The keyboard programming can be as simple or as sophisticated as your resources allow. Most keyboard sounds are self explanatory – I often use organ pipe terminology to specify the sounding octaves (8’ is at pitch, 16’ an octave lower, 32’ is two octaves lower and 4’ is an octave higher). Some more details for specifc sounds follow.
Air Pad
Boy Treble with Sop (8va) Pad (Peter Pad)
Celeste & Electric Piano
Celtic Lead
Crunch & Hook scrape
Electric Cello
Guzheng, Bouzouki, MK1, Celtic Harp
Light, breathy pad
A boy treble sound with an etherial pad and soprano an octave higher – also referred to as “Peter Pad”
A mix of Celeste with a subtle electric piano
Penny whistles, Uilleann pipes, recorders etc., . . . a robust mix
Something loud, sudden and shocking
The original orchestration used electric cello – play with effects as you see ft to create other worldly sounds
A mix or world plucky instruments – nothing too location specifc, but should have ‘bite’
Harp, Harp Harmonics and Harp Bisbigliando Three common harp effects
Hum Choir
Ice Bells
Light Shimmer
Organ Pedals
Percussion Bells (no pitch)
Pizz Violin Section in Hall
Single Reed Accordion
Staccato Violin, Flute, Harp & Pad with 8th
A warm, humming choir in reverb – often blended with other tremolo instruments (harp, mandolin, guitar)
Light, frosty bell synth
Breathy, magical air effect – not Star Trek
Pipe details 8’ = at pitch, 16’ = octave below, 32’ = two octaves below, 4’ = octave above
Specifcally used in “Lost Boys Gang” – inspired by the loop sample available with orchestration
A pizzicato violin section in a healthy amount of reverb.
Simple clarinet stop on the accordion – never with tremolo reed. Stay away from France!
An orchestral mix sound of light short articulations with note delay (“Something In The Air Tonight”) gentle quaver (8th note) delay
Sweeping Pad
Symphonic Lead
Tink Piano
Magical wind blowing through clouds as a fying effect –not Battlestar Galactica . . .
Generally a monophonic instrument with a mix of orchestral woodwind and strings in multiple octaves. Always a lead sound.
An upright piano with a little glock and sparkle added
Wood Pipes
World Lead
World Pipes
Warm folky mix of recorder, wooden futes, soft wooden organ pipe, etc.
Similar to World Pipes but with a bit more heft! Add Duduk and sitar; an alternative to the symphonic lead
A mix of several fute and wind instruments from around the world. Bolder than wood pipes, not as brazen as World Lead.
* Bansuri Flutes – Our original woodwind player was an expert performer on wooden / bamboo futes and these added a wonderful colour. If this option is available to you, please feel free to utilise them (but know that the part works just as well without). The score calls for a set of Bansuri futes played in a ‘world’ music style. They are non-chromatic transposing instruments. The Woodwind part suggests which instrument to use, but also has an equivalent concert-pitch staff (for clarity, or for performance if the ethnic futes are not used – in this instance an alto fute could cover the lower passages). All the Bansuri parts are written in the key of D and transpose accordingly.
