A horseshoe pattern of blocks on the front tyre reduces the stiffness in the center to offer a greater ride. The unique pattern also grabs the dirt to provide better braking grip.

BRETT METCALFE P E N R I T E H O N DA R A C I N G T E A M

Brett Metcalfe’s amazing career has been shadowed by the success of two other Australians - Chad Reed and Casey Stoner. In spite of that he has pursued his goals and chased his dreams by competing all over the world in a successful career that has spanned two decades.

The Australian Supercross Championship crew sat down to find out what drives Brett Metcalfe.

18

19

Your professional career spans two decades and you have been riding a dirt bike for 32 years and it doesn’t look like you are willing to slow down any time soon. What is driving you right now?

It’s the connection to the sport and competition. It’s realizing this opportunity I have as a professional racer, doing something I loved doing as a kid. Riding motorbikes was a fun adventure as a youngster. Like other sports, as you grow older it teaches life qualities. Winning was the goal, becoming professional was the bi-product of that. I’m not yet willing to slow down.

I’ve really connected with these things this past year. I’m more driven now than in a long time, this super cross championship is a perfect playground to chase my goals.

20

Image: Penrite Honda Racing Team

21

Image: Marc Jones - Foremost Media

You finished 2nd to your teammate last year, arguably you were the first Australian. Were you happy with your result?

I was happy but it’s still bitter getting that close and falling short. Winning the round in Adelaide in front of my hometown crowd was the highlight. Entering the championship I thought i could be a possible contender to win. After the first round, I believed I could win and I did. Yes, I came up short in the final championship standings in 2nd, but it still felt good to be in the fight. Brayton is a great supercross rider and we respect each other. But this year, once that gate drops, it will be on.

22

23

When you finish second in America “twice and beat some of the biggest names in the sport and your phone doesn’t ring how did it make you feel?

I focused on the positives instead of letting frustration settle in. I had great career overseas and achieved things I am proud of. At that time I just became a new father with our first born Nash and there was Maverick a couple years after. I took time to embrace that but also felt the responsibility to provide for my family. So I did what I felt was the best option available and competed in Canada for multiple years. After a short while, my desires to return to my homeland were strong and we relocated back to Aus. It was the best decision for me and my family.

Coming Home.

After a successful international career where he claimed wins in the 450 American Motocross Championship and podium finishes in the 250 AMA Supercross Championships he returned to race full time in Australia in 2017. It has been a trying return but it hasn’t derailed his hunger to win.

27

Image: Penrite Honda Racing Team

Brett you ride for the Penrite Factory Honda Team and your return to Australia has been anything but easy?

It hasn’t been easy at all. The first team i rode for folded part way through the championship, the next team i joined closed its doors following the end of that same season. It was challenging times to find the right fit. In 2018, i joined Penrite Honda and we are now going into our second season together. I’ve found a great home with this team and Yarrive Konsky has supported me every step of the way. The whole team is in it together.

28

29

You have left round 1 of the 2019 Championship in 4th, are you happy with that?

A top 5 is ok if you want to be a top 3 guy at the end of the championship. I’m trying to win this thing, so a 4th is hurting me a little. I had good speed and took and 2nd in heat 1 and 2nd in main event #1, unfortunate i went down in main #2 which affected my overall. I felt solid as a second place guy for the night but that’s racing. I need to be better to win. The Penrite Honda team have made changes to my settings and i’ll be ready come round 2.
