Friends in Pink thanks YOU!

Thank you to our quiet supporters! Beginning in January and lasting through March of every year, a quiet group of people host some of the most significant events of the year, all to benefit Friends in Pink. These wonderful men and women, all members of private communities in our region, donate thousands of dollars from these events to Friends in Pink. In addition, many of them volunteer at our events and assist in running our organization throughout the year. Truly, we could never be as great a local citizen or do as much as we do for our recipients without them. These private events, created, managed and attended by their residents only, are hugely successful. Please take a moment from your day and reflect on the importance of these wonderful groups and how without them, Friends in Pink wouldn’t be here. Their generosity knows no bounds. We are grateful for them as they have faithfully and loyally walked arm in arm with Friends In Pink to help people survive breast cancer. You know who you are and Friends In Pink is forever indebted to your abundant generosity of spirit.

Have a swingin’ good time at the gala for Friends in Pink Be ready to swing to the sounds of the 1950s at the Friends in Pink Gala to benefit local breast cancer patients. The Gala will be an inaugural event as well as a celebration of the organization’s 10 year anniversary. Cheryl Caldwell, president of the Friends in Pink Board of Directors, is especially excited about the upcoming event. “This event will kick-off our 10 year anniversary and what a way to celebrate,” Caldwell said. “People love 1950s music, dancing and food. And this event will have all three. Be prepared to swing and twist the night away.” The Inaugural Friends in Pink Gala promises to be a swingin’ good time with ‘50s inspired cuisine, entertainment and atmosphere. Guests will to Professor Pennygoode’s Mighty Flea Circus and enjoy professional swing dance performances. Cuisine 256 will be serving up a delicious meal, finished off with a not-to-be-missed dessert station, including root beer float shooters, pineapple upside down cake, chocolate fondue, and more! The evening also features a silent auction. There will also be a raffle of a $1,000 piece of jewelry, donated by

Jewelry Design Studios in Jensen Beach. The winner of the raffle will have a choice of either a men’s Citizens watch and William Henry money clip or a Herman Weiss designed amethyst pendant or a Galatea designed hand carved pearl necklace or bracelet. Tickets for the raffle are $10 each or 3 for $25. The winner will be chosen at the gala on and notified by phone or email if they are not present at the event.

16

Tickets for the Gala are $100 and are all-inclusive. To purchase tickets to the event online, go to www. FriendsinPink.net or call 772-2843007. Volunteer of the Quarter

Margie Jimenez

Margie Jimenez is our Volunteer of the Quarter for winter 2015! Margie was selected for her dedication to Friends in Pink and the people we help. She, like so many of our volunteers, has been doing this for a long time! Margie’s first event was a Tapas extravaganza in 2011. She hasn’t missed a beat since. Always creative and inclusive. Bringing the Martin County community together to support Friends In Pink. From her “Cardio for the Cure” to her “Teeth Whitening Day of Beauty” which attracted folks from as far away as Indian River County, she’s never at a loss for great fun and profitable fundraising events. All this while managing a full schedule with her lovely daughter Isabella and family. The work Margie has performed on behalf of our recipients is always above and beyond with her signature $1,000,000 smile. Thank you, Margie for your hard work! 18

Plan for tax season

IRS tax tips for charitable contributions Charitable contributions made to qualified organizations may help lower your tax bill. The IRS has put together the following eight tips to help ensure your contributions pay off on your tax return.

6. Regardless of the amount, to deduct a contribution of cash, check, or other monetary gift, you must maintain a bank record, payroll deduction records or a written communication from the organization containing the name of the organization, the date of the contribution and amount of the contribution. For text message donations, a telephone bill will meet the record-keeping requirement if it shows the name of the receiving organization, the date of the contribution, and the amount given.

1. If your goal is a legitimate tax deduction, then you must be giving to a qualified organization. Also, you cannot deduct contributions made to specific individuals, political organizations and candidates. See IRS Publication 526, Charitable Contributions, for rules on what constitutes a qualified organization.

7. To claim a deduction for contributions of cash or property equaling $250 or more you must have a bank record, payroll deduction records or a written acknowledgment from the qualified organization showing the amount of the cash and a description of any property contributed, and whether the organization provided any goods or services in exchange for the gift. One document may satisfy both the written communication requirement for monetary gifts and the written acknowledgement requirement for all contributions of $250 or more. If your total deduction for all noncash contributions for the year is over $500, you must complete and attach IRS Form 8283, Noncash Charitable Contributions, to your return.

2. To deduct a charitable contribution, you must file Form 1040 and itemize deductions on Schedule A. 3. If you receive a benefit because of your contribution such as merchandise, tickets to a ball game or other goods and services, then you can deduct only the amount that exceeds the fair market value of the benefit received. 4. Donations of stock or other non-cash property are usually valued at the fair market value of the property. Clothing and household items must generally be in good used condition or better to be deductible. Special rules apply to vehicle donations. 5. Fair market value is generally the price at which property would change hands between a willing buyer and a willing seller, neither having to buy or sell, and both having reasonable knowledge of all the relevant facts.

8. Taxpayers donating an item or a group of similar items valued at more than $5,000 must also complete Section B of Form 8283, which generally requires an appraisal by a qualified appraiser. 20
