25 years ap Tamar This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Tamar Valley’s status as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. With its picturesque rivers including the 61-mile-long River Tamar, striking sloping banks, gorges, rich wildlife and woodland greenery, the Tamar Valley has, throughout the ages, been a constant allure for mankind. Since the 1960’s, there had been calls for Tamar Valley to be made a designated AONB site, but it wasn’t until 1995 that the area, comprised of Tamar, Tavy and Lynher, was finally given the protective status. A unique archaeological makeup of rich minerals and metals once saw the Tamar Valley as a prominent hotspot for the Cornwall and West Devon mining industry, and mines have been discovered that date as far back as the Bronze Age. It once held Europe’s largest mine for copper extraction, the Devon Great Consols. When the copper lode began to run out in the late 19th century, mine owners began to produce arsenic to satisfy a demand for pesticide in American cotton crops. Today, huge slag heaps of arsenic are still present in the valley, most reclaimed by the surrounding heath but still fenced off and well away from the valley’s plentiful walking, cycle and horse-riding trails that meander throughout the land. The abundance of Tamar Valley’s mining prominence saw it listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006. However, it’s not just the Tamar Valley’s geological and industrial prowess that make it such a notable landscape and today its abandoned mines serve a much different role as a place of residence for one of the UK’s rarest mammals – the horseshoe bat. With just 5,000 horseshoe bats left in the country, their populations are largely restricted to the South West of England and South Wales. Named after their strangely shaped noses, it was discovered in the early 2000s that a number of horseshoe bat females had made an old mining shaft in the Tamar Valley their summertime home for breeding. Since the discovery, the AONB have been working hard to keep the colony’s numbers up, which includes protecting the valley’s natural habitats such as hedgerows and woodlands. The Tamar’s reputation as the border between Devon and Cornwall has seen its fair share of strife over the last several millennia. It’s earliest status as a border realm between the two counties occurred sometime around 936, when the current King of England and former King of the Anglo-Saxons, Athelstan declared it as such from the east bank of the River Tamar. During the 11th century, several villages north of Launceston were transferred to Devon and it wasn’t until 1966 when the county boundary was restored to the Tamar and these villages transferred back to Cornwall. When exploring the river and its surrounding sites, the are many bridges and crossing links that connect the two counties, including Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s world-renowned Royal Albert Bridge at Saltash. The oldest bridge of the River Tamar is Horsebridge, built in 1437.
ppreciating Valley In celebration of appreciating 25 years of Tamar Valley, Bere Brewery, based in the valley has created a new ale that pays homage to their homeland. The first up is a new light and hoppy blonde ale, titled ‘Ale ONB’ (Ale of Outstanding Natural Beauty). Named by Ben Dancer, the Planning Officer for the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site and Tamar Valley AONB, the ale is produced using 100% Tamar Valley hops, grown on the brewery’s Bere Alston site. Having launched towards the end of the June, ‘Ale ONB’ is on sale at Bere Brewery while stocks last, so get in quick if you’re keen to taste this bright, sparkling and refreshing summertime beer for yourself. In Launceston, Cornwall, Monarch Liqueurs have long been inspired by the Tamar Valley in their spirits and as such are the creators of the award-winning Tamar Tipple range, comprising of rum, gin, vodka and whiskey liqueurs. Headed by Cliff and Elizabeth L’Estrange West, the duo are passionate when it comes to capturing the essence of the valley and have been busy combining all the fruits of the Tamar Valley’s rich hedgerows to produce a delicious new gin liqueur, named Tamara by Liskeard local Ann Snell after a competition for suggestions was held throughout June. Tamara is now available from Homeleigh Garden Centre in Launceston and Bude, Roots & Vines in Tavistock and online via the Monarch Liqueur website. Both drinks will also be available at The Tamar Valley Centre. Whether it’s a taste of Tamar you’ll be enjoying this summer, or a walk through its enchanting woodlands and alongside its mythical rivers, it’s clear that this spectacular slice of the South West was given its AONB declaration for reasons that are just as prominent today. Here’s to another 25 years protecting this thriving slice of iconic countryside. For more information about the Tamar Valley AONB you can visit www.tamarvalley.org.uk and if you’re interested in purchasing your own bottle of Tamara you can visit www.monarchliqueurs.co.uk or for ‘Ale ONB’ www.berebrewery.co.uk

Home Comforts Compiled in just a few short weeks, The Comfort Cookbook is a wonderful resource born out of adversity. With the closure of the entire hospitality sector just before Easter, one of Cornwall’s most important industries came to an immediate, grinding halt. Lucy Studley, who has worked in and with the industry for over 15 years, recalls the initial shockwave. “I was a Restaurant Manager for several years, so I know first-hand how hard people in hospitality work. Now, as a communications specialist for food and drink businesses, I found myself talking to clients every day who were just heartbroken at having to close their doors at the start of the summer season – it amounted to a collective cry of anguish. Everyone spoke of the overriding importance of saving lives, but financially they were on a knife-edge. I worried a lot about the mental health of people in the sector.” Recognising the need to create a positive focal point and to raise money for the most vulnerable workers, Lucy came up with an idea. “I wanted to do something to help,” she explained, “to create a positive story at this dark time and to help financially support staff who face hardship.” The recipients of this help would be Hospitality Action, a national charity which supports workers and who would be able to disperse any funds raised through its Covid-19 Emergency Fund. Lucy teamed up with two other talented women with a similar passion for the culinary scene in the West Country; Gabriella Dyson, Editor of The Maverick Guide, and food stylist and photographer Ali Green. The collaborators pledged to create a “beautiful digital cookbook to inspire comfort in adversity.” Donating their time and skills for free, they also committed to make the publication available to all through the JustGiving platform, simply asking people to give what they can to Hospitality Action in this time of financial hardship. A string of chefs from Cornwall and Devon came onboard, keen to donate their home-cooking hacks. Naturally local seafood is featured heavily, with inspiration from the likes of Nathan Outlaw, Paul Ainsworth, Ben Tunnicliffe, Michael Caines and Jude Kereama. Those with a sweet tooth are also in for a treat, with irresistible recipes from Emily Scott, Chris Eden and Ben Prior amongst others. The digital download includes a directory of local suppliers selling their wares online to help readers source ingredients. The book also features guides to foraging, growing your own fruit and vegetables and making the most of store cupboard spices. There are also indulgent tips for matching desserts with sweet wines, and insider guides to the region’s burgeoning craft beer and cider scenes. Creating the book was a huge challenge in these unprecedented times. Food stylist and photographer Ali Green cooked many of the recipes herself after sourcing the ingredients from small local stores as part of her weekly shops. “When these two talented women approached me to be a part of this cookbook I didn’t hesitate,” recalls Ali. “I couldn’t think of a better way to bring comfort to everyone than through their stomachs! Shooting the cookbook was a challenging and nourishing experience that has given me great joy, a rounder belly, and a welcome distraction from the current struggles we are all facing.” Not surprisingly the book was an immediate hit. With its combination of accessibility and affordability, beautiful design and inspirational content, it has quickly become a sought-after resource for lovers of West Country food and drink. At the time of writing The Comfort Cookbook has raised nearly £5,000 for Hospitality Action. Mark Lewis, Chief Executive of Hospitality Action, said: “We are hugely grateful to the team behind this project and all the chefs who have supported them in this wonderful initiative.” The Comfort Cookbook is available to download when making any donation, large or small, to Hospitality Action via the project’s JustGiving page. The book has been co-authored by Lucy Studley and Gabriella Dyson and published by The Maverick Guide, with food styling, photography and design by Ali Green Photography. www.justgiving.com/fundraising/comfort-cookbook
Dogs and Cornish beaches - all you need to know Earlier this year, Cornwall Council made the happy announcement that they were going to reduce the time that dogs are banned from some Cornish beaches. They also wanted to make the rules simpler and easier to follow. Here, Victoria Carpenter from Dog Friendly Cornwall explains everything you need to know about the new rules on dog beach bans in Cornwall… Cornwall has more than 300 beaches, most come under the control of Cornwall Council, and in recent years, just over 40 beaches had regulations banning dogs from beaches during the summer season. Previously, the dates varied a little, some bans started on Easter Day, others on April 30th for example, and the bans ran until around 30th September. Now, Cornwall Council has changed the regulations. From April 2020, beach ban regulations were simplified and harmonised. Restrictions are now in place only in July and August, except on beaches with Blue Flag status where they will apply for four and a half months. The hours of the day when beach bans apply has also been reduced. Previously many beaches had bans running from 7am to 7pm. Now bans will be enforced from 10am to 6pm during July and August. These new restrictions will apply to 41 beaches and will stay in place for three years unless reviewed. In a nutshell: The dog beach bans will all run from 1 July to 31 August (two months) between 10:00 to 18:00 hours daily. Except where a beach has Blue Flag status in place, when restrictions will apply for longer, from 15th May- 30th September (four and a half months) between 10-6pm. There is an exception for Porthchapel Beach near Land’s End where current restrictions will be lifted, as requested by the private beach owner. The decision follows the largest-ever consultation response, with over 13,128 replies, 78% from residents and 19% from visitors. New signs will be created underlining the responsibilities of dog owners. Council officers will monitor the effect of these changes, and it is proposed that a review take place following the 2020 summer period in order to assess their impact. A list of Cornish beaches that have dog bans from 1st July to 31st August (two months) between 10:00 to 18:00 hours daily is available by visiting www.dogfriendlycornwall.co.uk . This applies except where a beach has Blue Flag status in place, when restrictions will apply for longer, from 15th May to 30th September. CURIO SPIRITS No doubt the lockdown was difficult for many businesses, but for distiller, William TylerStreet of Curio Spirits, there was no slowing down. He used the time to re-strategise, make new connections and sales avenues and he’s made a new product. Curio Hard Seltzers are low alcoholic, low calorie sparkling waters with natural flavours. William has been researching on this since last year and found that consumers are desiring alternatives to higher ABV drinks and he’s made them gluten free and vegan friendly, giving mass appeal. Another celebration for Curio Spirits is a listing of their Cardamom Vodka on the drinks menu at 54 of the iconic Revolution Bars across the
country, beating 100’s of vodkas because of its smoothness and crisp fresh citrus flavour. Another accolade was a listing in the main catalogue at Matthew Clark, a national drinks wholesaler with over 200 years experience. William said ‘There’s no doubt that times have been challenging, but making a few changes has been really positive to us such as, making a big push on our online shop offerings, making new connections in the industry because we’ve had the time to do so’. His other brand, Coyaba Rums was imported to Hong Kong recently and he’s working with cocktail masters from one of the top 18 bars in the world. Not bad from a family distillery
on the Lizard Peninsula during a pandemic! See listing 23 in the Taste section for Coyaba Rums.

Eat out to Help out August marks the start of the government’s ‘Eat Out to Help Out’ campaign, a scheme where registered restaurants can offer a 50% discount on menu items and non-alcoholic drinks on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays between the 3rd August to the 31st August. There’s a maximum of a £10 discount per diner and is for eating and drinking inside the establishment. Businesses need to be registered to the campaign and have been doing so all across the country. The initiative can apply to pubs, restaurants, cafes and bars, but all must have signed up. For those in Cornwall eager to see which establishments are registered, a government website has been created where all you need to do is enter your postcode to see which venues are offering the discount within a two-mile radius of your postcode. Sustainable Cornish food delivered to your door In Cornwall’s quest to keep its local producers going during this difficult time, awareness has been raised across the coast for local fishermen who will have been hit hard by the coronavirus outbreak. As spring and county’s peak season typically get underway, it’s a busy time for the boats, but with lockdown and social distancing regulations keeping many restaurants and food outlets closed, Cornwall’s fishermen and fish mongers have been resorting to alternative methods to keep their local areas fed well on sustainable, locally caught seafood. To encourage more people that ever to support local, sustainable fishermen, the Cornwall Good Seafood Guide, a Cornwall Wildlife Trust Project, have set up a comprehensive list of seafood suppliers offering sales and delivery during lockdown. You can also find a range of simple, sumptuous recipes harnessing Cornish fish. Many fishermen and fish sellers have found a surge in local appreciation for sustainable seafood landed in Cornwall. Now, a traditional approach that dates back to Cornwall’s earliest roots has seen a reawakening of Cornwall’s love for good, affordable, sustainable and local seafood, as many fishermen are now selling direct and delivering in local catchment areas. As the Cornwall Good Seafood Guide’s list expands, the site has received thousands of visits and click through since its launch on the 12th March. The Guide’s list success has meant that businesses such as Fish For Thought have seen a dramatic increase in support and public engagement in the appreciation for locally caught, sustainable Cornish seafood, as owner and director Paul Trudgian explains, “The levels of engagement, positivity and support for our business and the amazing fishermen we work with has been humbling. I am so proud of the way our customers and our team have responded to this unprecedented crisis and I am increasingly optimistic that many more people will join our Seafood Revolution, and demand for sustainable British seafood in the future.” As online sales and deliveries to the public for local fishermen and businesses everywhere increase, it’s imperative that we all still keep in mind the importance shopping locally and sustainably can have on our local environments and economies. To check out the CGSG’s list of sustainable fish delivery services near you, visit www.is.gd/lockdownfishcornwall Be sure to also check out the Cornwall Good Seafood Guide on social media via Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for recipes, updates and news.

Electric-Powered Wine Deliveries Keeping Cornish Town Afloat Residents of St Ives and visitors to the town will be able to enjoy uninterrupted and sustainable wine deliveries direct to their doors this summer, courtesy of Scarlet Wines’ fully electric transport service. Owner Jon Keast has invested in an electric bike which can carry about 60 bottles at a time, for deliveries in town, and an electric van for transporting wine further afield. As a result, Scarlet Wines is now thought to be the only wine merchant in the South West with a fully electric transport system. This comes at an important time for St Ives as the town has recently brought in new measures to ease congestion and enable social distancing in the narrow streets by banning cars and other vehicles from 11am – 4pm every day, but the e-cargo bike can still continue to operate. Like many other small businesses, Scarlet Wines has diversified rapidly over the last few months. From a wholesale merchant with a small retail shop, during lockdown Scarlet Wines became a wine delivery service supported 100% by private customers who received welcome packages delivered safely to their doors. Despite lockdown restrictions easing and hospitality busineeses reopening, Scarlet Wines will continue to operate customer home deliveries indefinitely. Jon, who is an active campaigner on climate change, saw the Covid-19 crisis as an opportunity to embrace electric transport in preparation for a greener post-lockdown world. Coupled with a portfolio increasingly dominated by organic and biodynamic wines – many of which are also vegan – Scarlet Wines has become one of the UK’s greenest wine merchants in recent months. “We need to think more carefully about all kinds of consumption,” says Jon, “and that includes wine. As a wine merchant it’s my job to create a portfolio with a green conscience, and to deliver that wine with as little environmental impact as possible.” Find out more and download the current wine list for delivery at www.scarlet-wines.co.uk

ETHERINGTON’S FARM SHOP
Set in a picturesque building just east of the North Cliffs and Porthtowan, Etherington’s boasts a gorgeous eco building farm shop housed with some of the best produce Cornwall has to offer. As well as offering meats, Etherington’s is also renowned as an accomplished butchery school, training everyone from apprentice chefs, young farmers, small holders and young butchers. Sourced directly from local producers and farmers, the Etherington’s team work hard to make sure their supply chains are short and totally traceable. There’s also the infamous Etherington Pasty from the site’s bakery, of which
they crimp and bake nearly 1,000 a day, it’s something of a hidden gem in Cornwall and a popular lunchtime choice for days spent roaming around Cornwall’s North Coast. During the Covid-19 lockdown, it was the locals who truly benefitted from the farm shop. Throughout the several months people stayed indoors and stayed as safe as possible, Etherington’s made sure they were on hand to provide to their community and beyond. Over 2,000 meat boxes flew out the door and the farm shop and bakery staff worked hard to provide other necessities to those who needed them. From Cornish Sea Salt to Kernow Chocolate, Rattler to Roddas and local vegetables and potatoes to meat from Tregullow of Scorrier Woods, it doesn’t get much more local than Etherington’s. A treasure trove blending contemporary and traditional Cornish produce together, this is the perfect place to stock up on local goodies this season.
