E x c l u si v e CHINESE BRUSH PAINTING 10th September, 10am – 3pm

NESS LANNEN Provoking memories of familiar places, Ness Lannen’s images create a sense of ease within the viewer. Originally from Manchester, she has lived in Cornwall since 1998 and trained as a surface pattern and textile designer before completing a degree in Fine Art. Exploring emotional responses to landscapes, Ness Lannen creates airbrushed, atmospheric land, sea and skyscapes using fluid acrylics and chalk pastel application with both dry brush and airbrush. Her work follows closely the processes involved in printmaking; the images are flat and mostly devoid of texture. With the exception of Paynes grey, only primary colours and white are used and the paint is applied in layers, allowing colour to build on the canvas. Alongside the paintings are plein air sketches and sterling silver jewellery. Ness runs a variety of

workshops throughout the year including sketching on the coast path, jewellery and wedding ring making. For more information Ness can be contacted through her website. Ness’s paintings can be seen at Whitewater gallery Polzeath and jewellery is stocked at Wave 7 gallery. From August 10th – 16th, Ness will be exhibiting her work at Five – a group exhibition of artists and makers at the Padstow Memorial Hall.

NEW FINDS JASMINE MILLS Jasmine Mills is a recent graduate of Falmouth University, and is currently resident at Krowji Art Studios in Redruth. Her landscape paintings, inspired by her own imagination and memory, have an intriguing and almost fantastical quality, with the dark twist of lost figures, hidden characters and glimpses of movement in richly painted undergrowth. Her talent as a painter is matched squarely by her emerging talent as a curator, and this summer, with fellow artistcurators Eleanor Lee and Lillian Thomson, she organised a brilliant exhibition of work by other young artists at Enys House. www.jasminemills.co.uk

LILLIAN THOMSON Painter and printmaker Lillian Thomson is another Falmouth graduate and Krowji resident, who creates semi-figurative, semi-abstract works that hint at still life, landscape and portraiture. Inspired by her own unusual collection of possessions, she explores new ways to interpret and respond to simple objects including dolls, dried flowers and curious porcelain figures. Her beautiful colour work, and her eye for balancing studied observation with gestural abstraction, makes for a fascinating collection of works which are both familiar and disconcerting, in the very best way. www.lillianthomson.co.uk

With plenty of independent shops, craft markets and workshops as well as Cornwall’s largest creative hub, Krowji, it is a place not to be looked over. An up and coming town championing local art and contemporary Cornish culture, Redruth still proudly retains its history as a world-famous mining town that continues to draw in visitors from around the globe.

Vanessa Penrose Vanessa works with a variety of materials and processes these include: ceramic, painting, photography and printing. Her work presents a response to both the post-industrial landscape within which she lives and the materials and processes that she works with. Vanessa often works in an explorative way led by a curiosity for mark making, ‘happy accidents’ and developing narratives. In this way she develops unique hand made ceramic pieces alongside paintings exploring a sense of space and place.

inspirational space JULIA MILLS Inspired by the colours and forms found in Cornwall’s landscapes and seashores, Julia Mills is an artist who captures the essence of her local area in the distinctive medium of glass. In her shared workshop close to Newlyn Harbour, Julia harnesses the light, elements and natural forms from land to sea to create hand-made, contemporary glass artworks. In the middle of Newlyn’s thriving and iconic working harbour, she is not lost for regular inspiration from the sights and sounds of the fishing port and the everchanging light of the Mounts Bay coast. The constant shifting interface between the land and sea are recurring themes in her work. YEW TREE GALLERY Facing the Atlantic on the coast road to St Ives, this is the finest location in the gallery’s 46-year life span! Exhibitions of contemporary fine and applied art are often themed around the tenor of the times, or a conscious awareness of the natural world around us. Inimitable collage artist MARK HEARLD plays a significant role in the exhibition ‘ISLAND LIFE’ (8th September – 26th October). Fauna and flora of land and shore are predominant subjects in his fluid painting on paper and ceramic platters. Balancing these are carved seabirds and boxed constructions by ALEX MALCOLMSON, reflecting his Shetland upbringing and fascination with maritime life.

The rapid decline in some animal species is brought home through ROBINA JACK’s choice of imagery in her ceramic dishes and wooden panels. Sea and earth colours in SUE MARSHALL’s hand-dyed woven rugs and cushions hark back to her Scandinavian childhood. Delicately modelled animals and birds appear as flatbacks (in the old Staffordshire tradition) by TERRY SHONE. In contrast to a display of GUY ROYLE’s beautifully crafted silver & gold jewellery is a cabinet of contemporary sculptural jewels by BRONWEN GWILLIM made from recycled materials honed to the texture of smooth pebbles. The contemporary shapes and bold painterly design of NIGEL LAMBERT’s

slip decorated wood-fired earthenware pots bring added pleasure to every meal. Open Tuesday-Saturday (during exhibitions) 10.30am-5pm. Yew Tree Gallery, Keigwin, nr. E x c l u si v e VISIT LAMORNA COVE A stunningly beautiful cove in West Penwith, Lamorna Cove can be found at the end of a lush valley watered by a stream which runs down to the sea. Dotted with a few cottages, narrow lanes and an old inn, the cove is surrounded by cerulean seas and a small harbour. This small, naturally beautiful slice of Cornish coast is best known as the muse for PostImpressionist artist, Samuel John Lamorna Birch, who even took the place as his own name to differentiate from an artist of the same name who was also working around the same time. Lamorna Birch could often be found on the cliffs and rocks of Lamorna Cove, capturing the light, colours and atmosphere in his delicate paintings. Today, it is still popular with painters, potters, craftsmen and writers alike who have found solace and inspiration in this unique south coast gem.

Through the eyes of... Alex Yarlett A Cornish artist, en plein air, and their chosen location of inspiration… Firstly, tell us about your chosen location and why it inspires you… It is really hard to pick just one location from all of the incredible coastline that Cornwall has to offer, especially as each location inspires me in different ways: Swanpool, Padstow Estuary, Watergate Bay. But if I were to pick one, there’s a special place in my heart for St Michaels Mount. The Mount carries for me a boyhood nostalgia for the ancient castle in the middle of the ocean. Describe the sounds, smells and feelings you experience in your location… Marazion, and its coast, is rich with wonders that entrance all the senses. Stepping out at Marazion I’m often hit with the strong wind that brings the taste of salt and smell of seaweed. The atmosphere combines with the visual beauty of the place to instil a wonderful and nostalgic childlike happiness and an optimism that anything is possible. What colours do you like to use when painting your location? When on location I seek out the dominant colour that captures the essence of the day – whether that’s a pink, turquoise, green or blue. The colours I choose depend upon the day and my experience whilst out on location. What challenges do you face when conveying your location onto canvas? I never seek to capture a realistic photographic image of what is in front of me; instead I encounter the raw moment by engaging emotionally with my environment and then translating that instant into a painted story. The challenge of battling the elements adds to the sketching and painting experience – the challenge is simply to convey the emotions through the applied paint so as to share the experience with others. Finally, what do you love most about your location? I live in the tropics of Falmouth and love to paint out and about near my home, and so for me, Marazion and St Michaels Mount is a place that feels like I’m on holiday – even if just for the afternoon.

maker’s FOCUS MEL CHAMBERS ALCHEMY TILES al·che·my (noun) – “any seemingly magical process of transmuting ordinary materials into something of true merit.“ On the banks of the Helford River, Mel Chambers creates stunning tiles using an ancient technique that dates back to the 13th Century. Time, care, precision and soul go into each and every one of her stunning pieces and each one is entirely bespoke. Bringing to life this thousand-year-old technique of inlay tiles, or encaustic as its technically known, sees Mel carve each tile by hand from wet clay. Coloured slip is then inlaid on top to sink into the carved areas, once the slip dries, the tile is scraped back to reveal the image and script underneath. The tile is left to dry and then glazed and fired raw once, very slowly, over 3 days. Once the tile is removed from the kiln a stain is wiped over to highlight the crazing within the crackle glaze. The whole process for each tile takes a minimum of 2 weeks. The technique of inlay tiles goes back so far that they are unable to trace its true origin, but the technique really came into its own during the 13th Century. When rulers and kings weren’t fighting each other, they were glorifying themselves in palaces, churches and temples and what better way than to use a technique that would last centuries. Mel was trained in the techniques by Iris Milward of Poetry Tiles just before she retired in 2013. Mel has gone on not only to continue the ancient technique but to develop it further in new colours, designs and specializing in bespoke kitchens, bathrooms and fire places. Any shape, space, size and design can be tailored for from individual tiles to large areas like kitchens, bathrooms and fireplaces. Due to the intricate and multiple processes no tile can be replicated making each one bespoke, unique and held eternally in earth and time. She is also very proud to be part of the Made in Cornwall Scheme. After a rigorous testing by trading standards she achieved top marks and is part of an amazing and talented group of Cornish artisans creating genuine Cornish products. www.alchemytiles.com www.melchambers.com

ALFRED WALLIS 1855 - 1942 Born in 1855 in Penzance, Wallis spend most of his life working as a fisherman and his talents for painting weren’t discovered until 1928 by fellow artists Christopher Wood and Ben Nicholson. By then, Wallis was a rag and bone merchant. Using his memories of deep-sea fishing boats that were no longer in use as well as his direct, naïve approach, impressed and inspired Nicholson and Wood and the three became close friends. It was this friendship that helped catapult Wallis into the league of painters who were seen as the best in Britain at the time, and whose legacy still stands today. When asked why he painted, Wallis’ response was to keep himself company. In 1876, he had married Susan Ward, the love of his life. She was 20 years old and Wallis was 41, but despite the age gap it was Susan who died many years before Wallis in 1922. Whenever Wallis felt lonely, he would paint. The naïve term used for his work derives from this practice, as Wallis had never had any training or art lessons and was entirely self-taught. Whilst Alfred Wallis never became a rich man, even from his time painting, he did become part of a legacy that is still remembered today. Mostly, Wallis is a man that proves it is never too late to try anything new, simply for the fun of trying it. You can see some of Wallis’s artwork at Tate St Ives.

atishoo gallery Stuart Law - A Great escape art In 20 years of exhibiting his work in Cornwall Stuart has never met another artist selling Gyotaku – the Japanese art of printing using a real fish! Using fish caught by Cornish boats, each work is hand printed using acrylic paint on hand-made paper. Eyes and highlights are painted in gouache. When spring comes and his studio garden bursts into life, Stuart turns to watercolours. Reflecting his love of Japanese art, he floods the paper with colour, strong diagonals and fading backgrounds. To see his collection of Japanese inspired Gyotaku and flower paintings, exhibition dates and venues visit Stuart’s online gallery.
