Tamar Valley An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, it’s no wonder this valley, famous for its picturesque countryside scenes, traditional features and mining heritage landscape, is so popular with artists and galleries alike. The valley extends from the bustling city of Plymouth, meandering all the way to Launceston and Tavistock, weaving between the Devon and Cornwall border. The wide wooded river, dotted with ancient mines, Tudor houses, gardens and wildlife offers a tranquil place to reflect and explore.

limekiln gallery Celebrating over 10 years as the mainstay of contemporary art in South-East Cornwall, the Limekiln Gallery knows how to bring the best out of this wonderfully atmospheric corner of the county. In a beautiful riverside setting, the gallery’s four main exhibitions loosely follow the seasons, and feature the pick of sculpture and painting from the wider Tamar Valley area alongside a few exceptional imports. The very popular drawings and etchings by gallery co-owner Ley Roberts can always be found within. Rounding out the whole are collections of the finest local ceramics, glass, jewellery and printmaking as well as a friendly and warm welcome.

PENINSULA ARTS GALLERY Trevor Bell: Trans-Form 16 April to 26 May Featuring a selection of 11 monumental paintings from the 1990s and 2000s alongside a new sound score composed by Jamie Mills, ‘Trevor Bell: TransForm’ is the final exhibition Bell worked on before he sadly passed away in November. The exhibition is a partnership between Peninsula Arts and The Box, Plymouth. Curated by Joseph Clarke, director of the Anima-Mundi gallery in St Ives, it will be on display in the Peninsula Arts gallery from 16 April to 26 May. Described as ‘the last of the St Ives modernists’ and known for his large-scale, intensely

coloured canvases, Bell was born in Leeds in 1930. He moved to St Ives in 1955 where his presence, along with the likes of Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson and Peter Lanyon, gave British art an international reputation. When he held his first solo exhibition in London in 1958, Patrick Heron described him as ‘the best non-figurative painter’ of his generation. He went on to achieve fellowships, scholarships, commissions and awards. He also spent 20 years living and working as a Professor at Florida State University, USA. A series of events inspired by the exhibition will also

take place during April and May. These will include talks, yoga sessions and a newly commissioned dance cochoreographed and performed by Sarah Fairhall and Lois Taylor. NEW FINDS Mim Brigham Glass maker and recent Plymouth College of Art graduate Mim Brigham launched her career as one of an exclusive list of makers selected for the British Glass Biennale last year. Having also won the Devon Guild of Craftsmen Design Award, and been highly commended in the Contemporary Glass Society Review, she is swiftly establishing herself as one of the region’s most promising new makers. Her dazzlingly beautiful, award winning work is inspired by microscopic details found on the beaches of Cornwall where she lives and works, and takes inspiration from historical cane work and millefiori fusing. www.mbm-glass.com

Rachael Osborne Award winning silversmith Rachael Osborne is also a recent graduate of Plymouth College of Art, and now makes jewellery and sculptural tableware at her North Cornwall studio. Using various metals in their molten state, her techniques capture the unique beauty of their momentary fluidity, and her elegant work is inspired by the rugged textures and natural energy of the Cornish coast. Most fascinatingly, recent pieces she has created in silver and pewter include a percentage of shipwrecked Cornish tin, salvaged from a mid-18th century steamer that fell victim to high seas off the coast of Land’s End. www.rachaelosborne.co.uk By Mercedes Smith Fine Art Communications www.fineartcommunications.co.uk

ART WORLD GALLERY

Falmouth Vibrant, exciting and always full of quirky, unusual events, Falmouth is a hub of creativity. Whether you’re looking to experience national and historically renowned art or discover some upcoming talent, Falmouth is a fantastic blend of the old and new coming together. This thriving harbour is home to many museums and galleries as well as internationally themed restaurants, authentic bakeries and some fantastic vintage stores. It’s the perfect place to experience Cornwall’s unique, individual culture.

Art World Gallery is an independent, family run business. The gallery, established in 2000, has a reputation for a collection of some fine contemporary artists from France and Italy, many of whom are exclusive to Art World Gallery in the UK. Of course, no gallery in Cornwall would be quite complete without showing some exciting Cornish artists, among these are Peter Trotman, who fills his paintings with coastal houses, cranes and adding passing ships on the sea beyond; with Tony Forrest, who has already gained great success painting wild cats, has in more recent years turned his interest to painting the beautiful coasts of Cornwall, taking inspiration from the light on the water, wet sands and old boats. French artist, David Jamin, has been with the gallery for well over a decade; his work is strong, vibrant and filled with energy. David started with Art World Gallery as an unknown artist, yet sold to welcoming collectors right from the start and since then

he has become internationally acclaimed. Thomas Bossard, in Toulouse, has also been with the gallery for over a decade and is well known for his humour, encouraging us to never to let go of the child inside. These are just two of the gallery’s many French artists. Add to this, a wonderful selection of ceramics, sculpture, glass and jewellery, makes the gallery a real must to visit. Open - Mon-Sat 10.30am-5.30pm Closed - Sunday Art World Gallery, 62 Church Street Falmouth, TR11 3DS T: 01326 219323 E: info@artworldltd.com W: www.artworldltd.com Left: Des Fleurs Dans Les Cheveux by David Jamin. YEW TREE GALLERY Facing the Atlantic on the coast road to St Ives, this is the wildest and finest location in the gallery’s 46-year span! Exhibitions of contemporary fine and applied art in the two large rooms frequently focus on the natural world and its relevance in our modern life. Caroline Bailey’s powerful still-life and flower studies in ‘PRIMAVERA’ (8th April – 21st May) and the zinging colours in Debbie Prosser’s ceramics beneath gently moving mobiles by Peter Fluck give vitality to the main room. Willow-work by Norah Kennedy reminds us of the first leaves unfurling in April, while Laura Baxter’s mixed metal jewellery is based on plant motifs. The graphic decoration of Annie

Hewett’s tableware is echoed in Suzy Fasht’s atmospheric watercolours in the glasshouse where Reece Ingram’s small sculptures of birds and animals bask in the sunlight. In the garden are impressive ‘standing stone’ sculptures by Helen Nock, and also her small tables and birdbaths. From 3rd June – 28th July ‘IN ARCADIA’ is curated by Miranda Leonard of The Restless Gallery. Imagined landscapes by printmaker Melvyn Evans; sculpted mythical figures by Meri Wells; fabulous furniture by Nicola Henshaw and narrative scenarios in Yolande Beer’s tableware are some of the exhibits that form an imagined Utopia. Intricate mosaics by

Emily Bainbridge and sculpture by Jitka Palmer with more by Helen Nock in the gardens. Open Tuesday-Saturday (during exhibitions) 10.30am-5pm. Yew Tree Gallery, Keigwin, nr.
