echtzeit auf Großleinwände übertragen, der klassische Popstar-Personenkult mit allen Möglichkeiten der modernen Unterhaltungstechnik ausgelebt.

Spätestens bei der gerade erfolgten Beschreibung von EDM Festivals dürfte jedoch auffallen, dass es durchaus Parallelen zur Psytrance Szene gibt. Denn auch hier wird schon lange nicht mehr wild durcheinander, hinein in die innere Welt von Trance getanzt, sondern meist schön mit dem Gesicht zum DJ, dessen Rumgehampel auf der Bühne manchen EDM Acts in nichts nachsteht. Auch musikalisch gibt es mittlerweile gewisse Überschneidungen. So haben sich Vini Vici mit der EDM Ikone Armin Van Buuren zusammengetan und basierend auf dem Track „Free Tibet“ von Highlight Tribe den Track „Great Spirit“ produziert. Vini Vici haben auch auf der Tomorrowland gespielt, das beeindruckend aufgemachte Paradebeispiel eines EDM Festivals mit 180.000 und mehr Besuchern. Dorthin wurde übrigens auch schon Neelix gebucht, bei dem sich die Geister der Psytrance Szene scheiden. Seine Tracks sind recht einfach aufgebaut und er hat schon vor vielen Jahren Vocals eingesetzt. Damit war und ist er ganz zweifelsohne sehr erfolgreich – vor allem in unserer Szene. Die Goa-Veteranen Raja Ram und Chicago spielen ebenfalls seit langer Zeit Remakes von großen Rock- und Pop-Klassikern, und gehören mit dieser mitgröhltauglichen Variante

von Psytrance ebenfalls zu den größten Publikumslieblingen. Man kann also nicht wirklich von einem Randphänomen sprechen. Wir haben die gerade genannten Künstler um einen Kommentar zum Thema EDM und der ablehnenden Haltung gebeten, mit der nicht nur die Psytrance Gemeinde, sondern auch große Teile der Techno und House-Szene gegenüberstehen. Die Reaktion war bezeichnend - nämlich sehr, sehr zurückhaltend. Wir interpretieren das als Beweis, dass wir hier den Finger in eine Wunde gelegt haben – denn wer selbstbewusst und souverän hinter dem steht, was er macht, kann es auch gegen die vorherrschende Kritik verteidigen.

Klopfgeister (Germany) are meant to follow all their lives. Music offers a chance to break rules. Why shouldn't we take that chance? And that psytrance is getting more commercial? Unfortunately 20 years too late! But every commercial trend causes an underground countermovement. For me, it is just important not to deny myself while producing music. Und wenn einer aus der Reihe tanzt, ist er oftmals außen vor und wird von der Familie auch leicht verstoßen. Zu den Remakes: Die ganze Musikgeschichte lebt aus dem Recyceln von Vorhandenem. Sampling ist ein essentielles Mittel der elektronischen Musik. Wichtig ist für mich, ob man einfach nur ein Lied-Abklatsch macht oder ein vorhandenes Element eines Stückes in einem

I often feel, that in terms of tolerance, the Goa scene is more dogmatic than every church. There is a Goa group on Facebook, where the admins always speak about „family“. But we find the biggest social pressure in families. They embody certain values. And if someone steps out of line, he or she might be easily excluded. About Remakes: Recycling existing resources is a fundamental part of music history. Sampling is an essential part of electronic music. The crucial difference is between just producing a poor copy or presenting an already existing element in a new piece of art, that contains added value or gives a new perspective. For me, every remix is useless, that doesn't tickle any new aspect out of the original version. But as far as I know, there are no rules cast in stone. Luckily, most young people are more tolerant than the people asking these questions. Most young people don't even know the codes of the sealed off scenes. They don't think in terms of what music is allowed to do or not to do. I think, that's exiting!Music is a way to express liberty. Society puts up so many rules, that people

Aber ich denke auch nicht, dass Regeln dazu irgendwo geschrieben stehen. Glücklicherweise sind die Jugendlichen viel toleranter als die Leute, die sich solche Fragen stellen. Die meisten Jugendlichen kennen die Regelkodexe der abgeschotteten Szenen dazu, was Musik darf und was nicht, gar nicht. Das finde ich sehr spannend. Musik ist für mich ein Ausdruck von Freiheit. Man muss in seinem ganzen Leben Regeln befolgen. Warum sollte man diese Regeln bei der Musik nicht einfach brechen dürfen. Und dass Psytrance sich kommerzialisiert? Leider 20 Jahre zu spät! Aber zu jedem Kommerztrend gibt es eine Gegenbewegung vom Underground. Wichtig ist mir bei meiner Musik, mich nicht selbst zu verleugnen. Ich mag jede Musik, bei der man erkennt, dass sie mit Herz gemacht wurde.

Some of it I like, some I don't, and fitting into the standard pigeon-holes is less interesting to me than having fun in the studio. I think you put your finger on it with your question: as well as all the people and events whose ears are definitely in the right place, all the things that psytrance people criticise EDM for are present in the psy scene as well, and many have been there since the beginning. That's the entertainment industry for you; we can try and pretend it doesn't exist but psytrance has just as much of a dark underbelly as EDM does, often hidden by that veneer of 'super spirituality' which people in other scenes rightly take the piss out of psy for. [...] As for EDM's influence on psy, cross-fertilisation is so often a good thing for creativity, and I think it's inevitable as some artists and promoters continue to draw inspiration from EDM in order to make music and events that will give them access to larger audiences. To my ears this sometimes means sacrificing the 'trance' element (vital IMO) of 'psychedelic trance' in favour of choppy arrangements and production trickery, but there's still creative stuff going on and as someone involved in a few different genres it's mainly creativity which matters to me,

„The negative attitude shown by the community is perfectly understandable, as psytrance at its core always was an underground movement, and even though its grown a lot, it still is underground compared to other genres. So any mainstream influence will always be rejected by a big chunk of the scene. However these remakes are nothing new, acts like GMS have been doing some since the early 2000's and I don't remember people complaining back then....now that psytrance is on a bigger scale, more voices and opinions are heard. Personally, while I played one or two of these covers in the past, i dont anymore...But if i would, i'd pick the right time and place for them, aka more commercial events or raves rather than in the more underground

When I was invited to the Silver Wings in Berlin a few weeks ago for Monika Döring's 80th (!) birthday, I felt very honoured. That this time also Monika left the floor as the last person, should not come as a surprise really. Apart from witnessing Monika in the 80s as an innovative and fair negotiating partner in the loft in West Berlin, during the high times of the true VooV-festival at the end of the 90s, it was already an experience to see one person still dancing In the middle of the floor after some stage set (including sleep): the indestructible dancing mouse Monika. Though at that time she wasn’t a teen anymore. It was there that I consciously noticed her for the first time again. That it was her merit to get GoaGil into the Tempodrom, I learned but later. For 5 DM it was a cool experience then, no question. Looking back, she says today that she is very happy to have found the best and most passionate organizers first with Mirko and then the Soundviecher. Again, years passed and the time of modern Psytrance (DarkPsy, Forest, HiTech) began. On the Cannibal Crow’s Psycrowdelica (R.I.P.) there again was a woman with a bleached short haircut, uninterruptedly dancing: Monika. She was even a mentor and supporter of new Psy styles, which has been more than helpful for the evolving scene. Her status as a pro for events and promotion helped a lot and she was also very dedicated in illuminating the atmosphere not only with self-baked goods, e.g. at indoor events, as well. The subscription of the mushroom magazine she bounced a few years ago, one reason being that the magazine did not contain anything about "Dark". The woman is still straightforward.

Monika Döring is still closely linked to music. As to dancing, Psytrance remains her dearest, and to listen to she indulges in interesting things á la Raster-Noton, a techno label from Chemnitz. When I took my leave of the many friends at the end of the party, she took embraced me and thanked me. And then began clearing up. (alpha)

Als ich vor ein paar Wochen zu Monika Dörings 80. (!) Geburtstag nach Berlin ins Silver Wings eingeladen wurde, fühlte ich mich sehr geehrt. Das Monika auch dieses Mal als Letzte den Floor verließ, sollte mich eigentlich nicht wundern.

holen, habe ich auch erst später erfahren. Für 5 DM war es seinerzeit ein cooles Erlebnis, keine Frage. Rückblickend sagt sie heute, daß sie sehr happy ist, zuerst in Mirko und dann in den Soundviechern die besten und leidenschaftlichsten Veranstalter gefunden zu haben.

Mal beiseite gelassen, Monika in den 80ern als innovative und faire Verhandlungspartnerin im Westberliner Loft erleben zu dürfen, war es schon in den Hochzeiten des echten VooV-Festivals Ende der 90er ein Erlebnis, nach so mancher Bühnenschicht (inklusive Schlaf) eine Person immer noch tanzend in der Mitte des Floors zu sehen: die unverwüstliche Tanzmaus Monika. Schon zu der Zeit war sie ja keine 20 mehr. Dort habe ich sie zum ersten Mal bewusst wieder wahrgenommen. Daß es ihr Verdienst war, GoaGil ins Tempodrom zu

Wieder vergingen Jahre und die Zeit des modernen Psytrance (DarkPsy, Forest, Hightech) begann. Auf der Psycrowdelica von Cannibal Crow (r.i.p.) war wieder eine Frau mit blondiertem Kurzhaarschnitt, dauertanzend: Monika. Sie war gar eine Mentorin und Supporterin der neuen Psy-Spielarten, was der sich nun entwickelnden Szene mehr als geholfen hat. Ihr Status als Pro im Veranstaltungs- und Promotion-Wesen half sehr und sie war auch sehr engagiert darin, z.B. bei indoor-Veranstaltungen die Atmosphäre nicht nur mit Selbstgebackenem zu erhellen. Das Abonnement des mushroom magazines hat sie vor einigen Jahren u.a. abbestellt, weil im Heft damals nichts über „Dark“ geschrieben wurde. Die Frau macht sich halt immer noch grade. Noch immer ist Monika Döring der Musik sehr verbunden. Zum Tanzen bleibt Psytrance ihr Liebstes und zum Anhören frönt sie interessanten Sachen á la Raster-Noton, ein Technolabel aus Chemnitz. Als ich mich zum Party-Ende von den vielen Freunden verabschiedete, nahm sie mich in den Arm und bedankte sich. Und räumte erstmal auf. (alpha)

Roberdo asks: What's it worth? This time I want to write about a problem that has been brought up in Social Media again and again: Many people out there refuse to pay money for music. That this is a serious problem, I have no doubt. As a matter of fact this problem affects mushroom magazine as well, because music labels make less money selling music and therefore have budget for adverts – adverts which pay for the production of this magazine. So today I don't want to deny this problem itself, but I want to have a critical look at the arguments. Those pictures that circulate on Facebook & Co. claim that “it costs thousands” to record an album. As a matter of fact, there are some very successful producers out there who only use a more or less good laptop and headphones. That's basically all you need to get started. Oh yes, and broadband internet. It enables you to download all those ridiculously expensive music programs, samples and plugins for free. Once you finished a track, you only have to invest a small amount of money to hire a mastering service that will add that certain loudness and pressure, so it is on one level with other productions. Actually you don't really need thousands to get going – technically, you can start on a fairly small budget. Sure, that mastering service we just mentioned has some seriously expensive gear – but hey, I haven't seen any mastering service lamenting about the unwillingness of people to pay for their service, probably because you can't download a high-end tube compressor illegally from the internet. The next claim is that the music “can be used over and over again”. Hold on a minute – if that's true, why are there different tracks in the charts here in

mushroom with every new edition? Well, you don't even have to be a DJ to understand that being new and up-to-date is as important as in any other market of the capitalist world. A really nice, solid dance floor tune can be played for a couple of weekends – then it's rendered irrelevant, because there's 100 new tracks that sound just the same, but that are new. Okay, some DJs play an oldschool tune or even an oldschool set every now and then. But let's be honest: That's an exception rather than the rule. Last but not least those pictures claim that “it took years of practice to create” a piece music. Well, maybe that's somehow true for the upper league of music producers, that consists mainly of immortal dinosaurs. In reality, there's all too often only a couple of weeks between the first audio track in the sequencer and the creation of the Facebook page for this new music project. And just like that the expectations towards money grow all too often very, very quickly. After only one or two years many producers ask for an artist fee that equals the monthly income of a casual worker, after three years in the game the time has come to ask for business class flights, because of all the stress of touring and all that. And what about those expectations? No matter if we talk about a dance track or a cup of coffee – it should be the most natural thing in the world that you have to pay something for it. The interesting questions are: Which price is appropriate? What's too expensive – and what's too cheap? Also: Exactly where is the money going, who earns how much?

Der Kern dieses Problems ist zweifelsohne eine harte Wahrheit. Als musiklastiges Szenemagazin ist z.B. auch der mushroom davon betroffen, denn die Budgets der Labels für Anzeigen, über die er sich finanziert, sind aufgrund jener Nulltarif-Mentalität drastisch zurückgegangen. Was ich heute dennoch kritisieren möchte, das ist die Argumentation, mit der das Problem angegangen wird.

So heißt es auf jenen Bildchen, die durch Facebook geistern, es würde „Tausende kosten“, ein Album aufzunehmen. Fakt ist jedoch, dass man mit einem halbwegs leistungsstarken Rechner und Kopfhörer schon mal ganz gut aufgestellt ist. Und natürlich mit einem leistungsstarken Internetzugang, der einem die teuren Musikprogramme, Samples und Plugins als Raubkopie zum Nulltarif auf die Festplatte bringt. Das Resultat kann man für zweistellige Summen zu einem Mastering Service schicken, um in Sachen Lautheit und Druck mit dem gängigen Standard mitzuhalten. Kostet also nicht die Welt, und der Rechner kann eine ganze Weile genutzt werden. Klar, das Mastering-Studio hat in der Tat weit höhere Auslagen - aber das Mastering-Studio jammert auch nicht, denn man kann einen absurd teuren Röhrenkompressor halt nicht aus dem Netz ziehen. Das nächste Argument lautet: „Die Musik kann immer wieder benutzt werden“. Dass diese Aussage mit Vorsicht zu genießen ist, beweist ein Blick in die Charts hier im mushroom. Die lesen sich nämlich immer wieder anders. Der Faktor Neuheit und Aktualität ist im hart

umkämpften DJ-Sektor genauso essentiell, wie in allen Märkten der kapitalistischen Welt. Ein guter, solider Dancefloor Track kann sich ein paar Wochenenden in der Playlist halten – danach ist er durch. Schließlich gibt es dann mindestens 100 neue Tracks, die ihm zum Verwechseln ähnlich klingen. Und wenn ein DJ tatsächlich mal ein paar Oldies dazwischen schustert, ist das, seien wir ehrlich, eher die Ausnahme als die Regel. Wieviel ist ein kreatives Wegwerfprodukt wert? Zuletzt wird noch behauptet: „Es erfordert jahrelange Übung“, die Tracks zu produzieren. Auch dies ist abseits der ersten Liga, die sich aus nicht tot zu kriegenden Dinosauriern zusammensetzt, oft nicht wahr. Denn zwischen der ersten Spur im Sequenzer und der Eröffnung der zum Projekt gehörigen Facebook-Seite liegen oft nur wenige Wochen, wenn überhaupt. In ähnlich kurzer Zeit wachsen Gagen- und sonstige Honorarvorstellungen in den hohen drei- oder sogar vierstelligen Bereich heran. Knapp drei Jahre nach dem ersten Release wird dann auch schon mal nach einem Flug in der Business-Klasse gefragt. Wie berechtigt sind solche Vorstellungen eigentlich? Egal ob Dance Track oder Tasse Kaffee - es sollte klar sein, dass man dafür auch etwas bezahlen muss. Es stellt sich jedoch die Frage: Welcher Preis ist verhältnismäßig? Was ist zu teuer - und was zu billig? Und: Wie wird der Kaufpreis verteilt, wer sieht wieviel davon?

„Trust your first impulse! If you feel something while producing, it is good” Klopfgeister from Hamburg reveals, how he discovered Goatrance and what kind of emotions he wants to trigger with his music. As „Nightsoul“, he has recently started a new project for experimental styles What are your musical roots? I started learning to play the flute and the piano, when I was a child. No big talent in the making, but I had a lot of fun. At the age of 16, I started DJing – just for myself. I felt frightened to DJ in front of people. Two years before, I had heart techno for the first time. As a rap fan, I thought: ,Hopefully, techno isn't taking over.' But when I was at a techno party for the first time, I knew immediately: ,That's my sound.' I grew up in Frankfurt, where the style, that later became popular as Goatrance, was just called Frankfurt-Techno. Which kind of emotions do you want to trigger with your music? Fun, joy and ,don't take life too serious!' I want people to get charged with positive emotions.

That's my goal rather than people using trance as an outlet for negative energy. What kind of production methods do you prefer? Digital or analogue? I recently found some toad sounds in the internet and cut the sounds. Or I cut some dinosaur-roaring out of a movie and play it reverse. I like every sound, that causes attention. To me, it doesn't matter, which methods are used to create these sounds. Nowadays, the digital tools already generate a decent quality. They are learning to play the analogue warmth in that way, that it sounds authentically. Similar to a robot, that understands irony. In the past, I tried to avoid any noises in my music. Today, I sometimes even use these noises as a style element.

What are your current projects? I have another project in the pipeline called Nightsoul. In January, I produced almost an entirely experimental album. The first release will be a remix for Safi Bros on the label L.S.D. - Liquid Sound Design run by Youth, who is by the way also the producer of Pink Floyd and founder of the first Goatrance labels in the 90s. For sure, a new Klopfgeister album is in the pipeline and many EPs. What kind of advice would you give young producers? If you feel something while producing and think, that it is good, it is good. Don't let friends influence you too much, because they often have a completely different taste. Trust your first impulse.

Als „Nightsoul“ hat er jetzt ein weiteres Projekt für experimentelle Stile gestartet Was sind deine musikalischen Wurzeln? Ich hatte als Kind zwar Klavier- und Flötenunterricht, jedoch war kein größeres Talent zu erkennen. Freude hatte ich auf jeden Fall. Mit 16 habe ich angefangen aufzulegen – für mich alleine. Ich hatte Angst, vor Leuten zu spielen. Zwar Jahre zuvor hatte ich zum ersten Mal davon gehört, dass es Techno gibt. Als Rap-Fan dachte ich: Hoffentlich wird Techno nicht so beliebt, dass Rap nicht mehr das Tollste ist. Aber als ich zum ersten Mal auf einer Techno-Party war, habe ich gewusst: Das ist mein Sound. Den Sound, der später als Goa-Trance bekannt geworden ist, nannten wir bei uns in Frankfurt einfach Frankfurt-Techno.

Welche Emotionen möchtest du mit deiner Musik auslösen? Spaß, Freude und ,nehmt die Trance Music nicht zu ernst!' Ich möchte eher, dass Leute mit positiven Emotionen aufgeladen werden als dass meine Musik ein Ventil für negative Emotionen ist. Bist du bei der Klangerzeugung eher digital oder analog unterwegs? Ich habe neulich Krötensounds aus dem Internet gesampelt und zerhackt. Oder ich schneide mir aus Filmen Dinosaurier-Grollen heraus und spiele es rückwärts. Ich mag jeden Klang, der auffällt. Und welche Mittel dafür sorgen ist mir ziemlich egal. Die digitale Klangerzeugung hat in den letzten Jahren sehr große Fortschritte gemacht. Inzwischen kann sie analoge Wärme so wiedergeben, dass sie fast authentisch klingt. So ein bisschen wie der Roboter, der Ironie versteht. Früher war ich

bedacht, dass bloß nichts rauscht. Heute nutze ich Rauschen teilweise sogar als Stilmittel. Was sind deine aktuellen Projekte? Ich habe ein weiteres Projekt: Nightsoul. Im Januar habe ich dafür fast ein ganzes experimentelles Album produziert. Jetzt kommen die ersten Releases, zufälligerweise bei Labels, die in den 90er Jahren die ersten Goa-Songs veröffentlicht haben. Das erste Release wird ein Remix für Saafi-Bros sein auf dem Label L.S.D. - Liquid Sound Design, welches im Übrigen von Youth, dem Produzenten von Pink Floyd, geführt wird. Ich arbeite außerdem am neuen Klopfgeister-Album und vielen EPs. Was würdest du jungen Produzenten mit auf den Weg geben? Wenn ihr etwas fühlt und es gut findet, dann ist es gut. Lasst euch nicht zu viel von Freunden beeinflussen, die oftmals einen ganz anderen Geschmack haben. Vertraut eurem ersten Impuls.

D: Actually I have been producing music for all my life, but in 2003 after doing two albums for Medium Records at some point I decided to take a break from the music business. After a couple of years things started to itch, and I found myself in the studio again, and actually producing some new tracks. When I went to this party in Muenster (Flammentanz) I saw Bim on the line-up and decided to bring something I had been working on. This track was “Universe”, and Bim liked and released it. From that point on I started sending more tracks to Bim, and Bim made suggestions. He suggested “can you try this?”, or “change that”, or ”come out of the break in a special way, build more energy” etc. That’s how things got rolling.

How did the two of you come together?

Would you like to illustrate how you go about a set and what happens during it?

D: For the most part, I am in the studio, building the bassses, the grooves, synth patches, and figuring out in which order they sound the best. But in the end, I am a technical person, who might not really have a target or purpose for the track, and this is where Andreas steps in. He always has a clear vision and colourful ways to express himself. This is the ingredient that brings our tracks to the next level.

D: When we play live, I have a setup, laptop, sound card, MIDI keyboard / controller. Pretty much of what we play is already set in a particular order. Andreas has his own laptop, with the same set, that we start synced. Both setups contain a set of samples - we each have our own - and effects with which we play and entertain the crowd. Then, when the set is running, we both have our own timeline on our own laptop, and we know which parts we want to play in the sounds we like, sharing the energy with the people on the dancefloor and also have that magical interaction.

B: I was lucky that somebody found me, as I am only the man with the mad ideas. He understands my vision, I understand him.

Mostly what happens is, Andreas finds a bunch of samples, or recorded something and sends it to me. In the studio I will process it, cut some subs,

How would you describe your cooperation as DJ’s?

mid-low frequencies, add some Reverb so that it will sound smoothly when we play it live. My own sample library mostly consists of FX, risers, drops, and some atmospheric tuned samples, or envelope pitched sounds, and I control Reverb, Delay and filters by the midi controller. When playing live, the really cool thing that can happen, is that we have this break, or a part in a track where we both feel we are losing the energy, and we both planned to play something to keep things interesting. Then we both start this idea, we have at the same time but did not expect from each other, so we are both totally surprised, look at each other like “Wow!” that sounded awesome, and the crowd picks those kind of things up and goes crazy on the floor. What’s your take of this Bim? B: I don't like to be somebody who is doing only the mixer during the live set. I told Michiel, I am a DJ. so, luckily

31 I had the Idea to bring my own laptop with the same timeline as Michiel and to play my samples and effects as DJ over the CDJ exactly in the right moment during the live set. So, what’s currently happening? In which direction will your music be heading in the future? D: Currently, we are working on our first album, the name will be ‘Public Enemy’. It will be a bit faster than our usual 138 bpm, a bit more psychedelic, and maybe also a bit darker but still very friendly and trancy. Digital OM is releasing this kind of music already - maybe a bit faster than what we are aiming for, haha - but we tried one EP “Mama Afrika” and it was a success. We have to give big credits to Digital Ohm and Nishan for doing an amazing job with the promotion! We might already have been making this kind of music, but now we will speed it up, make it more freaky while ensuring, that the flow is gentle and rolling. This way, we think, we can become a more interesting act to book for the nighttime. B: Exactly, we really hope to find a balance between trance and psychedelic trance. The same, but in a different way. It's always good to be different. What do you think makes your music different from the work of other artists? B: Other artists are doing an album in three or four months which is not possible for us. When we do it, we need a year, maybe more, because we like to be different with different styles and maybe together with some new talented artists. Like Ellinio and Orisma from Greece. I think, in the end, it will be a great soundscape and useful for everybody.

‘Public Enemy’ doesn’t invoke psychedelic associations. Why this somewhat peculiar name? D: The name of the album, ‘Public Enemy’ was chosen because in our scene we are all public enemies, what we do, how we live our life, which standards we maintain, it makes us public enemies.

B: Additionally, when you go on great party like we played in South-Africa. There are Jews, Christians, Muslims and Hindus, African, European and Asian people but on the floor we are one, and peaceful together. And this is very dangerous for the public, because when you change your mind you change the political rules.

Die Tanzmeute dreht ab, wenn Bim und Drukverdeler ihre beiden Laptop-Controller-Setups zu einer Symbiose verschmelzen und sich dabei unerwartete Klänge zuspielen Wie kamt ihr zusammen? D: Eigentlich habe ich mein ganzes Leben lang Musik produziert. Aber nachdem ich 2003 zwei Alben für Medium Records gemacht hatte, nahm ich eine Pause vom Musikgeschäft. Nach ein paar Jahren kribbelte es wieder. Ich ging wieder ins Studio und produzierte sogar neue Tracks. Als ich auf dem Line-Up einer Party in Münster (Flammentanz) Bims Name sah, steckte ich etwas ein, an dem ich gearbeitet hatte. Dieser Track war "Universe", den Bim mochte und veröffentlichte. Ab da schickte ich mehr Tracks an Bim und er steuerte Ideen und Vorschläge bei. "Kannst du das versuchen", "das ändern", oder "in besonderer Weise aus dem Break kommen, mehr Energie aufbauen" etc. So begann das mit uns. Wie würdet ihr eure Kooperation als DJs beschreiben? D: Zum größten Teil bin ich im Studio, lege die Basslinien an, die Grooves, die Synthesizer-Patches und überlege mir, in welcher Reihenfolge das am besten klingt. Aber am Ende bin ich ein Techniker, habe vielleicht kein Ende

oder Motiv für den Track, und da kommt Andreas ins Spiel. Er hat immer eine klare Vision und viele Ideen, sich auszudrücken. Dies bringt unsere Tracks auf die nächste Stufe. B: Ich hatte Glück, dass er mich gefunden hat, denn ich bin nur der Typ mit den verrückten Ideen. Er versteht meine Vision, ich verstehe ihn. Wie sieht die Zusammenarbeit aus und was kann während des Sets passieren? D: Wenn wir live spielen, habe ich ein Setup, Laptop, Soundkarte, MIDI Keyboard / Controller. Ziemlich viel von dem, was wir spielen, ist bereits in einer bestimmten Reihenfolge. Andreas hat seinen Laptop mit dem gleichen synchron gestarteten Set. Beide Setups enthalten Samples - wir haben jeweils unsere eigenen - und Effekte, mit denen wir spielen und die Meute unterhalten. Dann, wenn das Set läuft, mit der eigenen Timeline auf unseren Laptops wissen wir, welche Parts wir zu den Sounds spielen wollen, wie wir Energie mit den Leuten auf dem Dancefloor teilen und haben diese magische Interaktion.

Digital OM releast diese Art von Musik bereits, vielleicht ein bisschen schneller als das, was wir anstreben. Wir hatten mit ihnen die erfolgreiche EP "Mama Afrika" gemacht und müssen uns bei Digital OM und Nishan für tolle Promotion bedanken! Also, vielleicht haben wir diese Art Musik schon gemacht, die wir jetzt beschleunigen, freakiger machen mit einem sanften und fließenden Flow. Dadurch werden wir zu einem interessanteren Act für die Nacht.

B: Mir genügt es nicht, derjenige zu sein, der nur den Mixer während des Live-Sets bedient. Ich sagte Michiel: Ich bin DJ. Glücklicherweise kam mir die Idee, meinen eigenen Laptop mit

Was unterscheidet eure Musik darauf von der anderer Künstler? B: Andere Künstler benötigen für ein Album drei, vier Monate, wir brauchen ein Jahr, vielleicht mehr, weil wir gerne anders sind, mit verschiedenen Stilen und vielleicht zusammen mit ein paar neuen talentierten Künstlern so wie Ellinio und Orisma aus Griechenland. Am Ende jedenfalls wird es eine tolle Klanglandschaft und nützlich für alle. ‘Public Enemy’ klingt nicht gerade psychedelisch. Warum dieser ungewöhnliche Name? D: Der Name des Albums, ‘Public Enemy’, wurde gewählt, weil wir als Szene öffentliche Feinde sind. Was wir tun, wie wir unser Leben leben, unsere Standards macht uns zu öffentlichen Feinden. B: Wenn man auf eine tolle Party geht, wie die auf der wir in Südafrika spielten, sind dort Juden, Christen, Muslime und Hindus, Farbige, Weiße und Asiaten, aber auf dem Floor sind wir eins und friedlich. Dass ist für die Öffentlichkeit sehr gefährlich, denn wann man seine Einstellung ändert, ändert man die politischen Regeln.

Meistens findet Andreas ein paar Samples oder hat etwas aufgenommen und schickt es mir. Ich verarbeite es im Studio, schneide einige Subs, Mid-Low-Frequenzen, füge etwas Reverb hinzu, damit es reibungslos klingt, wenn wir es live spielen. Meine eigene Sample-Bibliothek besteht hauptsächlich aus FX, Risers, Drops und einigen atmosphärischen Samples oder umhüllenden Pitch Sounds, und ich kontrolliere Reverb, Delay sowie Filter über den Midi Controller. Wenn wir live spielen kann das wirklich Coole passieren, dass wir diesen Break haben oder einen Part in einem Track, bei dem wir das Gefühl haben, Energie zu verlieren, und wir wollen beide etwas spielen, um interessant zu bleiben. Dann beginnen wir beide diese Idee, die wir zur gleichen Zeit haben, aber nicht voneinander erwarteten. Also sind wir beide total überrascht, schauen uns verblüfft an, das klang super, und die Menge nimmt das total auf und geht ab auf dem Dancefloor.

Die Veranstaltung, das Label, der Club, der Oli Der ov-silence-Kosmos beinhaltet viele Dinge wie das Summer Opening und Closing, Humpty Dumpty OA, Techno Rabatz Open Air, Club Geschichte vom Juice Club bis zum Traxx und das Label. 2001 gab es das 1. Release (Daniel Vernunft, Axel), das Psytrain Album, 2006 die „Chapter 3“, mit frühem Neelix Track und ein Wechselspiel zwischen Prog und Psy. Als letzte physikalische Erscheinung kam 2007 die “Silicon Spring” mit Tristan, NOK, Hydrophonic u.a. Die Musik-krise 2007 ließ das Label ruhen. Seit vier Jahren ist ov-silence wieder aktiv, soeben erschien Second Side, eine EP von Berliner Newcomern im Progressive Psytrance Style. Der digitale Knoten ist am Markt noch nicht

ganz geplatzt, aber in Zukunft wird das Label die Booking-Sparte intensivieren und sich professionell weiter verstärken. Spannend.

The ov-silence-universe comprises many things as the Summer Opening and Closing, Humpty Dumpty OA, Techno Rabatz Open Air, club history of Juice Club, Traxx and the label. In 2001 there was the 1.release (Daniel Vernunft, Axel), the Psytrain album, in 2006 the „Chapter 3“, with an early Neelix track and an interplay between Prog and Psy. The last and latest physical release was 2007 the “Silicon Spring” with Tristan, NOK, Hydrophonic a.o. The crisis of music business in 2007 allowed the label to rest. Now for four years ov-silence has been active again and Second Side, an EP of newcomers in progressive psytrance from Berlin just got released. The digital penny has not yet dropped in the market, but in the future, the label will intensify its booking business and boost its professional team. Exciting.

The main thing is good music Sometimes it’s like that: You get to know a colleague, find him sympathetic, then over 2–3 seasons many encounters and cut. When we met again on the occasion of this article, the connection reoccurred immediately. But some things still have to be discussed, which had vacated our heads. For Andreas it actually began in the 90s, when he was into metal, indie, alternative as a DJ, and even achieved resident status at big festivals. Around '98 he was dragged onto Psytrance events and got instantly fueled by two things: the music and the mixing. What’s my name and what’s shaking?

He read books about plants, especially about Ayahuasca, liked the effect and intended to transfer this effect to Psytrance. The mix of initials, real names, personal things, and even the plant, resulted in: Aioaska. Entry into production. Andreas loves to incorporate ethno, real instruments and also rock and alternative elements. 2007 saw the first release on Synergetic Records. In 2011 the first live set "Oscill 4" came out. If he used the presets of the instruments earlier, he now has the sounds in his head and puts them together in the studio, Cubase and Reaktor helped him with this and he has been using the trendy modular systems for quite some time. Modular and then what? My objection that this was cheap recourse to the 1970s, he countered plausibly stating that

previously these same sounds had been desired but not right now, nothing preformatted, free space and coincidence while composing. Well, ok. In any case, he has pushed his productivity back on the fly, as he has born the ”Flow & Friends EPs“ series, launched at the end of 2016, for his label Flow EV Records, a concept where labels and external artists cooperate. The flow 3 festival CD, colabs with Gipsy Soul and Artificial and the future album with Taliesin testify to true enthusiasm.

In addition to his label job, the FLOW Festival (July 6 – 9, 2017) has to be prepared. One wish: Andreas tells me how impressed he is with the previous impact of the label and wants to keep this level (every time in the Psyshop Top 5). He wants to invest this motivation in order to provide a fair platform for young artists from Austria. "The style can go from ChillOut to Hi-Tech, the main thing is good music". That's how it is. Kreise sind zum Schließen da Vor 15–6 Jahren traf ich Bernd zum ersten Mal auf den berühmten Hüttschenthal-Parties. Seitdem knallte der Goazilla mir immer wieder über den Weg. Neuerdings auch als Tante Darkmar, was mich nicht kalt läßt.

Seit er vor einigen Jahren endgültig in die Hansestadt übersiedelte, hat er sich enorm weiterentwickelt, viele Gigs gespielt und ist aus der Szene nicht mehr wegzudenken. Psy Prog und jetzt Darkpsy? Bernd sieht das entspannt, war immer schon an härterem Sound interessiert, aber er hat sich erstmal den goldenen ProgPsy-Käfig gebaut. Diesen Kreis hat er seit zwei Jahren um Tante Darkmar erweitert. Er nennt das Erwachsenwerden, hehe. Das Goageflüster brauchte ihn seinerzeit für den Dark Floor und wo er schon mal da war.... Jedenfalls macht es ihm Spaß und er hat sich

neu ins Mixen verliebt, durch die akustisch anspruchsvolleren Sounds gefordert, hat er seinen Mixstyle Richtung Perfektion ausgebaut. Der Kreis wurde größer. Auch mit USB-Sticks dreht er seine Mixrunden, wie bei der Cosmo In Space Party im Juice Club, wo er sich derbe geehrt fühlt, auf dem „hammerharten Rumgerave“ mit dem Hightech-Giganten Cosmo spielen zu dürfen. 15 –16 years ago I met Bernd for the first time at the famous Huttschenthal parties. Ever since, the Goazilla always bumped into my path. More recently also as Tante Darkmar, which does not leave me cold. Since he moved to the Hanse city a few years ago, he has progressed enormously, played many gigs and cannot be imagined off the scene any more. Psy Prog, and now Darkpsy? Bernd is relaxedly disposed towards that, had always been interested in harder sound, but at first he established the golden ProgPsy cage. Two years ago he has extended this circle with Tante Darkmar. He calls maturing, hehe. At the time the Goageflüster needed him for the dark floor and as he was there already....At any rate, he is enjoying himself and has fallen in love again with mixing, urged by more acoustically sophisticated sounds, he has upgraded his mix style towards perfection. The circle grew larger. With USB sticks he does his mix rounds too, like at the Cosmo In Space Party at the Juice Club, he feels mighty honoured to be allowed to play on the "hammer-hard rave-about" with Hitech giant Cosmo. A Psy-spirit, who seemed to have "arrived" in the scene with his set on the Fusion in 2006, never satisfied, who rather preferred groupies over fans, was in the middle for years and yet out again, a chameleonized artist.

The Chillantrop

Maik even ladled out on Techno, but he finally found his freedom within the Psy music in Ambient / Downbeat. When the Internet took off, it became immediately his musical worldwide treasure chest. Schön zu hören, dass du Gefallen an Dark gefunden hast! Damit ist der erste Schritt zur Erleuchtung bereits getan. Allerdings ist das mit dem Tanzstil eine ernste Sache und es ist gut, dass du deshalb fragst. Du musst verstehen, dass Goa Partys total locker und extrovertiert sind, allerdings nur im Rahmen eines sehr klar definierten Regelwerks. Hardstep-Schritte oder ähnliche Faxen solltest du tunlichst unterlassen – das ist einfach zu extrovertiert. Immer schön aus der Hüfte stampfen. Außerdem ganz wichtig: Immer schön entrückt und erleuchtet aus der Wäsche gucken. Dann klappt's auch mit den Elfenmädchen!

I'm 32, and I spent the last 10 years in the Hard Techno and Gabber scene. Now I discovered Dark Psy. It's fucking amazing, loving it. But I noticed that people look kind of funny when I go crazy on the dancefloor. Especially those sweet elf chicks. My question: How should I dance at a Goa party?

It's great to hear that you like Dark Psy so much. It means that you are already on your way to cosmic enlightenment. However, it's really important how you dance – and it's good that you asked. One thing you have to understand about Goa parties is that they are super relaxed and extroverted, but only within a clearly defined framework of rules and procedures. When it comes to dancing, you should always face the DJ. In this way you show that you understood the principles of “We Are One” which are super important for the scene. Unity and all that, you understand? Forget about your Hardstep moves and similar fooleries – that's clearly a bit too extroverted. Stomping is the golden path to enlightenment. Speaking of: You should always look as if you are just being enlightened – you will see that it works very well to hook up with those elf girls!

Some people are so alternative, so different from society that they end up hating everything that is alternative in comparison with themselves. Back in the Hippie era, it was considered “square” to have sex with the same partner twice – because it's obviously the first step towards marriage, establishment, capitalism. A Goa Nazi would never buy a falafel from a shop where they play Deep House, because Deep House kills the spirit of Goa, as everyone knows.

Breathtaking artworks on naked skin: At the 20th World Bodypainting Festival in Austria from 24-30th July 2017, the world's best artists cause surreal encounters. If you want to win, you have to give everything. It probably takes one year to get prepared. The quality of bodypainting has risen, similar to other arts like for example tattooing. There is a huge number of breathtaking artworks. Who nowadays wins a title at the WBPA, really deserves it.” “How much a title in bodypainting means, really depends on where the artists works. In Germany, you might have a few advantages. But the woman from South Korea, who won last year in the category 'Brush and Sponge' will probably benefit from that in her home country a lot more. As I experienced it, there are not many jobs for bodypainters available in Germany. Festivals or parties haven't been the places for me to make big money. And in the commercial party business, bodypainting is often just used as an excuse to show naked breasts. I'm the wrong person for that. In general, bodypainting is a 'nice to have', but no 'must have'. That's economic reality. It's hard to make a living out of bodypainting. I don't know a lot of people, who are able to manage that.” This year, Wolf Reicherter wants to take it really easy on the festival. His intention is to meet friends, to teach and to learn. The fact, that he is specialized in UV blacklight bodypainting might be very interesting for Psytrance festival fans. “In the UV blacklight, the transformation comes into full effect. If the painting is well done, your own body is able to move into the background. The layers of colour change the feeling for your own body. You don't feel naked anymore. Concurrently, you are gaining energy, when you see yourself in a mirror“, says Wolf Reicherter. From 1999 to 2005, he did bodypainting at a few official Mushroom Magazine parties and at festivals. “Whenever it comes to creating a good bodypainting, I still listen to trance.“ The workshops take place from July 24th to 30th. In Deutschland mag es einem leichte Vorteil bringen, aber zum Beispiel die letztjährige Gewinnerin in ,Pinsel und Schwamm' wird in ihrem Heimatland Südkorea aus ihrem Titel einen viel gewaltigeren Vorteil für ihre Arbeit ziehen können. Bodypainting-Jobs in Deutschland sind meiner Erfahrung nach nicht sehr breit gestreut. Wirklich Geld verdient habe ich auf Parties oder Festivals auch nicht. Im kommerziellen Party-Bereich geht es auch oft nur um eine Ausrede für nackte Titten. Und da bin ich der falsche Mann für. Grundsätzlich muss gesagt sein: Bodypainting ist ein ,nice to have' und kein ,must have'. Das sind wirtschaftliche Realitäten. Von Bodypainting als reinen Gelderwerb zu leben ist taff. Da kenne ich nicht viele, die das hinbekommen.“ In diesem Jahr will Wolf Reicherter es entspannt angehen, Freunde treffen, lernen und lehren. Gerade seine Spezialisierung im Schwarzlicht-Bodypainting ist auch für Psytrance-Festivalgänger spannend. „Es ist die Verwandlung, die gerade im Schwarzlicht noch viel stärker zur Geltung kommt. Der eigene Körper kann komplett in den Hintergrund treten, wenn es gut gemacht ist. Die Farbschichten verändern das Körpergefühl. Du bist nicht mehr nackt. Gleichzeitig gibt es Dir richtig Power, wenn Du Dich selbst im Spiegel siehst“, sagt Wolf Reicherter. Als Künstler war er auf manchen offiziellen Mushroom-Magazine-Parties und von 1999 bis 2005 beinahe jedes Wochenende auf Psytrance Parties und Festivals. „Wenn es um gutes Bodypainting geht, läuft bei mir immer noch Trance.“ Die Workshops laufen vom 24.-30. Auf einer mushroom tour Party in Hamburg kreierte der süddeutsche Künstler Wolf Reicherter bereits die Vorstellung fantastischer Wesen aus anderen Welten. Für alle, die die Verwandlung durch Bodypainting bei Tag oder Nacht selbst erleben oder andere spüren lassen wollen, gibt er hier einige Tipps.

Use professional body painting color to avoid any risks to your health. Make sure, you find the producer's name and address written on the product as well as a list of contents. Pay attention to hygiene. Don't let anybody put his fingers into the color. It's the easiest method to start with brush and sponge. UV body painting: Start to draw lines and see, what happens. To present a UV body painting to great effect, it's advisable to use one or two 120 centimeters long 40 watts strong blacklight tubes and to put them upright.

Benutze professionelle BodypaintFarbe, auf der explizit ein Hersteller mit Name, Adresse und Inhaltsangabe steht, um Gesundheits– gefährdungen auszuschließen. Achte auf Hygiene. Lass niemanden mit nackten Fingern in deine Farbe fassen. Am Anfang geht es mit Pinsel und Schwamm am einfachsten. Beim UV-Bodypainting: Fang mit Linien an und schau, was dabei herauskommt. Um die Ergebnisse des UV-Bodypaintings ins rechte Licht zu rücken, nutze am besten ein bis zwei etwa 120 Zentimeter lange aufrecht aufgestellte 40-Watt-Röhren.

A festival wants to make social change happen

Wurzeln barrierefrei zu gestalten. Es gibt dieses Jahr keine Extra-Bereiche, wie z.B. eine Rollstuhlbühne, sondern alle können immer und überall dabei sein. Natürlich gibt es trotzdem auch behindertengerechte Sanitäreinrichtungen und ein Inklusionscamp, wo Betreuung gewährleistet ist. „Wir sind total überrascht, wie positiv unser Publikum den Inklusionsgedanken angenommen hat,“ sagt die Crew. „Wir haben unzählige Mails bekommen von Leuten, die einfach nur helfen wollen. Genau diesen Spirit brauchen wir auch in unserer Gesellschaft: Einfach mal sehen ‘wie kann ich einem anderen helfen oder eine Freude machen’ - ohne direkt zu überlegen welchen Vorteil ich davon habe.“

How can a festival inspire change in everyday life, how can a festival change society? Zurück zu den Wurzeln, German for Back to the Roots, has a very interesting approach. The basic idea: Persons with disabilities are people just like you and me, and that's how they want to be treated. After the festival in 2016, which had a really refreshing underground vibe by the way, the crew decided to make their open air a barrier-free event. This year there won't be any special areas, like e.g. a stage for wheel chairs. No, everyone can party anywhere with anyone, at any time. Of course there's specially equipped bathrooms for those with disabilities and an Inclusion Camp with 24-hour support. “We are really surprised, how positive our audience reacted to the idea of inclusion”, says the festival crew. “We received countless emails from people who just want to help. That's exactly the spirit we need in society: Just to help others or to make others feel better, with no strings attached, without thinking about one's own advantage and profit all the time.“

08.–11.06.2017, Niedergörsdorf – Deutschland So ziemlich alle reden drüber, diese Crew macht tatsächlich auch eine ganze Menge: Die Grenzen, die uns das Leben im modernen Alltag setzt, überschreiten. Und zwar nicht nur kurzfristig, in den Köpfen auf der Tanzfläche – sondern langfristig. Der Aufwand, welchen die Zurück zu den Wurzeln für Menschen mit Beeinträchtigungen betreibt, ist ein sehr schönes Beispiel dafür, wie ein Festival wirklich nachhaltige Inspiration fürs menschliche Zusammenleben liefern kann. Der Grundgedanke: Menschen mit Beeinträchtigungen sind wie Du und Ich und wollen auch so behandelt werden. Nach dem Festival 2016, das mit seinem erfrischend untergründigen Vibe übrigens durchweg überzeugen konnte, kam also die Idee, die Zurück zu den

Nachdem sich das Psychedelic Circus Festival zuletzt mehr und mehr zu einer festen Größe auch im internationalen Festivalsommer etabliert hat, erfuhr das Festival in den letzten Jahren einen Feinschliff in Sachen Qualität.

vielversprechend: Das dritte Jahr in Folge wurde das 3delica Team für die Dekoration der Mainstage angeheuert und das zeigte sich bisher als extrem ambitioniert, insbesondere mit seinen tollen LED-Installationen. Und zuletzt ist auch das Line Up überaus vielversprechend: Mit z.B. Obwohl die Beliebtheit schon eine ganze Weile unverändert hoch ist, empfanden viele das letzte Open Air als etwas ganz besonders. Selbst von eingefleischten Zirkus-Fans konnte man Aussagen hören wie: „Mein lieber Herr Gesangsverein, das war echt mal herausragend!“. Die Messlatte wurde offenbar noch ein Stückchen höher gesetzt – was uns zur interessanten Frage bringt: Wie kann das dieses Jahr noch getoppt werden? Vielversprechend klingt auf jeden Fall die Ansage, man wolle das Zirkus-Thema mit vielen kleinen und großen Details noch mehr ins Konzept einbinden. Sogar das Zirkuszelt wird mit eigenem Dancefloor zurück kommen. Ebenfalls

The festival has become one of the most popular ones for quite some time already, but apparently the last edition stepped up a notch. Even long-year Circus fans made statements like: „Holy moly, that was really quite something!“ The quality standard has been pushed a little further – which leads us to the interesting question: Will they manage to make it even more amazing this year? Well, at least there are some very promising indicators pointing that way. For instance, the crew wants to embrace the circus theme even more by introducing some small and some not so small details. Even the circus tent returns and will host a dance floor. Another promising detail: The 3delica crew has been hired to decorate the main floor for the third time in a row. In previous editions they managed to push the visual limits again and again, especially with their fantastic LED installations. Last but not least there's the lineup: There's Skazi, the crazy Brazilian Claudinho Brasil, 1200 Micrograms, Phaxe, Upgrade and Mr. Pink, who will not only do what he is well-known for, but who will also play a DJ set. Die Crew ist auf See, die Vorbereitungen laufen. Bereit für Runde zwei. Das Second Horizon Festival ist auch in diesem Jahr auf dem wunderschönem Gelände des Kiekebuschsee bei Berlin. Nicht nur die Anreisemöglichkeiten sind super, auch das Gelände spricht für sich. Ob mit dem Auto oder der Bahn, eine Reise ist es allemal wert. Denn seid ihr erstmal da, werdet ihr sofort in den Bann der „Psy-PirateWelt“ gezogen. Ob Tanzen am schönen Strand mit den Zehnspitzen im Wasser oder gemütliches Schlendern durch den Zauberwald, alles ist möglich rund um den See. Vom letzten Jahr kennen wir das Schiff auf dem „Second Horizon Beach“, auch dieses Jahr dürfen wir Großes erwarten. Alles aus natürlichen Materialien, eins mit der Natur, ist die Crew jetzt schon damit beschäftigt, wieder eine unvergessliche Zeit für alle Seeräuberinnen und Piraten am Kiekebuschsee zu schaffen. Der wunderschöne Wald wird in buntes Licht getaucht, das Auge hat an jeder Ecke was zu entdecken, woran das Herz sich erfreuen kann.

Der See wird zu einem Meer aus Farben, auf dem man seinen Gedanken freien Lauf lassen kann. Versüßt wird euch das alles auch auf den Floors, mit großartigen PsyLichtspielen, fantastischen Bauten, Deko rund um das Thema „Pirates“ auf Land und auf See sowie gutem Essen und tollen Acts aus allen Ländern. Ein Ort an dem die Seele frei sein kann, es geht um das gemeinsame, Tanzen, Lachen mit dir sein. Musikalisch wird dieses Jahr so ziemlich alles von Prog bis Hitech über Techno und House vertreten sein, mit mehr als 120 DJs verteilt auf 3 Floors. Auch die Kunst kommt nicht zu knapp, mehrere psychedelische Kunstausstellungen mit internationalen Künstlern zollen ihr Tribut. Auf dem Horizon Beach liegt der Fokus ganz klar auf dem riesigen Holzschiff, welches Nachts in ein Meer aus farbigen Lasern und Nebelschwaden getaucht wird.

Die Parrot Bay punktet dagegen mit Video Mappings und einem außergewöhnlichen Bühnenkonstrukt. Unser technoide Monkey Cage überzeugt wiederum durch eine szenetypische Lichtshow, viel Charme und einer perfekten Positionierung in unserem wunderschönen Wäldchen. Wasser gibt es in Tanks auf dem ganzen Gelände verteilt und im Norden des Geländes eine Trinkwasser Hauptleitung. Im Vergleich zum letzten Jahr wurden die Sanitäranlagen massiv aufgestockt und mit Toiletten und Duschwagen erweitert. Derzeit befinden sich die letzten 500 Online Tickets im VVK - danach heißt es früh anreisen, um sich Tickets an der Abendkasse zu sichern. Whether dancing on the beautiful beach with the tip of the toes in the water or relaxed strolling through the magic forest, everything is possible around the lake. From the last year we know the ship on "Second Horizon Beach", this year we can also expect great things. The beautiful forest will be bathed in colourful light, the eye shall discover things at every corner which can delight the heart. The lake turns into a sea of colours, on which one can give free rein to oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s thoughts. Made even more comfortable by the floors, with great psy-lighting, fantastic buildings,

decoration invoking "pirates" on land and at sea, as well as good food and great acts from all countries. A place where the soul can be free, it is about unity, dancing, laughing, being with you. Musically, this year will be pretty much cover everything from Prog to Hitech over Techno and House, with more than 120 DJs on 3 floors. Art will sure be present too, several psychedelic art exhibitions with international artists pay tribute. On Horizon Beach, the focus is clearly on the huge wooden boat, dipped into a sea of coloured lasers and fog patches at night. Whereas the Parrot Bay satisfies with video mappings and an extraordinary stage design.

Again our technoid Monkey Cage convinces with a scene-typical light show, a lot of charm and perfect positioning in our beautiful grove. Water is distributed in tanks all over the site and a drinking water main in the site's north. Compared to last year, the sanitary facilities were extensively ramped up and expanded with toilets and shower carts. Currently, the last 500 online tickets are available at pre-sale - afterwards this means to arrive early in order to secure tickets at the door. Auf Mainfloor wird es nachts wohl etwas flotter zur Sache gehen, wer es eher groovig mag kann sich auf der ebenfalls neu gestalteten Alternative Stage treiben lassen.

Klein, aber fein: Das Flow setzt auf Qualität statt Größe und schafft damit optimale Voraussetzungen für ein entspanntes Wochenende im Fluss von Rhythmus und Liebe.

The term flow describes a mental state in which a person is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of an activity. It's also the name of a festival just outside Vienna that seems to be the perfect place to reach this mental state. Last year this open air had just the right size to guarantee a super nice family vibe, while the overall quality could easily keep up with big, international productions. The Flow Festival is held in a series of old gravel pits which have been reclaimed by nature: There's shrubs and trees everywhere, creating a very earthy and organic... flow! As for the decoration, the organizers decided to work with the Anzu Creations crew again. Original quote: “We already saw the sketches for the stage design. It's gonna be unreal!” They also decided to make the Avaloka Temple bigger this year, because the Healing-, Drum- & Sound-Circle of this area got some very good feedback. In terms of music, the lineup speaks for itself. A forest, a river, a delightful lineup for all Psytrance freaks, many psyche-licious extras, and a stunning reminder how beautiful Portugal’s nature is: A chat with the promoters of Freedom Festival.

We learned that the final result gets more interesting if the project is embraced by people with spirit and passion for what they are doing. Most important is not to cut their wings, let them fly high! How would you describe the vibe you're trying to create at Freedom this year? Imagine you are on vacation and luckily you have a big festival nearby. Exactly that will happen, you can choose to dance, to learn from workshops, to go for a walk on the shops avenue, but you can also explore the river with all its beaches and amazing places.

Wir haben gelernt, dass das Endergebnis interessanter wird, wenn Menschen, die mit Geist und Leidenschaft dabei sind, das Projekt betreiben. Freedom will give you the opportunity to explore Portugal’s real beauty. What's the most amazing aspect about the festival?

Wie würdet ihr den Vibe beschreiben, den ihr auf dem Freedom dieses Jahr erschaffen wollt? Stell dir vor, du bist im Urlaub und zum Glück ist ein großes Festival in der Nähe. Genau das wird passieren, man kann wählen, zu tanzen, bei den Workshops zu lernen, auf der Ladenzeile spazieren gehen, aber auch den Fluss mit all seinen Stränden und erstaunlichen Orten erkunden. Das Freedom gibt dir Gelegenheit, die wahre Schönheit Portugals zu erkunden.

The place itself. It's a magical green valley full of ancient trees with a river that crosses the festival. We don't want to spoil this landscape, we want to merge into it. We work with Mae&Moa, Bioluminescence, Something Groovy, and more. The dancefloor will be in the shade of giant trees. In the night the place will transform in the lights of video mapping, LED effects and 14 optikinetics projectors. Ein Wald, ein Fluss, ein herrliches Lineup für alle Psytrance-Freaks, viele psyche-liziöse Extras und eine atemberaubende Erinnerung, wie schön die Natur Portugals ist: Ein Chat mit den Promotoren des Freedom Festivals.

Was ist erstaunlichste Aspekt des Festivals? Der Ort selbst. Ein magisches grünes Tal voller alter Bäume, einem das Festival überquerenden Fluss. Wir wollen diese Landschaft nicht verschmutzen, sondern in ihr aufgehen. Wir arbeiten mit Mae&Moa, Bioluminescence, Something Groovy und anderen. Die Tanzfläche liegt im Schatten riesiger Bäume. In der Nacht wird der Platz transformiert durch Lichter des Video-Mappings, LED-Effekte und 14 optikinetische Projektoren. Es gibt die Zen-Area auf einer sandigen Insel, die Sonnenuntergänge vom Chill Out zu sehen, wird episch.

New Healing vom 14. bis 20. August am Badesee Preddöhl steht wieder unter dem Motto „May all beings be happy.“ Es ist eines der landschaftlich schönsten Festivals zwischen Hamburg und Berlin: Wieder verspricht das New Healing Festival durch eine Melange aus traditioneller Partykultur und spirituellem Input eine klangvolle Festivalwoche mit Musik, Kunst und Inspiration für ein gesundes und glückliches Leben zu werden. Im Healing Land trifft man sich im Tipi Town zwischen Zelten und Ständen, schlendert den liebevoll dekorierten Waldweg zum Badesee entlang. Nachts lockt der illuminierte Zauberwald. Die Healing Days bieten ab Montag rund 200 Vorträge, Konzerte, interaktive Angebote und Workshops wie Theater

14.–20.August 2017 Badesee Preddöhl / Germany Dancing and recharging energy between Trance Areas, Tipi Town and Magic Forest: The 4th New New Healing Festival takes place from the 14th to 20th of August at the bathing lake Preddöhl – under the slogan „May all beings be happy“ It's one of the most scenic festivals between Hamburg and Berlin: With a mixture of traditional party culture and spiritual input, the New Healing Festival promises to become again a week-long festival full of sounds, music, art and inspiration for a healthy and happy life. Inside the Healing Land, people meet in Tipi Town between tents and stalls, from where you can start strolling along the lovingly decorated path to the bathing lake. At night, the illuminated magic forest is waiting. From Monday on, the Healing Days offer more than 200 lectures, interactive actions, concerts and workshops like theater performance, shamanism and chakra meditation. At the Healing weekend, the big Trance Areas and the alternative Chill & House Space get opened for the more than 4000 expected visitors. Vom 8. bis 9. Juli präsentiert der Club The Suite mit Pear Suite in Neustadt an der Weinstraße ein Psytrance-Festival, das seinem Namen alle Ehre macht. Der Mannheimer Club Suite hat seit 1996 stets ein klares Bekenntnis zur Psytrance-Szene gesetzt. Auch nach seinem Umzug nach Neustadt an der Weinstraße setzten die Veranstalter diese Tradition fort. Mit Pear Suite präsentieren sie vom 8. bis 9. Juli in guter Erreichbarkeit vom Bahnhof ein Psy-Festival auf Open-Air- sowie Indoorflächen, das dem Namen des Clubs alle Ehre macht. Mit Martin Glover haben die Veranstalter einen echten Veteranen der Psytrance-Szene für das Event Pear Suite gewinnen können. Außerdem werden die Saafi Brothers

mit klanglichen Elementen aus Ambient, Trance, Dub und Techno zu einer musikalischen Seelenreise nach Indien einladen.
