SUMMER ISSUE 10 2018

H

ello and welcome to our summertime edition of Art 2018. This issue celebrates our 10th Art guide, to hit Cornwall and what an amazing ten issues it has been. In the beginning we started with a handful of great galleries, now we work with over sixty of Cornwall’s galleries throughout the year to bring you the best there is of art, craft and more. Summer is a time to celebrate all that is beautiful about Cornwall, from the dancing pink thrift dotting the cliffside to the blossoming gorse bushes and cerulean seas. Watching these marvellous colours blend into the warm oranges, yellows and reds of autumn, sprinkled with the deep purples of Cornwall’s blackberry bushes, is an amazing sight to behold. Colours which so many of our creatives are inspired by daily. In our tenth issue we’re bringing to you a season of stunning artwork, amazing events and inspirational colours! Oll an gwella All the best,

Editor of Art.

THE BYRE The Byre gallery on the edge of the village of Millbrook in southeast Cornwall exhibits stunning works of design-led craft and contemporary art by established and emerging makers and artists from throughout the UK. The Byre is open three times a year with exhibitions held in spring, summer and at Christmas; the gallery is a mustvisit destination for all lovers of fine art and contemporary craft in ceramics, glass, jewellery, metals and textiles. Tracey Falvey, Kerry Harding, Jill Hudson, Jill Holland, Remon Jephcott, Pauline Lee, Katie Lowe, Catriona Mackenzie, Nicola Mosley, Loraine Rutt, Ruth Shelley, Lucy Spink, and Libby Ward. NEW FINDS KINSLEY BYRNE Kinsley Byrne is a maker of unique objects that have really been turning heads on the art and interiors scene this year. He studied furniture making at Leeds College of Art and Design, with placements at the Ecole Boulle in Paris, and now works full time from his studio in West Cornwall. His beautifully crafted vessels, lighting and furniture have a compelling sculptural quality, and are hand carved from bleached, charred and ebonised oak, English ash, American black walnut, and more recently bronze, in elegant shapes which evoke a sense of mystery and the unknown. www.kinsleybyrne.com

HUGH WEST Ceramicist Hugh West studied at Hereford School of Art & Design, and later Redruth School of Art, before setting up his own pottery studios in Cornwall and La Borne in France. Already well known for making porcelain ceramics in a palette of soft blues and greens, he has ventured this year into a fascinating collection of experimental new works in stoneware. These deliciously textural, striking black works are thrown on the wheel before being altered by hand, and enhanced with touches of red clay and high gloss glaze - details which give a brooding, almost volcanic quality to each form. www.hughwest.com By Mercedes Smith Fine Art Communications www.fineartcommunications.co.uk

A GLIMPSE AT ROBERT BORLASE SMART In 1913, at the age of 32, Robert Borlase Smart arrived in St Ives to study under the country’s leading seascape painter at the time, Julius Olsson. With almost limitless energy and an abundance of enthusiasm, Smart immersed himself into St Ives, both artistically and communally. Whilst swiftly rising through the artist ranks to become a driving force of the colony in the years between the wars, promoting St Ives artists across the country, to serving on the Town Council, acting as leader of the Sea Scouts and serving in the Home Guard, Smart worked relentlessly propel St Ives as an artistic hub to wider society. Ultimately it was Borlase’s love of the ocean that saw him professionally excel. His widely respected marine landscapes are full of all the

movement and striking turbulence seen in the restless Cornish seas. In 1934 he published, ‘The Technique of Seascape Painting’ – to this day the book is regarded as being the standard work on the topic. Borlase died in 1947, today is memory and works are still celebrated across Cornwall’s artistic societies and galleries. For many, he was the personification of the all that St Ives, as an area of artistic notability, stood for. Borlase Smart: A Passion for the Sea 15th September – 17th November will be showing at Penlee House Gallery. INSPIRATIONAL SPACE EMILY NIXON

E

mily Nixon’s studio and showroom occupies the middle floor of the historic White’s Warehouse on Foundry Square in Hayle. This Victorian building, was sympathetically restored in 2000. Exposed granite walls, lime rendering and ancient oak flooring add to the charm and interest of this fabulous open plan studio. An eclectic mix of antique and retro furniture showcase

the covetable collection of jewellery on display here. The inspiration of Emily’s designs can be found throughout the studio; dried kelp, smoothed pebbles and knobbly shells scatter her work bench alongside glittering trays of diamonds and sapphires. Combining sea worn textures with precious gem stones has created her signature, award winning identity and attracted worldwide acclaim.

This summer a range will be launched in New York and can regularly be seen in exhibitions around the UK. Working from her bench a stone’s throw from Hayle Towans, however far the success of her designs take her it is her enduring love for Cornwall that will keep providing the inspiration for these exquisite celebrations of our coastline.

ROBINA JACK’s decorated ceramic dishes focus on schooners and

desert islands, whilst ESTHER SMITH’s metal automata are full of humour. GINA COWEN’s seaglass jewellery glows and GUY ROYLE’s silver & gold jewels are a constant joy. ARTIST’S FOCUS

SUE READ In a lofty barn studio, Cornish artist Sue Read captures the untameable beauty of the North Cornwall coast. From taking her first ‘en plein air’ inspirations to creating something totally reflective of real Cornwall in her work back at the studio. I feel a deep connection to the landscape of my native North Cornwall and have a love of being in water, surfing and wild water swimming. The euphoric feeling of water is imprinted in my memory and with the fleeting glimpses of light through the ever-changing skies, I love to create conversations in paint. The North Coast can be pretty wild and my work often depicts the ‘elements in motion’.” Working in acrylics and more recently oils, Sue has been enjoyed the recent experimentations she’s been taking in her pieces to convey the excitement and immediacy of a moving landscape.

“I sometimes work outside and sometimes on unstretched canvas,” she explains, “but I always finish a painting in the studio. I love the more undiscovered viewpoints rather than the traditional picture postcard.” Whilst Sue’s colour palette is vibrant and varied, capturing light delicately in the clouds and vast skies, her oceans are excitable, and her coastlines filled with blossoming hedgerow. From the quaint may flowers of Lundy Bay to the windblown waves of Widemouth Bay. “I particularly love to paint the untamed stretch of coast south of Widemouth Bay,” Sue describes, “it’s diverse and extreme, but my heart lies with Northcott Mouth, my closest, perfect wave.” Discover more of Sue Read’s work at www.sueread.co.uk and on her listing (No. 56)

JILL ROUSSEAU Jill Rousseau has been involved in ceramic based galleries for 24 years and has worked with some of the best ceramists on the national and the international stage; both in the South of England and France. With the partnership of her husband Michel, her latest gallery “Jill Rousseau Gallery” opened in Bideford, Devon, in early 2016.

The gallery, although small, features work by up to 50 artists, ceramists and jewellers selected countrywide at any one time, and the vast majority of makers are exclusive to Jill within Devon. It also features three showcases a year: in April, July and September, featuring guest makers as well as in house artists. She has a continual

“wish list” of makers which grows longer annually as she discovers new talent! The gallery is open from 10-5pm Monday to Friday and 10-4pm on Saturday. Evening and Sunday opening is available by prior arrangement. 3 Cooper St, Bideford EX39 2DA
