GEMMA LESSINGER With the stunning Cornish coast on Gemma’s studio doorstep, she paints to try to convey the sheer beauty of the beaches of Cornwall. She is mesmerised by the immense power of the waves and the colours that appear in the deep waters, painting so that people can feel the sea spray on their skin and the sand between their toes. Her pieces are characterised by their myriad of colours and textured movements capturing aerial views of the Cornish shoreline. Texture is her signature, using sea salt and sand in acrylic paint to build depth and movement to

iconic wave breaks and beach locations. Gemma has collections available to view in St Mawes Gallery and various hotels across Cornwall. Gemma is also the founder of the Cornish female artist collective Hyli Creatives – a group of women with a shared love for the ocean and the county. MARTIN JOHN FOWLER ART An artist travelling and capturing Cornwall’s wild and bustling coastal areas, Martin John Fowler can typically be found immersing himself in the elements to capture his works. Born and brought up in the mining towns of South Yorkshire, Martin has spent much of his time in Cornwall whenever possible over the past twenty years and as a result, his rich and vivid pieces have seen him gain significant recognition amongst Cornwall’s artistic communities. Having studied Painting and Printmaking at Sheffield College as well as completing a BA(Hons) in Fine Art, Martin has exhibited works nationally and internationally in solo and mixed exhibitions. His bold colour palette and fluid style of painting depict a strong sense of movement and liveliness in his subjects, from windy rugged landscapes

to busy harbours docked with fishing vessels. His collection, The Prevailing Sense of Change, is an ongoing project to capture the change in working ports from personal childhood memories to present day scenes. You can find Martin John Fowler’s work in the following Cornish galleries: Artworld, Falmouth; Bluebramble Gallery St Ives; Tyler gallery Mousehole Discover more online at www.martinjohnfowler.com

NEW FINDS MARIA FLOYD Landscape artist Maria Floyd studied at both Goldsmiths College London and the Chelsea College of Art and Design. She lives and works in both Cornwall and Devon, using her extraordinary skill with mark, colour and composition to make ‘plein air’ paintings and drawings that capture the raw, high energy beauty of coast and moorland. Her work is for collectors who appreciate the spectacular beauty of Cornwall in all weathers, from the soft lull of springtime, to the violent sweep of winter skies, beating down upon a bleak and beautiful ocean. www.mariafloydart.com

STEVIE MCCRINDLE Newlyn born artist Stevie McCrindle is a proponent of the Japanese art of Gyotaku, or ‘fish printing’, which was a way for 19th-century fishermen to make impressions of their catch using rice paper and edible inks. Her contemporary twist on this ancient art involves painting directly onto her subject, taking a print from it, and then embellishing each beautiful image. Her work celebrates Newlyn’s fishing heritage, and the precious sea life around Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, and might be the only art form in which the subject of each portrait is promptly eaten. www.seamoorcornwall.co.uk By Mercedes Smith Fine Art Communications www.fineartcommunications.co.uk

HISTORY

10

PETER LANYON 8th February 1918 – 31 August 1964 Post-war Britain was a revolutionary period for art, emerging artists were interpreting their surrounding influences in a new, bold and experimental approach. One of the era’s most important figures is arguably George Peter Lanyon. A true original, Lanyon was born in S Ives and is today regarded as one of the leading figures in modernism of that time, as he sought to combine abstract values with his unique ideas on landscape and figurative work. During 1936-37, Lanyon attended Penzance School of Art and in 1939 he met established artists Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth and Nuam Gabo, where he received private art tuition from Nicholson. A member of the Newlyn Society of Artists, and a founding member of the Penwith Society of Arts (1949), Lanyon championed many starting artistic groups. In the late 1950s, keen to get a better understanding of landscape, Lanyon began to train as a glider pilot in order to get an aerial perspective of his subject matters. Sadly, in 1964, Lanyon was involved during a gliding accident and died as a result of his injuries, he was buried in St. Uny’s Church, Lelant. A selection of Lanyon’s works can be viewed at Tate St Ives.

TRUDIE MOORE Trudie Moore’s contemporary abstract paintings explore the tension created by control and restraint and contrast that with freedom in the painting process. Her current paintings have luminous fields of colour, transparencies and opacities that act as both a visual and an actual layer over one another, and which are layers upon the surface layer of the canvas. She works in clean, bright colours and fluorescents which allow her to achieve a fresh and pure lightness which lifts the viewer. She has fine art paintings and prints for sale, offers

commissions for your home or business and undertakes collaboration projects. Krowji, Redruth T: 07890 386554 E: trudie@trudiemoore.co.uk W: www.trudiemoore.co.uk TrudieMooreAbstractPaintings trudie_moore_artist Top image: Elliot White Photography

HISTORY ROSE HILTON 15th August 1931 – 20th March 2019 Renowned for her entrancing use of colour and light to move delicately between the boundaries of abstract and figure painting, Rose Hilton was a leading artist based in West Cornwall, whose career spanned over six decades. A figurehead in Cornwall’s pioneering contemporary scene, Hilton’s work was influenced by artists such as Matisse and Bonnard. Born in Kent, she attended the Royal College of Art in London, where she won awards for her life drawing as well as an Abbey Minor scholarship to Rome. When she married in the late 1950s, her husband at the time, abstract artist Roger Hilton, discouraged her from pursuing art for many years, however noticing her unyielding desire to paint and create, accepted that there were inevitably two artists in their small family. In 1975, Roger died, and Rose swiftly returned to pursuing her art full time. Her bold and beautifully feminine works saw her become one of Cornwall’s most beloved and respected woman artists. A forthcoming exhibition of Rose Hilton’s work is due to take place at Messum’s, London, a gallery she has exhibited at regularly since 1989, from 23rd June – 16th July 2021.

DISCOVER CHYSAUSTER ANCIENT VILLAGE The ruins of an Iron Age settlements believed to be originally occupied some 2,000 years ago, Chysauster Village is one of the finest examples of a settlement from this period in the country. Made up of stone-walled homesteads distinctively unique to the Land’s End peninsula and the Isles of Scilly, Chysauster has been a key figure in archaeological investigations for many years. Originally, the people of the village were farmers, and research into this has discovered evidence of livestock and crop keeping in the surrounding fields. Set on a hillside, the village offers stunning views across the wild reaches of West Penwith and visitors today can wander the village and see the remains. Dogs on leads are welcome. Chysauster hopes to open in Summer 2021.

EXPERIENCE PRUSSIA COVE Just near Perranuthnoe along the A394 towards Praa Sands lies one of Cornwall’s most notorious, but beautiful coves. Whilst picturesquely pretty, Prussia Cove is perhaps best known for its history as a smuggling hotspot. The collective name for four small coves, Piskies Cove, Bessy’s Cove, King’s Cove and Coules Cove, the Prussia name arose to fame during the 18th Century, when infamous Cornish smuggler John Carter, known to modern folklore as ‘The King of Prussia’, used the site to run his operations alongside his brothers, Harry and Charles. Regarded as the most successful smuggler of the Penzance region, Carter ran his prosperous dealings from 1777 until 1807, when he mysteriously disappeared. Today, the coves have retired from their roles as a smuggler’s sanctuary and instead offer glorious coastal views across Mounts Bay.

COWHOUSE GALLERY The Cowhouse Gallery is run by a group of local artists and craftspeople. This independence allows them to offer a wide range of original arts and crafts at very affordable prices. Painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, ceramics, glass, jewellery, textiles, woodturning and leatherwork are all beautifully displayed in this bright light art space. A stroll away is Perranuthnoe Cove and breath taking coastal walks looking towards St Michael’s Mount in one direction and to Prussia Cove the other.

LAMORRAN GARDENS Small, but perfectly formed, Lamorran Gardens is tucked away in one of South Cornwall’s most idyllic spots, overlooking St Mawes to St Anthony’s Headland. Protected from the worst of Cornwall’s frostier months and tempestuous seasons, Lamorran is a haven for plants and flowers of subtropical species to flourish. 90 percent of the garden’s four acres are covered with evergreens, including over 200 palm trees originating from 40 different species. Of course, one of Lamorran’s most recognisable features is its picturesque Temple, a pavilion type structure overlooking the ocean, covered by a canopy of trees and plants. Due to the location of the gardens, access can only be reached through a series of small and variously located steps, making it unsuitable for those in wheelchairs or those with limited mobility. However, the top of the gardens offers a beautiful terrace where visitors can enjoy the views with a tea or coffee. The gardens are open Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, from 10am to 4pm until the 30th September. A true utopia that allows visitors a real sense of escapism, Lamorran is certainly a South Cornish gwarden gem worth visiting. www.lamorrangardens.co.uk

THE SQUARE GALLERY The Square Gallery has a reputation for showing original art, lovingly collected and assembled at their home in picturesque St Mawes. STEP INSIDE: THE NEW GALLERY ANDREA INSOLL 3D SUDIO, PORTSCATHO TRASH OR TREASURE Around 10 years ago I began making collages and sculptures from my accumulated ‘treasures’ collected over the last couple of decades from my local beaches in Cornwall. Having brought my flotsam and jetsam home I dry, clean and sort them I really enjoy this part of the process and the excitement of beach combing has never diminished although it is now tempered by horror at the huge volume now arriving on our shores. I then start to assemble my 3D pictures and sculptures. I like to frame my pictures in deep box frames so that they can either be hung on the wall or free standing. In 2019 I collaborated with the Hidden Hut and installed three frame grids, one already filled with my treasure and two empty ready to receive treasure found by visitors to Porthcurnick Beach. This year I am collaborating with Treloan campsite to install a frame grid there. Hopefully not only being able to look at the installations but to also take part, focuses the beachgoers’ minds on the damage being done by plastic waste to our precious marine environment.

CORNWALL CRAFT ASSOCIATION The Celebration Goes On: Cornwall Crafts Association Commemorates 125 of The National Trust Last year, the Cornwall Crafts Association was invited by The National Trust at Trelissick to take part in their celebrations to honour 125 years of The National Trust. This major exhibition, featuring 40 pieces of spectacular work from the CCA’s members, took place in Trelissick House. The exhibition launched in March 2020, but soon after lockdown and national restrictions, the show has since only been seen by a small number of people as Trelissick House remained closed for the season. Now, it has been announced that once restrictions are eased on this latest lockdown, the CCA’s ‘Celebrating 125 Years of The National Trust’ will be relocated into the upstairs gallery of Trelissick, offering a fantastic opportunity for future visitors and members alike, as the exquisite works created finally get to be appreciated in full. The exhibition features uniquely personal art from the members of the association as they explore the significance of the special and historic places the National Trust cares for. The resulting exhibition is a broad, beautiful array of various mediums, from jewellery, prints and sculptural pieces to textiles, ceramics and metalwork. In the meantime, the talented members of the Cornwall Crafts Association are available on the CCA website, where visitors can browse works and discover more about each member on their own page. www.cornwallcrafts.co.uk Trlissick Gallery Trelissick Feock Cornwall TR3 6QL 01872 864514

EXPERIENCE THE LOST GARDENS OF HELIGAN

painting or photographic print. ‘Sail Loft Emporium’ houses a fine array of antiques, collectables, vintage and retro items. Around 50 cabinets and stalls all under one roof.

200 acres of history, romance and pioneering horticulture had cemented Heligan as one of the county’s leading gardens since its discovery thirty years ago. For decades, Heligan lay overgrown and forgotten, lost to time shortly after the start of World War One. It was only a chance discover of a door in the ruins that revealed the magnitude of what lay beneath the bramble. Since then, the gardens have not only been restored but transformed into an estate brimming with historic and sustainable techniques. Traditional breeds of animal and age-old rural crafts are part of this working estate’s everyday life and ancient pastures sit beside subtropical jungles, productive gardens where seasonal fruit and vegetables grow and pleasure grounds where a floral feast awaits. Open daily, pre-booking is essential for all visitors, including Members and Local Pass Holders.
