CURATOR'S CORNER NEW VOICES AT THE HALL - Thérèse LaGamma, Deputy Director of Programming & Performing Arts Curator February marks a time of new discoveries and debut performances. Join us on Thu., February 1 for what is certain to be an unforgettable evening with Benjamin Clementine. This unique artist, poet, composer, and musician started his career busking in the streets and subways of Paris and is now headlining stages like Carnegie Hall. His unique voice and style have earned him comparisons to Leonard Cohen and Nina Simone. His music defies categorization. Fans of Kamasi Washington will want to pay attention to this performer, whom the New York Times described in 2016 as one of 28 geniuses defining modern culture. It won’t be long before he becomes a household name. I am also thrilled to welcome independent recording artist José González to the Seacoast and introduce him to our Music Hall family. He’ll be making his debut appearance as part of our Intimately Yours series on Thu., February 8. González’s parents fled Argentina in the late 70s and resettled in Gothenburg, Sweden. He is known for his beautiful singing voice and infectious songs, and his music has been featured on movie soundtracks. Trained on classical guitar, his technique is impressive! When asked about his influences he cites a varied list of artists and musical styles, from Latin American to hip hop, from the Beatles to Michael Jackson, from indie rock to West African desert blues. Don’t miss the chance to catch this rare talent when he performs on The Music Hall’s stage.

A Bright Future Gail VanHoy Carolan, Director of Institutional Advancement When I saw my first show at our Historic Theater, it looked a lot different than it does today. The lower lobby didn’t exist, the inside of the theater was painted paper white and peeling off on patrons, our chandelier was a trash can lid with floodlights in it, and our marquee was made of particle board. We knew this theater had great bones, and it was time to think about how we were going to preserve her. As I became more and more involved here at The Music Hall, we formed

a plan to restore and sustain our beloved theater, including bringing in an innovative Executive Director. Thanks to Patricia Lynch and her vision, over the last twelve years, we’ve returned the theater back to its original splendor, created the showstopping lower lobby with those iconic bathrooms, installed a breathtaking chandelier, opened our black box theater, the Loft, and, just over a month ago, added a vintage-inspired illuminated marquee. Watching the marquee lights go on for the first time was a truly spectacular night, and a proud moment for all of the people who helped us turn a theater on the brink of becoming condos just thirty years ago into the “Crown Jewel” of the Seacoast. Each time I walk past the marquee, I’m reminded of the amazing visionaries who fought to keep the lights on so many years ago. Their stewardship and foresight created the foundation that has allowed us to become what we are today. While we celebrate our milestones, we are also looking towards the future. Once we put the finishing touches on our Chestnut Street Improvement Project, the outside of the Historic Theater will finally match the gorgeous inside. Because we are in the center of the cultural district of Portsmouth, we felt that it was important to highlight the other attractions around town. I am excited that later this year we’ll be erecting a wayfinding arch that will guide people to The African Burying Ground, Prescott Park, and the West End, among other locations. It’s an exciting time here at The Music Hall and we are all so fortunate to be a part of this incredibly supportive, fantastic community!
Members Give a Gift that Lasts a Lifetime We are committed to making sure tickets to our holiday show are available to families in need. The Give the Gift of Magic campaign provides unforgettable experiences of holiday enchantment to those less fortunate. Two of our devoted members, deeply moved by the opportunity to give back in this way, are Jackie Gadsden and Laurel Dunn. Warm-hearted and funny, Jackie and Laurel are passionate about the arts, which Laurel values “for its ability to encourage expression; to share our views and our heritage.” The two foster appreciation for the arts in their five grandchildren and are frequently seen at The Music Hall. They do not take their access to the arts for granted. Jackie serves on the Board of Arts In Reach, empowering at-risk teen girls through creative expression. Jackie and Laurel share their Music Hall tickets with AIR girls and others who might not have the chance to attend, and when they heard about Give the Gift of Magic, Jackie says, “It was a no brainer! Of course we wanted to help.” With members like Jackie and Laurel, Give the Gift is sure to become a bigger success each year, making certain that everyone in our community can share in the holiday magic.
