With two huge days of racing over the weekend, the track becomes very tough and technical, and often with championships up for grabs, racing is always action packed. This round is much more than a race meeting; the MX Nationals grand finale is an event on, and off the track.

HYDRATION ON RACE DAY Hello everyone and welcome to my final “Trainers corner” column for the 2015 MX nationals season. It’s hard to believe the season has gone by so fast but “the race must go on” as they say and we are staring down the barrel of the final two rounds of racing to crown the champions for another year. The final two rounds of the series will take place in QLD and in particular the final round at Coolum always throws a spanner in the works in regards to a racers fitness and endurance. This is because of the tracks deep sand surface that provides the riders with one of the roughest and most challenging tracks to race on of the entire series. Secondly, the climate at Coolum is considerably warmer than the southern half of the country where a large contingent of racers live and train during the week and majority of the year.

26

IMPORTANCE OF HYDRATION This leads me to my focal point of this article being

second moto result? This can be attributed sometimes

two rounds being back to back there is a possibility for a rider to seriously affect his championship standings

Loosing water out of your bodies system is not the only concern however. With sweat comes the loss of Electrolytes. Calcium, sodium, potassium and magnesium are all essential minerals grouped into the electrolyte category that help our bodies maintain normal cellular activities. Prolonged sweating and dehydration can lead to increased electrolyte losses with performance hindering side effects of increased body temperature, cramping, headaches and nausea to name a few. The performance hindering results of a motocross athlete from these side effects would be disastrous to his results at this late stage of the season. Do you ever notice a rider absolutely ripping in moto one only to see them suffer and slump to an average

“NEGLECTING HIS BASIC NEEDS TO REFUEL AND REHYDRATE BETWEEN MOTO’S” 27

heading into the final round at Coolum.

WHAT TO DO

THE BROADFORD RUTS WHERE EASY FOR KIRK GIBBS, HE NAVIGATES THE CORNERS

The majority of professional riders will have their hydration and nutrition routine under control however I have seen and heard even some of the top names in the sport be guilty of this mistake at some point in their careers and it is a hard mistake that is learned the hard way. Hydration starts long before an event and the morning of the race. 48 hours before the event is a good time to start and ensure you are drinking plenty of water. The night before the event and during race day I recommend consuming an electrolyte supplement, the sodium in these drinks triggers a greater thirst compared to drinking water alone and will ensure that you are not only hydrated but replenished with electrolyte stores to ensure your performance is not hindered by the effects of dehydration down the stretch of such a hot and demanding race day as the final round of the championship at Coolum.

That’s all from me in 2015, make sure you tune into www.nrgtv.com.au to catch the final rounds of racing live. I can’t wait to see all the action unfold and the champions be crowned! See you all in 2016 for another amazing year of racing, training and the sport we all live and breathe. Motocross! HIT AND MISS Round TWO

DYLAN LONG Australian whip king Dylan Long has often been knocking on the door of podiums and race wins, but now with some solid factory backing from NPS Monster Energy Kawasaki he’s realised his dream by claiming an outstanding victory in the second MX1 moto. In just his third outing with the Troy Carroll-led outfit, Long has proven to be a real talent and the rough diamond is starting to have his edges cut and refined. Backing his race win up with a seventh in the opening race, Long finished second overall for the day.

33

<

CDR YAMAHA

There were a lot of smiles under Craig Dack’s factory Yamaha tent as the sun set on an entertaining day at Nowra. Comeback king Dan Reardon completed his fairytale return to racing with a solid 1-2 performance to earn his first overall since hanging up his boots over two years ago. On top of that, Reardon’s teammate Kade Mosig continued his run of good form with his second consecutive podium appearance, strengthening his grip on third overall in the championship. < LUKE CLOUT Serco Yamaha’s defending champ returned to his familiar spot on top of the box on Sunday. It’s been a surprisingly long time between drinks for Clouty, with his last overall win coming way back at round three of the championship at Broadford before Caleb Ward went on a tear. A busted thumb and a tough return to peak form saw his championship lead evaporate, but with his win at Nowra he’s closed the gap to former teammate Jay Wilson to just three points. The MX2 championship is going to go down to the wire! 34

<

BEN TOWNLEY

I honestly don’t know what to write about this situation, but I do believe that if Ben Townley’s shoulder injury is anything serious we won’t ever see him line up again at an MX Nationals race. Every time the former world and American regional champion starts to make a glimmer of a comeback, injuries knock him down. Over the past couple of weeks BT has hinted that he might make a comeback to fulltime racing again, as he’s rediscovered his passion for professional bar-banging. There hasn’t been any word yet on the extent of the shoulder injury he sustained during qualifying at Nowra, but if history is repeating himself we’re not holding our hopes that it’ll be a straight-forward comeback. < CALEB WARD MX2 tearaway winner over the past four rounds, Caleb Ward had a bit of a mare at Nowra. Hampered by bad starts and what he later admitted as being a case of being “too nice” on the track, Ward struggled to barge his way through the pack and found himself getting caught in traffic and circulating down in 13th (moto one) and seventh (moto two) on his way to a very unfamiliar 11th overall. With two more sprawling tracks left in the championship we’d be very surprised if we see the Queenslander finish that far down the pecking order. 35

MYTH BUSTING AMA VS. MXGP It is the great motocross debate that has spanned generations and to this day still brings up fiery opinions – Which are the world leaders in motocross: USA or Europeans?

I’m not just going to skim over this subject, because that’s not what “Myth Busting” is about. We are going to take an in depth look at the aspects which set these two diverse series’ apart and try to clear up the grey areas that pop up in common discussion.

Defending MX2 Champ Luke Clout talks the title hunt, rivalries, and American ambitions

Looking at this year and where you are at so far, how are you feeling about 2015 as a whole? I think 2015 has been pretty solid for me. I’ve had three round wins and quite a few race wins, and I think I’ve been riding well. It’s unfortunate that I got hurt and had to get surgery, and that kind of put a holt on everything a bit. But since then everything has been going really well – we’ve started to find our feet and I’ve put a lot of time in on the bike and I’m back to training as I usually would. We had a month off the bike during the season and that hurt me a little bit, but other than that, I feel I’m going really well and everything is starting to gel together, so I’m looking forward to the last two rounds. You’ve been pretty vocal about how much you thrive off having that the red plate, has it been difficult seeing your former team mate leading the championship over the last two rounds? Oh not at all. Like you said I do like having the red plate and to take control of the championship, and it is something different to not have it on my bike, but I’ve just used it as motivation. Jay is riding well, and it’s cool for it to be coming down to the wire, but I do think I can get that red plate back. We’ve got two rounds to go, and I’ve been putting in a lot over these past few weeks and I’m feeling 100 per cent. I want this championship so bad, and I’m sure Jay does too, so it’s definitely going to come down to the wire, and I’m really excited for the last two rounds.

49

At Nowra, you had the opportunity to take back the championship lead in that final moto. When Jay passed you, what was going through your mind? Oh you know, I think I definitely let that one slip. I obviously won that first race, and got a really good start in the second race and I pulled away a bit, but I just got really tight. I got arm pump, which is really frustrating because I don’t usually get it, so I just tried to hold off Jay and then I just made a few little mistakes. I knew Jay was riding well, so I just tried to hold him off as long as possible but he did manage to get around me. We have four more races and we still have time. I wanted to leave Nowra with the overall, and that’s what we did. It’s always tough when a competitor does pass you, but I looked at the bigger championship picture there, and kinda settled for third in that race. You probably know Jay better than most people out there, and given he was your teammate only last

year, does that make racing against him harder or easier? Jay and I have been very good friends for a few years now and he was my teammate too, but I don’t think that changes how we race. In saying that, I know him very well and he knows me very well too, so we’re both in the same boat there, but I don’t think that changes things. He might know a few of my niggles and I might know a few of his, but other than that we are both riding well. When it comes down to it, it’s about who wants it the most, and obviously we both want it a lot. It’s just going to come down to who wants to put it on the edge and get it done, and I’m sure we both do. So I’m really looking forward to these last two rounds – it’s going to come down to the wire and I’m really excited to see how it all pans out. With everyone sort of tipping that the MX1 championship is a bit of a done deal, it’s been cool because the MX2 championship has been back and forth between me and Jay, and also Caleb Ward. It’s a nail biter finish

50

in our class for the last two rounds, and that’s definitely the way to go for the fans (haha). It’s exciting for it to be coming down to Coolum and still not know who is going to win the championship. When you’re heading into that last race at Coolum and you still don’t know, the nerves kick in and I’m looking forward to that. I love pressure and motivation and I’m excited to see how it pans out. Obviously Jay is riding very well and I’m going to have to keep working hard but it’s going to be exciting to see how it goes. What are your thoughts on this year’s Australian MXoN Team? I definitely think it’s a good pick. Jay is riding very well and he has the red plate, so they have selected him for a reason. I can’t really argue with that, it was obviously out of Jay and myself for the 250 ride. I’m glad Jay is getting to go – you know I would have loved to have gone, but you can’t have everything and I’m glad that Jay has got a chance, he’s proved himself. Toddy (Todd Waters) and Dean Ferris too, that was kind of a no-brainer there. They’ve been over there, and they’re established and it makes it a bit easier for the team to pick those guys. It’s unfortunate that Kirk didn’t get a go; he’s been riding very, very well. But I just think they’re already over in Europe, they live there, and it just makes sense for those two to go and race. If Ferris wanted to step down to the 250, they probably would have taken Kirk. Obviously Ferris wanted to ride a 450 and I think that’s a good thing – him and Toddy are riding very well this year, and they’ve had some good results. Team Australia is going to be a very strong team and I hope they show everyone how well they can go – it’s unfortunate that I’m not racing but like I said you can’t have everything. Hopefully they go over there, and ride the wheels off the bikes and have a good result. I wish them all good luck, and I think they should go very well.

51

You have previously voiced your desire to race in America next year, how’s that looking at this point?

In saying that, if things don’t pan out, and there isn’t an offer in America for 2016, would you consider just making the move to the US anyway?

Yeah it’s looking pretty good this year. I went over there last year in between the season and had a few test rides with some teams and things like that, and unfortunately it didn’t all work out. There are a lot of good riders in America, and those teams chose to go down the American path – it didn’t really bother me, I’m still very young and that’s the way it goes. So this year I came over here had to prove that I can win. I need to win this championship so that I can have something in concrete, and that’s basically the dream that if I do win this championship, you should see me in the US next year. There’s a lot of nerves coming down to this, and a lot of pressure but it’s what makes me wake up in the morning and get out of bed and go train. I have a lot of motivation so hopefully you’ll see me in the US and Australia will have another guy to cheer on over there.

It’s all up in the air at the moment. I’m not quite sure what’s going to happen and I have definitely considered going to America even if I don’t get a ride, and just doing it by myself. I think I’ll just wait and see what happens. I don’t think I’m wasting time in Australia, I would never say that. The series here is very good, and the quality of riding is good, I just think with my youth and having my age on my side that it might be a good time to go over and try it. I do want to see myself in America next year racing and riding but I’ll keep my options open. If you are in Australia next year, will you be looking to stay in MX2 or will you move up in to the MX1 class? If I’m in Australia next year I would definitely look at stepping up. If the right offer came up, and it was

52

a good offer I would definitely look at stepping up. I think I’m a good 450 rider – I raced a lot in America on a 450 and I actually like riding the 450 a lot. I would definitely like to look at that but the main priority right now is to try and get myself to the US and be there for a few years. I would love to ride and race, and just be successful over there. It’s a long way to go to that, but fingers crossed you’ll see me over there. Can you win this year’s championship? And what is it going to take?

flying home from Murray Bridge with an injury and having to get surgery, I still believed I could win this championship. I wake up in the morning, and I’m so motivated to get out of bed and train, and I wouldn’t be doing that if I didn’t believe I could win. Like I said, Jay is riding well and he’s not going to make that easy for me by any means. But I’m just putting my work down, and staying low and doing everything right. Hopefully we can keep doing what we’re doing, work hard and bring it home at Coolum.

I definitely believe I can win this championship, and I have from day one. I believed at Horsham at round one that I could win, and even when I was

KALE MAKEHAM

KEIRON HALL

MX2 6th OVERALL YA M A HA

Finishing sixth overall against the nation’s best MX2 racers in a guest appearance is no mean feat, but Hall convincingly did just that on Sunday at Nowra. He was right in the mix across both motos, finishing a fine sixth in the opening race before improving further to fifth in the second. We’re sure there were a few regulars thinking ‘who’s that?’ on track initially, showing just how capable he is on board the privateer YZ250F, before going back to excavating this week! 70

JACK SIMPSON

MX2 10th OVERALL DAVEY M OTO RSPO RTS K TM

As a rider with so much untapped potential, we’ve scratched out heads plenty of times in 2015 while Simpson struggled in the MX2 field. Nowra marked a turnaround of sorts for the Victorian champion, featuring up front during both motos and seemingly comfortable doing so. The end result of 10th overall via 9-10 moto finishes wasn’t as high as it could have been, but it should give him some confidence entering the final rounds. 71

KALE MAKEHAM

MX1 9th OVERALL T EA M M OTU L SU Z U K I

Being a factory rider on Team Motul Suzuki, there has been a lot of expectation placed upon Kale Makeham this year, but he’s largely failed to fire across the course of a national weekend. His capabilities are no doubt high as an MX1 rookie and there have been glimpses of real form, but consistency has been hard to come by and the added pressure of flying Suzuki’s flag solo due to Matt Moss’ injuries adds pressure. So, with ninth overall after a pair of ninths in the races, lets hope he can make gains from here for a strong finish. 72

QUESTIONS WITH EGAN MASTIN

Tell us about your deal with Suzuki So I’m doing the last two rounds of Motocross filling in for Matt Moss. I was actually at the airport on the way home from racing in America and I got the call from Jay Foreman asking if I was interested. I was just going to have some time off and have a break for a bit, then head back to America in a couple of months but then when this opportunity came up I took it! Last song you listened to on your ipod? It was a Kevin Gates song. First car? It was a big white Volkswagen van, and I’ve still got it (laughs) Favorite Australian track and why? It’s probably Mooree actually. I like it a lot, it has an awesome lay out, fun jumps and the surface is pretty sticky and tacky so it’s pretty much riding heaven!

76

Most embarrassing racing moment? Back when I was racing when I was younger, I actually forgot my boots. It was really embarrassing, because I couldn’t actually race. Safe to say I learnt my lesson and I haven’t done that again. Least favorite rider to race? That’s easy, Ryan Dungey. He’s just way too fast!

ROUND 8

BR EA K D OW N NOWRA

CDR Yamaha’s Daniel Reardon has returned to his pre – retirement winning ways today, taking the top step on the Monster MX1 podium for the first time this year, in a fairytale ending to round eight of the MX Nationals. With the round kicking off in close to perfect conditions at the Nowra Motoplex today, the venue provided the perfect stage for thrills, spills and excitement in the Monster Energy MX1 Class. After the morning’s 15 minute qualifying session, and Go Pro Super Pole, KTM Motocross Racing’s Kirk Gibbs took the number one qualifying position with a 1:42.306 lap time, while teammate and Nowra local Luke Styke had his first ever SuperPole experience, finishing his first hit out with third pick of the grid. In the biggest upset from the qualifying session, Penrite Honda Racing Team’s Ben Townley was ruled out of racing for the remainder of the day after going down during the session and injuring his shoulder,

Daniel Reardon (1st - 2nd) 1st Overall 67 Points “It’s been a long time since I’ve been up here on the overall podium so it feels awesome,” he said. “To tell you the truth, I probably didn’t expect myself to be in this position this year, it’s been a bit of a hard year. The team has been great and I’m very thankful to have the opportunity to come back racing again. “I love this sport and that’s the reason why I’m back. I am over the moon to get this overall win, and to go home with a number one plate feels really good.

RACE RECAP - DAN REARDON CDR Yamaha racer details Nowra MX1 victory upon return. - Powered by motoonline.com.au

Dan, Nowra MX1 winner with 1-2 results for today. It must feel pretty good!

Yeah, it feels awesome. You know, at the start of the year I don’t know if that was in the plans, but after getting a couple of races under my belt we thought that maybe it’s possible. It’s been good, it’s been a really fun year so far, we still have a couple of rounds left, but to get that feels amazing. The main thing is just consistency – I’ve led many races, many laps this year, but just haven’t been able to put two races together. I was just happy, that was my main goal going into today, whatever happens to put two races together. Awesome to come away with the win, I’m over the moon and ecstatic for it.

DAN REARDON

RACE RECAP

The track today was tight in some places, some high speed sections as well, what were your thoughts on that? It produced some really close racing. The track was tough mentally because it didn’t allow you to push really, really hard. Anytime you did, especially as the day progressed, you ended up making a small mistake. I was my own worst enemy in that second moto, probably hovering around 10th, so I had to ride super-aggressive because I needed to be up there. This track didn’t allow you to wait for an opportunity, you had to make one and yeah, so considering, I’m just really pumped. I was really happy with that first moto win, to lead from start to finish felt a lot better than that second moto did, but at the end of the day when the points add up I was just happy to stand at the top.

Earlier in the season you said you wanted on paper, at the end of the day, to look good and it doesn’t get any better than a win obviously. That’s an important part of it as well, getting that overall result. For sure and you’re right, I said to a couple of people if someone ever asked me what my goal or plans were this year, I just wanted to look good on paper. Unfortunately that hasn’t happened. I don’t want to contact all my sponsors on Monday and say ‘oh yeah we were going pretty good, but…’ you know? So I am just glad to put two together and number one looks awesome. We have a bit of a break now, three weeks, and then the last two rounds, so I’m looking forward to being in my hometown up in Queensland and hopefully we can finish the season off strong.

88

DAN REARDON

RACE RECAP

Just quickly, the comeback, after a couple of years out, is it starting to feel natural again eight rounds in? Yes and no. It is because I totally come back because I love the sport and I want to this again. But this year’s been tough, you know, a lot of people forget – well they don’t forget, they probably don’t even know – that before the season started I was away working in the mines, I was still sitting on the couch drinking beer and I had no off-season or pre-season. I pretty much jumped in feet-first and said ‘okay, lets do this’. I signed with CDR four weeks prior to the first round and I didn’t have any preparation really. We’ve just been rolling with the punches, trying to improve bits and pieces we test throughout the season, to try and help be comfortable and go faster. It’s been good, the team’s been patient, and they know where we started from and to get a win. My goals continually change, I try not to change them too much week after week, but once again I’m just pumped.

It’s definitely good to see, adds a lot to the class, and well done.

Yeah, thank you.

CLOUT SECURES ROUND EIGHT WIN, AND KEEPS CHAMPIONSHIP HOPES ALIVE 91

ROUND 8

BR EA K D OW N NOWRA

Serco Yamaha’s Luke Clout has kept his MX2 Championship hopes alive, after round eight of the MX Nationals at the Nowra Motoplex today, narrowing his former team mate Jay Wilson’s (JCR Yamaha) lead to a mere three points. The day kicked off with just a touch of moisture thanks to overnight rain at the Nowra Motoplex, setting the Motul MX2 riders up for a day of action packed racing. In moto one, Serco Yamaha’s Luke Clout proved his chase for a 2015 title is far from over. Despite taking only a top five start, Clout launched himself into the race lead, and by the half waypoint had more than two seconds separating him from his competitors. With Clout in the lead, the performance that also turned heads was that of Yamaha’s Wilson. After crashing after the first turn, the series point’s leader picked off rider after rider, charging from last all the way to an outstanding third place. Husqvarna’s

KTM mounted Jayden Rykers has taken a clean sweep once again in Nowra today, proving not only that he is a serious contender for the Pirelli MXD championship, but also cementing that he is a force to be reckoned with. With the Pirelli MXD Championships beginning to tighten up, round eight of the series got to a flying start at the Nowra Motoplex today, and with a title on the line, racing was tough, fierce, and action packed. In moto one, the form of KTM Australia’s Jayden Rykers continued to flow into round eight. After taking the first hole shot of the day, Rykers fought off red plate holder Wilson Todd (GYTR Yamaha) to take the moto one race win, ahead of Todd, and Raceline Pirelli Suzuki’s Jesse Madden who took second and third respectively.

I qualified second, but that last moto on the two stroke was tough,” he said. “I was just trying to carry some momentum, and it’s one of those tracks that you have to put it up the inside, which I don’t like to do too much. “At the end of the day, I want to win and I want to be on top, so you have to do what you have to do. “There’s a big group of people behind me, and a lot of people who have put in a lot to get me up here so it’s good to get the job done once again for them.”

When points were tallied, it was Rykers who once again scored the top step on the Pirelli MXD podium. The famous Echo Valley Circuit The Echo Valley circuit from its beginning has been regarded as one of the best motocross tracks in Australia. Before 1975 when the first Mountain Man Motocross was held, the challenging elevation of the track had not been witnessed in Australia before. Described as European style, Echo Valley started the evolution of tracks being developed around the country and to this day is still one of the most spectacular places to race, and for spectators to see up close high flying, beam blasting, handlebar to handlebar racing action. The hosts and legends of Mountain Man Motocross Spectators will hear commentary and interviews from the ‘Motor Mouth’ of motocross Mr Bob Johnson, a legend in his own right. He will delve into the past with all the previous winners of Mountain Man, and talk with the current stars, hearing their impressions of what it takes to be a champion of motocross and conquer the Echo Valley circuit. Past winning legends will ride parade laps at mid-day on replica bikes, the same as they rode back when they won the Mountain Man Motocross crown.

ROUND 7 RESTORATION COMPETITION

WINNING BIKE John Runciman 1974 Mark VIII Bultaco Pursang When did you buy the bike? I bought the basket case four and a half years ago Tell me about the restoration process! The previous history was is that I owned one back in 1975 and that’s why I always had a yen to either buy one, or if not build one. I bought the basket case and it sat in the shed for 12 months and I did nothing with it. It took a while to look around and source the parts, new and used. A lot of the bits I got weren’t true to that model; they were Bultaco parts but different models. So then I had the motor rebuilt by a guy down in Traralgon, and he did a great job. The motor was in bits, and a lot of the parts ended up costing me a lot and I was left a bit short changed but I guess that’s what happens when you aren’t too sure what you’re buying (laughs) The main reason I bought the basket case was because it had matching engine and frame numbers – which down the track, if I sold it (which I’m not going to) has more value to collectors, if those bits are matching. I stripped everything back and the frame was all bent and broken in places. There were many, many hours put in to repair the frame, and the swing arm – with previous models like that back in the olden days they used to weld bits onto them to give them longer travel and that sort of thing. So I took it back to standard. I did all of the putting together and the welding, and all the things that needed doing myself. When I bought it, it didn’t have a tank, all it was, was a frame, a couple of wheels and some forks. I was lucky enough to be able to source an original tank, so that’s on there now. I also polished up all of the alloy for the triple clamps and bits and pieces, so I’m very proud of how it’s turned out.

Do you ride the bike? At the moment I haven’t rode the bike because I finished it on New Years Eve last year and I rode it around the backyard and since then it’s been too hot, or too dusty, but I’m going to take it to a meeting in Undera on October the 4th, so I’ll take it out there then and ride it around with all of the other vintage bikes!

CDR YAMAHA DAN REARDON FINALLY CRACKS IT FOR HIS FIRST ROUND WIN OF THE YEAR AT NOWRA

CDR Yamaha’s Dan Reardon ticked another box in his comeback to racing by winning round eight of the 2015 MX Nationals, held at the Nowra circuit, over the weekend. After spending two years on the sidelines, Reardon’s return to racing has been impressive and he can now add a round win to go along with moto wins earlier in the season. It proved to be a very successful day for CDR Yamaha at Nowra with Reardon taking the win and team mate, Kade Mosig, landing in third to make it a team 1-3 for the round.

“It’s been a while coming so thank you to everyone that has helped me get this far. CDR Yamaha and all the team have been amazing and I hope this really kicks me on for the final couple of rounds,” Reardon ended. Kade Mosig backed up his round win at Shepparton just two weeks earlier with another podium performance at round eight in Nowra taking third place. Mosig has been building consistency into his racing the past few rounds and his combination of speed, fitness and now common sense race smarts is showing on the score board as he is closing in on second place in the championship.

Reardon looked in good form right from the outset putting himself in the Go Pro Superpole Top five shootout and logging impressive laps during the qualifying sessions. On the tight Nowra circuit, good starts were vital and Reardon got that in race one and was able to move into the lead in the early stages of the race.

Mosig finished the day with 2-5 results for his third overall and satisfied with a solid day at Nowra.

Although he was unable to break away from the field, Reardon was able to maintain enough margin over his rivals to ride his own race and even when team mate Kade Mosig closed in on the final lap, Reardon had enough cushion to take the win and get his day started in the perfect fashion.

“It’s good to be able to string a few rounds together now and standing up on the podium at the end of each round is always the goal so I’m glad to be finally getting that sorted,” Kade said.

Race two again saw a good start from Reardon and he again made some passes early that saw him move into second place and he wouldn’t relinquish it until the finish line. His 1-2 scores gave him the overall round victory, his first since 2007 and a much needed confidence boost going into the final two rounds. “Well, I’m glad to get that monkey off my back,” Reardon explained. “I have really enjoyed my return to racing but some of my results have been frustrating as I knew I was capable of winning but I just wasn’t getting it done. “After I won the first race, I was so determined not to let this one go, so when I got to where I needed to be I settled down, put in solid laps and made sure I secured the round win.

“All up things went pretty well. They only thing I could ask for from today was maybe some better starts as they were so important on a track like this but my speed was pretty good and I felt good on the bike.

Team owner, Craig Dack, was again all smiles after the Nowra event as his team rides name make it two wins in a row and his plea for consistency during the half time break is rewarding the riders. “I’m really pleased with both guys today, not just about the results but the way they went about it. They rode the conditions well, were smart when they needed to be smart and fast when they needed to be fast. Although its round eight, everything seems to be gelling in the team and the results are starting to flow,” Dack ends. The CDR Yamaha team now take aim for the picturesque Echo Valley circuit in Toowoomba for round nine of the championship. Both riders will he the rolling red clay hills with confidence and momentum and again look for more good results.

SERCO YAMAHA CLOUT CLOSES IN AT NOWRA

Serco Yamaha’s Luke Clout gained valuable points after taking the victory at round eight of the MX Nationals at Nowra in a very tight battle for the MX2 championship. Clout came into the eighth round needing to bounce back from the last two events that saw him below his best. With the championship battle against Jay Wilson coming down to the wire, every point gained is priceless and only three points separate the pair with just two rounds remaining. Clout was inside the top three as the field completed the opening lap of race one. One rider fell and then just another lap later, Clout made the pass for the lead and began to stretch it over next 20 minutes. With the laps winding down in the 30 minute race, Clout was able to ride it home and take the first race win to get his season back on track. Race two and Clout was again up front and hoping to check out but he was unable to break away from the field. He was passed by Dylan Wills and then Jay Wilson made his move late in the race as Clout battled with arm fatigue and crossed the finish line in third place. His 1-3 results gave him the round win and really turns up the heat in an enthralling championship chase. “Good day, that should have been a bit better,” Clout said. “Race one went well and we go the win and I put myself in good position for the second race but those guys were able to get by me which I’m not happy about. “My arms pumped up a bit during the race as I was riding a bit tight but that’s no excuse and I need to get that out of my system for the final two rounds,” he said.

Moto two was better as Beaton was part of a fast moving freight train in positions four through to eighth. He was able to pass some riders and finish the moto in sixth place and his 10-6 scores saw him finish in eighth for the round. Beaton holds down fourth in the championship with two rounds remaining. “I finally got myself in a good position early in race one and I was trying to pass Simmo for 15 minutes and was getting frustrated. I was in third but could see the guys behind us starting to gain and Clout starting to get away and I felt I had to do something. “I pulled a pretty aggressive move in the first turn and we hit and both went down. I didn’t mean to take us down, I just wanted to get past and get after Clout. “Race two was ok as there was a pack of us all travelling at the same speed. It was difficult to make passes out there and while I moved forward a bit, the other guys were also doing a good speed and I finished sixth. “I’m looking forward to the final two tracks as I like Coolum and I hear Echo Valley has big hills and ruts which is something that I like,” Beaton said.

Team mate Jed Beaton was also on the speed at Nowra although it won’t show up on the results sheet. Beaton was running third in the opening moto and desperate to pass into second as he felt he was faster and sensed he had to make something happen if he wanted to win the race. He sliced under Jack Simpson only for them both to collide and go down. He remounted and got going again but could only salvage a 10th place finish.

GYTR YAMAHA WILSON TODD EXTENDS LEAD IN MXD CHAMPIONSHIP

GYTR Yamaha’s Wilson Todd put together a consistent weekend of racing to extend his lead to 18 points after round eight of the MX Nationals wrapped up on the weekend. The tight Nowra circuit played host to round eight of the championship and Todd was to gain valuable points in the championship as it heads towards the final rounds. Todd again qualified fastest but didn’t get the best start in race one and had to make some passes in his pursuit of race leader, Jaiden Rykers. He moved into second place and was five seconds down on the lead and that gap yo-yoed as the pair traded lap times. Rykers took the win with Todd in second place. Moto two and Todd took control of the race on lap two and went to work. Rykers slotted in behind again, the pair separated themselves from the pack. Todd built up a three second lead and looked to have things under control when he made a big mistake in a tight turn at the back of the circuit that allowed Rykers to close in. Rykers made a pass with two laps remaining and that’s how it finished, with Todd in second place.

Moto two and Evans was back in the pack but charged his way through to third by mid race distance and was looking good for his third podium in succession when he stalled the bike and dropped several positions. He clawed his way back to fifth place but his 4-5 scores tied him with Zak Small and Jesse Madden for third overall. “It wasn’t my best day,” Mitch said with disappointment. “I struggled to ride the track the way I wanted to ride it and couldn’t really get going. My starts weren’t great either and that didn’t help. “The next round is at Toowoomba which is a track I have never raced before so I’m looking forward to racing there and redeeming myself,” Evans ends. The GYTR Yamaha team will be out for a strong finish to the season with rounds nine and ten on back to back weekends at Toowoomba and Coolum respectively. Both riders want to finish the season in top form and look forward to the challenge of racing two great tracks.

Wilson now holds an 18 point lead with two rounds remaining and knows he is in for a fight to win this championship. “The last two rounds I was in position to win the final motos but I have made a mistake will just a couple of laps to go, so I’m not real happy about that. I felt I rode the last moto pretty well but I need to stay focused right until the very end. “We have a two week break now before we go to Toowoomba so there is time to get things sorted and ensure I come out swinging at the final two rounds,” Todd ends. Mitch Evans had a tough day by his high standards, falling in both races to finish up equal third on the day, but fourth on a count back. Evans didn’t get a great jump in moto one but fought his way through to fourth place in a solid ride.

M0TUL SUZUKI EGAN MASTIN JOINS TEAM MOTUL SUZUKI

17 year old Egan Mastin will join Team Motul Suzuki for the final two rounds of the 2015 MX Nationals, filling in for the injured Matt Moss at both the Toowoomba and Coolum rounds of the series. Mastin who won the MXD championship in 2014, has spent the majority of 2015 living and racing in the United States focusing on the American Amateur Motocross Championships recently held at Lorretta Lynns. Racing both the Open Pro Sport and 450 A classes, Mastin proved that he is a talented 450 rider when he crossed the line first in the opening Open Pro Sport race of the week long event.

“His results at Loretta’s had his name popping up again so we gave him a call while he was on his way back to Australia and offered him a ride for the final two rounds of the nationals and we excited to have Egan joining our team to round out the series. “Having a rider that lives local to the team is a bonus as it will give us the opportunity to work with him in the short time we have before we head to Toowoomba in just under two weeks time.” Foreman concluded.

With Mastin’s American season coming to a conclusion last weekend, Motul Suzuki team manager Jay Foreman extended an offer to the Newcastle based rider to contest at the final two MX Nationals rounds, with Mastin jumping at the chance to race aboard one of the teams RM-Z450 race machines. “It felt awesome to get the call from Jay offering myself the chance to race for the team at the final two rounds of the MX Nationals.” Mastin enthused after arriving home late last week. “I am looking forward to racing back here in Australia. The last time I raced here was the final round of the MX Nationals last year and to return to the nationals with the team that has won the past two MX1 championships is a great opportunity.” “I am really looking forward to getting out there.” Mastin added. Foreman is looking forward to seeing Mastin back racing in Australia and is glad to be able to give one of Australia’s up and coming racers the opportunity to once again display their talent on home soil. “Mastin certainly impressed last year in the MXD class and that certainly did not go unnoticed, but with him making the choice to race overseas this year his name had fallen off the map a little bit.” Foreman commented.

RACELINE SUZUKI RETURN TO FORM AT NOWRA FOR RACELINE PIRELLI SUZUKI’S MADDEN

Raceline Pirelli Suzuki returned to form at Nowra on the weekend, with MXD young gun Jesse Madden putting the pieces of the puzzle together, handing the team top five results once again.

putting in a fair bit of training for those, and hopefully we can get it back on the box again at the next two.”

After a tough couple of rounds, Madden headed to round eight of the MX Nationals at the Nowra Motoplex, confident that his hard-pack training regime would contribute towards improved results.

“This weekend was a big improvement for us, and we’re certainly feeling better heading into these last two rounds after Nowra,” he said.

With the day kicking off with just a drizzle of rain to coat the surface of the track, Madden was determined to get his round eight campaign started right – and at the conclusion of the Pirelli MXD qualifying session, Madden had fourth pick of the grid for moto one. With renewed confidence, the gates dropped on moto one, and Madden was lightening fast into the first turn. And at the conclusion of the 20-minute race, collected third position.

Chris Woods – Raceline Pirelli Suzuki Team Manager:

“Jesse was a little bit unlucky in that second moto having two crashes, and although we were tied on points for third he finished up in fifth overall on a countback. “The next two round being in Queensland will be good, as Jesse is familiar with those tracks, so as I’ve said before, it’s just head down and bum up before we get to Coolum.”

In moto two, things for Madden did not go exactly to plan – despite his efforts, two crashes during the final race of the day saw him finish the moto in 8th, providing Madden and the Raceline Pirelli Suzuki team with a top five result for the day. Despite Madden being tied with two others on 54 points for third overall, the Suzuki mounted rider was awarded fifth overall for the round due to a count back. Jesse Madden – MXD – 5th Overall – (3rd, 8th): “The weekend was much better for me. Moto one was awesome, I got a pretty good start and worked my way up to third, which was a huge improvement,” he said. “I really like the track – it’s what I’ve been training for and I felt fast out there. “In moto two I was in about fourth and I was about to pass for third and I put it down. Then got up, and put it down again – so I was pretty devastated with the result in the last one. “The series moves on to Queensland now, and both Toowoomba and Coolum are my home tracks, so I’ll be

WILSONS HONDA MIXED BAG RESULTS AT ROUND EIGHT FOR PENRITE HONDA WILSON MX

Penrite Honda Wilson MX has come away from round eight of the MX Nationals at Nowra, with a mixed bag of racing results to their name, after another big weekend of racing. After welcoming Luke Wilson back from injury after sitting out round seven, the team was optimistic heading into the round, that both of their MX2 pilots could record encouraging results on the hard pack surface in New South Wales. For Wilson at round eight, track time was short lived. After gritting his teeth through an excruciating qualifying session, Wilson headed out in moto one, hoping that adrenaline could mask the pain his thumb was causing. However, the pain proved to be too much in race one – Wilson opting to return to the pits and leave the racing up to teammate Geran Stapleton for the remainder of the day. With Wilson out, Stapleton was left to fly the Penrite Honda Wilson MX flag in race one, and did so in spectacular fashion. After a solid start, Stapleton got to work, and crossed the line after 30 minutes in an outstanding fourth position, proving the pace is there to race with the front-runners. In race number two, Stapleton got to an impressive start, however was edged out on the tight Nowra circuit, eventually crossing the line in 12th position. At the conclusion of the round, and despite the bad luck in the final moto, Stapleton recorded an impressive seventh overall for round eight.

to put it all together in the first race was a bit of a confidence boost. “The final moto was a tough one. I loved the track and the technical riding is something I really enjoy, but I got caught up at the back of the pack and there weren’t a lot of passing opportunities. “All in all, it was a pretty positive weekend, and a big improvement, so we’ll just keep working hard and hopefully we can build on the results for the next two rounds.” Neale Wilson – Wilson MX Team Manager – “It wasn’t a bad weekend for us, and it was great to see Geran show us what he is capable of in that first moto,” he said. “Luke made the decision during moto one to sit out, which I actually thought was very sensible. Then when he was trying to get up on the top of the truck to watch the races he hit his head, and ended up cracking his head open. “I can’t say enough about Racesafe, those guys fixed Luke up even though he wasn’t racing and you can’t really put into words how valuable it is having them at the track at every round. “We loved Geran’s performance in the first race, we thought he could actually take a podium – if he can put two good races together we know that he can do it. “He’s shown what he’s capable of, and he’s got two more rounds to get himself on the box. If all of the stars align he can do it.”

Geran Stapleton MX2 – 7th Overall – (4th, 12th) “It was a bit of an up and down weekend, but I’m definitely happy with my result in the first moto,” he said. “The last few rounds have been a real challenge, so

KTM RACING KTM’S GIBBS AND STYKE MINIMISE A BAD DAY

It was a day when not everything went right for the KTM Motocross Racing Team’s MX1 contenders, but in a measure of their professionalism and prowess, Kirk Gibbs and Luke Styke managed to minimise the damage and maintain their championship positions at round eight of the MX Nationals. Offering limited passing, the Nowra track rewarded a good start and a clean run, but with his fractured shoulder of three weeks ago causing a drought of quality bike time in recent weeks, things didn’t go perfectly to plan for Kirk Gibbs. Gibbs suffered two crashes in the first moto, and a crash and a stall in the second, but each time fought back with typical doggedness, and did exceptionally well to salvage 5-4 results for sixth on the day, and actually extend his lead in the championship by two points. KTM teammate Luke Styke’s speed was again exceptional, with the Jervis Bay rider qualifying for Super Pole for the first time this year. However, Styke again fell foul of the traffic, hitting the deck after an altercation with another rider at the first turn and having to charge back through the pack. He made a heck of a fist of it, working his way back through to sixth, before taking a well-deserved podium finish in the second Moto to earn fourth on the day behind Daniel Reardon, Dylan Long and Kade Mosig. Kirk Gibbs – “Just a lack of bike time and silly mistakes cost me today. It was great to get fastest Super Pole lap, but in the first moto I was sitting fourth and after the rain and just struggling a little bit with water behind my tearoffs. I had a little crash, regrouped, then had another crash so two crashes really set me back. In the second I got a good start and was sitting third and felt like I could win, but made another little mistake and went down. I was coming back through again and then stalled it! I’m looking forward to getting some good bike time in over the next couple of weeks and getting back to where I know I can be.” Luke Styke – “I went 6-3 for fourth on the day. I got taken out again at the start of the first moto and I was

way back. It was a real hard track to pass on, real onelined, and we struggled a bit in that first one. In the second we got a better start, and starts were a bit key today. I felt like I was the fastest on the track most of the time, putting in good times, but it’s hard to come from behind when the track is so one-lined. It really wasn’t prepped the best – it was pretty much a case of whoever got the holeshot one.” In MX2 Racing: KTM Factory Support rider Caleb Ward’s winning streak came to an end at four after he struggled with starts at Nowra and finished 11th on the day. KTM Newcastle’s Dylan Wills had the conditions eating out of his hand however – recovering from a first moto crash to scramble from 19th back to 5th, then walking away with a moto two win for third place on the day behind Luke Clout, and Jay Wilson. In doing so, Wills leapfrogged from 10th into 8th place in the championship. Dylan Wills – “A good day for me today, but I’m a little bit disappointed to go down in moto one while I was leading – I went back to 19th but made my way back up to fifth, which was good. I’m disappointed to miss out on that first moto win, but I’m happy to walk away with one, particularly ahead of the two guys are battling for the championship, for sure. Caleb Ward– “Not a good day. The track wasn’t my kind of track at all, it was like a mini-bike track, but I struggled with bad starts in both races. The first one I was back l around 20th and I was just being too nice, it was the kind of track you really needed to pretty much make people move out of your way and just get it done, but I was probably being a bit nice and just didn’t ride it very well. I felt like I rode a lot better in the second moto but still the result wasn’t overly convincing.” In MXD racing, KTM Factory Support racer Jayden Rykers made his second straight Under 19 round win just as convincing as the first, with another two-moto demolition of the class on his KTM 250 SX. Victory at Nowra sees Rykers takeover second place in the championship, just 18 points in arrears of Wilson Todd.

HUSQVARNA MIXED FORTUNES FOR HUSQVARNA RACERS AT NOWRA

Husqvarna’s Factory Support squad riders gave it their all but had to be content with mixed results as the MX Nationals championship visited Nowra, south-west of Sydney, for the eighth of ten rounds. In the premier class, talented 18-year-old Husqvarna FC 450 rider Jesse Dobson was bitterly disappointed after 8-10 results yielded a result he’s no longer prepared to accept – 10th on the day. An off-track excursion of his own making in the opening moto and a vigorous moto 2 ‘pass’ by another rider which left him on the ground prevented Dobson from getting a clean moto result in either race, and he must look to Toowoomba in three weeks time for redemption. Craig Anderson Racing’s Aaron Tanti posted 15-11 results for 13th on the day after he fell and became stuck under his motorcycle in the opening moto. Tanti required ‘rescue’ by a track marshal before he could finish the race, and will also require X-Rays on his ankle this week. He bounced back with gritted teeth however, and took 11th place from the second moto. In the MX2 class, Nathan Crawford was fourth on the day after an exciting moto one in which he trailed the race winner across the line by less than two seconds. He missed out on the podium by just one place when he finished ninth in the second moto, and he has moved from eighth to seventh in the MX2 championship standings. Fellow MX2 rider Luke Arbon sat out the event with illness. MXD contender Connor Tierney endured a disappointing weekend by his own standards, courtesy of a preparation affected by injury and illness.

Jesse Dobson – FC 450: “A crapola day. The first moto I had a good start but made a little mistake, got crossrutted and jumped off the track and ended up stalling the bike. The second moto went all pair shaped. I was sitting in sixth and Gibbsy had just gone down and I felt like I could be a podium guy that moto, but Reardon decided to cut me in half in turn one. I kind of checked up to let him by, but he made sure I hit the ground and from then on it was pear-shaped. But oh well, it’s racing. It’s just stuff you encounter on the road to success, that’s all it is. I haven’t lost confidence – I’m just disappointed in result, I still know 100% that I’m a top guy, we’ve just got to put it all together in the next round and I will be up there.” Aaron Tanti – FC 350: “It was a pretty good day for me, but I do have to go get some x-rays on my ankle. I didn’t get the best start but I came out of the first two corners alright. In the second lap I ended up running in eighth but then I just had a little crash and the bike ended up on top of me, and I was stuck under my bike until a marshal came and got me, so I pretty much came from last to 15th. Then in the second moto I held tenth for most of it but ended up 11th. I didn’t have the fastest laps, but I only ended up dropping like two seconds from the start to the end of the moto, which is an improvement.” Connor Tierney – TC 250 “Not a good day, I just struggled this week. I’ve been a bit sick all week, and I just seemed to get worse the closer we got to the weekend. I just didn’t really have a good preparation. I had a big crash the week before and hurt my back pretty bad. I just didn’t go in there 100% and it showed pretty bad in my results. It was a setback and I’ll regroup over the next two weeks and try and come back and make a few more points up.”

Missing his usual edge the exciting Western Australian could only manage 5-6 moto finishes and slipped to third in the Under 19 championship, but he has two rounds left to see what impact he can make on the 23 point deficit to Wilson Todd.

Dylan Long has taken his first ever MX1 race win in his third round of racing aboard the factory Kawasaki KX450F at round 8 of the MX Nationals in Nowra, NSW over the weekend. The 20 year old Victorian joined the NPS Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing team prior to round 6 as a replacement rider for the injured Jake Moss. Since then, Dylan’s determination has paid off with top 5 results and now a race win. “It’s amazing! It’s one of the best feelings. I’ve been wanting to get this for so long and to finally get on the podium is awesome,” Dylan exclaimed.

Adam will look to capitalise on his overall championship position and push hard in the remaining rounds for a series podium. After round 8 of the MX Nationals he is more determined than ever to take the glory on his Kawasaki KX450F. Team Manager and MX legend, Troy Carroll, said, “I’m absolutely ecstatic for Dylan and the team. From the start he has shown potential in his first series on the 450’s and today he’s taken a rightful win on the Kawasaki. He deserves this result after all the training and dedication and this is just the beginning for him.”

Dylan didn’t get off to a great start in the first moto as he familiarised with the sandy Nowra track, crossing the line in 7th. Rain held off in the second moto as Dylan shined on his KX450F. A holeshot set Dylan up for a flawless moto that eventuated in a race win. “The last race was perfect and I was riding as solid as I could in the last four laps, just hanging out to see the last lap board. The NPS Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team have been amazing. They have given me all the support I have needed to win so there isn’t any reason why I shouldn’t have won today and in the next rounds,” said Long who placed 2nd overall for the round. Team mate, Adam Monea, came close to another race win on his KX450F after an intense battle for first place in moto one. An uncharacteristic stall and fall in the second moto saw Adam fall back to a 6th place finish. “In the first race I got a really good start, I almost had a holeshot but Reardon swung around the outside and took it off me. I had a lot of digs at Reardon early on and I got close to him a few times. It took a lot of energy and made me tightened up a little bit so I dropped to finish in 3rd. That was a little annoying because I had an opportunity to win that race. So it hurt a little bit. In the second moto I had a bad start and made some mistakes so I felt like all I was doing was eating rocks for 30 minutes and that’s not what I want,” Adam said.

K AWA S A K I R ACI N G TEA M KAWASAKI MX2 TEAMS COLLECT MX NATIONALS POINTS AT NOWRA

Exciting racing from Kawasaki supported MX2 riders took place at round 8 of the MX Nationals with steady results and championship points being collected. Four time Japanese Motocross Champion, Takeshi Katsuya, had an average start to the round on the dense and sandy track after qualifying 5th and placing 8th in the first moto. A solid start in the second moto saw Takeshi rocket along to finish in 4th on his KX250F. An overall result of 5th on the day wasn’t ideal for Takeshi, however he is still well within reach of the top spot on the championship podium. “It could have gone better today and I wasn’t happy with my riding. After the last round, I was 19 championship points away from first and now I’m about 30 away. I proved I can win against these younger guys and I’m just going to work towards getting those points and podiums in the last two rounds so that I can come out on top,” Takeshi commented. Alex Morris and Matt Ryan of the Proformance Kawasaki Racing Team were on track to a successful round after solid training and preparation. Race starts were the only thing that didn’t go their way, resulting in 16th and 15th positions for Alex and a commendable result of 19th and 17th for Matt Ryan in the first and second race respectively. Manager of Proformance Kawasaki Racing Team, Travis Whitten, said “The track was awesome. It looked like a fun track to ride but making passes isn’t easy on this track. The starts were important and a lot of riders struggled on the first corner because it was very tight and hard to get around there clean so it was challenging. Alex qualified 11th which was promising but he had a bad start in each race which ruined his day.” “Matt struggled with bad arm pump all day. We didn’t know why but it was probably the worst arm pump he has experienced in his whole career. In the second race he came off in the first lap which was unlucky and it was all chasing from there. “ Travis commented.

Kawasaki supported MX and off-road coach, Cody Mackie, relished the chance to line up against the best MX2 racers in the country at his local round. Cody entered the round without any expectations only to come away with 12th position overall after 12th and 13th in motos one and two respectively. “I had a blast today on my KX250F. It was great to see so many familiar faces. This was a massive part of my life for 10 years. The sport is the same but there are a lot of new riders who are doing really well which is great for Australian Motocross,” said Cody. Australian Women’s Motocross & Supercross Champion, Meghan Rutledge (Mad Meg), has blasted away her opponents aboard her Kawasaki KX250F at the final Women’s MX Nationals round over the weekend. The Australian Women’s Motocross Championship series was held over two rounds within the MX Nationals this year. Unfortunately due to injuring her thumb and missing the first round, Megan was out of the running for the title. This didn’t faze Meghan Rutledge of the Hitachi Mad Meg Race Team, who set the pace on her KX250F with the fastest lap in qualifying. She took the holeshot in the first moto and was untouchable with a lead of more than 2 seconds after the first lap. Meghan complimented her first race win with another effortless win in the second moto. “I came into the weekend with absolutely no preparation. To qualify first at the beginning of the day was a really good feeling. In the first race I got a holeshot and lead from start to finish. I built a really comfortable lead and just did what I had to do to win the race. I didn’t have the best start in the second moto. I regrouped and made some quick moves to gain the lead by the end of the first lap. Overall I’m really happy with my weekend. I went undefeated from qualifying to the first and second race,” Meghan said.
