s I’m writing this, the sun is beaming through the office window and I’m hoping that this is the start of another glorious summer in Cornwall. Saying that, you can appreciate art, rain or shine, and there is something really wonderful about escaping a day of drab weather by venturing into a creative environment, whether it’s a gallery, an open studio, a workshop or even an interesting café - plenty of which you’ll find in this bursting summer issue of Art. The quality of work on display in Cornwall, by well-known and emerging artists, never ceases to amaze me and while we can only show a tiny taster of the art in these galleries, I always hope that you finish browsing desperate to see a lot more. Happy reading!

KESTLE BARTON Kestle Barton is an awardwinning conservation and conversion of an ancient Cornish farmstead. One barn is now a beautiful gallery opening onto a plantsman’s garden designed by James Alexander-Sinclair. Here there is a small tea hut serving light refreshments. The stylish holiday accommodation funds the arts project and is available through Forever Cornwall. Admission is free. Situated on the footpath between Helford Village and Frenchman’s Creek, arrive by car or on foot for a changing programme of exhibitions, events and workshops. This summer Paul Chaney’s Encampment Supreme is featured in the orchard, continuing his research into low impact grass roots architecture with the design and construction of this temporary pavilion. Made using only traditional vernacular building
techniques and post-consumer waste, and built during a series of public workshops, the pavilion will house some of Kestle Barton’s summer events. Moos/Moss (18th July – 6th September) is an exhibition by German artist Andrea Büttner, on show through the summer holidays to provide thoughtful commentary on the simple beauty of the ‘overlooked’ and the reverent power of woodcuts on paper made on a large scale. The final show of the season will be a wonderful collection of Bryan Ingham’s etchings of ‘Jollytown’. These depictions of his own home, just down the road from Kestle Barton near Lizard Point, were made over a ten-year span of time; Jollytown Etchings - Prints by Bryan Ingham 1968 – 1979, (12th September – 31st October). Late in the season Kestle Barton will also be featuring
Spontonality – a music improvisation sequence with Matthew Barley, Tim West and guests (10th – 15th October). See Kestle Barton for more details on the 2015 arts programme.

THE EXCHANGE The Exchange is a major contemporary art space in the centre of Penzance, showing national and international contemporary art, plus work by some of the best local artists. The 2015 summer show, a solo exhibition by American artist Robert Therrien, continues until 26th September. Therrien’s work examines the viewer’s relationship to scale. Often alluding to modest household items, such as a stack of oversized plates or a 2.5m high oil can, his works explore the space between reality and the world of dreams, drawing the viewer into the realm of fables
and fairytales, childhood games and unfinished narratives. The autumn show is a celebration of Terry Frost (1915–2003) on the event of his centenary. The exhibition brings together a selection of the artist’s most significant paintings, collages and sculptural forms from public and private collections across the UK. Looking at Frost’s work through ideas of performance, construction and colour, the exhibition takes a fresh perspective on his practice over six decades. It runs from 10th October 2015 to 9th January 2016.

pened by Chris Insoll in 1997, the studio above The New Gallery in Portscatho is home to an exciting group of artists, who make up the Portscatho Society of Artists. Some of the best contemporary art in Cornwall has been created within these four walls and while the studio itself feels like a piece of art history, the space is still very much alive and thriving with artists working there on a daily basis. “Many of our artist members use this studio because of the unique lighting created by the unusual advantage of having natural light from the north, east and south,” says Chris. “The studio sticks out into The Square at Portscatho and has a marvellous view over Gerrans Bay.” As well as its inspirational surroundings and plenty of painting equipment, the studio also offers a place of study and a relaxed environment and forum for artists to exchange ideas over a glass of wine and peruse the library of creative books. “We often eat together here and it’s a refuge for the landscape painters,” says Chris. And it’s not just for the artists, visitors to the gallery can experience the setting in which their paintings were imagined and created. “An increasing number of collectors have sat in the studio to be part of a picture by one of their favourite artists,” he says. “Everyone is welcome to visit.” See listing 24 for more information about The New Gallery, Portscatho.

NEW FINDS SHELLEY ANDERSON
www.shelleyandersonart.com
Born and bred in the industrial fishing port of Newlyn and raised amongst the rock pools of West Cornwall, you might expect Shelley Anderson to become a fine fisherman, but not necessarily a talented master craftsman and bronze sculptor as well. With a passion for diving and spearfishing and a degree in Silversmithing and Metal Fabrication from University College Falmouth, Anderson’s work is the embodiment of both Newlyn’s historic maritime culture and prestigious metalworking heritage. Trained under Michael Johnson of Newlyn Copper Works, Anderson combines traditional metalworking skills with innovative techniques to create the fluid, sometimes ferocious beauty of sea creatures in their natural habitat.
JACK STILING Every object, they say, tells a story, and never more so than in the work of rising Automata artist Jack Stiling. A recent graduate of University College Falmouth’s Contemporary Crafts degree, Stiling’s unique talent has earned him a first ever exhibition at one of the country’s most important contemporary craft galleries, the New Craftsman St Ives, this winter. Inspired by classic literature, hand-me-down stories and campfire fables, Stiling’s fantastical objects astonish and entertain, drawing the viewer into a world of marvellous mechanisms, magic and illusion, where curiosity is king and all things are possible. www.stilingsworkshop.com

23 GALLERY TRESCO Gallery Tresco is hosting three exhibitions during August. All of the work is inspired by the Isles of Scilly, featuring the landscape and aspects of island life. Neil Pinkett’s summer show of 2014 encapsulated the ferocious gales which had completely swamped the islands in February. These epic storms left swathes of coastal paths washed away and changed the contours of the beaches from gentle slopes to sheer sandy cliffs. Some of his oil paintings captured the boiling Atlantic Ocean with its vast rolling waves crashing onto the rocky headlands – these were a sell-out leaving his collectors hungry for more. It begs the question, what will he offer up this year? September will see Maggie O’Brien leading a teaching holiday on Tresco. Maggie and

AT A GLANCE Falmouth’s Art History
T
he Falmouth area boasts one of the most exciting, diverse, energetic and creative art scenes in Cornwall. There are no distinct colonies such as ‘Newlyn’ and ‘St Ives’, yet the area has attracted more than its fair share of important artists, craftspeople and performers. Amongst the earliest artists to visit were the topographical draughtsmen Samuel Buck (1696-1779) and his brother Nathaniel (fl.1711-1753), who produced oil paintings, and a particularly fine engraving of Pendennis Castle in 1734. Then, in 1811 J.M.W. Turner RA (1775–1851) visited both St Mawes and Falmouth capturing the Fal estuary’s distinct beauty for the print market. The formation of the Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society in 1833 provided Falmouth’s first public venue for exhibiting art. Henry Scott Tuke RA RWS (1858-1929) exhibited his first drawing there when he was nine years old. Tuke came to live in Falmouth with his family as a young child and after studying art in London and Paris, he returned to Cornwall in 1885 and
Ingram, Schooner on the High Seas
became a master at capturing the transient Cornish light outdoors. Older than Tuke, Hemy was already established as the country’s finest maritime artist with an international reputation. In 1883, he and his wife Amy Mary Freeman, built a grand house in Kimberley Place. Many great artists came to Falmouth to visit Hemy, such as Stanhope Forbes RA (1857-1947), Sir Frank Brangwyn RA (1867-1956), John Singer Sargent RA (18561925) and Montague Dawson RSMA (1895-1973). Both Hemy and Tuke are recorded as Newlyn school artists, but identified themselves very much as ‘Falmouth’ artists. The marine painter William Ayerst Ingram was the driving force behind the formation of the first Falmouth Art Gallery. It was opened in Grove Place in 1894 and featured his own work along with that of Tuke (a fellow Director), Hemy, Richard Harry Carter, Charles Davidson, Topham Davidson, Winifred Freeman and Sophie Anderson. John Singer Sargent and his fellow American James McNeill Whistler also exhibited. Today, Henry Tuke, The Message
Turner, Pendennis Castle
there is an exciting exhibition programme across the town at Falmouth Art Gallery, University College Falmouth, The Poly and the National Maritime Museum Cornwall. Falmouth was also important to the modernist movement in the 20th century. Ben Nicholson (18941982) and Christopher Wood (1901-1930) stayed with friends at Feock on the Fal estuary in 1928. From here they had a day visit to St Ives where they discovered the artist Alfred Wallis (1855-1942), a moment that changed the course of British art. During the summer of 1937 a group of extraordinary Surrealist artists came for a month’s holiday on the Fal at Lambe Creek. Among them were some of the most original painters, sculptors, writers and photographers of the 20th century, including Man Ray, Max Ernst, Lee Miller, Roland Penrose and Henry Moore. Many of the ‘holiday snaps’ taken by the great American photographer Lee Miller are kept in Falmouth Art Gallery. The golden age of Surrealism was clearly the 1930s, and it is hard to think of a place in England that was more intensively colonised by the top stars of the movement, albeit for a short period. Other important 20th century artists to visit Falmouth included Samuel John Lamorna Birch (1869-1955), Sir Muirhead Bone (1876-1953), Sir William Coldstream (1908-1987), Mary Fedden OBE (b.1915), Joan Gilchrist (1918-2008), Bryan Ingram (1936-1997), Henry Rushbury (1889-1968), Alfred Wallis (1855-1942) and Fred Yates (1922-2008) to name just a few. It is no coincidence that as the art education in the town grew in strength so did the gallery and cultural provision. In more recent times Principals of Falmouth University, and past and present lecturers, have ensured that staff and students contribute greatly to the cultural life of the town and county. 31 THE SEASCAPE GALLERY
Based in Rock, the Seascape Gallery hosts the beautiful photography of Nick Reader. Using a photography process dating back to 1850, Nick makes his own photographic film and creates glass plates with silver nitrate and collodion. The camera that he uses is over 100 years old. Describing his motivations behind this tricky and unpredictable way of working, he says: “I don’t want convenience to be the deciding factor in the decisions that I make. I try to appreciate simple beauty in a tangible way, and this old process creates objects with a jewel-like quality that are far removed from the modern photographic print.” Open Monday – Saturday 10am – 5pm
