Risk is a factor prevalent in society and most of the �me it occurs when we are not prepared. In simple terminology, risk is defined as a possibility of a hazard happening. It is therefore prudent on the part of individuals to know how to manage risk. We at Management Insight, as leaders in risk management make it our obliga�on to impact knowledge however li�le it is on this valuate topic. Risk Management is done mainly by insurance companies who offer cover should a hazard occur. From a home perspec�ve the risk of fire occurring and gu�ng the home down is very high. Should this happen ones needs cover to replace the burnt property this is where risk management comes in. Preparing for a possible hazard or elimina�ng the hazard altogether is what we term risk management. Risk is not only found in the work place, it is also found on our roads where the risk of traffic accidents is very high and in our social gathering such as sports galas etc. The risk of an athlete collapsing when it is too hot are very high and measures to mi�gate should be put in place. As can be see our dear readers, it is impera�ve at least to have knowledge about this discourse. Latest regulations fall short in addressing all fire-safety design issues
The newly-released 2020 version of SANS 10400-T, ‘The application of the National Building Regulations - Fire Protection’, still does not adequately address all of the issues related to fire-safety designs. This caution comes from ASP Fire CEO Michael van Niekerk, who notes that informal settlements and wildland urban fire interfaces, to mention a few, are not addressed. The acute lack of water and effective options to deal with it are also not included, albeit in commentary form. “Our latest sprinkler code is in draft format, and is currently in circulation for comment. However, that is also not, to the best of my knowledge, a comprehensive standard like the American NFPA 13 standard for sprinklers,” van Niekerk points out.

Meanwhile, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) has collaborated with a coalition of over 70 international organisations to develop a new fire safety global standard. The project aims to bring reassurance to people across the world that the buildings and infrastructure they use follows the best worldwide expertise on fire safety, RICS reported in a statement. “I believe that international collaboration makes perfect sense, because unlike politics or cultural differences, fire burns everywhere in pretty much the same manner. The development of a standard that includes knowledge, experience and skills from across the globe can only be of benefit to all,” van Niekerk adds.

Cast Iron: Why Raw Material Selection Counts?
Gravity-based structures are a quite common type of tidal turbine foundations, kept in place by the additional ballast. The ballast can stabilise as well specific offshore equipment such as connectors and/or dynamic cables of floating offshore wind installations. FMGC cast iron ballast can vary in shape and weight and can reach up to 20 tones.
Everything starts with the raw material selection. The quality, engineering process and even how the piece will be painted and logistically handled depend on the material. FMGC recommends the use of cast iron for maximum reliability, resistance and robustness.

Morningstar solar controllers for protecting oil & gas operations and making mining operations safer
The fossil-fuel industry, particularly oil and gas, depends on the renewable energy industry for many aspects of extraction, production and transportation. Pumping and mining operations are often far removed from access to the electrical grid, and using generators is often prohibitively expensive and impractical. At the well, renewables are called upon to power injection pumps, lighting equipment, and monitoring devices. Along the pipeline, renewables are often the only means of providing cathodic protection to prevent corrosion and ensure pipeline integrity. Renewable energy provides costeffective, dependable electricity for mission-critical communications, data acquisition, metering, site security, and much more.

Cathodic protection is primarily used to protect steel structures buried in soil or immersed in water and offers many advantages for corrosion protection. Electronic cathodic protection must maintain constant voltage and current to be effective. Therefore, it is important for these sites to maintain good charging control and communications typically via satellite or other wireless communications. In mining, many of the same conditions apply. Far removed from grid electricity, mines require on-site electrical generation for critical safety systems and security systems. Often this electrical demand is on top of the already high power-consumption of an operating mine, which also has to take heavy mining,
transportation and ventilation equipment into account. Solar electric-powered lighting towers are increasingly used to provide power generation for dispatch, data networks, data and lighting. For on-site lighting, mining operations often use mobile light trailer towers with high efficiency LED spotlights powered by batteries recharged with solar panels and sometimes a wind turbine-powered generator. The “heart and brains� of these solar electric systems is its solar controller. The solar controller provides proper battery charging, which will fully charge the batteries during the day while also protecting the battery, often the most expensive component, from overcharging.

By controlling the PV/solargenerated DC electricity flowing from the panels, or modules, into batteries for storage as well as sending on to run connected loads, the controller both manages the delivery and quality of the solar-produced electricity and maintains battery health. These controllers must operate in extreme high or low temperatures. Morningstar’s SunSaver, ProStar and TriStar families of solar controllers have all been used with off-grid cathodic protection systems. Higher power systems may utilize multiple TriStar or TriStar MPPT controllers in parallel to charge the battery bank. Cathod ic protection and lighting load control can include products from other manufacturers to provide constant voltage and/or constant current. These power supplies therefore can include DC-DC load control which may cause high current surges at times. Therefore, it is important to consider carefully whether Morningstar’s load control circuit can handle the type of surge capability for these loads. If the load current capability cannot meet the inrush current requirement for the load, Morningstar offers a Relay Driver to activate higher rated relays for LVD load control.

ustralian headquartered online technology company Real Time Instruments (RTI) believes that strong demand for their AllScan Online PGNAA Analyser reflects a renewed focus on quality and processing efficiency by the mining and mineral processing sector. The AllScan is a newgeneration online elemental analyser that uses PGNAA (prompt gamma neutron activation analysis) technology to accurately measure the chemical composition of most bulk materials. The analyser combines practical operational features with sophisticated hardware and software resulting in an analyser that is easy to install,

calibrate, and maintain, and above all, is extremely accurate. CEO James Asbury said that “over the last few years demand for the AllScan has escalated, particularly in the coal, iron ore, bauxite, cement and copper industries. We’ve sold, installed and commissioned analysers in many countries including Australia, Mozambique, Guinea, USA, DRC, India, Brazil, Kenya, China, and Chile.� According to the World Economic Forum (2017), more and more industries are searching for ways to use resources more responsibly through careful control and monitoring of ore grade
quality. Some initiatives focusing on optimising resource utilisation and social responsibility as a key drivers and others due to stricter ore quality requirements. Reason being, poor ore quality has a negative impact on emissions when it is converted for example iron ore into steel or coal into electricity, etc. More than 20 analysers have been purchased by the iron ore industry for a variety of quality control and processing efficiency purposes. For example, analysers have been installed on the ROM belt to monitor the iron content and overall quality of the ore direct from the mine. Others have been installed

primarily to monitor the performance of the desanding modules in filtering and removing gangue material. The majority, however, have been installed on belts feeding stockpiles to facilitate sorting and blending and to provide an accurate determination of iron content in the final product. The cement industry has also purchased many analysers recently. There are two main applications for PGNAA technology in cement production. The AllScan is used in stockpile management to improve pre-blending performance through better utilisation of quarry materials. The AllScan is typically installed on the conveyor between the crusher and the stockpile. The AllScan continuously reports the elemental composition of the material on the conveyor belt. This information is used to keep track of the pile build-up and may optionally be used to direct haul trucks to different sections of the quarry in order to best exploit the quarry. The online data from the AllScan is used to build homogenous stockpiles with a lower variation in chemistry. Another application for the AllScan in cement is to optimize the feed to the Raw Mill. The analyser is used in conjunction with raw mill quality control software and placed on the conveyor downstream of the feeders and upstream of the raw mill. Data from the AllScan is used to reduce the variability in the

raw mix product, and ultimately the kiln feed. Over 40 AllScan analysers have recently been utilised in the coal and power industries in various countries. RTI has installed the AllScan at various locations along the coal value-chain from at the mine, at the preparation plant, transhipment points, and at the end-user including coal fired power stations. Collectively, the analysers are used for various purposes including monitoring ROM coal so as to direct extraction operations, monitoring the quality of feed coal to the wash plant to allow operators to better control of washability parameters, and measuring the quality of product coal from the wash plant.
In all industries, product quality is ensured by operators responding to minute-byminute results and mine life increased by the use of more near-spec material. The risk of out of spec shipments is reduced. The AllScan analysers are maintained by a network of local agents, who are supported remotely by RTI’s engineers. A range of customed service and maintenance agreements ensure that each analyser’s performance is optimised at all times and any downtime is minimised. High Throughput Automated Detection The DETECTTM 1000 has a throughput capability of greater than 500 bags per hour while maintaining radiation safety limits (continuous operation excluding any operator review) to support operational needs. The ability to meet throughput needs while meeting radiation safety requirements is important for the safety of both the operators and passengers without additional tunnel length or increasing the spacing between parcels. The throughput combined with the low false alarm rates allows for optimum operation performance. The DETECTTM 1000 can be configured in various forms including stand alone for those sites with limited space, integrated with our automated diverter for those sites that need to automate the search station and a complete integration with an

automated tray return system for those sites without space limitations. Computed tomographybased x-ray systems provide an excellent platform to address both current and future threats. Jet Demolition continues operations safely during lockdown
Jet Demolition has the highest level of safety performance in the industry due to its ingrained company safety culture and comprehensive Integrated Safety Management Programme. This has allowed the demolition specialist to quickly and effectively put all of the necessary regulatory measures in place to protect its 200strong workforce in preparation for the construction industry opening up again under Level 3 of the national lockdown. When the construction industry effectively closed shop due to the Covid-19 crisis at the end of March, Jet Demolition saw an immediate impact on its order book. “Most of our work was affected, some projects more so than others. Some projects were halted

temporarily while Covid-19 measures were put in place,” reports Contracts Manager Kate Bester (NDip Civil Engineering). “We were midway through some other projects that were subsequently suspended. It all relates to supply and demand, as our clients were not generating revenue and hence had to drastically cut their capex and social distance as far as possible,” notes Bester. Now with construction allowed to start-up again, there will be an inevitable lag in getting projects back on track. In addition, the focus will shift to new work as opposed to demolition as contractors and other service providers seek to generate much-needed revenue.
“We are fortunate in that some of the mines are still carrying out some work, and we have been able to assist during the lockdown as we are certified as an essential services provider,” adds Bester. Despite the squeeze on cash flow, Jet Demolition has not considered branching out into other sub-sectors of the construction industry. “We specialise in complex industrial demolition and difficult urban projects, and our clients rely on us to be ready whenever they need us. Having our teams out doing work which isn’t our core speciality would compromise our availability and flexibility. We decided early on to stick with what we know best and to ride it out,” comments Bester.

This has resulted in an even closer working relationship with many of its key clients. “It has been really interesting to get on-board with our clients’ management teams to deliver these systems and procedures, which did not exist prior to the crisis,” notes Bester. “There is not a ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution to Covid-19. We have to take into account an array of diverse factors, from work proximity to workers getting in and out of machines and congregating for rest breaks. A lot of these types of very granular decisions saw us working closely with the management teams of our clients in order to come up with practical solutions,” elaborates Bester. While workshopping various scenarios for safely returning to work, lateral thinking was essential in finding practical solutions whilst ensuring the safety of the teams. In one specific instance, the site was treated as an exclusion zone with only Jet Demolition personnel permitted into the

works area. The client was kept apprised of progress via frequent video conference calls and ad-hoc virtual site walks. These are some of the new ways of working that have evolved out of necessity from dealing with the impact of the Covid-19 crisis on the construction and related industries. “Our clients are relying on us to do the correct thing. They are expecting us to follow all the necessary protocols without having direct oversight. It has been interesting and very rewarding to know that there was a level of trust required and delivered.

Not every single parameter offered can be measured in a single probe, abut as the different sensors are different sizes it is possible to measure up to 13

We have also recently added free Chlorine measurement as a calculated measurement, but only for water below a pH of 8 (above pH of 8 the accuracy decreases).
There are also no reagents required as the measurements are op�cal or Ion selec�ve, except pH, and coupled with the fact that there is an inbuilt wiping mechanism the sensors are kept clean all the �me. Quartly inspec�ons are advisable with the pH buffering at the same �me are good prac�ce. On the power side, the proteus offers op�ons including Lithium ba�ery packs (for una�ended logging) or mul�ple external power op�ons of ba�ery, mains or solar panel.
How does this new technology apply? It means that one can now �mely adjust downstream processes at a WWTW to op�mise the treatment process as one can determine the BOD loading to a plant. Combined with the BOD discharge measurement one could poten�ally backward control aera�on of the basins in place of just running them at full capacity all the �me, which means poten�al energy savings. This would be combined with the plants DO measurement as well as the detec�on level of E.coli in the discharge stream for Environment compliance and efficiency of the disinfectant regime.
As far as coms are concerned, the Proteus can easily be integrated with any Telemetry / Scada System and can also be used with exis�ng logging devices with an external RS232/Modbus/SDI12. The integrated data logger can store 1 Million readings which can be viewed through our portal on a C, Mobile phone/ tablet or at the instrument using a Bluetooth adaptor (op�onal). Skyriders makes a meal of cleaning project at foodprocessing plant Usually called upon to conduct maintenance, repair and inspection services at large-scale industrial structures such as smokestacks and petrochemical tanks, rope access specialist Skyriders recently completed an unusual project at a major food-processing plant. “Our scope of work was to carry out general routine cleaning in inaccessible areas,” Skyriders Marketing Manager Mike Zinn explains. A six-person team carried out the fast-track project over a two-day period, deploying high-pressure washers using food-safe detergent in order to adhere to the strict hygiene and health and safety standards of the food and beverage industry. The food-processing plant was offline during the cleaning operation, which increased the pressure to complete the project in as short a time as possible so as to minimise downtime. Zinn comments that Skyriders has its particular methodology for this client down to a fine art, as it has now completed about four projects at the same plant, each on a different line or section. “The food-and-beverage industry is an important growth area for Skyriders. Our success with this particular client to date, a leader in its market, is largely due to the fact how we have aligned ourselves both with its expectations and the stringent requirements of the industry itself,” Zinn adds. Previous projects at the foodprocessing plant have focused on replacing hoses and gas lines, which are suspended from hangers. Here rope access was the fastest and most cost-effective solution, as opposed to traditional scaffolding, which is difficult to erect in a factory environment constrained by conveyors and other structures. “Working with this major client has been quite unique for us, and it has gone a long way to showcase our versatility and adaptability.
