This volume would not be possible without the generous support by the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic, the Region of Olomouc, and the Statutory City of Olomouc. Special thanks are due to the Archbishop of Olomouc, Mons. Jan Graubner, for his permission to reproduce the collection items owned by the Olomouc Archbishopric and for making them available for this exhibition.
I am fortunate in having been able to spend my late university years in Olomouc. In a beautiful ancient town full of historical monuments, a town with a rich cultural and social life. Part of my study was aending art exhibitions. When time and duties allowed it, I also enriched myself by visits in the Olomouc Museum of Art. Thus for the whole five years I witnessed, with increasing wonder, its activity – and I know I am not alone in this. The Museum staff residing in their vast building in the middle of the historical town every year opened new exhibition halls, with exhibitions surpassing in interest one another. I admired their range, the emphasis on high quality, as well as the exemplary installation and the care paid to visitors in each age category. With equal pleasure I attended from time to time the Lecture Hall, where interesting lectures on themes of culture and select chamber music concerts were given. I said to myself they won’t be able to do any beer. And still… When many years later I revisited Olomouc in order to see the newly opened Archdiocesan Museum, I could not help admiring again the grand scale, the tenacity, and the good taste with which they managed to reconstruct one part of the Přemyslid Castle in Olomouc for the display of a selection of their collections of old art. This art emerged from a long oblivion in order to delight the Museum visitors by its beauty as well as by the realization of the ancient character and spiritual wealth of what was the centre of Moravia in those days. And last but not least it was a reminder of the fact that Europe has its roots in Antiquity and in Christianity. I need to add that from my town of Vizovice it is not far to Kroměříž, where one year later a second Archdiocesan Museum was opened in the Chateau, again wide-ranging in visual arts, music, books, and garden art. I believe – and it is my firm belief – that the staff of the Olomouc Museum have done so much for Czech culture over the two decades since 1989 that it can be hardly rivalled in the Czech lands. With equal enthusiasm as in the preceding cases they have been developing for years the project of the Central European Forum and its bold stepping outside, “into the world”. I would like to thank the Olomouc Museum staff, on behalf of the entire Ministry of Culture and all art-loving citizens in this country, and tell them how proud we are of their work and that we congratulate them sincerely on their respectable jubilee of sixty years.
The Museum of Art, this year celebrating the 60th anniversary of its foundation, has for some time been also our museum. By that I do not mean its predecessors, the founders of the valuable collections now administered and exhibited by the Museum, or the church dignitaries taking part in the foundation of the museum in Olomouc, whose part the Gallery formerly was before it became independent. I am referring to the foundation of the Archdiocean Museum Olomouc and the Archdiocean Museum Kroměříž, which for several years have been part of the Museum of Art. I am thinking of the splendid cooperation which provides professional care to the collections, gives enjoyment to the collaborators, and brings benefit to the general public, which now can see the many art treasures previously hidden away from it. The precious collections contain not only rare evidence of the thoughts, tastes and life in various epochs, the ways of viewing things, and artistic expression of many masters but they are also extraordinary tools for cultivation of arts in the present generation. It will help people discover that real art is not a mere expression of one’s own emotions but is a truly creative activity inspired by the Holy Spirit. The noble beauty, the harmony of contrasts, and the play of lights and shadows, the humble receding into the background to make the other stand out, the strength of life, the power of life and the pellucidity of pure innocence, the persistent faithfulness or fearless courage emerge from many works of art and offer themselves both for admiration and for their introduction into the life of the contemporary people. They give inspiration for new art and a new culture of life. While hatred and unrestrained passions warn of destruction, poverty arouses compassion and leads to help. I am grateful that the Museum is not content with exhibition activities but endeavours to teach people to read and understand art, to develop a relationship with it, and then make them, with their own life, continue in its creation under the influence of the best. May the Olomouc Museum of Art for many more years bring blessed fruit by its share in the raising of the culture of life in future generations.

Dear Friends, in your hands is a book documenting the jubilee sixty years of Olomouc Museum of Art in a wider context. Besides valuable information on the history of the Museum and presentation of a selection from its collections it will guide you through the history of collecting and exhibiting art in the Olomouc region from the 16th century to the present days. You will be told about the origin of the Museum and the development of its activities and about its orientation throughout the centuries and thus you will get a beer idea of how deep the roots are of the importance of culture and fine arts in the Olomouc region. I am very happy and proud that there is an institution with such a rich and varied past as the Olomouc Museum of Art – the more so that its collections, exhibitions and educational activities continue determining the trends in cultural events in our region. The Olomouc Museum of Art and the Archdiocesan Museum are traditionally among the most frequent targets of visitors arriving from other regions of the Czech Republic and from abroad. On this occasion may I wish the Museum that the contemporary period also enters its history with the visitors’ interest, expansion of the Museum’s collections and exhibitions, and participation in education and experience of the next generation. It is my belief this book will contribute to it, too.
Ladies and gentlemen, friends of the Olomouc Museum of Art, allow me to greet you in this form. Sixty years – that is the age when people mostly retire and balance their life. The Olomouc Museum of Art is sixty too and it balances its achievements. It definitely is not going to retire, however, and personally I am glad about it. I am happy to have in our town an institution which in its category is among the most notable in the Czech Republic, both in the number of its collection items and in its professional range and the exhibition programme. I highly appreciate the work of the staff of the Museum of Art, headed by Professor Pavel Zatloukal, and I wish for them, over the next sixty years, many pleased visitors.

About the Museum of Art, about collecting and exhibiting fine art in the Olomouc region Pavel Zatloukal
Olomouc Museum of Art was founded sixty years ago. Still it cannot be said to have originated through a single, unambiguous act. Its development was gradual with many peripeteias. This holds in particular for its very substance, the state-owned, ecclesiastic and private collections of which it takes care now. Their origin, their local concentration but also dispersion, go back into a rather distant past. Let me remind you briefly of its story. The royal town of Olomouc lost, due to the Thirty Years’ War, the status of the capital of Moravia but as the seat of the Moravian bishopric and of the university it remained a spiritual center of the country. Its visual culture developed over the next centuries in two

parallel streams. The first one was associated with the bishopric and ecclesiastic institutions, the other one was the product of the town dwellers. Although the beginnings of collecting art in Olomouc may be traced back to the early 16th century, the time when a major centre of Transalpine Renaissance and humanism arose here, the real foundations of collecting are only linked with the episcopate of Karl von Lichtenstein-Castelkorno (1624/1664–1695). The goals of the Bishop’s grand programme were conclusion of the country’s return to the Catholic faith and material reconstruction of the country ravished by the long war, as well as the “resurrection of art”. His activities were both versatile and well thought-out. He launched

In the interwar years, too, art exhibiting in Olomouc was mostly in the hands of art societies. Klub přátel umění (The Club of Friends of Art) and later also the Skupina olomouckých výtvarníků (Group of Olomouc Artists) brought together Czech artists. The local Germans and Jews continued holding their exhibitions 18—19
under the Gesellscha der Kunstfreunde in Olmütz and the newly founded branch of the national association Metznerbund – naturally only up to the occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1939. The tragedy of the holocaust affected the collecting in Olomouc, and several major art collections of European art disappeared from the town. Aer the Second World War, the museums in Olomouc underwent significant changes. As early as 1924, the three Olomouc museums were merged into a single Museum hlavního města Olomouce (Museum of the Capital City of Olomouc). The sphere of competence of the new (since 1951 Vlastivědné muzeum Olomouc – Regional Museum Olomouc) was the whole region, and within its framework Galerie výtvarného umění (Gallery of Art) was founded in Olomouc. Its collections increased during the whole first half of the 1950s, being made up from collections of the Museum of the Capital City of Olomouc, from works confiscated from the Germans expelled from Olomouc, from some nationalized ecclesiastic property, and from the collections of art societies in Olomouc – The Club of Friends of Art and the Group of Olomouc Artists. The first exhibitions and permanent exhibitions took place in the Regional Museum, but the gallery soon acquired the building of the House of Art and many years later the small Kabinet grafiky (Cabinet of Graphic Art). In 1954 the first permanent exhibition of Czech visual art of the 20th century was opened and in later years was several times reorganized. It was complemented by a permanent exhibition of 19th century painting at the nearby chateau Náměšť na Hané.
