Four seasons in a day.
UK’s weather is nothing but unpredictable. You can experience the four seasons in just one day. It can be rainy, windy, cloudy, misty, sunny and hail storming within 24 hours. It is hard to find a garment that is adaptable to every kind of weather condition that is both functional and suitable for every person without compromising looking good. Coats are investment pieces: we wear them on every day, they get wet, they get hung on hooks, they are abused with biting winds, they are worn a lot.
It is all about Manchester.
Manchester was the main centre of the textile industry in the UK during the 19th century. Due to the “fast-fashion movement, the garment production has moved around the world and local craftsmanship skills have been deteriorating. That is what made MyCo’ think about the locals and how to give something back to the community. MyCo has vertical integration, it means that everything made is locally sourced, produced and distributed within a few miles from Manchester. As everyone work together in the same space, all the workers have the same conditions.
Ethical production.
All MyCo parts are carefully handmade by the best local craftsmen. The most skilled professionals are selected for each bit that has to be made, and that they really love what they are doing, as they are reflected in the quality of each garment. It is also made on demand and patterns pieces are customised and made from scratch from our professional pattern cutters. Techniques such as ultrasonic trimming, bonding and bench pressing are used in order to reduce the waste of materials to the minimum. This avoids overlabour and overstock, moreover, it reduce the waste of water and in consequence, minimises the carbon footprint.
Collaborations.
As the production is based in Manchester and it is the birthplace of many artists, MyCo wanted to reflect its urban culture by collaborating with some of them. Painters, Graffiti artists, musicians and everyone else who wants to join MyCo.mmunity can give their own vision of the city by designing the interchangeable linings of the coats.
Made of Ventile and upcycled fasteners.
Ventile, which is a 100% made of cotton was invented in Manchester back in the 30’s and it has been used for medical, military and work wear purposes. It is also weatherproof and windproof, which make it very resistant to extreme situations and ultimately durable. It also provides comfort, quietness and is highly breathable, which makes it comfortable even under the sun. The fasteners come from vintage military garments and army surpluses. They are long-lasting and ready to withstand extreme conditions.
Think climate.
MyCo are made to last. Clothes are not to be thrown away, as most of the fibres are very difficult to upcycle. By just extending the life of a garment, a big impact could be made to the environment. The promotion of a circular lifecycle of the garments is MyCo’s key issue. Washing the clothes in a lower temperature and less frequently will make them last longer. Also using natural soaps and drying it outside instead of tumble drying will reduce the negative environmental impacts. In order to extend the life of the coat, MyCo provides waxes on the website to reproof it and make it last for longer. There are also some tips about how to alter or mend any part of the coat.
Pass it on.
1.5 million tonnes of textiles go into the landfill every year in the UK. 9.513 garments every five minutes. The majority of these garments still has a long life span. They can always be reused, resold or given to the charities. MyCo is conscious about all the environmental impacts that a garment can have from the design until the end of its life. The pass-it-on campaign is about engaging customers into our sustainability project. Some day you may want to pass it to someone else and it would prolong its life. You can reuse it, recycle it or ultimately, pass it down. We promise that Myco will last a very long time.
