NEW FINDS ALEX o’conner Penwith based silversmith Alex O’Conner, who graduates this year from Truro College’s highly regarded BA Silversmithing and Jewellery degree course, has only recently emerged on the Cornish art scene, displaying a striking talent for creating elegant pieces which cleverly combine the smooth, solidity of silver with hints of metallic colour and more textural, process led details. Using the traditional metalworking techniques of hand raising and forming silver, copper and bronze sheet, she works from her own drawings, prints and experimental silver samples to develop and refine the uniquely beautiful shapes and surfaces of her single and grouped sculptural vessels. www.alexoconnorsilver.co.uk
trudy montgomery A recent arrival in Cornwall after fourteen years in California, rising talent Trudy Montgomery’s vibrant, expressionist paintings are striking in both their energised use of colour and their awe-inspiring size. Echoing the celebrated and highly influential abstraction of Cornish artists such as Peter Lanyon and Patrick Heron, hints of landscape in her work give way to an intuitive use of colour, mark and gesture and her free exploration of the expressive qualities of paint. Having exhibited already in London, Dubai, Los Angeles and Berlin, she is certainly one to watch and a welcome addition to the Cornish art scene. www.trudymontgomery.com By Mercedes Smith Fine Art Communications www.fineartcommunications.co.uk

What is this place? The paintings in this exhibition share a sense of improvisation. Like the act of drawing, the works are a way for the artist to work through ideas. Their marks have been made with a speed and spontaneity, executed quickly to capture changing thoughts and ideas. Some of the eight artists have been drawn to a particular location, repeatedly, to better understand it. For others, it’s the social and political landscape of the world today they are questioning. From the commonplace to the cosmic, the artists featured in this exhibition are questioning with paint, what is this place? Showing at Newlyn Art Gallery 22 April – 15 July. inspirational space THE LIMEKILN GALLERY
O
ur gallery, the Limekiln Gallery in Calstock, was started ten years ago as a location to present contemporary art within Southeast Cornwall, and to provide a white, clean exhibition space for local friends and talented people from around the area who had no platform for the great work everyone knew they were making. Sitting above the beautiful River Tamar with the train gliding by on the viaduct, the building has gradually become one of the fixtures and fittings of our community. As well as its main purpose it has been a place for teaching for all ages, a music venue, a meeting room for local organisations, the ticket seller for local venues, a parcel repository, and a great place for parties! Visitors often respond to
the idiosyncrasies of the gallery, whether it be the river reflected in sunlight on the ceilings, the view of the viaduct through the fish tank, or boats sailing past the windows. But it is the art which really inspires us. To have been a part of the burgeoning scene here, and seen artists develop in confidence and go out into the world to achieve success makes us constantly look forward to each future show with a tingle of anticipation. By Bernie Hawes, Owner.

aRTist’s FOCUS Ben Barker Ben Barker is driven by the magical alchemy of earth and fire, the raw chemistry that transforms simple clay into beautiful and dynamic ceramics. The self-taught Cornish potter has been working in three dimensional crafts for more than 40 years and continues to innovate and reinvent. In 2014 he returned to his Cornish roots and established Chy Gwynn Pottery in the rural village of Cusgarne near Truro. His landscape ceramics echo the earthy tones of the metal oxides left by mining and the strong architectural forms of the engine houses. “The influences on my ceramics are many but not specific” he says, “Often a polar response to my current practice and a compulsion to explore a new genre”. This contrast of style is evident in the contemporary monochrome aesthetic of his most current work in porcelain. Each piece is unique, hand thrown on the potters’ wheel and decorated in a minimalist black and white which creates endless visual variation and a feeling of understated grace. Ben undertakes commissions, works as Artist in residence for schools and colleges and offers tuition which include Studio days and Raku workshops. www.benbarker.co.uk www.cornwallcrafts.co.uk Words by Elizabeth Dale
