PENLEE HOUSE GALLERY AND MUSEUM The award-winning Penlee House Gallery & Museum, Penzance, is the only Cornish public gallery specialising in the world famous Newlyn School artists (c.1880 - 1940) including Stanhope and Elizabeth Forbes, Walter Langley, Harold Harvey and Laura Knight. In recent years, the gallery has built an international reputation for its year round programme of temporary exhibitions, which offer the unique opportunity of viewing major Cornish works, borrowed from public and private collections across the UK, a stone’s throw from where they were created. Changing displays always include a selection from Penlee House’s permanent collection, ensuring that the Newlyn School are represented in at least one gallery. This summer, enjoy a new exhibition: ‘Model Citizens: Myths and Realities’ from 14th June – 6th September 2014, curated by Mary O’Neill. This exhibition focuses on the artists that colonised Newlyn from the 1880s onwards, such as Elizabeth Armstrong, Frank Bramley, William Breakspeare, Stanhope Forbes, Edwin Harris, Walter Langley and Leghe Suthers. They painted working people engaged in everyday tasks, alongside moments of high drama. You can admire over seventy works on display, many borrowed from private and public collections. Set in an elegant Victorian house and park, Penlee House also covers West Cornwall’s archaeology and social history, and offers an excellent café and shop, with full wheelchair access throughout.

NEW FINDS PIPPA YOUNG Since graduating from University College Falmouth only two years ago, West Cornwall based painter Pippa Young has caused quite a stir with her strikingly original work and has already exhibited at Medici Gallery London, Bucca in Newlyn and Cornwall Contemporary Penzance, to extraordinary critical acclaim. Her exquisitely rendered ‘non’ portraits of youthful, generic figures on blank and seemingly disconnected planes of colour and pattern are intended to reference the subjective, fragmented nature of contemporary reality. Oddly hypnotic and entirely open to interpretation, each of Young’s paintings is a delicious pleasure – a starting point for inspirational thoughts and fantastically interesting conversations. www.pippayoung.co.uk

ROB BRAYBROOKS Since his recent arrival on the West Cornwall arts scene, Rob Braybrooks has been turning heads not just for the beautifully composed, pared down nature of his imagery, but also for his unique approach to materials. Created from astonishingly detailed, hand-cut layers of birchwood set against richly coloured surfaces, these subtle relief works combine the visual hit of contemporary painting with the skill and beauty of contemporary craft. Inspired by coastal, rural and urban landscapes and intent on distilling the very essence of place and time down to its simplest terms, Braybrooks’ highly original works capture fleeting moments of the glorious everyday. www.robbraybrooks.co.uk By Mercedes Smith Fine Art Communications www.fineartcommunications.co.uk

The St Ives School of Painting (c.1880 – 2004)

Experience St Ives from the artist’s perspective, and uncover the town’s heritage as an artists’ colony by hiring an iPod Touch from the Tate Gallery and taking their Ben Nicholson multimedia walking tour. It takes you through St Ives, connecting places and spaces in and around the town to Nicholson, his work and his life. www.tate.org.uk

The St Ives School drew artists of all disciplines to the cobbled streets of St Ives in West Cornwall because of its fantastic light and the way of life the area offered. The arrival of these artists coincided with the decline of the fishing and mining industries and so their desire to rent accommodation and pay for models brought much needed income to St Ives. They worked from fish lofts, emptying them to create studio space to display their work, and began taking on art students. In 1920 Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada set up a pottery and later artists Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood helped develop the village as an artist’s colony. Ben Nicholson and his wife Barbara Hepworth settled in St Ives at the outbreak of the Second World War and in the 1950s more artists poured into the area, including Peter Lanyon, Roger Hilton and Terry Frost. The St Ives School was alive during the 1950s and 1960s and then in 1993 it had a new boost with the opening of the Tate St Ives, a new purpose built gallery, overlooking Porthmeor beach and exhibiting St Ives School art. A renovation project on Porthmeor Studios in 2010 started a new chapter for the school and St Ives remains a vibrant art colony, attracting artists and creative minds from all over the world.

P e te r Ce re dig - Evans

A rt i st ’s Ins pirational Place

P

eter Ceredig-Evans is a 24-year-old artist from Cornwall. Working in oils, he depicts subjects in rural landscapes, capturing moments of tranquility, as well as introducing haunting narratives that question the reality of the subject. His inspiration for these atmospheric, dreamlike paintings comes from growing up by the sea in Sennen, Cornwall.

“Growing up in Cornwall has played an instrumental role in the subject matter and narrative that concerns my paintings. The lifestyle which is on the doorstep for young people in Cornwall supports adventure and an active way of life,” says Peter. “I was primarily interested in creating visual suggestions of memory. By depicting dreamlike landscapes, I would seek to invite the viewer to question the reality of the subject. “These isolated places illustrate what surfing and growing up in West Penwith has meant to me,” he said. “By loosely depicting a scene or a group of figures, it allows for misinterpretation and the opportunity for the viewer to connect with the image and have a sense of familiarity.”

Painter Tom Henderson Smith re-located last year from the far west to the old market town of St Columb Major. His new home provides a wonderful place to have established The Lanherne Studio, named after The Vale of Lanherne that runs from there down to Mawgan Porth. Here it is the powerful presence of often ancient trees in the landscape, with the sea always beckoning to us beyond, that is providing fresh inspiration for him. The Lafrowda paintings, for which he became well known in St Just, have also led on to further painterly explorations of folk and festival traditions. All this and more can be seen at Tom’s website, where you can also find out about the planned Spring 2015 exhibition in Bodmin.
