MT. WASHINGTON VALLEY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
Letter From the Board President
October 29, 2015 Dear Chamber and Community Members, The Mt. Washington Valley Chamber continues to thrive with over 800 members and to serve as the primary advocate, voice and resource for business organizations in the Valley. This past year, the Board and staff have continued their work on the Strategic Plan with a focus on community and collaboration. We have been hard at work implementing programs, overseeing events and using our resources to encourage, support, and foster economic growth in the Valley. These efforts include:
• Creation of a working group of key area business leaders to focus on recruiting and retaining a skilled workforce. • Participation in the Conway School District’s Strategic Planning Committee. • Assistance in the planning and overseeing of Conway’s 250th celebration. • Service on the MWV Regional Collaboration’s Steering Committee. • Implementation of an aggressive marketing plan which includes paid advertising to target weekend and midweek stays for winter sports enthusiasts on Boston TV Channels 5 and 7. • Continued Search Engine Optimization efforts and Website Development. • Collaboration with White Mountains Attractions, Lakes Region Association and northern Chambers in attendance at key Travel Shows. • Marketing initiatives to build the late Spring/Early Summer shoulder.
None of our successes are possible without our entire community - our Board of Directors, our staff, our volunteers, our members, and our community at large. Thank you! A special thank you goes to Janice Crawford whose vision and leadership continues to drive the stability and growth of the chamber and our valley. We thank our sponsors of tonight’s event: Eastern Propane, TD Bank, Northeast Delta Dental, Eversource, Fairpoint Communications, Lakes Region Coca-Cola, Ragged Mountain Equipment and Ruthie’s Flowers. We also thank Memorial Hospital Maine Health for their sponsorship of the 2015 White Mountains Treasure Awards. It is with great pleasure that I offer a hearty congratulations on behalf of the Mt Washington Valley Chamber of Commerce to this year’s recipients Phyllis Sherman and Audrey Vorperian. When we work together Anything is Possible!
Sincerely,
Michelle H. Capozzoli, Ph.D. President, Board of Directors Mt. Washington Valley Chamber of Commerce

She also outlined marketing initiatives touched on in the President’s letter on page 12. Janice reported that the Chamber continues to work well with the Mt. Washington Valley Economic Council who provides related but different roles in supporting business in the Valley. The Council draws business in and provides business loans and education; the Chamber helps market business members and promotes tourism which benefits all. Both entities also jointly sponsor the Leadership MWV Program which mentors young adults in leadership and provides opportunities for them to serve on Boards. Both groups also worked year-long with the Mt. Washington Valley Housing Authority and Board of Realtors as part of the Mt. Washington Valley Collaborative effort to create a regional shared vision. Other collaborative projects have included support of Eastern Slope Airport Authority and MWV Bike Path. The Executive Director is also collaborating with schools, serving as a facilitator for Conway School District’s Strategic Plan and is the Chamber’s representative for partnership projects with North Country Chambers. Michelle Capozzoli moved to adjourn the meeting. Jackie Goodhart seconded. The meeting was adjourned. Respectfully Submitted, Melody Nester

2015 White Mountains Treasure Awards The Mt. Washington Valley Chamber of Commerce is very pleased to honor these individuals for the tremendous contributions they have made to the Mt. Washington Valley. These individuals have demonstrated outstanding and consistent caring for the improvement of the Valley and the quality of life for the residents of our many communities without the expectation of reward or commendation. Without them we would not have the very important social services, business support, and entrepreneurism that have gone into making our valley a quality place to live, raise a family and work. We appreciate Memorial Hospital Maine Health’s enthusiastic sponsorship of this award. It is with great pleasure that the Board of Directors of the Mt Washington Valley Chamber of Commerce, staff and volunteers offer congratulations to this year’s recipients of the White Mountains Treasure Award
Phyllis Sherman and Audrey Vorperian Phyllis Sherman
of Sherman Farms in East Conway, NH has been an active community member in East Conway, Conway and Fryeburg, ME. She was a dedicated participant in her children’s Conway School activities and is still involved in activities at John Fuller Elementary School for her grandchildren. Phyllis has served on numerous boards including the Town of Conway Zoning Board of Adjustment, Current Use Board, New Hampshire Advisory Board of New Hampshire Agriculture, Carroll County UNH Extension Advisory Board and the 4H Club. Innovation is much the Sherman’s way since 1964, from collaboration with neighbor farms, sharing of equipment and labor, to the adoption of new technologies before being widely used. Although retired in name only, Phyllis is busy with family and hobbies while delivering meals on wheels for the Gibson Center to her friends and neighbors.
Audrey Vorperian
and her husband Zaven moved to the Valley in 1964 to be Directors of Carroll County YMCA Camp Nellie Huckins in Freedom. The all-girls camp flourished under their leadership, guidance and encouragement for 25 years while they raised their family in North Conway. Audrey instituted a scholarship program at Camp Huckins for all Carroll County girls ensuring that any and all could attend camp if they desired no matter their financial situation. Approximately 30 percent of the girls received a full scholarship. When any school called and said a local girl needed some time away from home at camp Audrey made it happen somehow. In the Camp Huckins off-season, Audrey volunteered at John Fuller Elementary School as a teacher’s aide for over 20 years. Although Audrey is 86 years young she has been a volunteer for the Eastern Slope Ski Club for over 50 years and is the longest serving member. She is also a long time member of the Pequawket Foundation and an active member of the Connie Watson Davis Committee.
