CURATOR'S CORNER 20 YEARS OF TELLURIDE BY THE SEA: A CONVERSATION WITH BILL AND STELLA PENCE CHRIS CURTIS, Film & Outreach Manager The Pences moved to Portsmouth in 1999, and approached The Music Hall that same year with an idea to show a sample of film premieres from the Telluride Film Festival, which they had helped found in 1974. Although Bill and Stella moved from Portsmouth to Sleepy Hollow, NY last year, thankfully that has not changed much for us. Bill remains The Music Hall’s Film Curator, which means I still have the good fortune of being in touch with him each month about the film schedule. And Telluride by the Sea (TbtS) continues—now, in its 20th year. I spoke with Bill and Stella recently about the course that TbtS has charted through the years. “The film that sticks out for me from that first TbtS in 1999 is David Lynch’s Cannes Palme d’Or nominee, The Straight Story. Such an interesting film,” says Bill. Stella offers, “The year

(2000) we brought George Butler’s retelling of Shackleton's ill-fated expedition to Antarctica, The Endurance—that stands out in my memory. We had the replica ship from the film onstage, which was revealed to the audience when the screen flew up after the film. What a night!” Bill continues, “What truly excited me in bringing this festival to Portsmouth is that it brought back the feeling of Telluride Film Festival in its early days before it became the internationally known festival it was to become. Telluride by the Sea is smaller, more intimate.” Stella adds, “Another great aspect of this festival is that folks come with open minds, very often knowing little of what to expect from the weekend’s program...Challenge yourself, take a risk.” Bill and Stella will be back! “We’re still here,” says Bill. “We’re coming back to town to attend opening night and looking forward to it!” TheMusicHall.org

THE OGUNQUIT PLAYHOUSE AT THE MUSIC HALL PRESENTS

Photo: Sydney Bilodeau

Telluride by the Sea Tips & Tricks Prepare for TbtS with a few tips and tricks we’ve learned over the past 20 years.

BUY A PASS All year long, most of us carefully choose what movies we'd like to go out (or remain on our couch) to watch. Here's a chance to maybe challenge yourself to try a film that might not initially draw you. Commit to the weekend and know that you may not love every film, but perhaps your horizon will be broadened. Passes get you preferred seating for all films, an invite to Saturday night's Festival Party, and admission to pass holder-only Loft films.

PLAN AHEAD Give yourself extra time for parking. While The Music Hall staff can survive entirely on popcorn alone, we don't recommend it for everyone. Make a plan to enjoy at least one of Portsmouth's outstanding restaurants (many of whom are our neighbors and members at The Music Hall) and don't forget to make a reservation in advance! And you can review our parking tips online.

REPRESENT TBTS Don't forget to buy shirts and other merchandise ahead of time! This year, order online and pick from a wide range of products and colors, so you can get exactly what you

NOVEMBER 28 DECEMBER 16 AT THE MUSIC HALL IN PORTSMOUTH, NH

want in advance. Order at Zazzle.com/the_music_hall

DRESS FOR WEATHER Plan for inclement weather. Waiting in line is seldom anyone's favorite activity—least of all waiting in line wet. Comfy shoes and layers are generally a good idea too.

Buy your tickets now & get the best seats!

PASSHOLDER LOFT SERIES Check out the weekend's Loft series: films chosen based on a theme and in some way related to Telluride Film Festival in Colorado. These films are only for pass holders. Patron Passholders get first seating.

NEW STREETSCAPE The new and improved Chestnut Street now has smooth granite benches,

PRESENTING SPONSOR:

lush greenery, and a non-slip street! Not only are there more places to sit, but also the street is much easier to walk on. Take in the lovely new path and admire the arch and marquee while you wait. If you have a question, look out for Music Hall staffers. They're the ones running around with STAFF on their backs. And don’t forget to keep an eye out on social media and our blog for updates and special announcements!

Groups get great discounts, call 603.766.2203 for more information. Perfect for business outings & family gatherings.

WHITNEY R

• 2h • UK 8/31, 9/1, 9/4, 9/5 • 7pm; 9/1 • 1pm Whitney Houston broke more music industry records than any other female singer in history. With over 200 million album sales worldwide, she was the only artist to chart seven consecutive U.S. No. 1 singles. She also starred in several blockbuster movies before her brilliant career gave way to erratic behavior, scandals, and death at age 48. This documentary is an intimate, unflinching portrait of Houston and her family that probes beyond familiar tabloid headlines and sheds new light on the spellbinding trajectory of Houston's life.

LEAVE NO TRACE PG

• 1h 49m • US 9/8 • 1pm; 9/8, 9/11, 9/12, 9/13 • 7pm The new film from Debra Granik (Winter’s Bone). Will (Ben Foster) and his teenage daughter, Tom (Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie), have lived off the grid for years in the forests of Portland, Oregon. When their idyllic life is shattered, both are put into social services. After clashing with their new surroundings, Will and Tom set off on a harrowing journey back to their wild homeland.

THREE IDENTICAL STRANGERS PG13

• 1h 36m • UK 9/18, 9/19 • 7pm Three strangers are reunited by astonishing coincidence after being born identical triplets, separated at birth, and adopted by three different families. Their jawdropping, feel-good story instantly becomes a global sensation complete with fame and celebrity, however, the fairy-tale reunion sets in motion a series of events that unearth an unimaginable secret—a secret with radical repercussions for us all.

POPE FRANCIS - A MAN OF HIS WORD

PG • 1h 36m • Switzerland • some subtitles 9/22 • 1pm; 9/25, 9/27 • 7pm Wim Wenders' new documentary is intended to be a personal journey with Pope Francis, rather than a biographical documentary about him. The pope's ideas and his message are central to this documentary, which sets out to present his work of reform and his answers to today's global questions. From his deep concern for the poor and wealth inequality, to his involvement in environmental issues and social justice, Pope Francis engages the audience face-to-face and calls for peace.

MOUNTAIN PG

• 1h 14m • Australia 9/29, 10/3, 10/4 • 7pm Only three centuries ago, setting out to climb a mountain would have been considered close to lunacy. Mountains were places of peril, not beauty, an upper world to be shunned, not sought out. From Tibet to Australia, Alaska to Norway armed with drones, Go-Pros and helicopters, director Jennifer Peedom has fashioned an astonishing symphony of mountaineers, ice climbers, wingsuiters, parachuting mountain bikers, and many more. Willem Dafoe provides narration.

CUBAN FOOD STORIES NR

• 1h 22m • US/Cuba • some subtitles 8/31, 9/1, 9/4, 9/6 • 7pm; 9/2 • 1pm After ten years living as an expat in the United States, Asori Soto decides to return to his homeland of Cuba to search for the missing flavors of his childhood. This is a journey to discover culinary traditions long thought lost due to the hardship that Cuba survived after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Cuban Food Stories is a unique film about food, society, and culture on the island of Cuba. A journey that will leave your mouth watering as we go from the middle of nowhere to the big cities and rediscover the culinary roots of an exciting Cuba in a time of change.

LOVE, CECIL NR

• 1h 38m • US 9/9 • 1pm; 9/11, 9/12 • 7pm Oscar-winning set and costume designer, photographer, writer, and painter Cecil Beaton was not only a dazzling chronicler, but also an arbiter of his time. From the 'Bright Young Things' to the front lines of war, to the international belle monde and the pages of Vogue and then onto the Queen’s official photographer, Beaton embodied the cultural and political changes of the twentieth century. In this tender portrait, director Lisa Immordino Vreeland (Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has To Travel, Peggy Guggenheim: Art Addict) blends archival footage and photographs with voice-over of Beaton’s famed diaries. Narrated by Rupert Everett.

SCOTTY AND THE SECRET HISTORY OF HOLLYWOOD

NR • 1h 38m • US 9/19, 9/20 • 7pm The deliciously scandalous story of Scotty Bowers, a handsome ex-Marine who landed in Hollywood after WWII and became confidant, aide-de-camp, and lover to many of Hollywood's greatest male—and female stars. In the 1940s and '50s, he ran a gas station in the shadow of the studio lots where he would connect his band of friends from the military with those who had to hide their true sexual identities from the public. This cinema verité documentary tells his story, as well as an alternate preStonewall history of Hollywood.

PICK OF THE LITTER NR

• 1h 21m • US 9/21, 9/25, 9/26, 10/2 • 7pm; 9/30 • 1pm This documentary follows a litter of puppies from the moment they're born and begin their quest to become guide dogs for the blind. Cameras follow these pups through an intense two-year odyssey as they train to become dogs whose ultimate responsibility is to protect their blind partners from harm. Along the way, these remarkable animals rely on a community of dedicated individuals who train them to do amazing, lifechanging things in the service of their human. The stakes are high and not every dog can make the cut.

COMMUNITY

Visit TheMusicHall.org/Blog for more behind-the-scenes info!

Member Spotlight: Jeanne Supple Membership Coordinator Alexis Hahalis chatted with Jeanne Supple from Measured Progress, one of our fantastic School Days Series sponsors, about the importance of family time, her love for The Music Hall, and the benefits of membership.

Photo: Monte Bohanan

Dog Days & School Days Our Director of Marketing & Communications, Monte Bohanan, caught up with his kids Eli (11) and Izzy (7) at the Loft and bribed them with popcorn and Shirley Temples to talk about their experiences at our School Days Series.

What is your favorite part about coming to School Days shows with your class? Eli: I like sitting in the balcony. And I love it when the curtain goes up and everybody gets quiet just before the show starts.

Izzy: I've seen Clementine, Cat in the Hat, and Dragons Love Tacos. That one was my favorite, because if the Dragons ate a spicy taco, their fire exploded.

Do you ever talk about the shows in your classroom before or after you see them? Eli: I remember we were studying the Civil War and we saw a show about a boy who escaped a slave plantation in the South and ended up fighting for the North. It was really cool.

Izzy: We read the books before the show and talk about the characters after.

Your employer, Measured Progress, is a supporter of our School Days Series, and you’ve brought your granddaughters to several matinees. Are the two related? Which came first? I’ve attended events at TMH with different family members for several years. Last year, when Measured Progress became a sponsor of the School Days Series, I was fortunate to able to bring each of my two granddaughters to a couple of the matinees. They are the perfect age to attend them, and it gives me a wonderful opportunity to spend 1:1 time with each of them.

Photo: Sydney Bilodeau

We see you at the Hall often, for a variety of events. What has been your favorite show or most memorable moment? Oh my goodness, I have to think about this one. Over the years I’ve attended concerts, the Met at The Music Hall operas, Opera Connections, author events at both the Historic Theater and the Loft, movies, Director’s Club, Film Club, guest appearances—and I’ve been lucky enough to go backstage for some of them (for instance old family friend Jay Leno)—and other events too numerous to mention. I have to say my favorites (too difficult to find just one!) are the holiday productions. My three children are adults with partners, children, and lives of their own. My Christmas present to them each year is to create a memorable experience by treating them to the holiday show at The Music Hall. We get all dressed up, enjoy a lovely brunch at a local restaurant, and head to the last Sunday matinee of the annual holiday show. We fill a center balcony row and have watched Mary Poppins fly, felt "snow" at the end of White Christmas, and witnessed the Beast become a handsome prince. I can’t wait until December to attend Elf The Musical to see what memorable

SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT A Toast to LaBelle Winery

THIS MONTH'S MEMBER EVENTS

The buzz is building for Telluride by the Sea. While we can’t yet name the films we’ll be screening, we are happy to announce our Presenting Sponsor: LaBelle Winery. LaBelle Winery produces over 30 different wines, from sparkling wines to dry and semi-sweet traditional reds and whites, to port and dessert wines, at their facility in Amherst, NH. The gorgeous campus is worth the trip, whether it be for a special event, a tour of the vineyard, or a meal at The Bistro. But you no longer need to leave Portsmouth to visit LaBelle; last September Photo: Sydney Bilodeau they opened LaBelle Winery Portsmouth, home to wine tastings, a wine and gift shop, and an art gallery. And the best part? It’s just next door to the Historic Theater, making it an ideal spot to visit before or after a film (their hours vary; check their website for details). As an added bonus, show your Music Hall member card for a complimentary wine tasting and/or 10% off your purchases! We think a lovely red—or white—pairs well with a film premiere so we’ll be serving LaBelle wines at our bars during Telluride. While you’re milling about Chestnut Street between films, stop in at the shop to have a taste, or visit our bar for a full glass. It’s the perfect opportunity to help us welcome LaBelle to The Music Hall family. Learn more about LaBelle Winery online at LaBelleWineryNH.com.
