LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Welcome to the 107th Annual Meeting of the Mt. Washington Valley Chamber of Commerce! As you know, this organization is a vital part of our community and supports many aspects of our growth, prosperity and quality of life. Your membership in the Chamber is what makes our work possible. We all benefit from numerous opportunities to connect with peers, learn about issues facing our communities, attend events, and have the chance to exchange ideas in a positive, supportive environment. Enormous gratitude is owed to our many enduring sponsors, such as Eastern Propane and Oil, Chalmers Insurance Group, Mount Washington Radio Group, Settlers Green, The Valley Originals, Memorial Hospital Maine Health, TD Bank, The Conway Daily Sun and Eversource. Thank you to each of these organizations and any of their representatives here tonight. And, thank you to this evening’s sponsors, listed on page 17, as well as all our other sponsors, members and advertisers. The Chamber is always positioning North Conway and the wider Mt. Washington Valley as the premier destination for families, couples and individuals in pursuit of activities that range from pure relaxation to outdoor recreation to extreme sports. That’s why we’ve been ranked a top US ski and adventure town by well-known publications over the past few years! At tonight’s event, you will receive a review of the organization’s finances and governance, marketing and PR for the past year, and you will be introduced to the winners of the 2019 Business Awards which include the White Mountains Treasure Awards, Entrepreneur of the Year Award, Employer of the Year Award, and the Steve Eastman Community Spirit Award. But I also want to ask everyone to take another look at the Chamber’s full body of work. From the widely known Leadership Program to the Business Expo to the After Hours Series to our support of dozens of local non-profit organizations. This work coupled with advocacy, working with local, state and national representatives, helping local community projects and non-profits, such as the planned Recreation Path, White Mountains Pride and other civic activities, as well as other general economic development support. You will be surprised at the volume of work the Chamber accomplishes! Thank you to the professional Chamber staff who have worked on tonight’s event – as well as all the other events, activities and programs. Without Janice, Lisa, Paula, Rebecca, Christine, and Michelle we could not accomplish what we do each year. Combine the dynamism of our staff with the tireless efforts of our volunteers – including the Board of Directors – and we have a great team! Thank you to everyone who participates! This is my first Annual Meeting as President of the Board. There are numerous opportunities for us in the coming year and I look forward to continuing to work and play alongside the many hard-working and kind people who live in the Mt. Washington Valley. I hope you enjoy the evening. Warmly,
Christopher Bellis President, Mt. Washington Valley Chamber of Commerce

ANNUAL PUBLIC RELATIONS PROGRAM The chamber’s PR program celebrated yet another successful year with fabulous local, regional, national and even international coverage. Thank you to all the lodging, dining, attractions, retail and service members for hosting media who in turn provide stories to increase awareness about the hosting business and the Mt Washington Valley destination. Success indicators include:
With the demise of print and trend toward online/ electronic/video preferences for travelers, Mt Washington Valley Chamber of Commerce is able to reach more people with more impressions than ever before. August 2018 through August 2019
We enjoyed coverage from an increasing number of bloggers visiting Mt Washington Valley. MWVCC hosted more than 25 journalists and bloggers who created stories after experiencing the Valley during all seasons. The winter marketing and meteorologist program resulted in extensive coverage from meteorologists plus skier outreach with a consistent snow message.
Forty-nine press releases were created and distributed between August 2018 and August 2019.
The Chamber PR program combined with mentions of MWVCC members throughout the media (radio, television, newspaper, online, blogs) resulted in 2,972, 890,137 (2.973 TRILLION IMPRESSIONS) with a value of $188,499,115.12
Our media reach was expanded through the use of Maynely Marketing’s license with Meltwater, a media database. This allowed for better identification of coverage, precise circulation, and AVE (Advertising Value Equivalency).
Mentions of Mt Washington Valley appeared often in regional outlets like Union Leader, NewEngland.com, NH.com, New Hampshire Magazine, Boston Globe, Boston.com, NH Public Radio, Boston Magazine, NH Chronicle, Boston Chronicle, 207 and more.
We have hosted more than 430 journalists over the course of the PR Program, and continue to actively recruit journalists to research and write stories for print, Internet and broadcast. Over the past year, we have hosted another 20 travel, TV and consumer media plus a number of travel and mommy bloggers. All aspects of their travel itineraries are coordinated through the PR Program.
While the number of impressions did not increase from last year the value of those impressions rose by more than $3 million.
In addition, Mt Washington Valley enjoyed a great deal of national media exposure in publications like Forbes.com, MSN.com, USA Today/USAToday.com, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Washington Post, Good Housekeeping, Fox News, Buzzfeed.com, US News & World Report, Outside Magazine and OutsideOnline.com, and many more. Mt Washington Valley coverage extended beyond the United States with articles in Canada including the Montreal Gazette, Toronto Sun, Toronto Star, Edmonton Sun, and overseas in publications like the London Free Press, BBC and more.
MWV Chamber of Commerce works closely with DTTD to respond to media requests and to help host media and travel professionals from around the world.
Kudos received this past year! White Mountains were named among the best places to see foliage in September by ThisInsider.com. North Conway included in the list of Most Majestic Mountain towns on MSN.com Buzzfeed named White Mountains among the most spectacular places to visit during fall. North Conway named among the top ten small towns for adventure by USA Today/10Best Readers’ Awards. For the full list visit http://bit.ly/MWVaccolades

STEVE EASTMAN COMMUNITY SPIRIT AWARD BOB AND SHARON SEAMAN Residents of North Conway only since 2011, active volunteers Bob and Sharon Seaman are such a part of the social fabric of the community that you would think they have been here forever. That quality of giving back makes them ideal selections as recipients of this year’s Steve Eastman Community Service Award, named in honor of late Mountain Ear co-founder and publisher Steve Eastman (1949-2008).
The award is given out annually by the Eastman family (Steve’s wife, local artist Sarah W. Eastman and his brother, Tom Eastman of the Conway Daily Sun). Criteria includes people who best exemplify Eastman’s mantra, as now expressed at a memorial rock in his honor at the top of North Conway’s Steve Eastman Memorial Field at Mud Bowl’s Hog Coliseum: “Love everyone, hold no grudges, and do good deeds.”
The Seamans have lived up to that creed all of their married life. Shortly after moving here Bob and Sharon joined the First Church of Christ Congregational quickly becoming active members and getting involved with the Vaughan Community Service’s Food Pantry, along with a team of dedicated volunteers. They almost single handedly, along with the help of their daughter Kristen, and David Shedd, both local residents, set up the temporary rented space for the Vaughan Food Pantry. Bob serves on the Vaughan Board of Directors, serving as chairman of the Building Committee. The board is currently focused on a $1.4 million capital campaign to build a new food pantry and clothing depot on the campus of the First Church of Christ Congregational property. Site work began in August and fundraising continues. Bob also serves on the board of the Mountain Washington Valley Housing Coalition. Having survived a battle with breast cancer last year, Sharon says she is grateful for every day and attempts to make every day count. She actively raises funds for Jen’s Friends Cancer Foundation Hill Climb every year. Both she and Bob have participated in the Climb almost every year since they moved to the MWV.

Without them we would not have the very important social services, business support, and entrepreneurism that make our valley so special.
We appreciate Memorial Hospital Maine Health’s enthusiastic sponsorship of this award and the dedication of the selection committee: Paul Durfee, Chair, Jac Cuddy, Tom Eastman, Cindy Russell, Bayard Kennett, Linda Walker and Joan Lanoie.
JOE BERRY Joe Berry of Attitash Mountain Service Co. LLC is recognized for his 40-year contribution to the Mt Washington Valley. In the late 1970s Joe was the first to build a hotel condominium in the state and was integral to the drafting of the NH state condominium laws. Joe employs over 100 people in the community and has also employed hundreds of local contractors and businesses over the years. From the very beginning Joe has focused on the revitalization of the community, and giving to organizations that help the community. Joe’s contributions have jump started many projects and sustained them through the years but his greatest gifts have been the countless thousands of hours he has served on boards and committees. Joe is a person who does all of these things because he believes it is the right thing to do. And, that doing the right thing is its own reward.
STEVE COTE Steven (Steve) P. Cote, President of Chalmers Insurance Group is recognized for more than 25 years of valuable service to both Chalmers Insurance Group and the Mt Washington Valley community. Steve is passionate about giving back to our community. His most notable donations of time have been serving as a youth basketball coach for many years, earning his USA Basketball Gold License in 2017. From basketball coach to Fryeburg Academny Trustee, Steve has also served as past-president of Conway Area Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis Club of Mt Washington Valley and the MWV Economic Council, Steve has offered thousands of hours and leadership to many non-profit organizations throughout Mt Washington Valley.

EMPLOYER OF THE YEAR Conway Parks & Recreation Department
ENTREPRENEUR OF THE YEAR Ben Williams , Black Cap Grille and Barley & Salt Kitchen and Tap House
John Eastman has served as director of Conway Parks & Recreation for almost 29 years and in that time has formed great relationships with people both inside and outside of the Rec. John is known as a walking encyclopedia of knowledge when it comes to the town of Conway and he loves to share his knowledge with anyone who will listen. “When you have a boss like Johnny Eastman who has invested so much time and effort into his work, it makes you want to work harder to help his job go smoother, said Lynore Wagner, his nominator for the award. John and Conway Parks & Recreation are recognized for the creation of an inspiring, team-oriented and welcoming work environment.
Ben Williams has been making dining magic for over 40 years. His original restaurant, Horsefeathers, was the first of its kind in North Conway, winning awards and setting new standards in casual dining until it was sold in early 2000. In 2008 Ben partnered with OVP Management in the development of Black Cap Grille, a dining concept unlike anything else in the Valley. Ten years later it is one of the most popular spots in the region. In 2016 he once again worked with OVP Management on another concept with a world menu of small plates and hearty entrees and one of the largest and most unique offerings of draft beer anywhere. Three distinct restaurant concepts that have reshaped what dining is about in our region. Ben is creative, driven and one of the kindest and most likable people in the Valley. He continues to partner on new ideas, most recently becoming the food and beverage caterer for the new REI store opening next door to Black Cap Grille.
