President’s Message

8

From the desk of Cheryl Norman Caldwell the event of events, full of gratitude, to our community. Committee chair people have been identified and they are working away but your help is always welcome. If you can lend a helping hand please contact Jeannette directly at JWeiss@JWeissPR.com with “FIP Luncheon Volunteer” in the subject line so your email can be forwarded to the correct chair person.

They say that “season” is over, but we’re not really buying into that. As you will see when reading this message, we have a full and busy schedule ahead of us the next few months. Already half way into our year, and thanks to the generosity of our many donors and incredible volunteers, we’ve continued to financially assist 38 recipients in 2014. Kudos to everyone. Special gratitude and salutations to Taylor Anderson and Keiser University.

The Stuart Woman’s Club has created a wonderful event for fellow nonprofits this year. It’s called the “Charity Mascarade Dance Party” and will be held at a great venue, Fred Astaire Studios. The idea is to provide an event similar to “Dancing with The Stars” where many charities can come together and raise money for their missions. While it’s not a real dance competition, yours truly will kick off the Birkenstock’s and sneakers to dance with a professional, to raise money for Friends In Pink recipients at the Kane Center in Stuart, FL on October 18th. There will be a super Silent Auction. I don’t know what the other nonprofits are bringing but Johnny Walker Blue will be the star of our auction item.

It’s fundraising time again. Several events are in the spotlight. However we never forget how important our regular contributors are. So thank you in advance of your wonderful support - Margie’s Cardio for Cure, Sentiments, Zinga!, Bloomingdeals, Vero Beach High School Soccer team, Women’s Council of Realtors of Stuart-Martin County, Zumba with Teri and many more! Friends In Pink recipients receive the treatment they need because of you! IT’s BACK! On Saturday, Aug. 30, 2014, the Seventh Annual Friendship Luncheon will be held at Tradition Town Hall from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Last year Friends In Pink created our first recipient video honoring the people that we help. It was our “2013 Signature” effort made in cooperation with Dr. Cynthia Crawford of Vero Beach and Anthony Ignacio and company from Hollywood CA. You will see it in its entirety this year at our luncheon. Tickets, invitations and sponsorship information will be available soon.

We need volunteers to assist with the pre-dance party on September 27th, selling tickets, processing pledges at the event and assisting with event sponsorships. Please contact me if you’re interested in helping at this event at cncforfip@gmail.com with “Volunteering for Dancing events” in the subject line. On the following weekend of October 24 and 25th, 2014 Stuart Sailfish Club will be having the Saltwater Sisters fishing tournament to benefit the Sailfish Scholarship fund and Friends in Pink. We are delighted to be working with these ladies again. Stay tuned for details of the event. Already this is proving to be a huge success with interest from Yacht Clubs as far away as Indian River and Palm Beach Counties. What a great way to finish out Breast Cancer Month. Needless to say we will need volunteers to corral our auction items and assist with tournament activities.

Those of you who wish to win a Massage Envy gift card can enter our contest simply by procuring sponsorships for this event. Keep an eye on Facebook and our new website for the details. The highest dollar value of sponsorships will win! If you wish to participate on calling on prospective sponsors or have identified a possible sponsor you would like someone to reach out to, feel free to ring me at 772-871-9289. The Luncheon Chair Person, this year, is our own Jeannette Weiss. We’re looking forward to her expertise to make this a grand success but as you know it takes more than one person to make our Friendship Luncheon

As you can see we have an active summer of preparation & celebration and a fun & exciting September and October. All leading to 2015, our 10th anniversary!

Friends in Pink was pleased to receive a donation from Keiser University’s Port St. Lucie Campus. The money was raised during a dress down day in which students are allowed to dress down by donating to the charity fund. Samantha Ratcliff, the charity liaison with Keiser University said “Students love being able to dress down while at the same time knowing they are helping a local charity.” Pictured are Keiser University staff members Leslie Haviland, Associate Director of Student Services; John Hooker, Director of Student Services; Samantha Ratcliff; and Dr. Tom Creola, Keiser Campus President.

This year and last, the St. Lucie County Fair Board honored Friends In Pink by naming us their charity for the fair. We had a lot of fun and opportunity to tell a lot of local people what Friends In Pink is all about. Thank you St. Lucie County Fair Board. This year was extra special because we were able to meet the “Miss Rodeo Florida” organization. These ladies are the official ambassadors and spokeswomen for the professional sport of rodeo. Led by Ms. Sandy Steinruck, their president, they are very supportive of our cause and are interested in doing a collaborative event in the future. 13

Taylor Anderson, with Kathy Harwood and myself. That young lady (14 years old) donated a substantial check to benefit our recipients and solicited others to do the same. We received over $1500 as a result of her fundraising efforts.

Volunteer of the Quarter

Marte’ McKeon and family

Marté

Despite a tough battle with breast cancer, Marte’ McKeon volunteers regularly for Friends in Pink. She volunteers regularly to pick up change that is dropped at our donation boxes at Turnpike Service Areas. We started with two and now we have four. They generate $3-5K a month. One bag of coins, which can be 2-3 boxes of coins, can weigh 20 pounds or more. One run generates at least 16 bags sometimes more. Lifting and carrying that much weight is no short order. To help her out, her family assists with these runs. At least one member goes with her to help 2 times a month. And they attend our volunteer meetings, including her husband Kevin That’s why they’re all “volunteer” of the quarter.
