Trotz aller Tendenzen der Diversifikation und Abspaltungen in Dark, Prog, Psy, Tech & Co haben wir den UnityGedanken nicht verloren, schließlich feiern wir doch meistens noch alle gemeinsam. Uns hat das Jahr mit Euch wieder einmal viel Spaß gemacht. Und weil Ihr (naja die meisten jedenfalls) brav gewesen seid, lässt sich die psychedelische Weihnachtsfliege vom Titelbild nicht lumpen und hat ein paar Geschenke mitgebracht. Music Production Special GETTING STARTED WITH MR. LIQUID SOUL!

Die Qual der Equipmentwahl ist durchgestanden, das kleine Homestudio ist eingerichtet und nun kann es endlich losgehen, mit der ersten eigenen Produktion. Doch wie geht man am besten vor? Was gilt es zu beachten? Der Schweizer Nicola Capobianco, besser bekannt als Liquid Soul, erfreut sich mit seinen ausgetüftelten Arrangements und herausragender Produktionsqualität in allen Lagern der Trance Szene großer Beliebtheit und war somit der denkbar beste Ansprechpartner zur Beantwortung dieser Fragen. Wenn Du mit einem neuen Track anfängst, solltest Du für mindestens ein paar Stunden Zeit und Ruhe haben, besser noch ein ganzes freies Wochenende. Bevor Du den Sequenzer startest, schließe Skype, MySpace & Co und schalte am besten auch Dein Handy aus, denn Ablenkung kann man beim kreativen Schaffen nicht gebrauchen! Nicola empfiehlt, zu Beginn eine kleine Jam- Session zu veranstalten, in der man spielerisch mit seinen Ideen herumprobiert: „Ich persönlich fange meistens mit einem kleinem Loop mit allen rhythmischen Elementen wie Kick, Bass und Percussion an“. Auf diese Weise findet man recht schnell heraus, welche Elemente richtig gut Druck machen und kann diese erst einmal sammeln. Wenn man schon am Anfang eine bestimmte Melodie im Kopf hat, sollte man natürlich damit beginnen, diese möglichst perfekt im Sequenzer einzuspielen. Beim nun folgenden Aufschichten und Aneinanderreihen der einzelnen Spuren zum eigentlichen Track ist es wichtig, darauf zu achten, dass die einzelnen Sounds

„von Anfang an sehr gut klingen und harmonisch zueinander passen und dass zudem alles ansprechend abgemischt ist, um dem ganzen seine gewisse Brillanz zu geben“. Das Abmischen ist übrigens ganz grundsätzlich ein entscheidender Punkt beim Produzieren, bei dem Anfän-

ger häufig Fehler machen: „Es ist sehr wichtig, sich Zeit zu nehmen und den Mix gut auszubalancieren. Am besten, man hört sich im eigenem Studio mal aufmerksam andere Produktionen an. Sehr empfehlenswert ist es auch, die fertigen Songs auf ver-

schiedenen Lautsprechern abzuhören, um sich so ein Bild zu machen“. Auch wenn es zunächst etwas widersprüchlich zu sein scheint: Man sollte auch nicht all zu lange an einzelnen Sounds verharren. Denn das Ohr gewöhnt sich recht schnell und dann ist ein objektives Urteil kaum noch möglich. Es besteht die Gefahr, sich in einzelnen Sounds zu verlieren. Im Idealfall gerät man in einen stetig fortlaufenden Workflow. Aber natürlich ist dieser bei jedem irgendwann zu Ende: „Klar, das kommt oft vor und ich mache dann einfach an einem anderen Song weiter. Man sollte sich auf keinen Fall zwingen, weiter zu

machen, wenn die Ideen oder der Flow ausbleiben. Manchmal liegen meine Songs für ein Jahr auf der Festplatte rum, bis ich sie wieder aufmache und versuche weiter zu kommen“. Zum Schluss erinnert Mister Liquid Soul noch daran, das kreative Moment von Musik nicht zu vergessen: „Es ist wichtig, seinen eigenen Sound zu finden und nicht einfach zu kopieren, was andere machen. Ich finde es schade wenn man keine eigene Ideen reinbringt und somit nur ein Abklatsch ist. Musik ist frei gestaltbar und man sollte das auch nutzen!“ Roberdo

GETTING STARTED WITH MR. LIQUID SOUL! The agony of equipment choice has been coped with, the home studio is set up and the first own production can finally start. But how to proceed? What should one be aware of? Nicola Capobianco from Switzerland, better known as Liquid Soul, enjoys vast popularity in all the different camps of the Trance scene with his sophisticated arrangements and outstanding production quality. So he was exactly the right contact to address these questions to. When starting with a new track, you should have at least a couple of hours time without getting bothered by somebody, a whole weekend is even better. Before starting the sequencer, close Skype, MySpace & Co and switch off your mobile, because distraction is absolutely not wanted when being creative. Nicola suggests to perform a kind of small jam session at first, just to test some sounds and play around with some ideas: “I personally start with a small loop very

often, that includes all the rhythmic elements like kick drum, bass and percussion”. In this way, one can figure out pretty well which elements have special potential and sort them a little bit. If you have a particular melody in mind when starting, try to get it into the sequencer straight away. After experimenting and sorting a little bit, start arranging the actual song by piling up the various tracks. But do it very carefully: “The single sounds should have excellent quality right from

the new Vaishiyas album »Satisflaxion«

Vaishiyas Flaxid, Flaxible, Action Flaxion... Satisflaxion! Wenn es um zeitgenössischen Progressive Trance geht, kommt man früher oder später unweigerlich auf die Arbeit von Hannes Klitta zu sprechen. Mit seinem Projekt Vaishiyas rangiert er nicht erst seit gestern unter den weltweit derzeit beliebtesten Produzenten dieses Genres. Unvergessen sind die Auftritte auf der Boom 2006 oder der Universo Paralello des selben Jahres, wo er die Tanzflächen trotz anfänglicher Skepsis mit seinen modernen und schnittigen Sounds zum Kochen brachte. Gerade erst hat der Gründer von Spintwist Records sein viertes Album „Satisflaxion“ auf dem eigenen

Label vorgelegt, dessen Veröffentlichung am 12.12. in der Fabrik Wöbbelin gefeiert wird . Etwa 6 Monate Arbeit, unterbrochen von lediglich einer Beschwerde der Nachbarn, äußern sich in einer erneuten Entwicklung seines Stils: „Das neue Album ist definitiv mehr 4-tothe-floor, die Songs sind DJ tauglicher und vom Songwriting her sehr durchstrukturiert, so dass letztendlich alles viel tanzbarer ist. With his project Vaishiyas, he ranks among the currently most popular producers of this genre, and that not only since yesterday. His gigs at Boom 2006 or Universo Paralello the same year have

become unforgettable moments because he managed to make the dancefloors go entirely banana despite having been sceptic initially due to his very modern and straightforward sounds. Now the founder of Spintwist Records just presented his fourth album “Satisflaxion” on his own label, the launch will be celebrated on the 12th December in the Fabrik at Wöbbelin. The result of six months of diligent studio work, only interrupted by one complaint of the neighbours, expresses a repeated evolution of his style: “The new album is definitely more 4-to-thefloor, the songs are more suitable for DJs and the whole thing became very well-structured concerning the song writing. I also put a lot of emphasis on catchy melodies, that often resulted from jam sessions with Live 8, as one can hear in Hold On, Axon & John or Satisflaxion, for example”. Considering that his last works had not really bad feedbacks from the dancefloors also, this is a pretty interesting statemen. Pascal Kleiman Follow your dreams and don’t give up! Was macht einen richtig guten DJ aus? Das gewisse Händchen für die richtige Platte im richtigen Moment? Nun, das kann es nicht sein, wie Pascal Kleiman aus Valencia beweist: Er wurde nämlich ohne Arme und somit auch ohne Hände geboren - und ist trotzdem ein wirklich guter Aufleger! Brother Moon Sister Sun Einen musikalischen Spiegel der gegenwärtigen Psy Trance Szene schaffen: Nichts Geringeres hat sich das süddeutsche Label BMSS, das sich hinter der Überschrift verbirgt, zur Aufgabe gemacht. Zu diesem Zweck geht nun die erste Compilation „A Concept in Psy“ an den Start. Vollkommen neu ist BMSS aber eigentlich nicht, denn als fester Bestandteil des Untergrunds verfolgen DJ Boom Shankar und sein Tribe mit diesem Projekt schon seit zehn Jahren ihre Vision von Trance- Kultur. Die Gründung des Labels war in diesem Zusammenhang ein logischer Schritt: Von hier aus können sie den Sound der vielen talentierten Künstler, die sie im Laufe der Jahre entdeckt haben, hinaus in die globale Trance Community senden. Eine erste, von Dj Saltaux zusammengestellte Kostprobe erscheint am 11. Dezember. Die insgesamt zehn musikalischen Beiträge von u.a. Creating a musical mirror of the current Psy Trance scene: Nothing less is the aim of the South German label BMSS, that hides behind the acronym. What is the story of BMSS, is it just another Trance label? Boom Shankar: BMSS is not recentlyfounded. Furthermore, it is a project mainly active in the underground for a decade now. We organized festivals and parties in different countries of Europe. BMSS Records is just the next logical step in this kind of evolution. We want to support the vision and the artists we featured in the line-ups of our events, spreading the musical message as far as possible. We have the goal to make BMSS a mirror for the steadily evolving Psy Trance scene with all its colours. We are not only focussed on night time Trance, day time music has the same relevance. The only element which is important and thus necessary: The music has to be intelligent and psychedelic! The name of your first compilation is pretty meaningful: “A Concept in Psy”. What ideas did you have in mind while compiling this one? Saltaux: We wanted to give our best for the Psy Trance scene with our favourite artists presented on our first release, which is out on 11th December. Ambientium Wenn sich der 31-jährige Lubos Cvrk aus der Tschechischen Republik Trance, Techno oder andere elektronische Tanzmusikproduktionen anhört, stößt er schnell auf die doch recht engen Grenzen, in denen sich diese Spielarten bewegen: Immer wieder bestimmen gewisse Rhythmen, Sounds und Arrangements eine Stilrichtung. Die musikalische Sozialisation des heute 29-jährigen Mathias Weigoldt aus Hannover ist stark elektronisch geprägt und ausgesprochen vielfältig: So war es zunächst die Musik von Computerspielen, die ihn faszinierte. Ab 14 standen dann Rave, Techno, Jungle und Drum’n’Bass auf dem Programm und vor etwa neun Jahren entdeckte er die Welten von Chill Out und Easy Listening. Was ihn an diesen ruhigeren Gangarten elektronischer Musik besonders reizt, ist die Tatsache, dass er hier abschalten und entspannen kann: „Ich empfinde melancholische, harmonische Musik als schön, weil sie einen zum nachdenken anregt. Das muss nicht heißen, dass es einen dann runterzieht, das kommt immer auf die Stimmung drauf an, bei mir löst es eher Freudentränen aus. Johan Potma Nach seinem Studium an der Kunstschule versuchte der Niederländer Johan Potma sich als freischaffender Illustrator durchzuschlagen, doch es war sehr schwer. Ein Glück für die Welt der Gegenwartskunst, dass er wenig später in seiner Wahlheimat Berlin den ihn stilistisch wunderbar ergänzenden Künstler Mateo kennen lernte... Dieser regte ihn an, sich mehr auf sein eigentliches Talent, die Malerei, zu konzentrieren und auf diesem Gebiet noch mehr Erfahrung zu sammeln. Nach kurzer Zeit sollte sich nicht nur eine tiefe Freundschaft entwickeln, sondern auch die gemeinsame Galerie Zozo-

ville in der Mainzer Str. eröffnen, heute mit ihrem freakigen Charme eine spektakuläre Sehenswürdigkeit der Hauptstadt. Einen typischen Arbeitstag kennt Johan nicht, jedoch geht er nach wie vor darin auf, sich im spielerischen Kritzeln mit dem Stift zu verlieren und so entstehen dann auch seine vom Alltag in all seinen Facetten inspirierten Motive. Ein großes Kompliment war für ihn, dass sich jemand eines seiner Bilder tätowieren ließ. Aber am meisten freut es Johan eigentlich, wenn junge wie alte Menschen beim betrachten seiner Arbeit frei zu lachen beginnen. This one, whose creative work wonderfully completed with the style of Johan, encouraged him to rather focus on his real talent, painting, and to gather more experience. Some time later not only a deep friendship had developed but also the mutual gallery Zozoville in Berlin’s Mainzer Straße opened, a place that with its freaky charm has become a spectacular sight of the German capital. There is no typical working day for Johan but he still loves to get lost in playful doodling with a pen. This is also the intuitive way in which his motives evolve, inspired by everyday life in all its different facets. A huge compliment for him was somebody had one of his paintings tattooed. March 2010 (Hamburg / Germany) „Die Gäste sollen mit einem guten Gefühl auf die Party kommen und die Party auch mit einem guten Gefühl verlassen“ – so lautet die Losung der kommenden Brotherhood of Trance. Zu diesem Zweck wird der Geist einer gleichnamigen Veranstaltungsreihe aus den Mittneunzigern noch einmal wiederbelebt. Die Besucher erwartet also ein für heutige Verhältnisse außergewöhnliches Konzept, bei dem das Vergnügen der Gäste ausdrücklich im Vordergrund steht.

Denn damals wie heute gilt: Gut Trance will Weile haben! Und so wird es am ersten Märzwochenende ganze 48 Stunden ohne Unterbrechung zur Sache gehen. Eine sorgsam ausgewählte Mischung von Plattendrehern wird in extra langen Sets ihre Fähigkeiten unter Beweis stellen und dafür sorgen, dass es den Gästen das Gegenteil von Langweilig wird. Und nicht nur die musikalischen Räume laden zu spannenden Erkundungen ein: Als Veranstaltungsörtlichkeit wurde der Hamburger Festplatz Nord gewählt, dessen weitläufige Räumlichkeiten zur Feier des Wochenendes vollständig geöffnet werden und innerhalb des Clubs für interessante Abwechslungen sorgen. Wie Eingangs erwähnt, steht das Amüsement und das Wohler-

gehen der Gäste auf der Bortherhood of Trance im Vordergrund, daher soll auch der Eintrittspreis für die mehrtägige Party keinesfalls als Spaßbremse wirken und auch die Getränkepreise an den Theken sind sehr moderat angesetzt. Manche behaupten, diese ursprüngliche Form von Trance Partys sei heute nicht mehr möglich. Ob es trotzdem noch geht, werden die Gäste zeigen!
