Exclusive 01 | Winifred Nicholson: Liberation of Colour Falmouth Art Gallery | 24th June - 16th September This summer Falmouth Art Gallery is one of only three venues in the UK, and the only South West venue, to host an exhibition of Winifred Nicholson’s work, Liberation of Colour. Curated by the artist’s grandson Jovan Nicholson the exhibition showcases a selection of Winifred’s work from her career.

02 | Shelley anderson Lighthouse Gallery | 14th September - 12th October Bronze sculptor and master craftsman, Shelley Anderson, will be exhibiting his new work at the Lighthouse Gallery from the 14th September to the 12th October. Anderson’s unique and extraordinary sculpture work epitomises Newlyn’s maritime culture and will later go on to tour across the South West.

03 | NORTHERN LIGHTS & SOUTHERN STARS Yewtree Gallery | 2nd September - 30th October As well as his distinctive collages, the innovative Yorkshire artist Mark Hearld shows a collection of slip decorated platters in this autumn exhibition. Equally fascinating are the wood carvings and wall-hung constructions (all connected with seafaring) by Alex Malcolmson, Terry Shone’s ceramic ‘flatbacks’, Angie Lewin’s inimitable prints of coastal plants, Robina Jack’s and David Garland’s colourful pottery and Guy Royle’s jewels. Open Tues-Sat 10.30 – 5pm.

SUMMER 2017 04 | ST IVES SUMMER SHOW AND SCULPTURAL CERAMICS SHOW Porthminster Gallery | Until 3rd September 2017 The award-winning Porthminster Gallery celebrates its tenth summer in St Ives with two “must-see” selling shows: Firstly, the summertime delights of St Ives and Cornwall from the unique perspectives of eight established artists; and secondly, a fascinating review of contemporary sculptural ceramics, with works by eight international names. Plus, a changing display of artworks by major post-war St Ives and British artists.

05 | Drawn to the valley Theatre Royal | Until 16th September An art collective consisting of around 150 member based in the Tamar Valley area who aim to bring their area of natural beauty to life through art. They are holding a Printmakers Exhibition in the gallery at the Theatre Royal with around 40 artists showing their pieces. From 2nd - 10th September, artists will be opening their doors for Open Studios 2017, where people will be able to see the artists at work and get the chance to buy one off, or limited edition pieces.

06 | John Armstrong: Dream and Reality Penlee House Gallery | 16 September - 18 November The first major survey of his work since 1975 this exhibition examines the diverse range of work produced by this intriguing artist. Armstrong studied briefly at St John’s Wood School of Art but was essentially self-taught. Although his paintings show the influence of Surrealism, Armstrong was never a Surrealist; instead he forged a very personal style that confronted conventional ideas and beliefs with a blend of ironic wit and personal symbolism.

NEW FINDS Shelly Tregoning Having graduated with a BA in Fine Art from University College Falmouth in 2011, painter Shelly Tregoning has been quietly developing her outstanding talent, and an impressive body of work, at her studio at Helston’s Cornubian Arts & Science Trust. Her wonderfully disconcerting oil on linen ‘non-portraits’ contrast the physicality of human form with the fragilities revealed in the details of human gesture. As a relatively new artist taking a highly distinctive creative path, Tregoning has already been selected for the National Open Art Competition, RWA exhibitions and prestigious Threadneedle Prize Exhibition, and is certainly one of Cornwall’s, and the UK’s, most promising painters. www.shellytregoning.net

Sally Tully West Cornwall based ceramicist Sally Tully’s handthrown ceramics are alluring on many levels, both visually and in terms of their wonderfully tactile shapes and textured surfaces. Skilled in ‘slip resist’ glazing and a variety of other texturally intriguing techniques, she has an impressive talent for Ruku, a process by which newly fired, still hot ceramics are placed in a container of combustible materials - including horse hair, feathers and seaweed gathered from the Cornish landscape - that ignite and imprint their shape and colour on the pottery’s surface. Particularly desirable are her copper matt pieces, which are swathed in a rainbow of incidental, flame imprinted colour. www.westcountrypotters.co.uk/gallery/sally-tully By Mercedes Smith Fine Art Communications www.fineartcommunications.co.uk

David Jamin has been with the gallery for over 13 years; his work is strong, vibrant and filled with energy. David started with the gallery as an unknown artist, yet sold to welcoming collectors right from the start, and since then he has become internationally acclaimed. Thomas Bossard is well known for his humour, encouraging us to never to let go of the child inside. These are just two of their French artists. Cornish artists Simon Wilde and Rachel Damerell are abstract artists; Simon’s paintings are spiritual and calming with a jewel like pallet, Rachel’s are atmospheric and often referred to as “Turner like”, having great depth, yet soft and gentle. Add to this, a wonderful selection of ceramics, sculpture, glass and jewellery, and it makes the gallery a real must to visit.

aRTist’s FOCUS SHELAGH SPEAR Influenced by the distant orient, ancient medieval manuscripts and the magical world of folk art Shelagh Spear’s work is rendered in simple Cornish clay. Her whimsical figures are fast becoming collectors’ items as people fall in love with their gentle fairy-tale feel. Shelagh explains “My figures are a personal response to the human condition. They reflect what I see, maybe subverted or taken a stage further...” Growing up in Cornwall her passion for ceramics began at an early age watching her brother William who was also a potter in

Falmouth. “I saw, at first hand, piles of mud converted into fabulous pots. It`s that magical alchemy of the firing process; what starts out as a lump of mud, albeit rather special mud, gets converted in the kiln into artefacts that will long outlast their maker.” Shelagh’s own work uses Raku clay from St Agnes which she fires to 1215°C.

Shelagh has recently moved and is converting an old outbuilding into new workshop. “Curiously it`s located just over the wall from where I did my ceramics degree at Falmouth campus. I haven`t done “Open Studios” for decades, but maybe I`ll do it next year to celebrate my new work space!” It seems life has come full circle.
