ROBBIE MADDISON F R E E S T Y L E M OTO C R O S S L E G E N D

Maddo, it has to feel good being back in Australia, how’s everything going? Yeh, I’m stoked to be back! Things are good though, family is good and I’ve been super busy, constantly finding new ways to use my dirt bike as a tool to be my job. Most recently I played the Burger King in a new commercial in the USA which was cool. My body has had a really rough time over the last fifteen years or so with injuries so it’s for sure letting me know about it now, I’m definitely due for a stop in the maintenance shop soon haha, I have some surgeries scheduled for later in the year. But for now, I have enough tricks up my sleeve to get out and ride with the boys this weekend at Wollongong and put on a good show for the crowd, I’m looking forward to it.

22

23

It looks like you have been doing a lot more riding than in previous years, how has that been being able to spend more time riding FMX and Motocross? It’s been really good, I took some time off last year as we unfortunately had a death in the family that rocked us all and we needed some time away. To get back on the bike has been awesome though. I had back surgery years ago and sometimes it holds me back, but riding with all the boys recently has been getting me pumped up to ride like we used to. I need to get my shoulder fixed later in the year so I can get back to riding at the level I know I’m capable of. But for now, I’m excited to have fun here at Wollongong, hit the ramps and throw some dirty whips with the boys and I might even ride the Recover8 Speed and style if they can get me into it that will be fun.

So what else do you have going on here at Wollongong for the Motorcycle Expo and Supercross? Well for the Motorcycle Expo we are doing something I’ve never done before. We have the water bike here and I’ll be riding with Troy Bayliss of TBE (Troy Bayliss Events) who is promoting these events on the bike with me! We are riding at 12pm Saturday and Sunday in the Wollongong Harbour and you are going to want to see this. With two riders on the bike, I’m thinking if we get enough run up and keep up speed we should be good. I for sure can’t go as slow as when I’m riding solo. Riding a bike on the water is such an amazing experience, everyone needs to experience it. So along with the FMX, Speed and Style and Autograph sessions where I can hang out with the Aussie fans again, I have a pretty busy schedule this weekend.

24

25

Image: RacerX

Talk a little about the Recover8 speed and style event this weekend? I didn’t want to bite off more than I can chew this weekend and I’m still not sure if I’ll enter, but I had a hand in developing the concept of Speed and Style back in the day with the Red Bull X Ray event we used to do at Picton NSW. The hardest thing with Freestyle Motocross is the fastest rider doesn’t always have the biggest tricks and cross the line first, so it’s tough to give the tricks a value vs. speed, but regardless it’s super entertaining and the winner will stand out. Troy Bayliss Events do a great job, they have the sports best interests in mind and this stop of the Australian Supercross series will stand out between the racing, Motorcylce expo and everything else going on.

Thanks for your time Maddo, enjoy the weekend. Thanks guys, I can’t wait to put on a show for the Aussie crowd!

AARON TANTI S E R C O YA M A H A

Thanks for taking the time to talk with us. How does it feel being the SX2 red plate holder heading into round 3? No worries, and thank you! It’s a great feeling especially coming into Wollongong as it’s basically my hometown race. A lot of my Friends and Family will be there, I’ve spent most of my life living in Sydney so it’s going to be great to race in front of the home town crowd.

28

29

You have always been known as a good Supercross rider, however this year you have really stepped up. What has been the difference for you in 2019? As a lot of people know, last year was my first season racing full time after I finally got a paid ride and could finish up working. I learnt so much last season, I was fast and even ended with a podium in Supercross. This year I’ve been trying to work on consistency more, eliminating mistakes and not crashing. Last year, I was always fast and would run up front, but the crashes cost me. I’ve been putting in the time this year with Supercross and I felt good coming in, it’s awesome to have landed on the podium but it’s also not a surprise to me.

Where have you been preparing for the 2019 Supercross season? I’ve based myself up in QLD this season to be near the team. I’ve been riding with Jesse Dobson and Kaleb Barham and also we have the Yamaha track so I’ve been riding there a lot with Jacob Hayes now that he is here from the USA. Working with the Serco team has been great, they have such a good structure and bike, and they have a solid history winning many championships so I’m really enjoying working with those guys.

30

Image: Aaryn Minerds

31

Image: Marc Jones - Foremost Media

Talk about the series so far, how has it been for you? I’ve really enjoyed the tracks and the series so far. Last round at Adelaide, the track was technical and the big rhythms if you could do them, they separated everyone. The whoops were gnarly and broke down and I had a big crash in practice, so I was playing it a little safe during the final as there were crashes everywhere it seemed like. My aim was to be consistent and it worked, landing on the podium again. I saw Wilson Todd’s crash and that was gnarly. We are in the zone when we are racing but it’s never fun to see your friends get hurt, but I was doing my thing and kept my goals in mind of getting through the fifteen laps.

How do you feel about the USA riders in SX2 this year?

I think it’s great, some people think it’s not fair but for me it pushes us to lift our game in Australia, and if we are beating American riders that place in AMA Supercross, well we can look to them as a gauge of where we are at on the international scene.

Thanks for your time Aaron, no pressure heading into the home town race but we are hoping to see that fairytale win in front of the NSW crowd. Thanks guys, let’s hope it go’s that way!

32

33

JOSH OSBY RACELINE KTM

Josh, thanks for talking with us. No worries guys, thanks for having me!

How’s things going up in QLD where you have based yourself this season? Man it’s been great, the sunshine is always nice and we have been getting some solid riding in with the Latimer brothers and Justin Brayton, it’s been good. I’m actually just packing my bags now and about to be on my way to Wollongong.

34

35

You mentioned you have been riding with Justin Brayton who is the 3 x Australian SX1 champion coming into 2019. How influential has he been on your program? Justin has been a huge influence on my program. As everyone knows, Justin is one of the most composed guys on the starting line and in everyday life so I try to follow in his footsteps the best I can. He’s very mature and older than I, having kids and a family is something I’m a little ways off yet haha but I’ve been trying to latch onto him and learn from him best I can, I enjoy being around him and his family.

This is your second season coming to Australia, you also raced in Canada and the USA last year so you have been busy? I’m 23 now so I’m still relatively young for the sport, so I see what Justin is doing at 36 years old and there’s a long career ahead of me if I can do it the right way and with the way the sport is going Supercross is a big part of it, so I’d like to be able to come back here and race AMA Supercross for years to come. Working with the Raceline KTM Thor team is awesome I’ve found a good home here, I lived with them at the race shop last year so we grew very close and it was an easy choice to come back here and race in 2019. It was an easy transition getting back on the KTM, Raceline has a great bike set up and it worked out awesome. I’ve been having a good time over here this year and I think that has shown on the track.

Thanks for your time Josh, good luck at round 3! Thanks guys, appreciate it.

SX1 DEFENDING SX1 CHAMPION BRAYTON SOARS TO PORT ADELAIDE WIN Triple Australian supercross champion Justin Brayton delivered another commanding ride for Penrite Honda Racing to win the SX1 main event at Port Adelaide tonight. Brayton worked his way into the lead on the opening lap and sprinted ahead from there in what was the only traditional format final of the 2019 season. In the end the American lit the candles with a 9.757s advantage from Luke Clout (CDR Yamaha Monster Energy), who managed to turn the tables on teammate Dan Reardon in South Australia. Local Brett Metcalfe (Penrite Honda Racing) rode to fourth position. SX1 newcomer Richie Evans (Yamalube Yamaha Racing) showed he belongs in the class by recording fifth place, ahead of Honda-mounted privateer Joel Wightman in a solid P6.

47

R2

Next best was Jesse Dobson (Husqvarna), while national champion Todd Waters (DPH Motorsport Husqvarna) made a late move on Jackson Richardson (Rockstar Energy Honda), as Dylan Long (Empire Kawasaki) completed the top 10. In the championship standings following two of five rounds, Brayton now leads by eight points over Clout and Reardon, with the series set to continue at Wollongong’s WIN Stadium in New South Wales on Saturday, 9 November.

SX2 OLDENBURG RISES FOR FIRST SX2 VICTORY IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA Penrite Honda Racing’s Mitchell Oldenburg has won round two of the 2019 Australian Supercross Championship in SX2, delivering a dominant performance at Port Adelaide in South Australia. Oldenburg scored his first win on Australian soil by a commanding 6.555s over fellow American import Josh Osby (Raceline KTM Thor). Fast-finishing Aaron Tanti (Serco Yamaha) almost made it consecutive runner-up results, however an error on the final lap allowed Osby back through for position. Defending champion Jay Wilson (Yamalube Yamaha Racing) and Chris Blose (Penrite Honda Racing) filled the top five. Supercross rookie Regan Duffy (Raceline KTM Thor) impressed with sixth place, followed by lead privateer Connor Tierney (Yamaha), Tomas Ravenhorst (KTM), Bradley Taft (Empire Kawasaki) and Dylan Wills (Davey Motorsports KTM).

51

R2

Major news in the SX2 main was the exit of early leader Wilson Todd (DPH Motorsport Husqvarna) and opening round winner Jacob Hayes (Serco Yamaha) – separately going down in the same rhythm lane on lap three. As a result, it’s now Tanti who leads the championship following two of five rounds, two points ahead of Osby and a further two ahead of tonight’s winner Oldenburg. Previous leader Hayes has now dropped down the order to seventh.

YZ450F BIKE REVIEW WRITTEN BY JOE STEVENS

59

CDR Yamaha Monster Energy have earned a reputation in both the domestic and international pits of having one of the best YZ450f bike set ups in the world. With Championship winning stats like Jay Marmonts 4 x MX Nationals MX1 championships from 2008 to 2011 and most recently Dean Ferris’ 3 x MX Nationals MX1 Championship from 2016 to 2018, it is clear to see that Craig Dack and the CDR organisation have been able to get the very best out of multiple generations of the Yamaha YZ450f. So what makes this race bike of CDR Yamaha Monster Energy so special? In what might come as a surprise to many, the CDR race bikes are a lot closer to the stock form of a 2020 YZ450f that would roll off your local dealership floor than you might expect. Sure, there are some trick parts, but the CDR bikes do not feature too many of the exclusive factory race parts that public perception might have you believe are all over the pits when it comes to race bikes at this level of racing. The reason for this? Yamaha have such a strong performing 2020 YZ450f, meaning that Craig Dack and the CDR team of engineers and mechanics can make small refinements with key components to maximise bike and rider performance on race day. LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT SOME OF THE KEY PARTS ON THE 2020 CDR YAMAHA MONSTER ENERGY YZ450F...

60

61 Image: Jonni Row - JSR Media

GYTR Genuine Yamaha Factory Racing Parts The CDR Yamaha Monster Energy team choose to run many parts from the GYTR range of performance parts that Yamaha sells direct to the public. - Front Rotor 280mm - Braided Frontbrake Line - Engine Covers - Clutch Assembly Hardware

- Engine Components - Chainblocks - Holeshot Device

Suspension KYB Factory CDR Yamaha Monster Energy work directly with the KYB Supension factory and run exclusive factory internal settings and components. As we mentioned before, most of the parts on this bike are available to the public, but when it comes to suspension, the advantage of Factory components and settings is a huge advantage in the right hands.

PowerPlant Pro Circuit Ti6 Exhaust/Vortex ECU Taking a bike with an already well renowned strong engine package, it is the job of the CDR team to make this Motor package rideable and consistent for their riders, providing power that is there at the exact moment a rider wants it. The Vortex ECU with exclusive CDR ignition maps and Pro Circuit Ti6 Exhaust system are the tools CDR chooses to make this happen.

Tyres Dunlop Geomax with Moose Tube With all of the power and great handling characteristics of the 2020 Yamaha YZ450f, keeping the bike on track with traction and reliable grip is a massive part to the puzzle of winning races. The Dunlop production Geomax tyres have a stellar reputation for being one of the best on the market. Take a look at the corner speed of Dan Reardon, Josh Hill and Luke Clout at round 3 of the Australian Supercross here at Wollongong, you might just see what that extra grip can achieve out on the track.
