SPRING 2022 ISSUE 17 Spring is sprung, and what a joyful time of year it is. It’s the season when Cornwall comes alive, sloughing off its winter apparel and bursting with blossom and birdsong. In the art world, galleries throw open their doors for joyful exhibitions inspired by sunshine and new life. This Spring 2022 art guide offers up a selection of the best of these, from watercolours to oils, landscapes to abstracts, ceramics to textiles, not forgetting jewellery. Cornwall is teeming with artists, who find abundant inspiration in its seascapes. Many welcome visitors to their studios by appointment, especially at the end of May to coincide with the Open Studios Cornwall event. Use this free guide to plan art trails; who knows, you might discover a new favourite maker, and perhaps even treat yourself or a loved one to a special gift. OPEN STUDIOS CORNWALL 2022 From May 28 to June 5, the annual Open Studios event will see artists, designers and makers share curious studio spaces in beautiful places across Cornwall, from Marazion to St Minver, St Ives to Saltash and Penzance to Penwithick; in leafy villages, seaside settlements and wooded valleys; between granite gateposts, down driveways and along ancient footpaths. Artists of all kinds - painters, printmakers, potters, textile designers, sculptors and illustrators – will reveal where and how they work, what their rooms look like and what they need around them to feel creative. Curate your own art trail by following the distinctive orange ‘Os’ across the Duchy’s creeks, coves and coastlines, to discover, discuss and purchase their work. ON THE COVER June 11th by Viv Richards Throughout May, Whitewater Contemporary presents work by mixed media artist Viv Richards. Viv escaped a busy life in London, moving to Cornwall in 2017 to paint the beautiful Cornish coast. This new collection is comprised of 23 paintings, each made on separate days by the sea near her home on the north coast. Viv’s works express the tranquillity of life in the far west, and celebrate Cornwall’s vast skies, ocean views, and the sublime feeling of open space. Her images are built up in layers of collage, gouache, oil paint, and sometimes clay, paper pulp or felting wool. Accidental marks are an important part of her practice, and she

will often let the nature of her materials, and the effect of outdoor elements such as sun and rain on the surface of her work, dictate the outcome of each piece. Viv graduated from Central St Martins with a BA in jewellery design, and from West of England University with a BA in fine art. EBENEZER GALLERY, POLPERRO The Ebenezer Gallery is in Polperro’s main street and holds a long summer exhibition from April to October. This spacious old chapel exhibits work from some 50 members of East Cornwall Society of Artists Ltd, including paintings in acrylics, oils, pastels and watercolours as well as ceramics, wood turning, jewellery and stained glass. In the 19th and 20th centuries, Polperro captivated artists with its twin harbours, stone breakwaters, cobbled alleys and courtyards with time-worn steps leading to quaint, haphazard housing. Add the River Pol bubbling its way under ancient stone bridges, and a stunning coastal setting, and it’s small wonder this fishing village was so popular. An exhibition at Falmouth Art Gallery features paintings by artists from the UK, USA, Germany and the Netherlands. Work from public and private collections has been curated by Cornish art historian David Tovey, author of a two-volume history of the village as an art centre. POLLINATOR PATHMAKER If pollinators designed gardens, what would humans see? Find out when Pollinator Pathmaker, a climate positive living artwork, blooms at the Eden Project in time for May half-term. The permanent 55m-long artwork by Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg was grown from the seeds of 7,000 plants from 64 species, and is designed for both humans and pollinators – such as bees, moths, beetles and wasps - to engage with in late spring. Pollinator Pathmaker is a call to take action against the dramatic decline in pollinating insects due to habitat loss, pesticides, invasive species and climate change. The loss of a single species can mean the end of a plant species, but you can challenge this by planting your own pollinator-friendly garden space – even just a window box. WHITEGOLD CERAMIC ART TRAIL, ST AUSTELL Three new public artworks by internationally recognised ceramic artists are being installed in St Austell town centre to complete the exciting Whitegold Ceramic Art Trail. Aylmer Square will host Sandy Brown’s Earth Goddess, the UK’s tallest ceramic sculpture at 11.5m high (bigger than two double decker buses on top of each other!); David Mach’s Earthly Delights, a largescale ceramic mural featuring fragments of ceramics from everyday objects shared by local volunteers and residents, will overlook East Hill; and finally, a series of bespoke benches have been inlaid with recycled ceramic mosaic art by artist Susan Elliott, inspired by Cornwall’s myths and legends. Three years in the making, the trail comprises 18 public artworks celebrating

KERNOW ART COLLECTIVE THE OLD WORKSHOP, CHARLESTOWN The Old Workshop is a wonderful historic building next to the main car park at Charlestown, near St Austell. Converted from an old gunpowder store and extensively refurbished, it houses three very interesting businesses: The Craft Kiln: a showcase for Cornish Crafts, where you can meet the makers and purchase a unique handmade gift. Sail Loft Emporium: housing a fine array of antiques, collectables, vintage and retro items, with around 50 cabinets and stalls all under one roof. ART CREATIVES IN MYLOR The Art Creatives cooperative will be exhibiting in the idyllic St Mylor Church, Mylor Harbour from May 28 to June 4. NEW GALLERY, PORTSCATHO The New Gallery is the home of a society of artists founded in 1984, including some of the biggest names in contemporary art in Cornwall and beyond (the name reflects its move to larger premises in 2000). STATIONS OF THE CROSS Artist Zoe Cameron’s ten oil paintings depicting The Passion return to Truro Cathedral’s All Saints Chapel for Lent. The Stations of the Cross record Christ’s final journey and conclude with the image of the Resurrection. Nine pieces fit into the Cathedral’s stone arches, while hanging to the front of the Altar is Christ on The Cross, watched over by two angels. The paintings were completed between 2011 and 2013, and Zoe, who is based on The Lizard, describes as “significant” the decision to show them in the wake of the pandemic. THE CORNISH COAST AS GLASS After discovering that seaweed was used in glassmaking as a flux – a substance that lowers the melting temperature of another substance - West Cornwall artist Abigail Reynolds spent the summer of 2019 gathering kelp from her local beaches. She dried it, turned it into a powder, combined it with sand from the same beaches and melted it in a furnace. The resulting work is the Cornish coast quite literally made glass. See it in the exhibition Flux, on show at Kestle Barton, Manaccan from April 9 to June 12 (open Tuesday to Sunday, 10.30am to 4.30pm); and at Kresen Kernow (the Cornish Archive) in Redruth. There, Abigail has unveiled a permanent piece commissioned by Cornwall Council: Tre, a 4m-high window in the reference library. It is free to view during the archive’s opening hours: 10am to 4pm, Tuesday to Saturday.

Anchor Studio, birthplace of the Newlyn School of Painting, was removed from the Heritage At Risk Register in 2021 following a lengthy restoration. The studio was purpose-built in 1888 on a site overlooking Newlyn harbour for Stanhope Forbes (1857 -1947), who used it for more than 60 years. Forbes and his wife Elizabeth ran the Newlyn School at Anchor until 1940, attracting many students who went on to become distinguished artists, including St Ives Modernist John Wells, who lived and worked at Anchor from 1947 until his death in 2000. The studio was gifted to the Borlase Smart John Wells Trust in 2002, but by 2019 much of the slate roof, timber frame and cladding needed urgent repair or replacement, resulting in the studio being added to the Heritage At Risk Register. “We are delighted Anchor is once again in use as a studio,” said trust manager Chris Hibbert. “It now includes accommodation, making it especially suited to visiting artists.” ------------------------------------------www.bsjwtrust.co.uk

The Penwith Gallery in St Ives has unveiled a new walk-on steel-framed glass roof, constructed and installed by local fabricators InSteel and funded by generous donations - including one from sculptor Tom Leaper, creator of the Newlyn Fisherman memorial. The roof forms part of the continuing upgrade of the former pilchard packing factory, which now boasts a sculpture courtyard and archive study centre as well as three public galleries, artists’ studios and a print workshop. MORVAH SCHOOL HOUSE Kathryn Campbell is a recent graduate of the Newlyn School of Art’s Mentoring Programme, a landmark course for professional artists that has turned out a succession of talent in recent years, as well as some excellent art shows. Kathryn places human characterisation at the forefront of her portraiture. “Painting family, friends and my own portrait allows me the imaginative interpretation of known faces,” she says. PENLEE HOUSE GALLERY & MUSEUM, PENZANCE Built in 1865 as the home of the Branwell family, Penlee House is home to many paintings by members of the Newlyn School. Until May 14: Jewels in the Crown: 25 Years of Collecting Since undergoing major refurbishment in 1997, Penlee House has become one of the nation’s leading regional museums and has been described as “the jewel in the crown of Penzance”. This exhibition shows how its collections have developed, through fine and decorative art, social history, photography and archaeology. From May 25: Walter Langley (1852 – 1922) Born in Birmingham, Langley is known as the “pioneer of the Newlyn School”, as he was the

first of the artists to settle in the village in 1882. Although an accomplished painter in oils, Langley painted mainly in watercolour, often on a large scale. YEW TREE GALLERY, MORVAH The exhibition Eastertide heralds a spring awakening at Yew Tree Gallery after a dormant few months. ST IVES SOCIETY OF ARTISTS MARTIN JOHN FOWLER Martin travels extensively around Britain’s coastal areas, capturing the natural world and the towns and harbours that have a deep-rooted relationship with the sea. He can be typically found interpreting and capturing Cornwall’s wild and bustling coastal areas, immersing himself in the elements and life of the community. Martin was born and raised in the mining towns of South Yorkshire but has spent much of the last 20 years in Cornwall, and as a result, his rich and vivid works have gained significant recognition amongst Cornwall’s artistic communities. He studied painting and printmaking in Sheffield gaining

a BA(Hons) in Fine Art, and has exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally, in solo and mixed exhibitions. His bold colour palette and fluid style depict an intense sense of dynamism in his subjects from windswept, rugged landscapes to busy harbours docked with fishing vessels. The Prevailing Sense Change collection is an ongoing project to capture the change in working ports from personal childhood memories to the present day. MARKET MAKERS, LISKEARD Liskeard’s Market Makers project launched its first arts and crafts classes in early spring. This programme of practical skills classes is designed to support residents of Liskeard who aren’t currently in work, and aims to promote their wellbeing, confidence, skills and prospects. It will help participants develop their aspirations in employment, education and enterprise. The inaugural classes in watercolour painting, led by local artist Shari Hills, attracted a lively cohort of learners with a diverse range of interests and experience – from adept amateurs to absolute beginners. The programme has since expanded to include printmaking with Sian Bush, as well as wood-crafting and soft fabrics. Classes are free and take place each week at Liskeard’s Public Hall. OUTDOOR ART COURSES The School of Outdoor Art launches a new series of sustainably-minded, off-grid immersive courses in the rural wilds of west Cornwall. Courses are designed for intimate groups of up to six people and are hosted in the dedicated art field at The Croft using the POD Studio, devised by school founder Sian Blunt for individual art practice.
